Which is why Sony are fucking stupid for diluting their brand on platforms their games are not fully appreciated on. Just another reason Jim Ryan is failure.
Aye, Returnal is one of those classic B tier exclusives that would tip the balance for a gamer in Playstation's favour over PC, Nintendo and Xbox (well, in a world where Xbox still had the 360's steady stream of AAA exclusive bangers, anyway).
The multiplatform games are a wash that favours PC, or at least that's the perception, due to comparison reviews like Digital Foundry using top end rigs, which in reality only about 1% of players would actually own.
AAA exclusives are always going to be big crowd pleasers, that have massive appeal and likely to be worth buying to just about everyone.
Be it Uncharted, Halo or Zelda, there's few people that won't be happy with a purchase, so on that front, all 3 consoles are pretty much on an equal footing, although obviously Nintendo has the advantage of being a 'family friendly' brand. However, we have seen from systems like the WiiU and Gamecube that that alone is not enough to guarantee Nintendo success.
Which, therefore, just leaves the B tier games to swing it in someones favour, the games that, once you listed all the multiplatform and big name exclusives, are then added on top as games you might not buy the system for, but you'd
probably want, if you're already invested in the ecosystem. Games like Journey, Blue Dragon, Astral Chain or, in this case, Returnal, which aren't system sellers, but are made to hopefully cater to a niche taste that isn't being catered to elsewhere.
Those advert games, library fillers that cast a wide net of interest, were what Playstation used to excel in, and has since both abandoned regular development of and tossed away the reason they existed in the first place, by giving up exclusivity.
And I'm not surprised no one gives a shit now they're regularly on PC. Infact I expect sales of every port to be lacklustre going forward quite frankly, with the possible exception of Demon's Souls, or a hypothetical Bloodborne Remake, because Souls games will always have an audience.
The initial excitement over Playstation games coming to PC was always going to be big, just due to novelty, but now that novelty has gone, all we're left with is another late port of a game that had it's excitement and main sales window months, if not
years ago.
They're old news that just won't drive ad traffic or word of mouth, and will have already been waited for so long by it's potential customers, that waiting a few months longer for a sale is extremely easy to do.
I mean just look at the anemic sales of the Tomb Raider reboot sequels, after their timed exclusivity to Xbox.
Despite no greater sales on xbox than the first game managed, that delay massively curtailed sales on Playstation 4 and PC, despite those 2 platforms accounting for over 80% of the series sales previously. Delaying a release on another platform does nothing to increase overall sales, because people will not change platform for a game that they will be able to get eventually, but they will have lost interest by the time it is available.
Not that simultaneous releases do any better. Xbox has been doing that since last gen on PC, and it sure as hell hasn't been benefitting their hardware sales or series success.
Admittedly, it's hard to tell how much this strategy is hurting them in comparison to the half dozen other ways they're fucking up, but it sure as hell isn't creating enough PC sales to offset the potential long term revenue they'd normally get by locking customers into their platform with traditional exclusives.
As I've said before, I don't think Sony will be harmed by PC releases any time soon, but I think they'll have already started to question exactly how cost effective the extra development costs are for these ports, even without hardware sales being taken into account, given how poorly this and the last Uncharted collection have sold.
I do however expect the PS5 to sell less than the PS4 by generations end, and the PS6 to sell less again should they maintain this approach of both not giving enough reasons to invest in their platform, with fewer niche B tier games gettung made, and creating ports that give potential customers a reason to invest in a PC instead of a Playstation.
