I just don't understand why a game like DOOM ETERNAL runs so amazingly well on my rig at super max settings, ray tracing included, with DLSS off even, pegged @120fps with never a dip no matter what is going on... And that game looks awesome.
Because id tech is the best performing engine on the market right now. It's a miracle. For their use case, it's an engine tailored for their games and not broadly usable like UE5 is. Like, you don't have hugely complex architecture or object density in the Doom games. You had barely any vegetation and moving parts there. They put a lot of dev time into improving it for Indiana Jones and now Dark Ages. Indiana Jones now features vegetation and such. But there are reasons why for example Bethesda never went with that engine for their RPGs.
An engine that tries to cover basically all games like UE5 will always perform worse than a hand crafted one for shooters that has been worked on by specialists for that use case.
