Thread: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 [OT] - The French Connection (Good Internet Connection Recommended)

just generally, why are people into turn based games?
I am gaming for like 30 years and I was never into it. I don't understand what's the point?
I understand back in the past when real time combat was hard to develop... but why now? It's like pretending to battle rather than do the cool stuff.

It's not an attack. Just a question from turn based ignorant.

I'll only speak for Clair Obscur:

It's a very deliberate and tactical approach to combat. You build your team with a wide variety of abilities and buffs, to then execute it depending on the enemies and their weaknesses. Abilities and buffs stack, are being build up over multiple rounds with your characters influencing each other.

The depth of the three characters and their individual abilities can't be managed in real time, that's why it's turn based.

The combat is really respectful of your time as well, no lengthy animations to sit through. I didn't like Baldurs Gate 3 because it felt like doing the smallest things took forever. Here it is wham, bam, thank you mam. Also the parrying, dodge, jump, gun aiming and qte timing makes it the perfect blend of both turn based and real time systems, IMO. Combat is actually enjoyable in this compared to where it can sometimes be just a progression barrier in other games.

It's nice to have a chill option where reflexes play no role (obviously, not in the case of the thread's game in question). Exchanging turns with the enemy means you have to use your turns better than they use their turns, essentially. Both sides are bound by the same rules so the team that makes better use of turns will be the winner. The idea of the "action economy" plays a big role in any decent RPG battle system or 4x strategy system.

Personally, I grew up with board games too and still play some crunchy "hobby board gamer" kind of board games, so turn based stuff is pretty normal for me.

Mostly strategy as others have said. A great example of this was in Octopath Traveler. A lot of reviewers and random people online said the game was too hard and you had to grind levels to advance past hard bosses. That's not true if you understood how the battle system worked. Figuring out how to use the battle system properly allowed you to breeze through the game and take down bossed without too much trouble.

Turn based RPGs are a thoughtful, deliberate genre of gaming. Plus it can be a nice chill out/relaxing experience if a game has an interesting world to explore and a great OST to go with it.

Now, the stalking begins.

Sandfall Interactive is an independent studio. Sony, MS, Tencent and others will be preparing offers next week.

God I hope not, I hope they stay a close knit small studio. Anytime studios go big and corporate their games lose their soul. This feels like something that could have come out in the PS2 era, before gaming became the bloated slothful demon it is. It has all the hallmarks of a game that people made for themselves, not by committee.

This game man. It's really what I thought FF7 Remake was going to be. It's an action turn based game and it's clicking for me in every regard.

Now you done gone and made me sad.

I need the creepy old guy and body horror monster to come back. I was so hyped after the boat journey, but I've done nothing but fight different shapes and sizes of cinder blocks for the last 5 hours.

It's like comfort food in the form of games. You can chill a bit, watch your characters do cool moves, look at the numbers go up, enjoy the jingle when you level up, etc.

Also, you can think of it sort of like chess where you deliberate a bit on your choices. Got a different feel to it.

Played 2h more last night, beat a few optional bosses can now upgrade the Pictos.

Combat is just sublime. The characters have very distinct abilities and ways to play them, Maelle is super cool to play and skill around. With all the abilities and perks you can apply, you can do very effective chains that you can trigger.

For example, some strong abilities and attacks only trigger if the enemy is in a certain status, like marked or burning. So you spec another character around applying that effect, and you spec the other character towards taking advantage of it. Meaning there are all of these connections and dependencies that are very powerful - but you need to take into account that a party member can be taken out or stunned by an enemy, so you are always trying to find a good balance between the party being interconnected but not being to dependent on each other.

I'm putting as many points in hit damage for Maelle as possible, for that sweet 200% damage increase to hit hard. She's the one to take advantage of all the status effects. Lune has a high critical hit chance and does her fire thing to apply that status. While I specced Gustave towards getting a lot of hits in, breaking guards and agility.

This is a great explanation

WELL DUH. I didn't even know Heinz but his voting thread picks were horrible and wrong every single time. So wrong i legit was getting mad. Judged ever since. Complete trash taste. Sorry bootleg ketchup man.

After all these years it still BOTHERS you :ROFLMAO:

Maelle is so broken. With that sword that starts her off in Virtuose Stance and all the attack buffs you can equip, her regular attacks do 9,999 damage (at level 19).

I took her from 19 to 25 in like 20 minutes just by soloing Julien in the Hidden Gestral Arena, you get 32k xp per pop if you don't take damage. One thing that sucks is that party members who are out of the fighting party only get half xp, that's a mechanic I fucking hate. Sciel seems good but she's underleved compared to my other guys so it doesn't motivate me to ever put her in the fighting party which only widens the gap.

Hopefully you guys are using the Roulette Lumina. Don't be bad at math. 100% x 2 is 200% but 50% + 200% is 250% so basically over time you're getting a straight up 25% damage boost. Although It might be less advantageous later on if you can't break the 9,999 damage barrier.

So after playing Elden Ring, trying to decide my next game, was super burnt on FF 7 remake and rebirth with its super bloat and padding.

Opinions from people playing the game on pacing, story, and music? Musics important.

Gameplay sounds great so no worried about that

Music is top tier.

The synergy between party members and how their skills build on each other's gives me Darkest Dungeon vibes.

Put the Artist haircut on Sciel as soon as you get it (it's bought off of a merchant on the world map). You're welcome!

The Dodge and parry mechanic is very souls-like. Basically there's no visual cue of when to dodge or parry and enemies all have multiple attack patterns, some that look similar but have slightly different timings.

Wait til you get the second parry.

That mime in flying waters is strong af :(

I beat it yesterday, it puts up the mime wall as a defense, which is very strong if you aren't prepared for it. You need to break it. Equip shield breaking abilities and once the shield is down, it's easy going.
