Thread: Star Wars Outlaws Thread |OT| Ubi shot first

New News!
The devs admit that so few players have interest in their game, that no one, not ONE single player has unlocked a mount from completing some mini-games.

They have so little self awareness they said this thinking it would add mystery and intrigue to their game.

That's actually sad. You would think at least one would achieve that but seems like the game just isn't interesting enough.

I just picked it up on sale and it's OK so far. I want to explore space more than anything and that's why I got it + the discount.

They should have given the main character a light saber and the millennium falcon to fly.

There are a lot of things that Ubisoft could have done with the Star Wars IP. Instead we get DEI slop and crappy code. -Many such cases.

I have been playing this game for a little over a week now. And while the gameplay seems OK and average to me, I must express how it's one of the best technological games released this generation. It's right up there with the likes of CP2077, Indy, Hellblade 2 and Alan Wake 2. They seem to get all the lighting for RT without including rasterization tricks. While the game isn't fully path-traced, I don't see where not using path-tracing has hindered this game's visuals. So I'll add Snowdrop to the list of next-gen graphics engines.

DF said it's very nice looking, and I'm always up for some visual spectacle. But the game itself just seems so boring.

I'm still waiting for the inevitable $20 price tag

Gamefly had this on sale for $27 so I jumped on it.

I'm only a few hours in but..so far this game seems pretty good actually? Maybe it gets a bit bland later on as I've only just gotten to the first space mission but there seems to be a decent amount of good stuff in here so far and they've done a decent job of it feeling like Star Wars shit in the Star Wars universe.

There seems to be a ton of stuff to do but it feels much closer to something like Witcher 3 in how you come across the activities. For example, I overheard a conversation about a crew that stashed their score from a job behind a water fall. I travel to the waterfall only to find a datapad explaining that one of the crew moved the goods to a nearby farm. Travel to the farm and the building is locked down and you need a different ability to break in. Its not exactly ground breaking but it at least tells a little story in the process. There seems to be an emphasis on listening to conversations in general as they occasionally will trigger quests like this.

Its also kind of nice that there are multiple ways to get to your objective in just about every mission I've played so far. Interiors have alternate pathways (usually vents so far) to find and a lot of the "combat" areas are pretty wide for you to explore. Your options are limited to either going loud or sneaking around with stealth, but its nice that they aren't just corridors.

Combat doesnt seem like its got much depth but its fairly satisfying as its got the sights and sounds of Star Wars. The little squib puffs of smoke when your shots hit is a nice detail.

Kay's character model is still inexplicably ugly though.

I'll definitely use a mod to change her looks.

I've dumped about 15 hours or so into the game now and I am surprised at how much I am enjoying this. Not sure if its because I went in with low expectations but I'm digging this quite a bit so far but its far from perfect. I think your view of this game would really depend on what you are expecting coming into it.

Weak points:
-Story - barely existent. Also why is every NPC a woman? Aside from the main bad guy, the leader of the Pykes, and the dude assembling the crew every other character you converse with is a woman.

-Gunplay (its not terrible but its not going to be considered a top tier experience either. Blasters feel pretty good to shoot but movement, cover, and combat design feels a bit underbaked.)

-The gang reputation system is pretty meh. You will constantly be betraying the gangs and then after one mission, they will be cool with you. Feels gamey and not very well fleshed out.

Strong points:
-How Star Wars-y this feels. there seems to have been a ton of money thrown at this project because all the environments look fantastic and match right up with the original Star Wars aesthetics (better than the damn movies for sure). Marketplaces filled with aliens and Stormtroopers harassing shop keepers, and the smoke and grime is all on point. Blaster fire and the little squib smoke effects where they land just all feels very authetic.

-Exploration. This is probably the main selling point of this game for me so far. Exploration is almost always rewarded. You will stumble across new quest lines, or bandit camps, Imperial outposts, caves, small villages, etc and they all have stuff to break into and collect. Some are much more elaborate than they initially seem. There is also a bit of Metroidvania level design to some of these as there are areas that are not accessible until you get a certain tool later on.

