I will still pick this up most likely, but something about it feels really off compared to the original. I'm not even sure what exactly. Maybe the weaker tech did the game better.

I think the new camera may be what throws it off a bit

Better graphics but worse acting and directing than the original, it's too clean and big budget if that makes sense.

The original character acting was bizarre and off putting, really added to the game.

This game only has 2 outcomes I'd want.

For it to be amazing,

Or for it to be terrible trash.

If it's just okay or mediocre, that's the worse outcome.

The story and setting have always being amazing, the moment to moment gameplay not so much, I think with time, people forget it was largely walking/running down somewhat repetitive environments with very basic combat.

I'm looking forward to this but im under no illusion what it is exactly I'll be playing.

I can't wait to see how this is received. Just one week to go now.

I don't trust the company making the game at all. I'm waiting on this game expecting it to be the definition of average.

If I am wrong, fantastic. I'll be buying!

I think the tough part here is peoples memory vs reality. It's a great game but the moment to moment gameplay of the original was average (or below by modern standards). So Blooper can either reinvent, which people will hate, or stay faithful, which people will also hate.

Silent Hill fans can't exactly afford to be picky eaters right now. Gotta feel for Bloober at any rate, the vocal diehards are gonna hate a Silent Hill 2 remake almost on principle.

I do get the impression that they really want to make something people will love, at least.

Imma pick it up next week and give it a shot.

On a related note, how audacious is it of Konami to effectively be out of gaming for years only to come back and order remakes of the two most beloved entries in two of their most beloved franchises at the same damn time? Animals.

I agree.

People will analyze any changes with a fine tooth comb. Perhaps especially given who has made the game.

I do think they will need to make changes. The pace and the routes through the game will be very important if you have fairly large maps to explore.

I am open to changes myself. I'll always compare, can't help that. But I do think the changes need to happen.

I'd be happy for a reimagining myself too. Might as well take advantage of all the tech we had now, over back in the day. Just try to keep the iconic touchstones, areas as much as possible.

Exactly that!

I must try to not get excited. Things work so much better with me if I assume it's going to be terrible and find out the opposite is true 😂

Then we will both be disappointed together. Perhaps after, we will have new found appreciation of how our partners feel daily.

I am kinda excited.
Original was always too scary and too janky for me but I was a kid. Too young for such a serious game so I never finished it.
now I am ready... well, will be ready with ps5 pro. I am not playing it on ps5 fat boi

Don't forget this is a remake for "modern audiences".

I think that if Bloober makes the game into something so different, that it feels like a totally different game, the issue is, they are now judged not just by how good it is compared to the original, but also, how good is it as a stand alone game.

For example, FF7 remake for anyone that doesn't want spoilers, stop reading, isn't actually a remake, so its a bad remake, and I'd argue, only a good game due to many reasons.

SH2 remake should be judged similarly where if they veer off the original too much, although this will piss off die-hards, it will need to just be an amazing scary game called SH2 remake, that satisfies people looking for a good survival horror game.

You know too, not just woke elements/whatever are going to make it into this game. This game is gonna have a ton of hand-holding bc "modern audiences" fail at navigation and using their brains.

I was pleasantly surprised to see they actually made Eddie even fatter and dumber looking than before. Everything else….fehhhhhh. I survived Spider-Man 2, surely I can survive this.

Yup, also explains the shitty looking combat, hopefully it's better than it looks

I like navigation points as long as it's really subtle and unintrusive on the HUD (ideally a button press). It allows exploring, but cuts out looking where to go when you want to move on, which isn't really a fun act at all. Each to their own though, just a counter point.

Edit: Witcher 3 also had a good system where once you had found something by exploring, you could then navigate back to it. That's also great IMO.

Summary of Tech Radar Review

Remaking Silent Hill 2 is no small task, and while I didn't gel with all the changes Bloober Team made, there is still a lot to enjoy in this new edition. Carefully acted cutscenes from its small but talented cast do well to capture the ambiance of the original game, and the fresh coat of high-definition paint looks modern without sacrificing the eerie atmosphere. Unfortunately, shifting to a fluid third-person perspective means the classic combat feels clunky and torn between homage and modern visual standards. Questionable changes to a handful of scenes and key battles also detract from the subtlety wielded by the source material and introduce unnecessary padding that harms its pacing.

Summary of Gamespot Review

The original Silent Hill 2 is one of the most beloved, culturally significant, and overall best horror games ever made. It appeared to be the case that trying to recapture the magic of that game was to misjudge how impactful its time and place were, and how its limitations helped shape it for the better. Any studio advancing on such a project should've had a Sisyphean task ahead of them, forever chasing its essence like a moth with a hole in your net. However, by staying true to the original game in extremely important ways and taking calculated risks born from an understanding of the source material, all while being supported further by some of the game's original brain trust, Bloober Team has done what was reasonably considered near-impossible. The remake of Silent Hill 2 is a restless dream come true.

Basically 2 ends of the spectrum

Honestly sounds like if you played and loved the original, you'll be more tech radar, if this is a new game for you, or you thought SH2 was ok, Gamespot makes more sense

Curious how it runs on steam deck…I do have a PS5 too but it's just easier to play stuff on the go in general.

The original will always be special but I am so hyped for this. Reminds me of Dead Space Remake.

I'm surprised IGN gave it an 8, citing bloat as being a major factor. So much so it discourages replaying the game for the extra endings. Same problem the Medium had.

Bloober making a good game, let alone a remake of SH2, was not on my 2024 bingo card.

I dont think The Medium was a bad game. It felt a lot like ps2 era horror games, minus the lack of combat.

I love the original but I'm totally up for changes that mix things up and takes risks.

We get it dude, you're literally A ok with anything.

Look at my post history man, I call bullshit when I see it all the time.

Fuck it. I bought it. I watched the Residence of Evil review of the game and it sold me.

I was expecting release day reviews and talk of mediocrity so I am pleasantly surprised.
