Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Special Edition
It's not up yet, I wonder how many copies they'll make?

"A Special Edition of the game will also be available exclusively via the My Nintendo Store, including package artwork from Masatsugu Saito, a full-color 250-page+ hardcover art book and a steel case. Stay tuned for more updates on availability."

250+ pages? Damn, if only they made that for more games. I haven't played much of the xenoblade series, not since I rage quit during the ending levels of Xenoblade 1. For the fans though, that would be a cool package.

That thing seems to be going through some kind of production hell. Either that or they're waiting as long as possible to announce it so they can make as many as possible.

I don't think I've actually played any of the mario sports titles. I've seen some of them on youtube videos but have never had any myself. I think if I was going to get one I'd get a golf one.

This gen's golf game is trash. Much better sticking with the N64 game on the service.

Tennis is excellent in terms of gameplay but light on content and the online is long dead. N64 version is a great game too though.
Strikers' demo is great, looks like Next Level have hit another home run, so well worth picking up at launch.

I'm still waiting for the Fire Emblem musou game to come out later this month. I'll play that and then focus on the future titles like the Strikers. I am a bit hesitant getting games at launch, I'll probably get Strikers for m Birthday later in the year if it is a good entry though.

We'll see how it goes and how they support Strikers, but online was dead in under a year with Tennis, golf lasted 6 months. A lot of the draw of this game is going to be the online, so if that interests you, it might be better to jump in sooner rather than later. Having said that, if you wait six months, you might get a copy at around half price. Sports games don't tend to hold their value like other Switch 1st party games.

N64 Mario Golf is one of the best Mario sports title to this day imo

Playstation had their State of Play, Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase is June 12th, now we wait for the Nintendo Direct. The way I see it, you have to provide an update in June because everybody's wondering what's next?

They show some games and promo the big titles like Live A Live & Xenoblade Chronicles 3 coming out next month in late July, that's expected this month at some point I'd say

Keeping my fingers crossed for Mario Party Superstars DLC. I'll be over the moon if we receive news of new boards for Mario Party

What I'm expecting from a possible one hour June direct:

Xenoblade Chronicles 3/Setting/Story/Party/Mechanics/Arts/Traversal via airship, skell or
oroboros having flight abilites, ground mode, ect.
Live A Live
Gamecube and Nintendo Gameboy for Nintendo Online
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope
Splatoon 3
Fire Emblem Three Hopes gameplay/story, final trailer
Bayonetta 3 - Gameplay, mechanics, story, and a probable delay
Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp eventual release date
Breath of the Wild 2 Full Trailer/Name/Release

Possible:
Astral Chain 2, since Nintendo got the IP and did a bait and switch with Bayonetta 3
Fire Emblem game remake
GrimGrimoire OnceMore International Release Date
Possible new Animal Crossing
Possible new Mario Mainline or Super Mario Odyssey 2
Metroid Prime 4 - Teaser/Nothing

Unlikely:
Dragon Quest XII Flames of Fate Reveal
Persona 6 Reveal
Silksong - Shadow Release/Nothing
Mario Kart 9 due to the very recent 8 DLC
New Fire Emblem Mainline reveal due to impending Three Hopes release

I'd be happy with some more Fire Emblem releases, BOTW2 news/dates and some more Dragon Quest stuff. But I will hope for more on your list to happen as well, I want to play Mario Kart again but I just can't justify buying the game again after getting it and the DLC for the Wii U.

You think they will roll out GameCube and Gameboy? I'm thinking we will get Gameboy soon and then GC maybe sometime in the distant future with how slowly they roll stuff out.

Solid list overall if all of that comes true.

So do we reckon there will be a June Direct?
Would be good to get something decent and new from Nintendo.

We must be due a new 3D Mario?

I'm not holding my breath on a Direct. They could do one in July or August.

