Thread: PlayStation 5 Pro Review Thread
Not my first PS5. In Australia, the prices are ridiculous.

PS5 Slim Digital Normal Price $679
PS5 Slim Digital Current Discount Price $549

PS5 Slim Disc Normal Price $799
PS5 Slim Disc Current Discount Price $629

PS5 Pro $1199

So PS5 Pro is almost double the digital at standard prices. Its a big ask.

Wow that is expensive. Yeah, probably not worth it in it's current state. As I said in my last post, if you buy now you are mostly buying based on future potential as not too many games have decent patches for it yet.

Trading in my XB and some games got mine to under $300 so that seemed fair to me. My XB stuff had been collecting dust for years. No way I would have paid full price out of pocket.

So i put my base PS5 from my living room to bedroom after getting the pro.....

And now i just lay in bed playing games lol.

Welcome to the club, I have a 65 inch tv with a pc and ps5 hooked up to it in my bedroom. I never play in the living room anymore

Never had much interest in a PS4 Pro or PS5 Pro, but I'm glad they exist since having a Pro mode usually makes backwards compatibility on the next generation even better. Hopefully they can iron out the issues with PSSR and mature the tech so PS6 games run more reliably in performance mode. Ideally with more exclusives and less cross-gen releases that feel like they can limit game design.

Ok folx, I'm planning on trading in my ps5 towards a ps5 pro. I can watch YouTube videos about it, and I have, but it's hard to trust what these skills are saying so I'm asking my brethren. My trusted community.

Is the ps5 pro worth it? Or maybe my question should be, dos the ps5 pro add a noticeable difference to the games? Will I fire it up and go...eh..ok? Or will I be like "I appreciate the technological differences afforded to me by this mid gen refresh".

I won't ever go pc, and I suspect there are many years left with this generation, so my thought is might as well have thr biggest and baddest until whatever comes next. Especially for gtavi. I don't want to be stuck in a gtav for the Xbox360 situation know what I mean.

If the few hundred bucks is something that is a big decision, then maybe don't do it. It's a great machine and it's offering some really nice upgrades already, with most likely nicer upgrades as time goes on.

But the extra polish on screen is not going to be appreciated if the money shouldn't have been spent on something trivial.

Nah, the money tbh isn't a big deal. I'll get $345 trade in for my launch ps5. I don't have that added expectation and anticipation cause I saved for 9 months and took on a side job to get this bad boy omggg.

It's a whatever purchase financially, I'm just curious if you fired the thing up and were instantly like "ok, ok, these are some nice improvements".

Launch a third party game, compare fidelity mode to performance mode. If you see a significant difference in visuals and image quality, buy a Pro. Because you'll get the 30fps fidelity mode visuals from the Amateur PS5 at 60 fps with the Pro.

If you don't see a difference, won't be worth it.

I always notice a difference, and prefer playing in fidelity mode basicslly every single time cause I want all the grafix baby. All of them. I much prefer 30fps and better image quality over 60fps, but if I can have the best of both worlds hell yeah brother.

Yeah then you'll be very happy with the Pro, such a neat machine.

It'll take some more time for devs to get a hang of it and use its potential, but the next four years will be good for Pro owners.

Sony says the PS5 is in it's final years. Fuck that, wait for the PS6, if that's the case.

They said it's in its second half. Meaning four more years. Gonna be painful for PS5 Amateur users in some cases. We know how bad many devs are at their jobs. Won't get better.

The PS5 was released in November 2020, seven years after its predecessor, the PS4.

In its first year, the PS5 sold around 15 million units, beating the PS4's first year success.

However, the PS4 lasted seven years before its life cycle came to an end, while Sony have recently shared that the PS5 sales are winding down after just four - making it the shortest lifespan of any PlayStation console.

Confirming the news, Sony senior vice president Naomi Matsuoka said: "Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle.

"As such, we will put more emphasis on the balance between profitability and sales. For this reason, we expect the annual sales pace of PS5 hardware will start falling from the next fiscal year."

Natsuoka's comments come after Sony had initially hoped to sell 25 million units of the PS5 during the current financial year ending March 31, 2025, but the tech firm has since changed its ambitions to 21 million units instead.

