Thread: David Tennant and Catherine Tate return to Doctor Who
Oh wow so that unbelievably grating redhead they forced on us in the American version of The Office is from Dr Who?

I never would have known she came from something. I'd have assumed she was some secret military project used to torture terrorists and to get them to talk.

Yeah, I've listened to Mcgann's audio adventures. A lot of them are awesome and WAY better than many episodes of the New Series.

But my favorite media of the 8th Doctor are Doctor Who Magazine comic strips starring him. Just incredible stories and really the 8th at his best.

I had to check you had the right person, because I couldn't force myself into that tripe.

Turns out you're right, Catherine Tate was in US Office. Wouldn't have ever guessed that.

She was a popular name here in the UK for a while between Doctor Who and a sketch show she did. I wasn't much of a fan of her in Who, but she had a character called Nan that I'm pretty sure she owes my family royalties for:

If I had to choose between watching all of her work or just hearing the same bagpipe music on a loop for the equal runtime of all of her work, I'd choose the bagpipes.

I liked the new doctor in Sex Education. And I don't have a problem with SE being queer and all that stuff. It's still super entertaining, and the show was made ground up with this in mind.

It's irking me, though, that they trying to shoehorn this woke and queer shenanigans into each and every franchise that was clearly not throughout its history.

It's just going to get worse. They got Russell T. Davies, the guy who brought back Doctor Who in 2005, to be the showrunner again. Davies is gay and inserted small queer references during his run (the biggest being Jack Harness).

And if fans think Davies will restore the show back to it's roots, they're in for disappointment. Rumors abound that Davies is pretty pissed at how the fandom treated previous showrunner Chris Chibnall (whom he's pretty good friends with) and intends to keep the Timeless Child retcon that was so unpopular among fans. It's also no surprise he cast Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor (though he's never discussed it publicly, it's suspected that Gatwa is gay in real life).

Aren't these people not in any way accountable for how they handle these franchises, or how many people watch it?

He might be, but why should we care.

If he plays the role well, all is fine, imo.
It just doesn't bode well, knowing him from SE, and I somehow feel his artistic range isn't that wide.

But we will see.

They're accountable to the BBC, and the Beeb in recent years has become a complete woke shithole. Especially after Brexit pushed them to the edge of sanity and started hating on their very audience for not knowing what's good for them. It's a big reason why there's a push within the British parliament to junk the UK's tv licence fee and get rid of the Beeb's funding.

What happened to Doctor Who is entirely the BBC's fault. They wanted their most popular show to go woke, they got it.

Years ago I would have given Gatwa a chance, but not now. Not after everything the woke leadership in the BBC did to undermine the show and it's legacy in the name of virtual signaling.

Let's not forget that the new companion is a troon.

So the 60th anniversary trailer for the specials just came out.

And honestly? I couldn't really give a shit. I mean before I would have been intrigued by David Tennant and Catherine Tate reuniting as the 10th and Donna. But after everything the show has gone through under Chris Chibnall with the Timeless Child horseshite, the show is dead to me. It doesn't help that a returning Russell T. Davies running the show looks to be doubling down on the woke. The troon companion certainly doesn't help.

Fuck you BBC. Doctor Who was your flagship show and you ruined it with all your SJW pandering.

I have made it this far without ever watching any Dr Who... I plan to go to my death bed with that stat.

A girl I dated in HS (in the 90's) had a dad who use to talk about Dr Who and how much he loved it. They gut was a complete POS tool and that pretty much doomed the IP for me.... but then a decade ago it became popular with the Big Bang "nerdy" trendy's and its fate was sealed.

Eh, there's episodes I like but I fell off the show a while back. The show will regularly pull random shit out of its arse to resolve situations. They also kept bringing creatures back over and over, running them into the ground. That Blink episode was cool and a fun concept and then they had the Weeping Angels pop up a bunch of other times which really diminished the novelty.