We could do with a new 3D Mario. Nintendo is a difficult one to peg because they continue to pump out these lower budget titles while seemingly keeping bigger titles hidden away or on the back burner. If it wasn't for BotW2 having a release window, I would probably scrap all of my excitement for Switch going forward and just assume they're not releasing anything of real value until they have to such as with launching a new console.

And on that topic, I really don't know if I want another go-around with a platform owner who can release something like BotW and then fail to push any new similar content for 5-6 years. Mario Odyssey was pretty good, but then after that it has been just a very long wait for anything new. Not even an announced Metroid Prime 4 has managed to release, and not even a rumored already-completed Metroid Prime port.... like what the f--k are these guys doing??

I know. 2017 had BOTW and Mario Odyssey and we haven't got any sequels since then. I guess Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were a one off.

No idea what they are up to.

It's interesting because a fuck up like MP4 can really set thing back if the company is relying on one or two huge releases every few years. Though I am honestly not sure how huge Metroid actually is.

I am fine with the Switch because I like the indie games, I don't game enough to need a new game every week or even every month and being able to play in the portable mode is perfect for me a lot of the time. However, it really does feel now like we got BotW and Odyssey and then we haven't really had a truly top tier release since then.

You would think that once development wraps on a Mario or Zelda product they would be right on to the next one but this isn't really happening, it seems. Unless they get to 2022 and think that since it's almost time for a new console it might be better to hold something back. I think more options are always good but I do worry for the future of the company.

The recent sports games just don't seem to come with enough quality single player content and the online dies really quickly so unless you are actually always playing these with friends and family you've kind of been sold a smaller package but still at a full game price. Mario Strikers, Golf and Tennis could probably have been a 3 in 1 package to be honest. Mario Sports or something. I don't think any of them have enough content for a standalone game.

Sometimes I am not sure if it's Nintendo that is directionless or it's just that I don't understand what they are doing from my own perspective.

BotW 2 should have been done and released by now.
Mario Maker is fine but we should have had an all new 2D Mario by now.
That Bowser's Fury add-on to Mario 3D world is actually quite good but we should have a new 3D Mario by now.
MK8 Deluxe is one hell of a package but we should have had an MK9 by now.
At least I would settle for some kind of MK Ultimate that just has every course or something.
Smash Ultimate is fine and it's a bit early for a new entry. OK.

I think that covers their BIG hitters.

I appreciate that other exclusives like Xenoblade, 2D Metroid, Kirby and Animal Crossing have had very good releases but I personally don't see these as being "big" Nintendo titles and I would think sales numbers show that too. Maybe with the exception of Animal Crossing.

I really enjoyed Skyward Sword and 3D All Stars to be honest and would be totally fine with getting a few more historic gems in the same way but I know it's not for everyone. I think a package of some Zelda HD games would have been good. Surprised we haven't seen 2D Zelda since Wind Waker, which I also enjoyed.

I think it's a big risk keeping things back.
The Wii U had some absolute gems but they fucked up the console launch and marketing and many of those have only now been acknowledged since they re-released on Switch.

You can easily imagine Switch 2 just doesn't sell very well and so BotW2 and Odyssey 2 plus other potential gems will not sell well.

Not even sure what a Switch 2 would be? Just a jacked up Switch with new joycons and more power? I hope they are not going to try something crazy again!

I know. 2017 had BOTW and Mario Odyssey and we haven't got any sequels since then. I guess Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were a one off.

2017 was crazy.
BotW, Odyssey, Arms, Splatoon 2, MK8D, Mario Rabbids, Xenoblade 2.

Sales of Nintendo games are weird.
You look at most other big games and you'll see massive sales at launch then a crazy drop off.
Then you'll see the games going on sale to try and catch people who didn't really want the game but would be willing to pay 50% or 40% etc.
Somehow these guys are still shipping millions of copies of Mario Kart years later. Mental.

The funny thing is that by having a really strong 2017 and 2018 they really built up the hype for Nintendo Directs just in time for the content of the Directs to fall off a cliff. So most of 2019, 2020 and 2021 you just saw people moaning about there being no Directs and then when the Direct comes people moaning because it doesn't blow their minds.

