Thread: Amazon's LOTR Series Name - "Rings of Power"
What the bloody fuck is this?

It's beyond parody at this point.

No beard?

Edit:
Zoom ....
Wait, she does. 🧔‍♂️

The only positive I can see here is that we are going to get tons of pretty good content tearing this thing to shreds.

The main thing that gets to me is that this is not an LOTR show at all. It's a fantasy show but somebody paid a ton of money to apply an LOTR logo.

I genuinely wonder how much extra money gets made between making a truly original fantasy show versus making some thing that has to squeeze itself into an LOTR skin?

Or in a situation like this is taking ownership of the brand seen as being more important for the long term plans?

I don't really care too much about the diversity stuff outside of just thinking it's hilarious how transparent they are. Like do they really think that having a diverse cast somehow shifts the ownership of LOTR away from white people? I wonder if maybe they do? Almost like they are seeing this thing called "Lord of the Rings" and thinking to themselves "hey this thing is super popular and culturally relevant but white people have had it to themselves for long enough so now they have to share"? In the end though the books are what they are. A shitty mini-series that most people will mindlessly consume isn't going to have the impact that LOTR books had decades ago.

It just feels kind of sad watching old stuff that was born out of exceptional creativity, and that was inspirational to so many, being carved up like this and then used just to make money in the most lazy ways imaginable. There's no love or respect or reverence in any of this.

What happened to all the PoCs between the Second and Third Age? Is that what the show is about? Yikes.

Maybe they'll make Sauron in a blond-haired blue-eyed charismatic figure in some snappy Hugo Boss styled uniform?
Imagine funding the most expensive tv show ever created ... and ruining it with woke agenda.

I'd laugh so hard if it bombs. Probably won't, but if ... would be hilarious and a 'real' moment.

That's the problem with content made by streaming platforms, where you can't vote for an individual property with your wallet; the only way this can 'bomb' is if people loudly cancel their subscriptions in protest. Continuing to pay the monthly fee and just not watching it is not going to make it 'bomb'.

Won't Amazon see how much clicks the tv show gets, though?

Imagine its the best show ever....LOL as if.

We already know they aren't trying to create a good show, its just about pushing diversity.

There was probably a great writer with a great idea, but they were a straight white male so they fired them and hired a black trans disable albino asian non binary fury instead.

Do they care, if people keep the $$$ flowing? If nobody watches a single thing on the service, but keeps their subscriptions, the company makes just as much money as if people are rabidly consuming every scrap of content on the service.

That's .... not how it works, lol. If this show has low number of clicks, Amazon should see and react and make other shows that receiver more clicks. More clicks => more people will stay interested in Prime.

still gonna give it a try. Gonna see how they balance character development. Pretty sure they're gonna go for a GOT style setup.

I never watched GOT.

Would they be able to make it today or would the cast be forced into "diversity"?

It's amazing how Hollywood changed it's attitude in 20 years with regards to it's viewership.

Back in 2001, Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema were desperate to please Tolkien fans and assure them with their fidelity in spirit to the Professor's work.

Now, Amazon and those in charge of this show are making brazen changes to Tolkien's lore to piss on the fans whom they label online trolls if the dare complain.

"Tolkien is for everyone."

Everyone can still watch it when you remain faithful to the racial makeup of Middle Earth.

I never watched GOT.

Would they be able to make it today or would the cast be forced into "diversity"?

No chance in hell they'd be able to do GoT the same way today. The vast majority of the cast is white and as we all know minorities won't watch shows without shoehorned representation. It's why GoT was cancelled after one season.

Added Tolkien scholar Mariana Rios Maldonado, "Who are these people that feel so threatened or disgusted by the idea that an elf is Black or Latino or Asian?"
1.) "Tolkien SCHOLAR". I truly hope she doesn't call herself that. The cringe would kill me.

2.) Nobody "feels threatened". You dumshits are arbitrarily changing popular fiction for your agenda and fans of the original don't like it. You cannot even accept criticism and need to lowly try to frame it as "feeling threatened", huh? Cowards.

A real Tolkien scholar would know that the Professor himself didn't care for Hollywood and would have objected very strongly to the blatant racial pandering Amazon is dong.

The only Tolkien scholars I trust are the late Christopher Tolkien and Tom Shippey, who was actually consulting the Amazon series before he quit out of frustration at the what the showrunners were doing.

doesn't it work the same way youtube does or in a similar fashion? Cause you don't get money on youtube for the clicks i think its dependent on the amount of subs you got so it must be the same thing with amazon i'm guessing.

I love how they just dont understand why people are not a fan of "race swapping". Its the same thing as why lots of people dont like whitewashing and white saviors. Yes, white boys wish they were some white Samurai.... BUT THEY WERE NOT! So when you put a honkey in Samurai tale it feels off. Its the same thing here. Its super simple. And when you go this route, you are actually saying "hey black and brown folk, your cultural lore is inferior to what the Europeans created"

Which is pretty interesting because we're constantly told white people don't have culture.

I'm not sure how it would work with a streaming service exactly but my assumption would be they will simply look at the number of subscribers and whether or not that grows when this series is released. They will probably have some kind of expected growth.

If you look at Netflix and Disney+ just now they are actively just filling the library with crap. They know it's throwaway rubbish but the point is to create enough content for people to stay subscribed. Once in a while they might accidentally pick a good director to make something on a budget but I'd say most of the time they just want something made as quickly as possible.

It's likely that the TV viewing habits of a lot of people are not "I loved LOTR as a kid and loved the movies so I am going to go out of my way to watch and go over every single aspect of this series" so that's something Amazon have in their favor.

This show is basically bait to lure in more subscribers. That's the angle.

I said this before about games and will say it again here. The main activity going on is "marketing". It's not people creating art or trying to make amazing content. It's creating things that can be effectively marketed and sold. On Playstation if you look at the trophy list of any games you have completed I think it's interesting to see how many people actually completed these games.

Look at Horizon Zero Dawn as an example.
By the time the tutorial stage ends they have lost 12% of players with 88% getting that trophy.
Around 40% of players are not even reaching the halfway stage of the game.
Only 54% completed the game.
Looks like only 25% ever complete the DLC quests.

So basically the 2nd half of the game could be filled with utter nonsense and nearly half of the people who bought the game wouldn't even know about it. Aloy could start identifying as a dude halfway through the game, have a relationship with a machine then be the first man to give birth to a half machine, half human, baby that saves the world and 50% of the people who bought the game would never know this.

The money is already collected.

The main thing from a sales point of view is making something that gets people talking and buying. They don't give a shit if it's good because that's not their focus.

This show will definitely, definitely, be absolute garbage. Probably a monumental amount of interference in the creative process from corporate interests. I would even wonder at this stage if they are deliberately trying to create all the "woke drama" around this as it draws attention. Even this ecosystem of critical youtube channels etc is a bit of a mutually beneficial thing. You keep moaning about our show and we all get subscribers!

I would love for this to crash so hard and be cancelled at season 2 or 3 but I suspect it's going to make Amazon a lot of money for a while before people wise up.
