So, I had a decent co-op run (I hosted it). Killed the first boss and reached the boss in the second area. That is one tough motherfucker! No cigar on the first try.

I hope now that I got the crimson key, I don't have to do the first boss again.

I wonder how you can unlock the hookshot.

I got very sick on Thursday, basically slept until now. Therefore couldn't play much of it yet.

My initial hour with the game, I'll only address performance for now:
4k maxed with RT and DLSS did stutter like in the DF video and wasn't that fluid. Going for native 1440p with everything maxed and RT (audio as well), Vsync on which caps it at 60fps, it's completely smooth. No stutters or hitches at all, not even when going though doors or entering new areas. Will test some more, don't know yet how 1440p unlocked fps feel.

I am stuck to the second boss. I must have tried him at least two dozen times, but his third phase is bullshit. He has a couple of attacks that are near instant and take away half your health.

Since I am not made of time, I have save scummed with a good weapon and stats just before the boss. Still a fucking pain in the ass. I am getting Ornstein flashbacks o_O

How did you even save scum in this game?

From my short time with the game, I really don't understand anything so far lol. Items, progression, unlocks, collectibles.... Have to read a bit to get it. Will hopefully be able to play more of it tonight when I'm not too tired.

Yeah, it's a bit confusing.

I save scum the same way I did it when I had to on DS games. Go to the

C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Returnal\Steam\Saved\SaveGames

folder, make a copy when you are in a good spot, and then if you die, exit the game, paste the saved files in that folder again (replacing the existing ones), and make sure during Steam sync that you keep the local files when you start the game.

Even with this, I am getting obliterated half way in the third phase. It's insane. I tried a bunch of times by myself and many times in co-op. I noticed I've become very good at the first two phases (I rarely get hit at all), but the third phase is just bullshit. I also noticed that with the exception of 2-3 co-ops, most others that joined my game sucked big time and I had to constantly revive them, so I am not sure it is worth co-oping, unless you are lucky enough to get a good player.

Also, I think the damage/health of the boss with co-op is way more than double the single player game. Some of his hits empty half my health. I think I'll concentrate on trying him alone for a while.

It's also harder to skip the first level IMO. If you just go right to level 2, you're at all level 1 shit, small health bar, etc. You can get really efficient at the game to the point that the first level takes you less than 10 minutes and you can mine the hell out of it for upgrades to set you up for a real run (in a way that just starting right at a later level can't).

I killed the motherfucker (solo)!

Some notes:
  • Play solo. Co-Op massively increases the boss's damage output and health.
  • Use your alt-fire. It makes a huge difference, because it will take down a chunk of his health fast.
  • Play defensively, meaning, prioritise not getting hit and running in circles to shotting.
  • When the boss flies up and far away and does his screaching explosive pass, look up to notice where he is coming from and time the dash.
  • At the beginning of the second phase, avoid the blue waves by jumping over them (and stay close to the arena wall).
  • At the beginning of the third phase, avoid trhe blue waves by dashing through them (and stay close to the arena wall).
  • Third phase is a motherfucker. Make sure you don't get hit by his dash attack. Stay as far away from him as possible.
  • His three red wave stomp can be avoiding by first jumping, then dashing and then jumping.

Good luck!

Damn. I thought that the grapple-required door in the opening area would allow you to bypass the first two biomes/levels.

Alas, not the case!

Returnal appears to be one of Sony's weakest PC launches so far.

The roguelike shooter has so far achieved under 7,000 concurrent players on Steam during its first weekend, according to SteamDB.

For comparison, the only game in Sony's recent PC catalog to have performed worse is Sackboy: A Big Adventure which managed just 610 peak, concurrent players.

Sony's other PC ports have performed far better, with God of War leading the pack at around 74,000 concurrents, Marvel's Spider-Man at around 66,000, Horizon Zero Dawn at around 56,000, and Days Gone at around 28,000.

It's worth noting that while Returnal debuted to a strong critical reception and was lauded with industry awards in the year following its release, it's a significantly smaller IP than that of God of War or Spider-Man.

Returnal was released for PC earlier this week and is currently the 165th most-played game on Steam in the last 24 hours.

However, even some of PlayStation's larger IPs have seemingly failed to make a large splash on PC so far, as Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves Collection managed a similarly low 10,851 concurrent player count during its debut weekend, despite being a far larger IP than Returnal.

Which is why Sony are fucking stupid for diluting their brand on platforms their games are not fully appreciated on. Just another reason Jim Ryan is failure.

It's probably just too difficult for modern day PC gamers.

for the love of god please tell me you didn't take that seriously

Aye, Returnal is one of those classic B tier exclusives that would tip the balance for a gamer in Playstation's favour over PC, Nintendo and Xbox (well, in a world where Xbox still had the 360's steady stream of AAA exclusive bangers, anyway).

The multiplatform games are a wash that favours PC, or at least that's the perception, due to comparison reviews like Digital Foundry using top end rigs, which in reality only about 1% of players would actually own.

AAA exclusives are always going to be big crowd pleasers, that have massive appeal and likely to be worth buying to just about everyone.

Be it Uncharted, Halo or Zelda, there's few people that won't be happy with a purchase, so on that front, all 3 consoles are pretty much on an equal footing, although obviously Nintendo has the advantage of being a 'family friendly' brand. However, we have seen from systems like the WiiU and Gamecube that that alone is not enough to guarantee Nintendo success.

