For the rail shooter lovers, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Demo available to if you don't believe me

Only seeing this on a phone screen so far, but this looks kinda sick!? Comes out in 6 days!

This looks sick

Dace made a good video on it

Also great quote from the dev chatting with Kabrutus:

"Aha yeah they are all agenda free except metal, games and fun.

Well thanks for all your work in the #indiedev scene i see you out there all the time , and as everything has become so DEI or agenda driven it has become harder for real games for real gamers to get any press. everyone looking for the controversy. However I will just keep plodding along doing my games however I want :)"

Sweet! Raiden Fighters is really good. I'm glad they're porting it to modern systems.

I just grabbed the PC port a couple of nights ago and it's rough but playable — never played to originals but the word is it's a hack job. Pretty excited about this!

Crystal Breaker Nov 28 PC/Nov 29 Switch

Demo on Steam, game feels very promising! Aggressive caravan style with an inversion of the bullet hell "focus" to slow down… you get a "boost" button to hit breakneck speed for proximity kills and getting stage secret bonuses. Per level leaderboards embody the caravan spirit!

Anyone else sink time into my namesake?

It's still my favorite. After searching high and low and playing all eras of shmups, it's still the absolute best. My physical copies (PS2 and Switch) are two of my favorite games on the shelf.

I've only played the first one, or maybe 2nd

Cause it's DonPachi and then DoDonPachi, right? I've sunk a lot of hours in DoDonPachi for Saturn.

My personal favorite is Layer Section. I love how simple it is for mechanics, just guns and the lock on system for things beneath you. The OST and pixel art are God-tier, never gets old and damn fun to learn.

DoDonPachi is my 2nd favorite. Another relatively simple game but I think it's much harder than Layer Section, especially if you want the true ending.

My man.

Yeah Layer Section is still one of my favorites. After all these years it's still one of the most cinematic shmups of all time. I love the sprite scaling and rotation. Plus the actual game mechanics are really fun.

All the DDPs are good to be honest. CAVE nailed the essence of the genre with that franchise and I can't name a bad one.

Yea, I really need to check out the other ones. I know I'd enjoy them, just that backlog and all, lol. Too many games to play, not enough time.

What's nice is that any skills you've picked up in DDP will carry over to the other games. Yeah there are scoring differences and the later games get much more bullet-helley, but they're all cut from the same cloth.

My favs are DDP. I sunk a ton of time into the Saturn version and arcade version. DDP Dai Ou jou, which I played to death on PS2 but also a fair amount of Switch and emulator. And lastly, the last one Sai Dai Ou Jou which is so crammed with modes and options you could never get bored with it.

Not much time… maybe 10 hours digging into the M2 port and the "challenges" going through chains and bees in small chunks, plus the way too easy Novice mode.
I think I have an unelightened view: I didn't understand how the strict chaining didn't make it have the same issues as Ikaruga as far as being rote and super strict. I still don't honestly, but I had some convos with fellow shumppers that made it clear I'm missing something. Chaining in general isn't my favorite scoring mechanic. Hoping to deep dive next year. It plays like an absolute dream and the OST is incredible.

Looking for a decent and cheap switch Shmup. Any advice ?

What's cheap? I go through eShop sales every Thursday. I'll post here any juicy deals, but in general shmups not called Darius or Raiden are under $20.

Crimzon Clover is the easiest to recommend, definitely grab the LiveWire CAVE ports before they get delisted (Espgaluda II, Dodonpachi Resurrection), Andro Dunos 2 is an amazing old-school shooter that's always cheap (but goes on sale pretty often), then there's Crystal Breaker at the end of the month and Schildmaid MX should be by the end of the year.

Depends on your platforms, and it depends on what's on sale. Most shmups nowadays are 10-20 dollars but you can frequently find them on sale for $5 or less. That's where I'd look first, just hunt the sales and try one out.

Geometry Wars, Void Scrappers, and 20 Minites Till Dawn are all about 5 bucks right now. Those aren't classic-style shmups though.

Batsugun and Dogyuun are both $8 on Steam. Danmaku Unlimited 3 and Jamestown and Ikaruga are $10. Those are solid.

Simple "dodge and shoot" with your mouse (or pen) in a 3D vector based world with a synthwave soundtrack for under $3 USD. I can already tell this is going to be addicting:)

Just started playing Valfaris: Mecha Therion. I was looking for something a little more "adventure-y" and "chill" to play while I'm doing more strict practice with another shooter atm. This game is fantastic. Playing on the highest available difficulty (Great Horned Owl - 2HP) and itching to unlock 'True Metal' (1HP).
Still don't love the upgrade system from Valfaris... upgrading early weapons vs. saving currency for later weapons, but the checkpoint system makes a long game (for a shmup) very segmented and almost a "quick respawn" game like Celeste.
Great metal vibes, fun weapons, great horizontal obstacle-based level design... and gorgeous on PC at 120fps.

Valfaris Mecha Therion Instruction manual:

Wonderful review from a shmup player:

Tomorrow on Switch.

EDIT: Stage start at 2:30 and they gradually get longer. Stage 7 is a 5 minute caravan and Stage 8 is 10 minutes!!!

Would be amazing to see a good port of Cotton 2 & Boomerang arcade versions someday! Not sure how AA requires licensing, but Success also published Psyvariar in the arcades…

Hope you enjoy them!!! S.T.E.E.L. has become my side piece for any shmup I'm playing. Best proc-gen shmup ever IMO.

Not familiar with SDOJ at all. @DonDonDonPata was this mode in the X360 version!? (Linked to 1:29 in the trailer)

That looks like some kind of final boss "true route" sort of thing. I'm pretty sure this is the same port 360 got, which is fine by me. I sold my 360 copy several years ago for a few 100 bucks, I'm glad I'll be able to own a copy again, it's the second-best DDP and definitely the very best one to buy if youre a new player wanting to try out the series.

Edit: I could be wrong @Spiders but I do not think this port contains the EXA revisions/mode that came out several years ago