Meh. Not going to get hyped, unless they retcon out the Timeless Child bullshit and much of Chris Chibnall's run. Fucking BBC ruined this show with wokeness and bringing back the most popular NuDoctor with his best companion is not going to guarantee a return to form.

Tennant looks fucking horrible lmfao

Bringing him back won't bring me back, show died to me around the matt smith era
He does. He's really starting to look his age (52).

I've seen an episode or two bc of a friend of mine, it was just ok.

There's some really excellent episodes like Heaven Sent but it's a lot to ask of someone to watch the entirety of his run just to have all the pieces in place for one fantastic episode.

I would definitely say Capaldi is very underrated in this new-Who. Carries episodes single handedly during his tenure. Though it's all fairly short lived.

There's a lull with his first series, but it really picks up in the second. I won't twist your arm, but if you're ever looking for some Who to watch that isn't completely ruined by Chinballs then Capaldi isn't the worst of what the show offers.

I found Peter Capaldi's run to be very mixed. A majority of his stories are kind of meh, with some outright stinkers (Kill the Moon, Beyond the Forest of Night) and some diamonds in the rough (the aforementioned Heaven Sent, Flatline). Mind you, I didn't watch his last season (series 10) because I was getting kind of tired of Steven Moffat's writing and my general lack of interest the show at the time.

What I cant deny though, is what a brilliant fucking actor Peter Capaldi is. The man is incredible and I agree he does carry the episodes even when the writing is not up to snuff. He deserved better writing than what Moffat and his team gave him.

I'll watch the specials but have no desire to watch the new Doctor after Tennant regenerates again.

Doctor/Donna was my absolute fave pairing of NuWho and I've watched their run multiple times.

Stopped watching Who a while ago because of how horrifically bad it is. (Did try to give Jodie a fair chance, but my interest was waning heavily in Capaldi's run.)

Will probably watch anniversary special because it's Doctor/Donna. Will then probably be disappointed by how horrible it is, and vow never again.

It's a shame that BBC burned their tentpole franchise so bad with insanely awful writing, retcons and Timeless Child nonsense so bad that nobody is willing to give Ncuti Gatwa a chance.

He could be the best Who ever and people still won't tune is because the damage has already been done. Giving the show to Chris Chibnall was easily the worst thing that ever happened, the man single-handedly killed 60 years worth of IP.

If you're ever in the mood for a deep dive on all the mistakes made in the Chinballs era, Jay Exci has an excellent albeit long (5 hours!) examination/critique of his time as showrunner.

Eh... I think the potential problem is Russell T. Davies to be honest. While the man deserves credit for bringing back the show after a long hiatus, I don't think bringing him back as showrunner will solve all the problems that have plagued it. For starters, Davies is just as woke as Chibnall is (they're good friends) given his track record, so there's a chance he may double down on all the controversial retcons Chibnall introduced. And I think Davies wholly embraces the insane woke culture that has plagued the BBC in recent years, so expect a lot of potshots at Brexit and Trump.

Yes, very true. Though I think Mr. Davies is a much more capable story teller, better understands the character of the Doctor, or at least had the writing team around him to not get bogged down in hand-wringing social messaging. As long as we don't get "Spiders in the UK" level messes ever again then I think the series will be on a better track.

Or maybe Ncuti will be tasked with leading an anti-racist and anti-fascist crusade amongst the stars and teaching everyone the value of CRT.

Russel T. Davis was always very left leaning and has gone full woke since he last wrote Who. He's a vocal remaining, cancel culture advocate and outspoken critic of J. K. Rowling. He's if anything more unhinged than Chibnall.

He specifically cast a gay black African immigrant to play one of the most quintessentially British characters in television history and made Donna's son a black tranny because his love of woke outweighs his love of Doctor Who.

It's going to be more far left, anti normal, anti English, deliberate vandalism of British culture and history, and despite my love for Tennant's Doctor and Donna, the show can go fuck itself.

I'm not going to watch a show made by people that hate me just because it's wearing the skin-suit of a show I used to love.