Which, therefore, just leaves the B tier games to swing it in someones favour, the games that, once you listed all the multiplatform and big name exclusives, are then added on top as games you might not buy the system for, but you'd probably want, if you're already invested in the ecosystem. Games like Journey, Blue Dragon, Astral Chain or, in this case, Returnal, which aren't system sellers, but are made to hopefully cater to a niche taste that isn't being catered to elsewhere.

Those advert games, library fillers that cast a wide net of interest, were what Playstation used to excel in, and has since both abandoned regular development of and tossed away the reason they existed in the first place, by giving up exclusivity.

And I'm not surprised no one gives a shit now they're regularly on PC. Infact I expect sales of every port to be lacklustre going forward quite frankly, with the possible exception of Demon's Souls, or a hypothetical Bloodborne Remake, because Souls games will always have an audience.

The initial excitement over Playstation games coming to PC was always going to be big, just due to novelty, but now that novelty has gone, all we're left with is another late port of a game that had it's excitement and main sales window months, if not years ago.

They're old news that just won't drive ad traffic or word of mouth, and will have already been waited for so long by it's potential customers, that waiting a few months longer for a sale is extremely easy to do.

I mean just look at the anemic sales of the Tomb Raider reboot sequels, after their timed exclusivity to Xbox.

Despite no greater sales on xbox than the first game managed, that delay massively curtailed sales on Playstation 4 and PC, despite those 2 platforms accounting for over 80% of the series sales previously. Delaying a release on another platform does nothing to increase overall sales, because people will not change platform for a game that they will be able to get eventually, but they will have lost interest by the time it is available.

Not that simultaneous releases do any better. Xbox has been doing that since last gen on PC, and it sure as hell hasn't been benefitting their hardware sales or series success.

Admittedly, it's hard to tell how much this strategy is hurting them in comparison to the half dozen other ways they're fucking up, but it sure as hell isn't creating enough PC sales to offset the potential long term revenue they'd normally get by locking customers into their platform with traditional exclusives.

As I've said before, I don't think Sony will be harmed by PC releases any time soon, but I think they'll have already started to question exactly how cost effective the extra development costs are for these ports, even without hardware sales being taken into account, given how poorly this and the last Uncharted collection have sold.

I do however expect the PS5 to sell less than the PS4 by generations end, and the PS6 to sell less again should they maintain this approach of both not giving enough reasons to invest in their platform, with fewer niche B tier games gettung made, and creating ports that give potential customers a reason to invest in a PC instead of a Playstation.

Played some more, while being sick and not being able to really concentrate. Still had a great time.

Have to correct my statement regarding the performance: Even at 1440p and locked at 60, there are still drops at times. Not always and not that often, but definitely there. Either way, not a huge deal and the game looks great. The particles, the vegetation, the fluidity, the fog, the atmosphere - it's very unique. I spend some time running around and dashing through the fog to see how it reacts. I appreciate things like that, last time I've seen it was some Nvidia thing in Batman Arkham Knight I think.

Gameplay is crazy fun, with combat feeling amazing. There's a strong exploration aspect which I like. Didn't make it far yet, found the blade, visited the first house, found my first parasite, translated some alien language etc. But then I died at the first boss because I was dumb and swapped my awesome machine gun for the Slug Shot, which wasn't great for that fight at all. Was very close and I nearly got the boss, but my brain just wasn't on point because I'm still sick.
The story is creepy and the game keeps me interested, I want to learn more about the world.

This game is gonna be my first PS5 game, alongside Elden Ring. I have a big PS4 collection including a handful of "free PS4 > PS5 Upgrade" titles but Returnal will be THE game for PS5... I'm gonna savor it. Tried it on a Steam Deck this past week and... I'm pretty jealous of you PC players. This will probably be my first Steam Deck game too...

Tried this game for 30 minutes. Love it. Graphics are really good and controls responsive. Playing with "Epic" everything at Native 4k and RT maxed out 115+ fps plus.

I'm going to see if I get on any better with Hogwarts first as once I really sink my teeth into this I'm unlikely to go back.

First batch of mods dropped. Some weird stuff like removing all the fog, a mod to make it run on potato PCs etc. not much there for me yet - but I gladly take the Chromatic Aberration and Vignette removal. There's also a toggle for all HUD elements at once.

Explored the shit out of the first biome, full health, level 6 weapon, ready to beat the first boss. Wish me luck, it's a great run so far and would be a shame if it would end now.

I had runs like that which died 90+ minutes in just because a side room's door wouldn't open back up to let me out, or a random crash. The launch of the PS5 version sure had some fun moments lol

Which is why I scum-save as I mentioned earlier.

I do this when I reach a boss, so take a save backup just before. No fucking way I have the time to play for 90 mins multiple times just to have a chance of learning how to beat a boss.

This feature of the game, I no likey.

BTW if you want to remove Chromatic Aberration and the Vignette:

Got to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Returnal\Steam\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor

open the engine.ini and add

[SystemSettings]
r.Tonemapper.Quality=0
r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0

To each his own, but I found the game to be very rewarding and intense when it actually matters if you die.

Beat the first boss now, didn't even take damage this time.

One unfortunate thing: Using photomode during bossfights sucks, because when you move the camera etc, take a pic and then leave photomode, your character doesn't face the way she did before. She looks in the complete opposite direction, which is bad when you're dodging the bullet hell.

The second Biome feels easier than the first one for me, the enemies are easier to kill. Made it to the boss though and holy shit is he a pain in the ass. What a motherfucker. There is just so much.... stuff that kills you.

The key thing to remember with Returnal is that your dash affords a split second of invincibility. Not gonna say any more.