So yeah, unless this game shits the bed on the back half (I haven't even gotten to Tatooine yet) then i think this is surprisingly solid.

So when will this be on PS Plus ? Seeing how it's a UBI game and they have a ton of UBI games.

Already got Suicide Squad so just this now.

Updated impressions.

Got about 30 hours or so into this now and my early impressions are coming into sharper focus now. The TL; DR: Come for the Star Wars feel; stay for the exploration; tolerate the story.

-The story is garbage and practically non existent. Kay is actually not a terrible character except for:

other than that, shes not awful. Gather a crew for a heist but you do about 2 missions for each crew member, then you dont hear from them again.

-The overwhelming prevalence of women in this game is kind of crazy. You earn new abilities by completing in-game feats issued by trainers/experts; I havent encounter them all but I think Ive "unlocked" about 6 of them. All but 1 are women. I swear 75% of Stormtroopers in this game are women (they dont have unique character models, its just their voicework).

The hilariously shitty bounty hunter that is after you is a woman (they pitch her as one of the best in the galaxy and she's completely inept to the point where it seems like it might have been a joke character). At one point you are forced to team up with her due to circumstances and afterwards when she could absolutely take you in, she just lets you go? Her reasons being "I'm not in the mood". See for yourself

Seems like a prime opportunity for our protagonist to pull some clever Han Solo-esque shenanigans to ditch the bounty hunter and solidify her skills but nope. The badass bounty hunter just isn't feeling the vibes.

Also, why is this character's design so bad? Just a black chick in a coat is the best they could manage? Remember all those crazy bounty hunter designs from the original trilogy for characters that had no dialogue and you never saw ever again? That type of effort seems to be completely dead in the Disney Star Wars

Ok rant over. I'll probably post again once I complete the story.

Nature is healing.

I'm not going to celebrate people losing their jobs. These are just satellite studios just working on helping out rather than the ones driving the content. It's the idiots at the top coming up with the dumb ideas who ultimately need to get shitcanned. If they came up with decent concepts and not BS they wouldn't be in this situation of having to carry out layoffs.

It's not optimal, it's unfortunate. But necessary. Learning through pain, very important.

Because the force is female....

But ya there has been a massive push to put as many female characters in media as possible and to minimize straight white males to the point of extinction.
I am sure it's some BS about representation and that female gamers want to see themselves in all the NPCs etc... reality check males are still the vast majority of gamers. But big studios are agenda driven.
The game probably would have been relieved alot better with Han in it and it played out as a male power fantasy instead of MUH WAMANZ can do whatever a man can do but better .

Yeah, the main bad guy is a straight white male and the guy who is organizing the heist is a straight white male (who is definitely going to betray Kay at the end, its so fucking obvious its painful).

But its still just so overbearing that its funny. The people you learn skills from; the heavy gunner is a woman (named 'Rooster' which is also kind of funny), the gunslinger is a woman, the slicer is a woman, the mechanic is a woman. The bartender is the only dude in the bunch so far.

I beat the story over the weekend clocking in somewhere around about 45 hours. Here are my final thoughts:

The TL;DR is this game has lots of problems but overall I quite enjoyed my time with it. I got this for $27 from Gamefly and I feel like it was worth every penny. There are problems and some ideas that don't land but they weren't enough to sour my overall experience.

The exploration is worth it as the world is filled with little nooks and crannies to discover. If you're a Star Wars fan, this is probably the closest we will get to being able to wander around a fully realized Mos Eisley. Don't expect RDR2 or Witcher 3 levels of world depth and you'll be fine.

The story is a bit of a waste overall and the space sections could have used a lot more fleshing out. I feel like there should have been more big set piece moments to break up some of the open world stuff. The ending scratches that itch and really does feel like some pretty good fun old school Star Wars, but I wanted more of those moments throughout the game. Kay is actually not a bad character and I wouldn't mind seeing her again. She's not the best out there but Disney writers should be taking notes. She's not the smartest person in the room, she isn't good at everything, she gets screwed over several times throughout the story (its almost like she's an actual person!)

