I'd like to say I'm excited, but the fact that Kentaro Miura left no rough drafts is very concerning. Hopefully this Kouji Mori knows what he's doing and finishes the story the way Miura intended it to.

That's my problem. We don't KNOW if he really knows the story Miura would tell. For all we know it's lipservice and the studio is being pressured into continuing bc of the property's popularity.

Great news!! It's not an easy decision to take on such a huge challenge and responsibility. I wonder what the frequency of chapter releases will be, and how far the team will be able to keep the story progressing.

I legitimately feel happy enough to cry. It's a shame Miura isn't going to finish it himself, but I can have a little hope.

He may not have left rough drafts, but it sounds like Miura was bouncing ideas off a ton of people during his long period of writer's block. They have at least some idea of his thought process and general direction to the story.

I wonder if he really was overwhelmed by it all and that is what led to the long hiatuses? That and maybe he changed his mind on some things (e.g. the whole Idea of Evil thing) and couldn't make his new vision all fall into place.

Made the mistake of buying and reading only vol1 on a trip last month. Need some more Beserk in my life. Not sure if I'm going to read it first or watch the anime.

Unreal, but great news. They're very open about it, so even if it sucks, you can say 'alright, that's the non-Miura part'.

I fully support this, because I can't imagine any author want his story to end unfinished.

Looking forward to this, and time to catch up. I still haven't read like 10 chapters or so.

Here's the correct order of enjoying BERSERK to the max:

1.) Watch the old anime, find out it suddenly ends.
2.) So you go to the manga and realize: damn, the anime skipped A TON of content! Nice!
3.) Waiting for new chapters is excruciating, so you watch the 2016-anime. Bad animation, but you get to see stuff animated that you never saw animated before.
4.) Play the PC/PS4-game 'Berserk and the Band of Hawks' and realize that it's the best Musou-game, because of how perfectly it encapsulates Guts's power.
5.) Join the rest of us, pretending to have a life, while actually we're just waiting desperately for the next chapter of the manga.

Enjoy!

I liked the new chapters. Whether they end the series on a note that Miura would have liked remains to be seen.

I've seen people online comment that they hope it doesn't end up like Game of Thrones, which is bullshit. By all accounts Weiss and Benioff followed George RR Martin's notes on how to end the series, so the ending of GoT will be Martin's ending for A Song of Ice and Fire. And given the extreme backlash it's obvious Martin has lost all desire to write the final 2 books.

Starting to (re)read this as my 'before bed' routine. I started reading last year but stopped when I decided I really liked it but only had purchased two of the deluxe editions. Since then I have purchased 8 more and felt it was time to dive back in. I love how simple the stories are while still having an overarching plot with depth. Guts kills demons....and with authority! I will have to say the deluxe editions are very well made and I love the built in material bookmark. it makes the bite sized consumption I am doing a great experience.

I'm beginning to think that Miura suffered from severe writer's block. I'd always heard that the story was 3-4 arcs away from the ending, but it sounds like it was really about 2 away. And Miura kind of had a GoT TV ending moment with the Idea of Evil - it didn't necessarily get backlash, but he clearly wasn't happy with it.

I agree and think he may have been suffering from the ol' block. You don't write and illustrate series like Berserk without experiencing some sort of creative drought.

The other side of it is that the Band of the Hawk/Falcon and the Guts/Casca/Griffith dynamic were based on friendships Miura had in college. Araki had a similar emotional investment in the Jojo Part 5 cast that caused him to drop Fugo entirely after Trish was saved instead of having him come back to fight his friends (at least in the manga) and get killed. But Jojo is much less focused and planned than Berserk (and Fugo was less important than Griffith) so Araki could make a sudden change like that without a lot of impact on the overall story.

I felt that way once the Golden Age ended. Because after book 13 it starts to fall into a typical manga about power-levels and constantly growing stakes. It should have been like the 90s anime where Griffith is the king and Guts becomes the Black Swordsman to avenge his comrades and the story should have ended by book 20 at most. Instead we got, so far ,20 more books of very little happening aside from cool battles and nice artwork.

