Asteroid City (2023)

asteroid-city-movie-from-wes-anderson.jpg

Overall it was a good film. Its very much a modern Wes Anderson where it all has a stage/doll house feel. But it is very well executed. The cast is absolutly bloated, but they are (mostly) leveraged sparingly and simply add a richness to the world. Johansson and Schwartzman's flat characters were perfectly simpatico.

Where I think it could have been better was ditching the two layers of the story. The superflous stage play and actor backstory layer. And then the events of Ateroid City/the play layer. I think the film would have been exponetially stronger without the former layer. Maybe a brief front of it before the real story would have probably been ok. But the frequent jumping between the two was a net loss for me.

Again overall a good Anderson film. Would recommend to fans of his work.

I've been on a Star Trek kick. Took a break from TNG to watch the first season of SNW, then rewatched the Kelvin trilogy, (then dipped out briefly for S2 of The Bear, which was awesome,) and now back to SNW for S2.

Rewatching Entourage seasons 1-8 plus the movie for the 3rd time. Definitely better than most modern shows 👌🏻

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 last night.

Have enjoyed the series, so I was expecting to like this one too. It feels like a natural progression after 2. Turning even deeper into the humor and zaniness.

The overall plot was pretty good. Loved seeing the High Evolutionary, though I didnt care for how he was protrayed with the stretched skin face instead of the comic variant. Also was a little let down by Warlock. But they all worked well enough.

The Rocket backstory was good and really pulls on the heart strings. So be prepared for that.

Overall it was about as good as part 2. So if you liked that, you will probably like this one.

Oh and I know its dumb, but the whole time I was distracted by Nebula. It felt like she was fatter/softer. IDK if the actress was preggers or just lax at the gym, but it was noticeable.

I just watched The Flash. So people hated this movie? I actually thought it was pretty good.

I went into it already strongly disliking Ezra Miller and thinking an ugly Supergirl felt like a big cop out, but ended up enjoying the movie anyway. It did some things pretty well IMO. Though, there's some really questionable CG here and there.

I thought it was great, personally. Supergirl was pretty cute too when she had her shit together

Yeah asteroid city is in competition for my most hated film of the year

Surprisingly I enjoyed it for the most part.

I usually have a hard time with pretentious "deep message" type movies, but it was surrounded with enough humour, style and a mostly fine narrative to where I had a good time. It's hard not to acknowledge the level of craft that went into it. He makes better and better looking movies although the general story quality is spotty.

Only definite problems were the split-second gay insert, the unnecessary nude scene they used a stand-in for, and the alien was too goofy looking (although the Jeff Goldblum gag made me laugh quite a bit)

Nothing in that movie made me laugh honestly. Also that wasn't a stand-in that was Scarlett Johansson naked you can even find her talking about it and interviews and how it embarrassed the director. It's also the same body she had when she went nude in under the skin lol

Oh ok then, but they purposefully hid her face so not sure what the point is (I mean it was pointless regardless like most nude inserts in movies).

I just watched Oppenheimer on IMAX. What an incredible piece of filmmaking by Christopher Nolan, the movie is a masterpiece. Everyone started clapping at the end, I haven't experienced that with many movies. The nuclear bomb scene was amazing, the tension in the room was off the chart, I don't think people were even breathing, I couldn't hear a sound. Great great movie. Highly recommend it.

You are the second person who has said this is a good film. Its definitely on my radar to watch.

I'm still trying to fully collect my thoughts on Barbie. As a big fan of Gerwig and Baumbach, I wanted to enjoy this more than I did. However, it's a complete acid trip of a film. I'll give it that.

Margot and Gosling were captivating throughout, and some of the jokes are quite potent. Others were duds. One joke about the Snyder cut of the Justice League landed so flatly in my theater that you could hear a pin drop. There's a surprising amount of music throughout the movie, and the movie spends a large amount of time beating you over the head with its messaging. A little subtlety would've went a long way. Also some further character development. Overall its a movie about accepting your humanity, your flaws, and eventual death. Which... also spends a large second act 'fighting the patriarchy' and makes me wonder just how much the families in the audience with their daughters enjoyed their time overall.

Weird movie, man.

I'm seeing Oppenheimer tomorrow morning. Can't wait

Ehhhh

Just saw Oppenheimer and left feeling absolutely nothing. More like Meh-ppenheimer. People going to an IMAX to see 3 hours of people talking lmao.

Enjoyed Barbie more, at least that made me laugh here and there.

I had a family in front of me with two very young blonde girls. I couldn't imagine why theyd take their kids to see Oppenheimer of all things. They walked out during the Exorcist trailer thankfully. Mustve scared the kids.

