Thread: What are you watching?

There was at least some progression to a plot taking place during some portions of this latest episode of The Boys.

I still can't take anything Starlight says or does seriously with that Frankenface. I got used to Milk's lack of beard and weight loss. I just want Homelander to go kill everyone.

The Great Escape (1963)

Watched this one once before ~15-20 years ago. Remembered it being kind of fun. Welp my memory is toast. It was not fun. It was a decent enough story with an all-star cast... but damn were there so many fucking fluff scenes. You could easily shave 1 hour off this one and lose NOTHING. Also much of the acting was wooden and flat. This made the characters seem absurd (like Charles Bronson!)

Overall highlight for me was Steve McQueen riding that bike. That was some solid stunt work.

In the end If I am going to watch a film about POWs I am going to pick Bridge over the River Kwai over the Great Escape more times than not.

I've been watching the newest season of House of the Dragon. So far I'm loving it. The last episode I especially loved. I have to read the book sometime

The other show I've been watching is The Boys. I thought the latest episode was good but I always found the show kind of mid. The only parts I always get entertained by is when Homelander shows up.

I dropped The Acolyte after Episode 3. That was some bullshit

I haven't watched any anime recently, but I'm waiting on that Nier Automata anime to be fully aired so I can binge watch all the episodes

I saw Longlegs in the theaters Thursday night. Loved the film but I'm a big Nicholas Cage fan. And the Nicholas Cage we get in this film is top tier. The OST was great and added to creepy atmosphere throughout.

It's been long time since I went to the theaters, glad I went to the theater for this movie. Helps that the crowd was quiet and not disruptive at all

Interstellar
Directed by Christopher Nolan

First time seeing this. What a trip dude. All these years I had heard people priase this movie but I always had kind of written off for whatever reason. Not my favorite type of movie or genre but Interstellar delivered. I like Inception better, but honestly this might be Nolan's Magnum Opus

Loved this one the first time too! I even loved it the second time since I had forgotten the details and only remembered the broad strokes. Such a fun ride!

Also if you liked Inception, you should (if you havent already) check out the animated film it is based/ripped off, Paprika from Satoshi Kon. It is a real trip.

Reviews of 'The Acolyte' has replaced TV for me lol.
Just watched 'The Maltese Falcon' on Blu-Ray. Pretty good! I called it in the first 5 minutes, but it was still fun to watch Bogart cook.

The Blu-Ray edition has the full "feature" which includes a newsreel, cartoon, short musical number, and then the movie as it would have been presented at the theater at the time.

Really cool to see, and it's shocking how the attention spans of audiences have changed — I think this every time I watch old movies.

If people weren't outright smarter back then, they sure were treated as if they were.

Is this The Boys?

I finished up season 3 of The Bear. I've seen a few people be pretty down on it and while it didn't hit the highs of season 2 I still enjoyed it.

I binged through S3 so fast I was just bummed when I was out of content. I loved S3 giving you good backstory on Carmie

The amount of angst this show can create in you just watching it is pretty crazy

That warning isn't on my server version! lol.

I just finished Wednesday season 1. The casting, direction, set dressing everything was spot on, absolutely loved it. The overall mystery was a little weak however, as it didn't have my dying to find out what would happen next. The last episode packed a lot in, that may have been better spread out across earlier episodes. Overall though a really solid first season I'm happy to give 4 out of 5 stars.

The Boys finale was fucking insane. I know the consensus here is that it's woke and whatever but I just came off the episode and season 5 can't come any sooner holy shit.

It was ok. The Butcher reveal was stupid, and I'm getting tried of watching Homelander tear up and break down.

Finally watched Dune Part 2, UHD on my OLED.

s-l1600.jpg

Not as totally convincing as the first part, but still very good movie.

+ love the cinematography
+ effective way of introducing characters
+ epic and beautiful on an OLED, looking incredible
+ the sound.... wow the amount of bass, the impact, seriously well done
+ good character development
+ atmosphere was top notch
+ strong action scenes for the most part
+ great acting by the mother, super creepy and convincing

- some parts of the fights looked bad (close combat 1on1)
- not a fan of Zendayas acting here
- didn't feel as perfect as the first one

Now waiting for the next part, sigh.

All your pluses. I thought Jessica was insufferable in the first movie but they did a really good job with her in Part Two.

Zendaya was bad casting I think, but also they're making Chani a watermelon-in-bio tween brat. The witch who banged Feyd was 😘👌

I'm still holding out for an IMAX edition. I'll probably grab a copy when the next movie comes out. Great film and fun watch despite the story issues.

The amount of time this was on screen is much less than the amount of time I've spent looking at it. I will admit that.

