Mario Kart World review in progress - not the game you thought it was
After a dozen hours with the biggest game on Nintendo Switch 2, GameCentral tries to evaluate the surprisingly controversial new Mario Kart game.metro.co.uk
I never thought of reading about a "controversial new Mario Kart game".
Wowser
it will be great i think, open world is most of the time empty anyway and it was quite clear from the footage there's not much to do or see. a gimmick. blame yourselves.
it's all about the racing and tracks which might be the best in the series.
It would be a missed opportunity. I mentioned in the Swtich thread but imagine a open world where you explore for new tracks, characters and mini games. Perhaps social spots as well you can just hang out with friends.
Yeah man imagine an Ubisoft like open world experience with locations/bases to conquer by winning races/challenges, a ton of exploration and side quests, you have to drive up difficult climbing paths to the top in a certain time to unlock parts of the map, you can go hunting animals and have to race them to get crafting materials for new upgrades, the story unlocks new abilities to traversal the world to reach new areas, you can build and expand your own base with parking spaces, a garage, tuning etc.
Wait that actually doesn't sound bad.
First impressions from IGN don't seem great. Anyone here playing it?
JFC, estimating almost 4 hours to download MKW?????
Ah, nice to see Nintendo has improved their wifi and dow load speeds!
So they did Forza Horizon open world without the actual Forza Horizon stuff?
Shit did Monolith Soft not check that considering they designed the world for Mario Kart World? Usually they are among industry best at world design, probably only behind FROM and Rockstar.
I mean I don't have gigabit. But I typically get 250 Mbps downstream roughly. This is waaaaaaaaay below that needless to say. Nice.
That seems an oversight for such a massive feature wow.Well not quite. Free roam is wholly optional it seems, it's not even on the mode menu. Horizon is really built on the free roam, here it's a secondary mode.
Thats a good joke there. It downloaded pretty fast for me but I have AT&T Fiber

People being surprised Nintendo is halfassing a Mario Kart game lol. I guess it is semi surprising given they've been working on it for 10 years, but it's Mario Kart. It's like Pokemon. They don't need to put any effort into it, it will sell tens of millions copies easily.

The "anti-consumer $80" grift coming from the chuds is tiresome. Embarrassing they're using IGN to make their point when it suits them.

I welcome all the pushback on the $80 dollar price point. It deserves extra scrutiny when they plant that price point flag. If you are going to jump 20 bucks within 3 years on the price of a game, you'd better damn well deliver on the value. They charged 70 for TOTK and they definitely justified that price with the game. Mario Kart feels like a 60 dollar game if you ignore free roam being a thing. So Free roam should be worth $20 dollars by that logic. I don't think its worth that much.
However, at the $50 bundle price I feel like I got more than my money's worth. This is basically a better version of 8 from the little I've played of it.
I'd love for nothing more than for the narrative to be "$80 for this game?!?" Because that maybe makes companies really think twice about the value proposition for an $80 game.
Why is it tiresome? This is the very first modern release at this price point and scrutiny for the value it offers absolutely should be considered.