Since it's release, the PS5 has sold just short of 55 million units.

I think you're being very optimistic with 4 more years.

Sony isn't going to piss off its base by making its system with the actual install base look bad in favor of a system that costs over $900 once you add in a drive, a stand and tax. Especially when it's only delivering the things the original PS5 promised to deliver and even then only sometimes. "That Fidelity Mode that we promised? Now you can actually run it!" is shit marketing all things considered.

It's a shit show.

Why anyone would take them at their word when they're now trying to sell an even more expensive system to do the same shit they promised the launch PS5 would do and this time they're charging you for a disc drive and a stand is beyond me. They got my money once, they lied about what it could do. That's it for them.

Really want that game on PC. Pro Version looks fire

GT has always looked good, it's just a snooze fest to play. When the series first came out there was the initial rush of learning how FWD, RWD, AWD behave in a game with physics to back it up, and the additional thrill of racing a car you actually owned, but "I'm driving the same Nissan Sentra in my garage!" quickly became "I'm driving the same Nissan Sentra in my garage." And then the realization hit that GT was basically bumper cars with no damage for driving badly.

I gave up on the series after GT4 and went to Forza and never looked back honestly, even though GT is and will probably be always the better looking game.

Ok Phil.

Why do this now? Are they trying to sell more? Was it in response to feedback of the original video Cerny put out prior to launch?

19% of PlayStation console sales were Pro consoles, making up 24% of the revenue. Significant impact and obviously sold more than the Xbox consoles. Question is, if it'll remain that strong or if the enthusiasts bought it and now it'll have weak sales going forward.

Do you think this checks out, PS6 in 2028?

What does Sony gain from this? Nothing. To have a chance at recouping software costs, there has to be a large enough base to sell games to. The PS5 base isn't even large enough to do that consistently — we still hear companies missing sales forecasts every month. Assuming there isn't a crash and Sony somehow manages to put another 50 million PS5s in homes by 2028, why would they turn right around and say "Ok, generation's over! Let's go back to eating ramen!"

There is zero chance PS6 comes in 2028.

It's an enthusiast machine. Early adopters are its bread and butter. It will never sustain those kinds of numbers given the price and other factors. PS4 Pro doubled PS4 vanilla sales in Japan on launch week too, and that machine cost roughly the same as a standard launch PS4.

My take is that Sony sees massive problems on the horizon with this machine, that's why they've sent Cerny out to damage control it. Think about it: have we ever seen a system launch and then the company have to send its engineers out to do a PR tour a month later? During the holidays, a WEEK from Christmas, no less? My take is that if everything was going according to plan with the Pro, they wouldn't have executives going out there to "explain" it. Why no one has picked up on what is obviously a sign of panic I have no idea, but that's my read on the situation.

Times are wild. A new console generation needs to provide a very significant performance boost for around the same price or slightly higher. What we've been seeing in the last few years, performance per price improvements were very weak. It was basically "more performance for more money" in a nearly linear fashion.

The more time passes, the larger the advancements will be, the more reasonable a PS6 will be from a performance to price ratio. Also, dev circles are very long, it costs a lot to support many platforms, I believe devs are happy to work with the current hardware for 3-4 years before being hit with another new SKU. That would be a good case for 2028.

At the same time, Xbox is fucked this gen and are trying to turn the page asap. And the AI advancements make classical raster performance improvements less important.

I don't think Microsoft is in the console business any longer. I think they're pivoting to software publishing. Unless maybe they take a stab at co-op'ing a console with Valve, but given the Windows/Linux thing, I don't see that ever happening. Microsoft destroyed their name and reputation on hardware — no one wants to buy an Xbox anymore. They're cooked, unless they can bring out something revolutionary that brings huge buzz and reinvigorates them in the hardware space, but why would they do that — they've clearly shown that they have no idea how to lead in the console space, and in fact, we're pretty destructive to it. Why force their way into a market that clearly doesn't respond to the company's goals? Just make a bunch of software and wipe your hands of the hardware problems.

For Sony, I don't think the hardware costs will be as critical them delaying the machine as will not having the huge install base to draw from.