The crime syndicate system is ok to play around with but is just too gamey in practice and almost amounts to nothing by the end of the story
the ending is a big space battle with the empire and depending on who you have the highest standing with, they will send fighters to help you out. In my case, it was Crimson Dawn, which didnt make sense since they were portrayed as the uber secretive faction throughout the game. Definitely not the, let-us-help-you-murder-imperials type.

This feels like a solid first effort at bringing a somewhat unique take on open world design to the Star Wars universe and I would have been fairly excited to see a follow up effort to flesh out some of the ideas and expand on what worked(which seems will never happen).

If you're main concern is wokery shit here is what I noticed:

-Most of your "trainers" that provide skills are women
-There are a LOT of female Stormtroopers
-Vail, the big bad bounty hunter might fit this bill but she's so hilariously incompetent and never comes off as intimidating at all and almost seems like a joke character.

There might be more but that's all I can think of off hand. Its a real shame this got caught up in those discussions because I really think its not too bad all things considered.

The two problems are that one female gamers aren't paying the bills. Gamers want male power fantasy not STRANG WAMANZ.
Second problem is star wars hasn't been popular since like the early 2000s.
Last 2 movies really killed the franchise and I honestly don't know anyone aside from Disney tards who actually care about star wars.
The shows on + are bombing and the last few games have been overall meh.
Its like releasing a Pirates of Caribian game with no Sparrow in it and expecting it to sell 15 million copies.

Yeah, I get you. Its crazy how much damage Disney as done to the brand and I chalk this one up as collateral damage. To your point, if you put Han Solo as the star in this game I think it would have sold a lot better.

Since the character models are the same I'm almost wondering if this is a glitch. Its like the code that determines which voice lines are used is busted. Not that this would eliminate them completely but it just seems odd how prevalent it is right now.

I think it would have done slightly better but Star Wars is in the same place it was in the 90s where it was a battle between it and Star Trek on who was the bigger virgin.
Even worse because at least back then you had male geek culture to support it. Now they don't even have that and are left with weired soy boys who think they can score if they watch enough female witch Star wars.

Star wars is not really popular. Have any Star wars toys or merch flown off the shelves ? How many kids and teens want stars wars merch and toys? I bet there were 0 kids asking santa for Rey figures this Xmas.

Do you think this game would have sold better if it was Star Wars Outlaws: A Han Solo Story? Just make the main character Han, have Chewy as the side kick, fly the Falcon, play as Chewy some missions while visiting his home world, run into Lando etc?

It would have sold better but I doubt it would have actually been a better game in any measurable way.

Maybe the devs would have done a better job if they were told at the start "you are making a Han Solo game with no woke shit".

Something they can't do is to undo all of the negativity around Star Wars and UbiSlop which leads to skepticism and poor reputation and word of mouth.

Would be interesting to see how Jedi Fallen Order and Survivor performed against Outlaws.

I don't think that's the big problem of this game.
I mean, it would have been better if you were a cool dude, and not a semi ugly chick.

Target audience, etc.

Slightly but as I said in my posts Star Wars is close to a dead IP and might even be toxic.
Its not popular. No one talks about star wars. No one buys star wars merch. After the last 2 movies and Disney+ shows the IP has gone back to the dark days.

I don't think bringing back tired old character for another run would do it any favors. It's like the sequels, the universe is enourmous but all Disney can think of is more memberberries. There's no need for Han Solo game.

I will say that this game does a pretty admirable job of staying away from the memberberries.

There are characters from the film in here, but the mostly make sense when you encounter them and it doesnt overdo it too much. I can think of only 4 characters that I saw from the movies in here, two of which you can completely miss in your playthrough.

It's good. Playing as Solo, doing missions for Lando, sounds like a terrible idea. Like that trash prequel they did about him.

OTOH if the game was centered around collecting items for Han and Landos gay wedding and transitioning Lea into a man for a poly relationship it probably would have sold 30 million copies. Add in Chewbaca to get the furry audience and were talking GTA V level sales
