Thread: Amazon's LOTR Series Name - "Rings of Power"
I wonder if watching the first episode and then not watching any more would be more effective? The dropoff from episode 1 to episode 2 of the netflix Cowboy Bebop was pretty impressive and then they announced it was cancelled pretty quickly.

You might be right. I don't know the secret code to decipher the inner-workings of modern corporate wokeism.

Come up with a single reason cultural diversity is good.
Because sometimes new ideas and a fresh set of eyes on a situation brings improvements.

Britain was stronger than England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales individually, and the combination of those cultural influences were the foundation of the most prosperous, wealrhy and free era humanity has ever seen, all without those individual cultures giving up their own unique characteristics.

Multiculturalism alone, where there is no unity or shared identity to create social bonds is a disaster, but a shared umbrella culture, be that Britishness or the American Dream, can create something far stronger than any single group can alone.

Why multiculturalism at all, nevermind alone? Why? You're all working backwards from the assumption multiculturalism is needed and trying to make it work, but it's backwards.

Remember, watching their show is how they determine if people like this kind of content. The fewer people watch, the less data they have showing that people approve of the content. I will definitely not be watching, as even from what little has been shown, it is obvious that the creators have no respect for the works of Tolkien.

I think it would send a much bigger message if tons of people check out the first episode or two, but drop it (assuming it's not good, of course!). It would show that there was tremendous potential in more Lord of the Rings, but they just handled it poorly.

I still hope it ends up being good somehow.

Actually not a bad idea. That way they can gauge a drop off in viewership.

Yeah, Tolkien wrote other books besides The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings describing the earlier history of his world, probably the best known being The Silmarillion. Apparently Amazon didn't get the rights to any of that stuff though, so they're actually trying to launch a prequel series based entirely on like 6 offhand sentences and a couple of poems from LotR. In any case if it wasn't already clear Amazon's story and characters are 99.9% created from whole cloth, it's fanfiction rather than adaptation.

Couldn't find that original Tweet...

Either way, they also acquired the rights to the "appendices," which is around 150 pages of additional lore. I've never read it, but apparently they are basing this show on that. Not saying it won't be basically fan fiction in the end, but this doesn't seem all that accurate.

Oy vey. As if you needed more reasons to think this series will suck balls:

All you have to know about New LOTR TV series producer:

As it turned out, Amazon fired Thomas Alan Shippey. English professor of literature, philology and writer. He worked and taught at Oxford, Leeds and St. Louis Universities, where he studied medieval literature, science fiction and fantasy. He is one of the most authoritative researchers of Tolkien's work on the planet. Mariana Rios Maldonado was chosen to take his place as Tolkien's "chief consultant". Not at all a specialist in Tolkien's work, but a student at the University of Glasgow where she writes a doctoral thesis on "Ethics, Femininity and other issues in the stories of J.R.R. Middle-earth". Tolkien". She also serves as overseer of the Diversity and Equality student committee. She publicly states that she considers Tolkien's works "problematic", that they glorify racial inequality, sexism and chauvinism. And his works are loved by people adhering to neo-fascist views. She considers herself morally and intellectually superior to Tolkien, and therefore works tirelessly to turn the Myths of Arda into a modern, adapted and corrected version that will appeal to everyone.

Holy shit, is that true? What's your source on this? Firing a legitimate Tolkien scholar for a woke diversity consultant is fucking brilliant.
Was posted on /tv/ so yes you should take some salt with it.

I 've no reason to doubt it though, since she was quoted in a recent article by the Hollywood Reporter regarding the backlash.

Added Tolkien scholar Mariana Rios Maldonado, "Who are these people that feel so threatened or disgusted by the idea that an elf is Black or Latino or Asian?"

I don't understand. Is this one of those Hollywood tax scam things where they make more money if something bombs?

I am now imagining a new remake of The Producers with an entirely black cast, but they can't have the producers fail since you're only allowed to depict black people as being perfect, so the two black female leads with afros throw the best play that ever existed instead. The play would be about the tough life black people face in America.

This mindset is so fucking disingenuous. I don't think most people feel threatened or even disgusted (well maybe a little disgusted depending on the person) about "diverse Elves." It's just that people have certain expectations when you use an existing property with such a long and storied history. It's disappointing and kills interest when the setting isn't respected and is instead changed on a whim to meet some ridiculous modern diversity quota.

Why can't they just create something original that is diverse from the get-go? Oh wait, maybe the comment spammers on the YouTube video can answer that...

Dead on arrival.

Her picture in her twitter doesn't surprise me either.

Can't wait another 50 years after JK is dead, people will be able to finally edit Harry Potter to be less problematic

Not unless she makes some legal moves today to ensure her works don't get bastardized once she passes.

I am really proud of everyone with a positive attitude regarding giving this a chance.

The ride never ends.
Difference is that Tolkien fans know this series looks shit and are already savaging it. Star Wars fans were hoodwinked by Disney into watching The Last Jedi and realized the Mouse was ruining the franchise.

Personally, I really don't give a toss about the Amazon show. The LOTR film trilogy was enough for me and even though The Hobbit trilogy was a misfire it did have it's moments.
