Official Thread
I'd hold off on the "POLISH" bit, IGN AND GAMESPOT have both stated it's only 30FPS and has DIPS in performance, which should not exist in a 30 fps game.

Shameful that DF is giving them an easy pass on the 20 FPS dips "feels like an old school..." what bullshit.

The game looks very muddy, and it has dips... these are all things that Nintendo knew would happen as the dips happen when the guy cut down a tree near other trees...

Feel like these are all things to blame on the hardware. When a game runs reasonably well on hardware it shouldn't be able to run on, that is considered polish. Unless you think Hogwarts for PS4 is unpolished because the hardware forces the game to reduce resolution, framerate, and reflections...

I pre-ordered the other day. Hyped.

It took me about 3 years to complete the first one cos I didn't want it to end. Got the DLC and collected everything (not Korok seeds), did every side quest I could find, all the master trials. Didn't get all the shrines but once I completed the game I knew I'd be done.

HYPED.

opened the thread on my MacBook and it's glorious (before I just checked in on my phone and not all images have loaded). Must have been a lot of effort.

Can't keep giving Nintendo a pass for hardware, they're CHOOSING THIS HARDWARE.

It's up to developers to work WITH IT, and OPTIMZE FOR IT.

It's not OK to do that bullshit, Nintendo is working with old shit, they've been since launch.

A game that DOES NOT WORK WELL, and is asking FULL+$10 MSRP needs to work flawlessly.

They've had 6 +years to make this game work flawlessly, especially since it's the SAME ENGINE as the last one. Meaning you can't even say "oh they took all that time to make a new engine" they fully understood the downfalls of this engine, and the hardware, they're making it do new things sure, but they still had all that time to JUST make it work flawlessly.

The thing with your bullshit is that 20 FPS still FEELS like 20 FPS no matter how many excuses you give Nintendo.

Here's a fun thought experiment, the new God Of War comes out it's targeting 30 fps, and dips drastically during points, does Sony get a freeride? Spoilers the answer is no. Microsoft was dragged through the coals for Halo Infinite not hitting solid 60 fps. Nintendo gets a pass on a game that has an engine that was out in 10 years ago no performing at locked 30 fps...

Bought and it downloaded while I beat Metroid Prime, super excited for this one, I have many snacks, drinks and drugs ready to keep me going all night!

One bummer is that I read the "16" on the date and stopped reading because I assumed it would be "16 May" but I just noticed its "16 June" ffs lol its not like I'll be done by then but I really wanted to be able to check the hidden stats of food/items if experimentation produced confusing results:

But are you playing Tears of the Kingdom and seeing when and how often it dips to 20 fps? I feel like that matters a lot. I definitely felt that the hardware hurt BotW, but the gameplay was that good. It's not all about visuals, which BotW looks really good but has the obvious resolution, framerate, and draw distance limitations that do detract from the visuals just a bit.

But a video game is about how fun it is, and the visuals are there to support that. In terms of just how fun a game is, BotW, and I believe TotK too, is just a lot of fun to play. That's what should matter most about a video game.

Taken in that context, it's not giving Nintendo a pass if the game is just that fun. The visuals could be better, and the performance would obviously be better without stutter or dips, but it isn't impacting the fun.

Aren't you the fella that was taking hot dumps all over the pre release thread too?

If you mean I was calling Nintendo out for sticking to all the old quest styles with shitty rewards, bland NPCs, using the same map, keeping things in this new game that people hated about the old game and still not being able to do 30 FPS all the time(this is a new one) as "hot dump" then yea sure.

The industry is watching what Nintendo is doing, if they learn that this shit is all acceptable, this will only hurt the gaming industry as whole.

Anyone fancy babbling incoherently about Zelda in voice chat on Discord while I make dinner? Pooheads are not invited.

No.
Cool story bro. Your point?

Also add part 4 & 5 in the OP.

Thanks! Added parts 4 and 5 to OT. Interesting Xenoblade Chronicles 3 had three interviews, while TotK has five? so far.

I don't recall if Nintendo were even doing these Ask the Dev interviews for BotW? They are a nice look into what's going on with a games development, decision making, priorities, ect.

I would say that every flaw that can be detected should be pointed out. This is going to be a long journey, we can take our time complimenting and criticizing this game; TOTK is a massive game so there will be plenty of time for both over the years to come. I'm gonna try to stretch the game out at least eight months I think since there is so much to see in the overworld. BOTW took me roughly four months to complete, but at the time my knowledge of open world games was zero so this experience will be different

Hahahaha. Oh wow you must be so concerned about "the industry".

Fuckers have been going all in on loot boxes, microtransactions, shitty PC ports, live service bullshit for years.

Nintendo makes a single player game with tons of content that is well received both critically and by the consumers too? "Oh noes what if the rest of the industry copies them!?"

How many hours do you guys expect to play this week? I'll probably try to play at least a couple hours or so tonight, maybe about 5-6 hrs Fri-Sun if things go well. Straight up, my mission is to gather like a million pieces of wood and do something crazy like light the entire Yiga Clan's base on fire (if it's still there)

I'm taking 5 years off work to play this game! I'm hyped!

Gameplay over graphics won't hurt the industry, just the opposite. BotW and TotK are back to back successes that pulled this graphics whore away from Sony and MS back towards Nintendo. I want more of this, a lot more of it.

If anything a lot of the big hitters in the industry should be asking themselves why the biggest open world game of the year and likely GOTY winner is running on far older and far less powerful tech.

The likes of Ubisoft and EA should easily be able to come up with an open world, single player, game that blows this away and for some reason they just can't.

Jedi Survivor at launch a couple of weeks ago struggled to run on setups worth more than 5k.

Nintendo is the least of this industrys problems.

Watched the DF analysis, pretty impressed tbh.

Sure, image quality, textures and stuff are bad because of the ancient hardware. But what they do here with the Switch is incredible. The scale, design, artwork, physics, what a package. The amount of systems, physics and interactivity are something I'd expect from big open world games on current gen consoles. But they all fail at it, one of my main issues in videogaming - static environments and missing interaction between the player and the world. And this Nintendo game on shitty ass hardware shows how it's done, and kicks ass while showing it off.
