Thread: Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition [OT] ~Over the rainbow, there's a glorious sight!~

It's funny seeing this take more frequently nowadays when I remember back when it came out, a lot of people seemed disappointed.

Kind of a similar arc to how people felt about FFXII over time.

That's what I seem to remember as well. That's why I was a bit surprised to see so much praise/love here. I know we all have our personal tastes and preferences, but I could have sworn from reviews/GAF that it was considered a let down. I don't remember anything saying it was bad, it just wasn't the sequel that everyone wanted. That's why I got the impression this was more of a spin off game with much different gameplay/mechanics.

I wasn't a huge fan of the WiiU version. I think they added enough QOL stuff to make this version more enjoyable to me. I'm only 8 hours in so far. But I still think it will be one of the weakest Xeno games in the end. Right now I'd rank it 2nd from last, above Xenosaga 2. None of the Xeno games I'd consider bad though.

I put in a lot of hours in the last week because it's so easy to pick up and grind out some simple quests and errands for 20-30 minutes, or get absorbed for hours exploring and fighting and running away from enemies way above your level.

The overworld feels very alive despite some obvious shortfalls. You don't have NPCs walking around. You don't have dynamic weather and wind effects blowing around. You don't have dynamic events and quests popping up, it's all very rudimentary and simplistic. Yet, the sprawling map covered in creatures roaming around constantly makes it feel like there's always something going on around you, always some high-level enemy about to pounce on you. This is especially true if you turn Off the enemy market option in the settings.

Nintendo missed an opportunity here, something so obvious it shouldn't be downplayed: how on earth am I not playing this with at least one other player? I'm not selfish, I'm not asking for 4-player couch co op or something. But why can't I hop into a friend's campaign or they hop into mine and we do whatever we want? Why can't I play local wireless 4p like I used to play Monster Hunter?

Nintendo has some great open world titles but I think they need to take the leap and open these games up to co op. Especially if they could manage some kind of local 2 player, that would be a major selling point.

And I don't want anyone to make excuses: an indie dev made Outward, a complex open world RPG, and it has local 2p co op. That's insane value in my opinion, but Nintendo just sits on the potential.

So, took a break for a week and got back into it over the weekend. Just gotta say:

THE QUICK COOLDOWN IS SO GOOOD

If you want to spam it, you can mow down easier enemies pretty quickly. I'm still using the raygun (beam laser) and it's crazy powerful. Or, if you keep QC charges in the bank, you can activate those bonus party-callout abilities much more frequently. It's definitely a new dimension to the combat. Can't wait to get into end-game content to see how far the new combat system can be pushed. Still have yet to start Ch 5… spending my time exploring and finishing side quests.

My youngest son got into it too. Without knowing it, he already loves Monolithsoft maps after playing 100s of hours in BotW and TotK. He is mesmerized by the world, and he loves no stamina and no fall damage. He hasn't played many proper "big" RPGs so the huge amount of party members, quests, Arts, all the equipment, all the different classes, all the various subsystems, etc etc it's blowing his mind.

What's funny is he skips all the cutscenes. He got through the intro chapter in 30 minutes. I asked him why and he said "I don't care about the story, I just want to explore and collect more teammates"

Smart young man. Stories in games are a waste of time. Skip those cuts cenes and go play.

Funny enough, Nintendo figured this out briefly with BotW. That's what made it such a great game, it wanted you to play/explore. Then they decided to backtrack with TotK and the old problems reemerged.

I got the level 30 Skell and flying this week. So much fun wrecking things I used to run from. And it's impressive to seemlessly fly around the world considering this used to be on the WiiU.

Did you play it on WiiU?

It's really stunning how well it runs, how quickly it loads, etc. Probably one of the most optimized games of all time.

I'm very low key excited for any potential patches, Enhanced editions for the Xenoblade Trilogy and XDE on Switch 2. Ditto any potential Xenoblade 4, and or X2 built from the ground up with the Switch 2s near Xbox Series S performance in mind.

What I've seen of BotW running the great deku forest no problem on Switch 2 vs the struggles for that area on the Switch was very impressive.
