Thread: PlayStation 5 Pro Review Thread

Seriously, why are developers so incompetent?

You instantly SEE that there are issues, with the water reflections, the soft image quality with PSSR, shadow issues.

Imagine implementing new stuff that looks worse and going along with it. No, just use the same TSAA from UE5 with a higher internal resolution, it'll produce a much better result. Don't use PSSR when you have a very good solution already.

Don't use RT reflections on water if you have crazy obvious issues. Use higher res SSR.

It's not hard at all. I'm baffled, they did a bad job.

Serious question: why would they devote a bunch of resources to a system that is going to be a tiny fraction of the base? They're rubber stamping it because the Pro Base doesn't warrant it. That's my take anyway. And really -- it's a sound business decision to not take money from resources that will make you money by having them gussy up an old game for a tiny audience.

And that's exactly why it's so extremely dumb what they did here. They went with a totally new tech in PSSR, did some shitty fancy shadow stuff that was half baked, integrated a new system for water reflections.

Instead, they should've saved resources, using the same AA solution from base PS5, just increase the resolution. Boom, you have great image quality. Don't touch the shadows, not worth it. Increase the RT reflection resolution (like they did with great results), don't touch the water. If you have some compute budget left, increase the LoD or texture quality.

Very easy, can be done in a couple of days, great results. But them being incompetent lead to more work and the bad result we have now.

It seems PSSR kinda sucks, at least that seems to be a common sentiment, so maybe the devs are pissed off at that too. I dunno, it seems to me that the Pro is kinda shitty all around.

PSSR has issues and isn't delivering in many cases. Devs had the belief that, it's like DLSS. You slap it in there, it works and looks great. Unfortunately, isn't the case with PSSR.

The Pro is a good device that can be easily leveraged if you have a minimum level of competence and don't want to invest resources. Simply adjust a few parameters like resolution, draw distance for shadows and vegetation, RT quality. Test a bit to make sure you hit the target frame rate. Done, good job, noticably better visuals. The average PC modder can do that all in a week.

At least the Sony exclusives have all really good Pro modes. Even non first party titles like Stellar Blade, excellent and a big improvement. It's only third party devs that are struggling.
