Thread: Silent Hill 2 |OT| There was a subtitle here, it's gone now
Official Thread
Seems decent so far.

My only gripe is the fog. It's everywhere and yet never where James is. You never run through it, it's like you have a protective dome around you and the fog moves alongside that in perfect harmony, never disturbed.

Is it the same on PC? I'm playing on ps5.

This Nigel claims to see differences between native and DLSS that aren't there but doesn't notice traversal stutter that happens on every hardware because it's an engine issue. SURE BUD

Whether it's gsync, my oled response time, my over powered hardware combination or me simply playing on controller where the camera pans slower, who knows.

I do know what it is though and will point it out if I see/feel it.

Holy shit alot of settings and accessibility options akin to a PlayStation release... which feels so weird to say with a Konami boot up screen logo of all things.

Max settings with RT I'm getting 30-45 fps... but primarily in the 30s 😱. The game says it supports DLSS and frame gen but I can't see any clear options for there yet .

@regawdless this might be a good game to play on your 5090 tbh. Even m system is on its knees until I find the dlss options.

Found it. Everything at max settings

Native; 30-45 fps.
Quality; 60fps
Balanced; 67fps
Performance; 72fps
Ultra Performance; 100fps

So strange jumps from significant to inconsequential IMO between settings. Obviously lowering settings on any of those render targets will increase the FPS.

Setting high preset to custom only changes shaders from medium to high. Leaving it at high nets you an extra 10fps on my quoted numbers.

Ray Tracing is really good actually. As in I noticed and appreciated it 😅.

lol this guy. I ask him about the traversal stutters, specifically. He plays the game, tags me, gives me all kinds of cool info and NO word on the stutters like the hostile dude he is.

Download size on PC?

33gb on PC. TINY compared to God of War and Horizon 2 both clocking in well over 100gb!

@regawdless nothing in the way of stutter yet, but it only 20 minutes in.

Character models of the two I met look great, despite my earlier cynicism. Whether they were tweaked or are just better in motion I couldn't say.

Someone asked about the fog earlier on PC. It's pretty good, certainly better than other games I've played where you have like a line always 3 meters in front of you that moves forward when you do. I wouldn't say you go through the fog, more it dissipates as you get near, but to my eyes/experience its in a natural way.

So far it's the original game only better graphically. It still has the same flaws I.e the first 10 minutes just holding the run button along a linear path etc. I think I'll be liking this a touch more than the original, but probably be no Resident Evil 6.

Resident Evil 6? You're comparing Silent Hill 2 to Resident Evil 6?? Dude you're really on fire with your trolling lately.

You mother fuckers! As big fun of the classic games I was so happy to save 60 bucks since I was sure they would muck it up, but you guys are giving this a bit too much praise for me.

I must resist. I HAVE to!

..shit.

btw the amazing thing with the new GPU will be that I don't even play at 4k. It'll mostly be 3440x1440 DLSS Quality. Going for high fps, can't wait.

I'm am playing this as I did Alan Wake 2 with RT on quality preset. That said I am missing frame gen. 86 base to a locked 120fps even if the benefit of that is just visual rather than latency would be great. Hope they add it in.

..shit.

Let me be a voice of reason.

So far it is faithful to the point of having the same general design as the original. The movement and combat is redesigned, but it is average. It is an old game with a new presentation.

Therefore, it is nothing special to play. Slow paced with average combat.

On the plus side the story feels slightly more fleshed out than in the original. That has been nice.

There has been a few extra moments added to a cutscene I don't remember from the original which was just... Absolutely stupid.

So for me after 6 hours or so. It is a bit of a mixed bag so far. It's not bad. And for a fan of the originals it has not won me over yet.

So I've played 3 hours now. Id say for better or worse it is the Silent Hill 2 you remember. How much you like the game will depend exactly on how much you like the original. It is however improved in every area, to make this the definite version of that game.

+ Graphics are really well done.
+ Interiors are MUCH better and far less generic.
+ Really nice detail touch's, such as enemies leaving a blood trail behind them when they slither across the floor.
+ Excellent sound effects.
+ Combat 100 times better.
+ Well balanced standard difficulty.
+ Classic available on modern system/hardware (the most important point IMO)
+ No Comic Sans font (though they should of done that as an Easter Egg lol)
+ Intriguing story, excited for new bits.

- Demanding hardware wise.
- Moment to moment gameplay isn't that great. Lots of just holding down the run button.
- Save points can be few and far between, will it start me 20/30 minutes back? Not sure on that one.
- James takes seeing the town/monsters as if its just another day at the office.

Original Silent Hill Two I'd give a 3/5, this one so far id say the same, possibly a really low 4/5 depending on how the rest of the game goes. Glad I made the purchase, 3 is a "good" game on my rating scale.

Glad to see the positive impressions. I never played the original and don't have any nostalgia for it, so I'll probably wait for a sale. $69.99 is a steep price, even with the discounts you can find at various key resellers.

Hmm. 38 quid on CD Keys. Worth it for that price? Think I might just wait until it's 25 or less, only a matter of time.

Will maybe get it cheap on a key selling site. Don't want to give them my money because they went with a stupid fucking DEI consultancy company like SBI for this game.

So sad.

And for a fan of the originals it has not won me over yet.

It has now.

I've been critiquing this game hard. Too harshly. Despite that, I'm enjoying the game a lot. It has now won me over.

There is so much that has gone into the presentation in this game. From dust floating through the hallways, stormy weather, leaves blowing in wind. The atmosphere on show is great. Cracks in the paint, flaking rust, stains, hanging lights.

Silent Hill I think can lose some 'grit' visually in the move to HD and a 4k screen. But the effort put into making each space haunting or wasted really helps with that change.

I think there are talks to be had whether more should have been done to modernize aspects of the presentation, in terms of pacing and story, but they have opted for more of a faithful retelling. And I can't hate on that.

Current only gripe is whether or not I am sold on the dodge mechanic. It may be a bit overpowered, too forgiving. You can definitely, quickly cancel from the start of an attack into a dodge. That makes close combat a little lenient where I am in the game at this moment. I'm playing on default difficulty. Maybe hard was the way to go.

That's not a major thing tho. It's pretty much all positive now that I have gotten over myself.

Man this game is creepy. Walking through the cemetery with the fog and the presentation is just great. I'm on a 4090 and enabled frame gen and I'm getting about 110FPS on 4K. Using ultra performance mode. Pretty stable.

WTF Where is frame gen!? Honestly it was hard for me to find DLSS options lol. Don't normally have a problem finding such things!
