Thread: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 [OT] - The French Connection (Good Internet Connection Recommended)

Well everyone, we had a good run. No way we can purchase the game now

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a stylish riff on the JRPG, but its real-time-infused combat is rarely as fun as it looks.
There are times the dissenting review is actually closer to the mark. Not always but its enough to mention.

Prime Hollywood Example would be Star Wars Ep VIII: The Last Jedi having a 90+ Rotten Tomato Critc Review score vs the I feel vastly more accurate 41 percent audience score.

Videogame wise examples would be Mass Effect 3, Bioshock Infinite, Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword all terrible games from my experience all getting 90+ consensus and universal praise from Gaming media.

Ultimate example is the infamous Twilight Princess 8.8 score which in hindsight I feel was actually a bit generous to that game which was good, but nowhere near as balanced in all aspects as Ocarina of Time.

That said, Expedition 33 is also likely a grandslam for a very promising new studio and franchise, if it survives the Oblivion Remaster doing the equivalent of the Kool Aid Man to its timeframe and potental sales. I do have concerns if there are actually visitable settlements and towns in the game (Final Fantasy XVI has a grand total of 3 dilapidated hamlets, the cities are cutscene only), and if they will stick the ending.

@Dacon

My trust in reviewers for all entertainment has been absolutely burned to cinders over the years especially when they all say good things. Yeah I'm keeping a close eye on Expedition 33 because it does look sick as fuck amazing and its really nice seeing a western studio do a turnbased RPG with Persona influence, but too many times I've done OTs for games that should have been amazing, and looked amazing and people said they were amazing but when I played them they absolutely were not.

The IGN Skyward Sword review is so fucking dumb and hilarious because of it.

"The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the greatest Zelda game ever created. It's the best game for Wii and one of the finest video game accomplishments of the past 10 years. The game has once again raised the bar and forged new territory for an iconic and innovative franchise. It's not enough that it finally establishes a powerful, stirring origin story or that it features near-perfect pacing. What puts Skyward Sword over the top is its layered, dense, absolutely perfect gameplay that manages to not only nail motion-controlled combat but remarkably offers a stunning level of diversity."

That should have been for Xenoblade Chronicles, though not the Wii version but the eventual Switch remaster that actually rounded out its foundation to become one of the best RPGs ever made.

Also lol at near perfect pacing for Skyward Sword, a Zelda title with the same three regions, a three time Imprisoned boss fight and 4 required timed stealth instant lose condition Silent Realm trials that somehow managed to combine every single bad aspect of the prior 3D Zelda's without any of their good aspects.

Hoping Expedition 33 has none of those issues. What I've seen and read is promising. Hell, I've seen mention of
superbosses and post game content.

Played for a few minutes on GamePass and the tutorial fight already showed me what I need to see, bought the Deluxe version on Steam. Because of course the fucking Xbox App doesn't recognize my controller so fuck this shit trash App.

First impression was bad, tech wise, with the cutscenes at 30fps with stutters on every camera cut. But the game itself runs fine. Also weird issue right at the start that only a small part of the screen was used, was only the case for the first few seconds. But look at the stutters in the frame graph. Either way, I really like what I've seen so far, will dive into it.

I only played a bit, still in the intro, but I have strong feelings about this already.

You can clearly feel that this was done by passionate people with good writing skills. The dialogue is very effective, I'm already in love with the world and the characters. I want to explore more of the world.

It's exactly what I'm talking about all the time. Games don't need huge budgets and many hundreds of people working on it. This game is clearly budget limited, when you run around and the characters talk in game, their lips don't even move. But I don't care because the writing and voice acting are just so effective. Coming from Starfield, Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar and the likes, this is such a strong contrast. I'm already, after like 20min, feeling way more attached to the characters than in all the other games combined. There are emotions, there's soul, there's real talent.

Even a quick talk with some kids that are playing was good and entertaining, very charming. Oh and you hear people fucking, which is great. It's so good to see when a game comes together well. In other games I'd complain about stuff like stiff animations, overblown glow, no HDR etc. but it's not that important here.

Can't wait to play more!

Guess I shouldn't be surprised that the publication that scored that Gollum game higher than Space Marine 2 is once again being contrarian.

I already have this baby downloaded and ready to go! I'm going in pretty much blind too, I haven't watched a trailer since the MS show and I haven't read any reviews, just looked at the scores. The comparisons to Lost Odyssey, The Last Remnant and Resonance of Fate are very welcome, as I played and beat all 3. The last 2 being pretty hard games.

I'm loving the Oblivion: Remastered but I can always return to it in the future. I haven't played a JRPG in so long. I'm super excited to get started after work.

Meh games are subjective. One man's Uncharted is another man's Uncharted. I once knew someone that didn't even like Cyberpunk because there was too much talking and not enough action!

I get that it's opinions but generally well made games seem to always skew toward higher scores from ALL publications and you very rarely find outliers in this industry. 7 is still a good score, of course! However, I can't take PC Gamer particularly seriously these days.

This is a heavily story and character driven game, and it's one of the best at that. Gameplay seems awesome as well. I mean, if you don't want a focus on characters and emotions, you shouldn't pick a game that focuses on characters and emotions.

It seems to be a great game. And Cyberpunk was mostly action and gameplay after the beginning of the game. Incredible gameplay at that, it's a very good shooter.

@Hostile_18 hating on this game because it doesn't have pronouns and top surgery scars.

His usual grift.

We should have a hate OT thread for that kind of attitude. I'm honestly tired of it and will leave for a while.

Stay! I requested a perma earlier this month on Gaf, so this is my home now. I was just thinking yesterday how much better this place is. We need you in the discussions! 🥲

The painteress is a bitch

I almost wish I hadn't watched the HCG video I posted. I had no idea what the story was about but it seems awesome now that I know. Going on an epic adventure to take her out...that's motivation. I'm applying a lot of willpower to not buy the game right now. Lol.

This is why I love flying blind when it comes to release calendars. I never feel like I'm waiting and when things release, it's such a pleasant surprise.

Grabbed the deluxe. Gonna support the shit out of these guys.

You know what's strange? You've got a development team of about 30ish people putting out an AAAish game their first go round and just crushing the reviews across the board. That's so weird that this is possible with that small of a team, right? RIGHT? I swear I thought you needed hundreds of people and a giant bloated budget to even come close to making something this quality.

Might be a turning point for the industry. I'm sure some execs are going to notice this, or maybe a smaller group of people within a giant bloated company. It is possible to put out a great game with a smaller team and a smaller budget. There's definitely going to be some reevaluations after the success of this game