That's all before we even consider how Covid has actually affected them.
If development was at a snails pace or even paused for a few months then that's gonna have a pretty bad knock-on effect.

COVID is just the really nice and convenient excuse. The fact is that this has been Nintendo's strategy whenever they achieve Wii-like levels of success. We had Twilight Princess at launch, and then Skyward Sword dropped in so late in the Wii's life that a Zelda title almost didn't sell -- I bought the Skyward Sword limited edition with Wii controller plus for $40 that holiday. If you think about it, what did we get in the years leading up to Skyward Sword? Fitness, orchestra, and that Mario Galaxy sequel. Wii Play.

Nintendo hit absolute gold when they released Animal Crossing in time for COVID. Lightning in a bottle, for sure. Now, we're seeing things like Switch Sports, Mario Sports, and also some more experimental titles like Kirby 3d platformer -- and I'm incredibly glad to see them exploring stuff like 3d Kirby. It's just that you can only live off of fast food for sooo long; you can only settle for so much Taco Bell when what you've been craving is a more authentic Mexican restaurant -- right?

It feels like Nintendo is putting us on a fast food diet because the other stuff requires a lot more effort and investment. And I hear they're working on stuff like that, but then we never see the Donkey Kong that they are reportedly working on. We're also due to see more Zelda. Right now, GameFreak seems to have better output than the rest of Nintendo. 😆

I guess it boils down to whether or not one purchased a WiiU. If you did, this fallow period, filled out with re-releases of games already played is pretty shit. If you didn't, then I suppose all those titles make the switch line-up look pretty healthy and meaty.
To me it's just a bit of an FU to those who supported the company when they were in a bad place. But I guess the sales numbers don't lie, I doubt they give a toss about that subset of fans.

Been playing the demo, good so far, I'm almost up to chapter 4 at nearly 3 hours. probably gonna do the other 2 routes as well.

The gameplay reminds me of Age of Calamity with everybody's unique skills and how combat arts are used. Should make this far more enjoyable than the original Fire Emblem Warriors.

Edit: Also cutscenes are much improved this time around, they actually take place in the environments instead of distorted jpeg. Only downside so far is not everythings voice acted like Three Houses, but that's just me being spoiled from that game.

Maybe this will be the year Metroid Prime gets a remake…

Also, a chick named Alanah Pearce says that a Nintendo Direct is scheduled for the end of June. I've heard June 29th. Not sure if she's a reliable source or not

Agree , but didn't they scrap the first version and start from scratch?

Indeed they did. Still, probably shouldn't have even announced it until they had more than a JPEG to show.

I think they were in a bit of a drought at the time and maybe that's why they jumped the gun?

Any other competent publisher would have already published a decent Metroid Prime 4 game. In fact, competent publishers have given announcements of games/ports not even started and already released them. Multiple of them, even. This is all on Nintendo poorly managing Metroid Prime.

I mean, Nintendo themselves did it with Metroid Dread. And I think they announced Origami King something like five months before it launched.

It is what it is. They picked a dud developer to make the game, announced it too early, and here we are.

Yeah, and that's what I mean by poorly managing it. They thought they could outsource it to some development studio that has never worked on a Metroid Prime game under the direction of a third party publisher (Namco). If that didn't sound highly risky to them, then it either didn't strike them as all that important or they clearly didn't see (or foresee) the failure coming.

What they've done is mismanaged Retro Studios. It's entirely possible that the game has even lacked the budget necessary for this kind of project. Either it's AAA or it's not, but past Prime games were known for having some of the best visuals. It's going to require a lot of effort.

Yeah something weird must be going on with Retro, they haven't really released a new game since Tropical Freeze on the Wii U. They've helped a bit with other games but to think the developer of the Metroid Prime trilogy and two great DKC games has been relegated to bitch work on Mario Kart DLC or whatever for nearly a decade now is baffling.