This has been a recent issue I had with Hollywood in regards to Movies and Shows

They go out of their way now to show full on shots of dicks but none of female tits and vag. If they do, they make sure she's not attractive at all. If she's attractive, they put a burkha on her. Even in The House of Dragon, they have been doing that. When they go to the brothel and you see the prostitute sucking on that fake penis, shes fully clothed. When they go to see that guy with the eyepatch (forgot his name), the girl he's with is fugly as hell and you can see full nudity of her. And Eye Patch guy? Full shot of his wang, that is not secs but minutes in view Sometimes I think that Hollywood does if they can't turn Straight men gay, they will try to change what Straight men find attractive in women. Like every pretty face women with a slim/fit body is covered up, while the fuglys who are also fatties are the ones most of the time in skimpy outfits or full blown nudity. It's been really noticeable and it really annoys me. I haven't liked these recent episodes of House of the Dragon since it just the dialogue is so bad compared to last season. And the last episode feminazi leanings really made me roll my eyes. I heard one of the showrunners left after season one and I'm guessing he was the one keeping the ship afloat

As for shows I'm actually watching. I just got to Season 3 of The Sopranos. I've been loving the show and how unapologetic it is when it comes to unlikable characters, violence and sexual content with full blown nudity of attractive females. I wish HBO and other companies that aim their entertainment at adults would go back to this type of storytelling

I just got to Episode 2 of Season 3 BTW

You know, I miss Nikita. There were two versions of the show. La Femme Nikita and a reboot just called Nikita. I was a fan of both shows, but I want to focus specifically on the reboot. It had all the things that these people want. A strong, powerful, non-white female lead character fighting against an organization run by an evil, old white man. But you know what? Maggie Q was what a lot of people would consider hot (not really my type personally). The show was never above focusing on her sexuality. She used it to her advantage at times. Dudes were sexualized on the show too, THAT'S equality. Also, the show was full of badass man who were very much on her level, and quite a few of them where white dudes. Some of them were guys on her side, and some of them were enemies. The show never showed any ill will towards men, there were a few on the show that Nikita clearly loved and respected, and often relied on to help her. The show had hot babes and was not ashamed of it, Nikita's sidekick in particular - Lyndsy Fonseca.

I don't recall the show ever feeling like it had any sort of political agenda. It actually portrayed politics realistically, showing both the good and the bad aspects of it. One thing I loved about both Nikita shows was that they both revolved around a secret organization doing dirty deeds for the United States (including things like assassinations) and dealing with problematic international issues as well. They were above the law, corrupt, and eventually became more concerned about power than doing what's right. They often made sure that the public would be sold a "narrative" rather than the truth. Lots of stuff there with ties to the real world that I'm sure most of you can pick up on.

That show had a lot of "woke" checkmarks like strong women, diverse cast members, etc., yet avoided all of the stuff that we generally HATE about wokeness. It was a far better show than it had any right to be. There was a time when the CW actually had decent shows, at least by free network TV standards.

To those who are about to die - Biggest actor old Anthony Hopkins.....great fucking show

Setting is in Rome based on gambling and chariot races with mostly everything in between being killing and fucking.

Fucking/nudity in almost every scene, it's the kind of show we need in light of everything sucking

I just finished Those About to Die. I would describe it as diet Spartacus, but it shows different aspects of the ancient entertainment industry. I enjoyed how almost every plan made by any character backfires instantly and tremendously.
The physical sets are incredible and the amount of tits is ridiculous.
Sometimes it's perfectly accurate, and sometimes Roland Emmerich sends a gigantic ash cloud from Vesuvius to gobble up Rome. Some of the acting is catastrophic and the CGI ranges from really good to "the show premieres in 6 hours and we're missing a scene", but overall it's a good watch.

You can make a drinking game out of how many times the Emperor says "very well" in the last two episodes... Also I know Emmerich is gay but the women in this show are gorgeous and often nude, so he's clearly based beyond belief.

Finally got to do a second viewing of The Boy and the Heron. I picked up the 4k Blu Ray at launch and had been waiting for a day to watch.

First, holy shit balls is it absolutely gorgeous at 4k! Like, I kept getting distracted looking at scenery. Beautiful!

Story is still just as opaquely powerful as when I saw it in theaters. You really felt something real...despite barely having a clue what is happening. Honestly I feel like this film needs an accompanying Ted talk to understand. So many levels with historical and allegorical references.

All of this colorful menagerie of imagination is underpinned by a wonderful Joe Hisashi score. It just hits and grounds when the main theme percolates out.

This is easily the deepest and most visceral of the Miyazaki Ghibli's. Is it my favorite? ... No. But its my #3 Ghibli (Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke proceed it ). Overall incredibly powerful and visually memorizing. Highly recommended!

Watch the movie they are based on.

I remember it being very good.
Yeah, it was. Luc Besson has been involved with some fun movies. I liked District 13 too, fun movie

I think they did an American remake of the Nikita movie but changed the name to something else didn't they?

Apparently there's one with Bridget Fonda but I haven't seen it.

San Andreas
Directed by Brad Peyton

This was a decent action film. First time seeing it, but all the characters were good. It's not that the characters are amazing or anything, but I liked the cast and thought they worked well together. A ton of chaos, damage, injuries, suffering, and deaths in this movie. Special effects were alright. Nice movie to have on that will grab your attention and pull you in periodically, was glad to have selected it

The daughter and the two brothers were my favorite dynamic within the film. I loved those three characters and how they managed to fight against the odds as a team

Overall score for what it is would be around 7.7/10

I liked this movie a lot more than The Meg

Twisters (2024)

dC5qcGc

Took my wife to see this one in the theaters. The original Twister is her favorite movie and she always watching Tornado documentaries. So there was no way we weren't gonna go see it. Overall it wasnt too bad honestly. It was a meh modern Hollywood production with too much CG, (mostly) weak dialogue and 2 dimensional characters. But there were a few good scenes and lots of action/suspense. The main actress reminded me of the girl in Fifty Shades.... kinda plain, almost pretty, but not really. However Glen Powell was great and carried most of the movie. That guy plays a solid cocky son of a bitch.