I am just about done with the Deluxe volume 3. Loving the shit out of the "golden age" story arc so far. Have enjoyed watching Griffith play the 'game of thrones' while Guts(somewhat) matures. I am anticipating learning about how Griffith becomes one of the God Hand and how Guts gets his mark.

The post-Golden Age arcs are all about exploring the impact of the Eclipse on Guts and how he softens as he builds his own band. A lot of Berserk is contrasting Guts and Griffith.

Both can be utterly ruthless and also self-sacrificing, but Guts is doing it for the sake of his friends while Griffith does it for his ambition and dream. Guts had convinced himself that he could do anything to exact revenge for the Band of the Hawk, but comes to realize that sacrificing himself will just hurt his new friends. People who get to know him like him - he isn't immediately charismatic (in fact, he is repellant, at least at first), but he is a genuine friend.

Griffith convinced himself that anyone could be sacrificed for his dream because his dream was bigger than anyone, including himself. But that was just a delusion - his saving Casca and his prostituting himself after the death of one of his child soldiers showed that. However, he saw this as interfering with his charisma and his dream, so he hid it (hence his personal killing of Gennon). The only person who broke through that was Guts because Guts was never fully absorbed into his dream, just a passenger along for the ride with people he liked. Unfortunately, Griffith's torture after Guts left broke him and he took the easy path that removed the humanity holding his full ambition back.

Which is why Falconia is probably some sort of sacrifice to enable him to ascend beyond the God Hand - he doesn't have any kind of anchor left, except maybe through the Moonlight Child.

I think to build on both characters the stakes have to grow - Griffith is something like a god, so obviously his stakes have to be high. And as Guts strives to fight him and gains more magical tools that bring him closer to being able to fight a god what he does has to get wilder. The only thing I worry about is how the secondary characters will handle it. The New Band of the Hawk is obviously powerful because it is all apostles, but Guts' band is rather weak in comparison. Schierke is powerful and Rickert is a fucking genius who is probably learning crazy combinations of magic and science, but Casca (while an excellent fighter) is out-of-practice and inexperienced with supernatural threats and Serpico, Farnese, and Isidro are even weaker. Which makes me think that, as the stakes grow, Guts will make the opposite decision Griffith did during the Eclipse during whatever the Falconia sacrifice is. I don't think Guts will survive, but he will give his humanity and life for others, and not just those he cares about.

IN the middle of Deluxe Volume 6 and still enjoying the mayhem of the Black Swordsman. The ebb and flow of the story has been a bit weird though. Went from Demon slaying, to the origin saga, to the Eclipse and then back to before the start of the series? Kind of weird that pretty much all of Volume 5 and so far in 6 the God Hand and Griffith are not more involved.

I am at the part where the Holy Chain Knights (or some such) and Guts takes the Lady hostage. Again its very enjoyable. Even when the story feels like it goes in circles at times.

Still trekking along a chapter or two a night. I am now in the middle of Deluxe Volume 9. Its taken an interesting turn the last book. Guts is now adventuring with a "fellowship" of sorts and fighting trolls. Still entertaining and having a good time. Since Ill be getting into Deluxe Volume 10 just after Christmas I will have to order 11 and 12. That should take me through volume 36. When Deluxe Volume 13 comes out in the spring I will be almost current.

Have they said how much longer they are going to go under Kouiji Mori?

And on an (almost) unrelated note, have yall read Vagabond? I am tempted to start reading it when I run out of Berserk.

Vagabond is fantastic with some of the most incredible artwork you'll find in manga. It's a pretty quick read too as it's not terribly wordy. I still can't find a reasonably priced copy of volume 12 though. Been on the lookout for months now.

It looks great on the shelf too.

Of course but I wouldn't recommend that to be honest. Manga is great but Inoue has no intention in continuing it. So I guess Berserk alone is enough, let alone having two 😁

lol Well as much as I appreciate the warning. I just ordered all 12 English editions of Vagabond. Hoping it doesn't get left on a cliff hanger. As long as the story as least pauses for breath I will be content. And if they ever do more, awesome... if not oh well.

This should keep me going through most of 2023. Then I will just do a loop and reread all my manga again. That will take me through the next year.