Another pair of older women left during the second sex scene.

Its so weird because everyone seems to love Barbie and Oppenheimer and while I can definitely see the merit in each, I wasnt blown away by either.

I honestly cant stop thinking about either movie. I'm due for a rewatch of both.

Either I'll head out again next weekend or I'll wait for a cam rip

watched the 'Dark Pale' comedy routine by Jim Gaffigan last night w my wife.

Not that Gaffigan was some hilarious person, but even for him most of the jokes were phoned in pretty hard. The browbeating against anti vaxxers, on climate change, and on Jan 6th felt like he was fulfilling some bullet points on a contract.

"ok we'll green light yet another special but you have to make sure to make fun of MAGA folks"

That's really sad to hear

Movie and writer strike is going to suck for the few pieces of entertainment that are actually good and deserve more seasons.

Watching now:
Wednesday - Its ok. Jarring seeing the Addams Family set in the present day.

On break, because while absolutely amazing 100 episodes of an amazing anime is still 100 episodes:
Dragon Quest: Adventures of Dai

May get to:
Invincible

Waiting for next season if ever:
Arcane - Season 2 if ever
For All Mankind - Waiting for Season 4
Jack Reacher - Waiting for Season 2
Thunderbolt Fantasy Next Movie/Season 4

Ended on a high note, probably for the best:
Ted Lasso
Moon Knight

Dropped due to getting sick of the nonstop constant brutality, gore and shock value:
The Boys
House of the Dragon

Zero Interest
Current Climate Futurama
Wheel of Time
Rings of Power
Witcher - Everything with Cavils departure is a absolute travesty. Actually purposely fucking up the Witcher, Wheel of Time, Lord of the Rings has outright killed what could have been a new age for fantasy adaptations.

I only see things changing if Nintendo greenlights a Legend of Zelda animated movie with the success of the Mario movie and it grosses 1 billion at the box office, then the fantasy genre may see a bigger shift and more higher quality video game adaptations.

Ditto space opera by slapping Foundation on some shit IP and all of the recent attempts to reboot Stargate which I hope never get off the ground. Dune Part 2, Avatar 3 may have some hope yet. Rebel Moon also may have a effect, but I'm not sure the usual quality of writing Zack Snyder is usually involved with will be enough to carry it. Comments on it being a "darker and more mature" Star Wars are red flags for me. Star Wars Ep IV has a planet and billions of people being vaporized just to make a example.

watching this reboot with the whole family. Washes the mediocre Gaffigan out of the system. My wife was laughing and cheering the most but even the kids thought it was hilarious.

I enjoyed this. Really in the same vein as Gran Torino (I believe it was the same writer). Can't believe Clint is in his 90's and still going on as strong as he is. I watched the special features and one of the actors said that Clint really played the main character as weak as you would think a man of that age is, but Clint in real life is popping up out chairs and really gets around well. Mad respect for that.

Cinema with our oldest daughter and her best friend, we watched Lassie - A New Adventure.

A kids movie, obviously. They liked it, it hit some of the important notes for them. Dog action, dumb villains, some tension, and dogs. Also, dogs.

Acting was bad in places and the overall tone was very surprising. I expected a cheerful fun movie. But it felt kinda depressed and sad for like 70% of the movie, with the characters being down and sad, very muted moot in many scenes. And I didn't like the values at display here. No father figure in the movie, it's about a divorced woman with two adopted kids, who's obviously strong and knocks out the male villain in the end with a punch that wouldn't even hurt anyone. Strong females at it for the most part.

Many issues with time, place, distances and speed, many scenes didn't make any logical sense, pretty messy.

Searching for movies to watch with our 7yo on Disney+. Watched the trailer for the live action Pinocchio movie, LOL there's a gay black male furry in a dress, instantly turned it off what the fuck.

Instead, we ended up watching Beverly Hills Chihuahua and then the second movie the next day. Dumb kids movies where the first one had a big budget with big names, while the second was a more budget production with completely different actors all of the sudden. Obviously bad movies but no woke shit, just about family and loyalty, which was a good thing. My daughter liked the movies.

Two absolutely bubble gum products that entertained all These years later.

Date With An Angel (1987)

ODg

Dumbest fucking movie... while also being entertaining and worth following. Humor is surface level but works. I was grinning and enjoying its campiness.

Drop Dead Fred (1991)

anBn

As a kid I just though this movie was a 'lower" budget comedy. Now watching in my 40's I see its deeper messages for abused and troubled kids. Fairly entertaining.

Two back to back Phoebe Cates films without Gremlins or nipples.
