Thread: Star Wars Outlaws Thread |OT| Ubi shot first
Official Thread
I would have thought that "one of the biggest publishers in the world with a huge budget for development and a well established IP with several fantastic games connected to it should be able to do much much better than this" is a perfectly valid criticism.

As far as I have seen the best defense offered up for this game is that "it's OK".

I just want another Far Cry 5.

Then you've got those using the ReeetardEra/Sarkeesian playbook. "Those who are complaining about the game are not good people and you wouldn't want to be like them now, would you?"

Unfortunately some people think that people pointing out that an undercooked, overpriced, and overdue game is medicore/bad somehow ruins the fun for them and they must therefore defend it.

Incidentally, this was my banner gif for the Star Wars Outlaws OT:

And the introduction video:

Metal Gear Solid 5 released in 2015 on hardware with less RAM, CPU and Tech. Quiet looks like the actual Woman she is modeled after. Even at low res compared to PS3 vs PS4. She isn't ugly as the complaints of her being too sexy is well known; low resolution is a cop out excuse, but hey, if it helps one cope, good on ya.

Batman Arkham series has iterated on a close combat system that should be the base for any third person adventure game. Even Avalanche was able to incorporate a limited, yet serviceable with limited tactics in a fight, version of it in Mad Max in 2015, as well.

You can see where I am going with this, but the point is, what is Ubisoft even doing with all the new tech, money and roadmaps from other developers and the experience to build on it?

Here is something to consider. Would this game have any groundswell if it wasn't tied to Star Wars? Should it have been Beyond Good and Evil 2? Even with the open world Ubisoft has done in both Asssassin's Creed and Far Cry, why did they drop the ball here? Assassin's Creed has the Arkham Asylum CQB fight systems, with weapons that behave differently. Why not here?

I hope the above critique assuages the hurt butts from copy pasted gripes and generic critiques. It is about as good as it is going to get, and the sad thing is I have to point to games made 9 years ago on systems with less power to make that point.

It's strange. You see the in game cutscenes while speaking to a quest giver and it looks like pure ass. Yet in previous Massive/Ubisoft games, the NPCs were phenomenal. The Division they looked great, Odyssey awesome. It HAS to be DEI, loss of talent for it to regress this much. Shit, the main character doesn't look human and looks odd.

Star Wars Outlaws doesn't let you free aim and fire from your speeder because Massive didn't want you to "feel as if you can ride in and assault people"
Gamesradar article

For all of the freedom Star Wars Outlaws hands over to players, principally the ability to carve your own path as a scoundrel across multiple Outer Rim territories, it does have a few surprising restrictions. Developer Massive Entertainment has a tendency to lean on strict stealth encounters to drive main campaign missions, leaving little room for experimentation – an issue I contended with all throughout my time with the open world adventure.

Something I didn't cover in my Star Wars Outlaws review was another restriction which surprised me: the inability to freely fire from the saddle of your speeder. As Key Vess, you are able to ride across some pretty wide spaces – delving into regions of places like Akiva and Tatooine that haven't been seen before in other Star Wars media. You'll frequently encounter aggressors whilst out exploring, such as Imperial patrols and assassination squads from Syndicates you screwed over one too many times, and you'll have precious few ways to defend yourself.

Star Wars Outlaws' lead gameplay designer tells me that one reason this design decision was made is to do with fantasy fulfillment – Massive Entertainment looking at elements of the original trilogy of films and trying to find ways to evoke similar feelings through interactive play. "What we see in the Star Wars movies is speeder chases – you being chased. We see you having to dodge and get away, and then try to explode their speeder or make them crash into a tree – especially when we look back at the original trilogy," says Fredrik Thylander. "We wanted to make a mechanic that made you experience chases, rather than having you feel as if you can ride in and assault people from the speeder."

Kay Vess isn't entirely defenseless from her speeder. There are inputs which allow you to dodge from side-to-side, sideswiping anybody jostling alongside you (something which can easily evoke the Endor speeder chase, particularly when racing through the forestlands of Akiva) and through speeder customisation the ability to boost away from danger. You can also shoot from your speeder in Star Wars Outlaws, but only in an exceptionally limited capacity – Adrenaline Rush, which fills over time, is an activated ability that lets you mark and execute enemies with cinematic style. You aren't, however, able to free-aim and fire as you might be able to do in something like Red Dead Redemption.

"The other part of this decision is just that if we made it so that you can free-aim and shoot from the speeder then we'd also have to then make the speeder drive nicely when you're not looking forward, which is actually a really hard thing when trying to maximize speed, jumping, and off-road capabilities," says Thylander. "So to really flesh out the fun of those elements, this was something we decided not to also have to factor into how the speeder drives. It wasn't an easy choice, and we are happy to listen to how people experience it."

That feedback will surely be coming as Massive begins the process of post-mortem on Star Wars Outlaws. For now I remain undecided, for as fun as the experience of high-octane speeder chases can be throughout the adventure I did find myself longing for a little more control – particularly when the Galactic Empire sends Death Squadrons out into the field once a Wanted status spirals out of control. Truth be told, maybe I'd have swallowed the shooting restrictions had Massive allowed me to customize my ride to look a little more like the iconic 74-Z speeder bike… just one reason of many that I hope the studio one day works on a sequel.

I pointed this out in my critque when comparing it to Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 earlier in this thread. Glad to see it come back up, and pointed out.

The "Open World" isn't even open by Ubisoft Standards.

This game should have had Han Solo as the main character, Chewie as companion, ditched the stealth for pure action, had you piloting the Millennium Falcon. WIN. Have the story about him struggling with his old life and associates and his new friends. It's right fucking there. Nah, let's have an ugly broad dress up as Jan Solo and punch storm troopers in the head bare handed.

We could all come up with 100 cool side quests for a Han Solo game. Greedo's family pissed, other bounty hunters, Leia bs, past girlfriends, Chewie backstory on and on. Is there just a normal motherfucker that produces a game anymore? "We have to have a stronk woman, and cute little pet.". FUCK!

It is ever readily apparent that Disney Star Wars is no longer for the original fans. It is only for the new fans they mint wholesale out of online theater kids who have no connection with what made Star Wars great to begin with.

It was said this game was also inspired by 1313, but that quickly went away shortly after tech demos of whatever this game turned out to be started to appear.

Man... that's sad. I really do hope they manage to patch it up and turn it into something decent. The assets seem generally high quality and the combination of gameplay systems sounds really enjoyable on paper. Looks like it just needed more time in the oven.

I like how her animation for Grabbing enemies by the head while she stealth pulls them down looks like they made only ONE asset for her hands...that being she is gripping the width of a Storm Trooper helmet, which will look like it fits, but anyone else, she is gripping air as EVERY character falls backwards in the same stealth knockout. They didn't make her hands fit the rest of the models of other characters she is fighting in the game.

Heheh HAHA.

The fact that she is able to do anything to armored soldiers with her bare hands is stupid even for a video game. Especially how she just punches their helmets and they get knocked out. Hilarious.

The only thing I will accept are the dopey storm troopers unable to hit the broad side of a barn and having terrible situation awareness.

How does Ubisoft do it? So real. Muh AAA gaming. *SoymouthGape.gif*