I remember reading a story where he got into a heated argument with a woman at a party because she objected to all the LGBTQ themed content on tv at the time. Davies was producing Queer as Folk during this period and got very cross (almost into a fight even), so it shows you his mindset.

I give Davies some credit though, he wrote better seasonal arcs for Doctor Who than Moffat, and wrote some brilliant episodes (Midnight for me is one of top Who stories of all time). But he did write some stinkers and more often than not succumbed to fan demand (Rose returning during Season 4 was an obvious olive branch). And I can't stand how smug and self congratulatory he is when it comes to his writing. You think he could afford some humility at least.

Yeah, I'm more wary with him returning as showrunner rather than assured. Like you said, he's more likely to double down on the woke stuff Chibnall blatantly shoved into his run.

Who Bros, it's over 😭😭

Neither of us watched it, but the missus has been angrily ranting about it since last night due to her insistence on still using X and having hate watched clips of all the major scenes now.

The whole thing is one long pro trans struggle session that revolves around how special Donna's son is (who we are calling Rod, because we'll be buggered if we're going to call him Rose), culminating in him saving the day because of his special Tranniness overcoming an alien device that only effects people of binary gender. I shit you not.

It's way, way more preachy even than the Chibnal era, to the point I'm honestly wondering if the whole episode wasn't written in response to J K Rowling, who RTD constantly slags off on X.

WOW. So RTD took it to eleven? My God... they really want to kill this show don't they?

And I'm not surprised Davies hates JK Rowling. How dare a mere woman stand up for herself and her fellow females against the MEN who know better?

It's so depressing that all these classic properties are merely being used as a vehicle for whatever flavour of the day political issue is currently occurring.

Even the BBC Culture review states that this special feels preachy to a degree that it's just being used as a way to deliver "The Message"

You have to wonder if this is all one big scam with people writing absolute dross and cashing a cheque.

It's worse than you think. These idiots actually BELIEVE in this shite they espouse. Like @Stilton Disco said, Russel T. Davies is a true n' blue woke believer and no doubt this episode was meant to take shots at TERFs like JK Rowling. Add to the fact that Doctor Who now is currently streaming on Disney+ and you can be pretty sure they got notes on how to woke it up even further.

So I watched this last night. It was actually a really good episode inspite of itself. The woke messaging is dialled up to 11 and the cast is diverse at every opportunity and that is the biggest flaw of the episode, by far.

All that been said having David and Catherine back together was great and I enjoyed The Meep (tm). A great episode with a lot of flaws. RTD obviously has a grudge to bear against people and his delivery method is hia flagship show, and that is though a real shame.

Still I did have a great time with eye rolls every 10 minutes lol; 4/5.

Disgusting as expected.

Taking public money for BBC and intentionally creating a show like this one that goes directly against the sane views of a major part of the viewership and base... it just makes RTD a gross man, really I regret that he was ever given a role in Doctor Who after seeing this prolonged commercial for transing children. On a children's program, no less.

Welp. Paul Chato has his say, a somewhat solid hour of television with a bunch of progressive horseshite shoved in. Loved his analogy about the Doctor getting lectured on using the proper pronouns when addressing the Meep, despite the fact the Meep is the big bad of the episode. It's just like real life when the troons that insist you address them by their preferred pronouns turn out to be the biggest douchebags.

I just watched it, it was a more fun affair than I imagined but it completely manages to shit itself by the end of the episode with a completely disconnected and jarring resolution to both the episode and Doctor Donna's meta crisis.

Ludicrous, hilarious, fucking lousy. I cannot believe RTD actually thought that was a good way to resolve a 15 year plot issue.

The crowbarring of pronouns, gender identity and transgenderism continues to be at odds with reality and it's creating unrealistic scenarios for television (even in a fun Sci fi show)

I honestly am stunned. Watch it and see just how bad it gets by the end of the episode, flabbergasted doesn't even cover it.
