Thread: Work rants |OT|
Official Thread
Been taking a lot of time to reflect on how lucky I am to work for the company I do. End of year always slows down as everyone spends time with family and I've been grinding CS while putting in 6 hour days.

We have tons of really cool projects cooking and I reached another big milestone in one of my rollouts last week. Never thought this day would come but it did. It seems to be attracting the right attention and while there's still many more phases for rollout it feels good to be on the other side.

We're heading into diem end of year change freezes to hopefully prevent any outages durning the holidays.

Dear journal.

A couple days ago my boss called and told me there was another position open that he wants me to apply for. It's still under him but on another team he manages. I just applied but still no guarantee I get it. My company does not fuck around for any interview process. It's kind of annoying.

If I was to get this job my focus would shift from endpoints and vms to servers and design. Instead of managing packing applications in virtual environments and the infrastructure to make sure vms run smooth I would be focusing on cloud migrations and redesign of crucial services.

Man it would be great to not have to focus on updating apps. My current team kicks ass though and we get shit done. We also have a lot of great things cooking with the Windows365 platform. It would also be great to get away from Citrix.

Fuck I hate interviewing.

I pulled out of the interview process as I am not ready to leave my current team. I am excited for the projects we have cooking next year. Company is planning on building an internal AI and as that matures I would prefer to move to that team if there is an opening. Plus, I just cleared my plate of a lot of the shit work I have been doing for the past couple of years, handed off to a more junior engineer.... poor guy. If I was to move to another team I would be loaded with the shit work that many of them don't want to do.

My boss was very understanding and I feel he was impressed with my reasoning. So grateful I do not have to interview..... Makes the holidays much easier to enjoy.

So today my dev team had a bit of fun with some refreshments and treats. When it was over we still had a few boxes of (fresh made) Cookies from a great local bakery. So Me being the nice person I went and put them in our Cafe, took a picture and posted in the general office Slack channel that they were there and free for anyone to take (I even called out that one box was vegan/GF!)

So what happened next?

People say thank you? NOPE!

Instead I get slack messages asking me the nutritional details on the cookies. So I posted a link to the Vender's webpage. Then one person wrote about how they now feel guilty that the cookie was 250 cal and wish they hadn't eaten it and that next time I should tell them these details up front.

WHAT THE ABSOLUTE DOG SHIT SHOVELING FUCK is wrong with people these days. Its a fucking cookie, of course its not healthy, its a fucking dessert! And it was FREE asshole. Our society if swirling the bowl like a rogue turd.

So how paranoid are your coworkers? I just got a call from a coworker (mid 50s woman) telling me she's moving to New Caledonia next week because of the upcoming World War/Civil War. It's getting more and more frequent to have these discussions. I was always this right winger guy but seeing that it's getting mainstream stresses me a bit.

I might have spoken too soon. We got a mandate to come back to the office 5 days a week. If we want to wfh we need prior manager approval.

I guess it's time to leave. I thought about this a lot the last couple of weeks and had loads of ups and downs. But I am unwilling to go back to that life, especially since I have been able to do my job so much better the last few years due to working from home and build a much more balanced life. I will be formally asking to maintain the flexibility I've had since I started in the company (and gotten stellar reviews for my performance). If they refuse, I will be handing in my notice.

Holy shit, I am about fed up. Do you know what these buffalo fuckers did now? They made me work 80 hours. 80 fucking hours over two weeks and then had the absolute gall to pay me. Like they own my production over the past two weeks or some shit. I'm no one's whore and fuck if I'm gonna let them put the cash on the dresser and abscond into the night. Then, last week, I got sick. Out of common courtesy, I called to let them know, and guess what these titty shit ball gobblers did? THEY TOLD ME TO FEEL BETTER AND TO LET THEM KNOW IF I NEED ANYTHING. I don't need their fucking pity. They are not my mother. I am so fucking mad I could hurl a wagon full of puppies into the sun.

