They just look fun imo. That oldschool RPG style for some reason is very appealing to me lately. Like NES through GBA era style look. I didn't know Akira Toriyama created the artstyle until a few years ago too, a few months before buying the Switch I found out

How is Mario Golf? I played Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour for the Gamecube a few times but it looked kinda tricky so we just stuck to the Mario Party and Mario Kart games back then

Looks Like Nintendo Has Been Reprinting 3DS Retail Games For A Final Hurrah

The 3DS was officially discontinued back in September 2020, with hardware production ending for a system that couldn't match the dizzy heights of its predecessor (the DS), but nevertheless remains a favourite for plenty of Nintendo gamers. There are definitely a few members of the 3DS fan club among our staff.

Though the only remaining hardware to buy will be legacy stock, we received an interesting tip from community member @pikuri_ highlighting that there appear to be various games (first- and third-party) getting reprints in Europe in recent months. Titles that were thought to be out of print were naturally seeing their prices increase on platforms like eBay, but some online retailers have had stock in recent times - very useful for filling out collections or picking up games that were originally missed.

As you can see in some of the tweets and images below, there are notable indicators that they're reprints from 2021 at least. One sign is a narrower game case similar to those in Japan, while subtle adjustments to packaging update product information. This is related to UK and EU in particular.

Having such a grand adventure come from a tiny cartridge truly felt as though the game itself was like a key into another world, much like the abstraction which occurs when getting lost in a novel.

The graphical limitations of that era forced devs to get creative with how they represented characters, landscapes, and iconography. Much like early PS1 survival horror titles, 16 bit RPGs forced players to fill in the blanks with their own imaginations.

There's a reason the sprite work is so revered from those games, and anything reminiscent of them is instantly praised. Just look how commended games like Golden Sun and Octopath Traveler were when they launched for simply capturing those same visual cues.

Yes the SNES-era JRPGs were clearly anime/manga inspired, but it also felt moreso like an abstract westernized high fantasy. You were forced to read dialog, with no mediocre dubbed voice acting to taint the characters. The characters, mind you who all less resembled b-tier Shonen Jump stereotypes and moreso...

Combine said artwork with methodical turn-based combat, a story delivered via text and sprite based visual cues, and you really had an experience which is vastly unique in a sense which can only be likened to reading great literature.

Also the music. Oh God, the music.






There really was something unique here. I have my qualms with older games and have no issue voicing them like a village drunk at times, but the JRPGs really often felt like prestigious works of art at the time, and to me, still absolutely hold that pedigree today.

Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes released a new trailer:



I am hopeful this will be an improvement on the first Fire Emblem Warriors game. The first game had great mechanics and good gameplay but the story was horrendous. Every mission was people from another game appearing and then fighting you, with the match finishing up with them saying sorry for the misunderstanding. If they can have a decent story, or even a great story, this could be one of the better Musou games. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires just released and sadly it is quite limited in terms of the emptiness of the open world, with battles apparently being very repetitive as well. I could get into it but it is selling for about $120 Australian dollars and frankly I'm not paying that much for a game that hides content behind DLC anyway.

Byleth being the villain is something I didn't see coming, I also wasn't expecting this to be another three routes.

I hope this doesn't suck out 700 hours from me like three houses did, I was only prepared for a maybe 40 hour playthough.

Wow, I thought my 400+ hours was a lot. 700+ is 💪 . It is good to have a game that can absorb that much time for only $70 though, very good value.

3. Metroid Prime: Hunters (That was a lot of fun on the handheld DS)

I liked Age of Calamity way more than the first Hyrule Warriors so I'm hoping this will be a similar turn for the Fire Emblem flavor of Warriors games. Also where is Petra don't let me down nintendo

In terms of things I enjoyed:
- Zelda BOTW - does have some aiming for the bow and arrow though but the gyro controls make that better than you'd expect.
- Mario 3D World - platforming genius
- Mario Kart - essential
- Streets Of Rage 4 - absolutely superb side-scrolling beat em up
- Hades - similar type of thing to Bastion etc
- SNES/NES classics via Switch Online
- Paper Mario: Origami King - tonnes of charm, not too difficult
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - cool little puzzle game
- Super Mario 3D Allstars (you'll need to hunt for a 2nd hand copy)
- Zelda: Links Awakening - remake of a gameboy classic, wonderfully charming, some performance issues
- Sega Ages versions of various mega drive classics
- Pokemon Sword/Shield - I had a blast with it. No idea if the newer ones are any good.
- Horizon Chase Turbo - a modernised Outrun, really fucking good
- Golf Story - A golf RPG. Better than it sounds.
- Astral Chain - Platinum are awesome
- Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle - think XCOM but with a tonne of charm

That lot should keep you going for a while.

@Anna Full Access these are some really fun games

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Yoshi's Crafted World, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 3, Cadence of Hyrule, Mario Party Superstars, Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Nintendo Switch Online has a lot of fun games too, especially now that they introduced N64 and Sega Genesis games to the library. Of those games for the NSO library, I'd highly recommend starting with Paper Mario if you've never played or finished it. Most charming game of all time easily

Yes, I loved Paper Mario on theb GC. That will be my next purchase, then Yoshis game. Thank you thank you. I've forgotten how charming Nintendo ganes were.