WTF are you drunk ass about, being paid 40h a week?

So I have a large team. I've been trying to get a few to apply for other teams as I can't get them more money. This would be opportunity for them to grow and make more money. They like my team to much and are afraid to leave. Sucks as I love loyalty but I don't want them to get stuck.

Looks like i only got a 2% raise this year lol

I got a large raise last year based on my performance. This lack of bonus applies to all management since we lost a massive chunk of our business midway through 2023.

Laying off some 25 staff at the end of June was not an ideal start to my summer.

The business we lost amounted to close to 10 million dollars. So I get why money is tighter. It still sucks as I had expectations to use that money.

But ah well... Still got a great place to work and people around me so just keep working and make more.

Survived another layoff, but man was it brutal this time, we lost close to 20% of my org and "more than 10%" company wide.

In the 20+ years I've been working in tech, I've had layoffs an average of every 3 years. Knock on wood, I haven't been hit yet.

My current employer has had some layoffs and my old boss at my previous company has just been made redundant with some others. Definitely dodging bullets at the moment with the state of the IT industry.

I got laid off from my IT job several weeks ago along with our whole department. Nothing special to say about it... it was one of those classic situations where our team was expected to assist and train the off-shore workers until upper mgmt decided they could replace us. Oh well. I made it over 10 years at that company.

I am hiring at the moment and I certainly see more people on the market. Quality though is another matter.... most people with an average of 5 years experience are just not good enough. Had to go to 10-12 years range to find suitable candidates.

Definitely receiving much fewer agent emails lately, as well. Market is not good for sure.

That's why I hate capitalism. Hopefully you'll get settled in a new job soon.

Man, I'm sorry for this, I hope you find something fast.

I hate offshoring with a passion.

Thanks guys. Surprised I made it a full decade, to be honest. I'm glad that, at least for the first few years, I got to experience a genuine nerdy IT job until it all got HR'd and sterilized across the industry. That culture was long dead by the time they axed me.

Absolutely, lots on the market, mostly shit. Not quite sure what's going on but finding anyone with half a brain is very fucking hard these days.

So I may or may not have spent most of my day in my current job doing induction stuff for the new job. No fucks given. Current job is a horror, thus I give no fucks. In other important news, the company portal thingy provides a breakdown of staff, including by gender, with options for non-conforming, non-binary, other, etc. None outside of male or female, so fingers crossed it's a tranny-free experience.

So at work I organized a "Senior" (Engineers) monthly round table discussion. Just a monthly meeting on the calendar for my Senior and above Engineers to meet and discuss what we could be doing better.

We were suppose to have one today. Last thursday I asked the group (in our slack channel) to add any topics they want to discuss. I get crickets. I prompt them again this morning to add topics and said that we would cancel if no one had any. Then four hours later (A half hour before the meeting) there were still no topics and not a single person (of >25 group) had even accepted (or declined) the meeting invite. So I decided to cancel it. And did.

And like clock work, 15min before the scheduled meeting time someone chimes in about how we shouldnt need topics and it should just be free-form and thinks I was wrong to cancel it.

W.T.F.

They (or ANY of the others) could have said this days ago. Or hell just accepted the meeting invite!

I swear, many professionals are just little kids in big boy clothes. Irresponsible and cry when THEIR actions (or inactions) lead to a less than ideal outcomes.

I think most of the people here are software engineers. Industrial shenanigans are just as bad.

Operations and maintenance compete to finger point, maintenance management undermines maintenance with cost cutting instead of treating it like an investment, and everyone backbites. Imagine putting off servicing a critical piece of equipment for 30 years and then surprisedpikachuing when it has much larger problems than expected when finally inspected. Suddenly that $200k job 15-20 years ago loses the plant several million in weeks of downtime. And no one is fired (not that most of the idiots who did that are even at the plant anymore) or blackballed at whatever position they failed up into. No one wants to talk the minutiae or technical side either.
