Thread: What are you watching?
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes - 9/10

Great follow-up to War for the Planet of the Apes. I enjoyed Noa's story, the next-level special effects, action sequences (especially the flooding bunker), concise dialogue and falcon element in the movie. Looking forward to the sequel and where they take the story next.

Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse - 10/10

Honestly the only Spider-Verse animated movie you need to watch. Miles Morales, his family and other Spidey characters are used extremely well. The soundtrack is excellent and visuals hold up really well. Plenty of entertaining scenes, great action and humorous moments. For me it is as good as Spider-Man (2002).

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - 9/10

I think this was much better than its follow-up Fallout. I love the chase scene in Casablanca, the underwater heist and opera sequences. In my opinion, the most recent Mission: Impossible movies have lost the edge, with Dead Reckoning Part 1 being mostly underwhelming and not to mention overlong.

Shin Ultraman - 6/10

I thought I would like this movie since I really liked Shin Godzilla, but Ultraman was a little too nonsensical and the resolution was some textbook sci-fi stuff where aliens spare humanity. A bullshit climax and a lot of unnecessary dialogue during the few action scenes which made watching with English subtitles frustrating. Overrated.

Oppenheimer - 8/10

I like the cinematography and music. Great performances. A lot of scene changes though which I didn't really like, especially given the three hour runtime. Loved the Trinity test and auditorium scenes as well as the whole ending.

Next: Godzilla Minus One.

As said elsewhere on the site, it gets a bit ridiculous with everyone wearing these bulletproof suits. While I was actively watching it I was thinking 'just shoot him in the foot'. It was a cool idea introduced in the second film initially, but way overused since. Agree though the top down view was great, very Hotline Miami, but otherwise pretty forgettable and there was something quite risible about the whole Tokyo Continental in terms of the styling. I legit hope they call it quits, but I anticipate John will be back from the dead at some point.

Too many action scenes with somewhat similar moves, at some point it just becomes noise. And the fighting scenes make no sense at all. Wick wouldn't survive just like that, like the stair scene at the end. Barely any cover, but they don't hit him.

John will be back from the dead at some point.

Keanu said he'd like to do it but he thinks his body can't handle it.

If they do continue they should do it in animated films or games.

I know there's an anime prequel about John breaking free from the life and how he got the name Baba Yaga coming out, hopefully that's good.

Wrapped it up. I didn't realise it was a one-off mini-series versus a new show, but overall, it was pretty good binge if a little predictable towards the end. Give it a solid 7.75/10.

@King of Foxes that actress I thought I recognised her from somewhere, she's got a small role in the Michael Fassbender CIA drama The Agency as a young field agent.

Apparently, it was planned to leave it open if he really died or not, but Keanu said his knees are too fucked up to make another movie. Then insisted to make it pretty clear that John Wick is done.

He will return though, in Ballerina as a cameo. The movie takes place when he was still alive.

I am currently watching The Boys show.

I really loved it, the first 3 seasons is goat for me. I was really surprised to see how non woke this show was, especially since it was made by Amazon and was released in 2019.

Without revealing anything, also please keep in mind that I have only watched the first 2 episodes in season 4, but it is clear to see that they are starting to put woke stuff into the show. It really sucks, because I legit like the show and it is one of my all time favorites hands down.

Yeah the last episode was the weakest of them all IMO, feels like they didnt know how to finish it up and went with the forced "happy end".

Yeah, up until then it was great. Still, overall a decent mini-series for the most part. I suspect the Mormons aren't happy about it though. I'd be up for more western series in that vein though.

I watched a couple clips on YouTube and it looked like some high budget tim and Eric sketch.

While I know I dont understand all of it and despite its glaring shortcomings, I mostly enjoyed it.

But seriously, the plot, style, themes, etc are just layered thick and in number. A lot to take in at once.

If it were a burger it would be this:

I just see a scene like this and I don't know how I could possibly take anything about the movie seriously.

No. Just skip. Even with some attempted member berrying....it was still bad. Story is dumb and overly complex, musical numbers annoy and its scene pacing makes the events seem rushed through. Not much of the humor landed for me. The jokes felt bland, basic & labored. No zing.

I haven't seen it and don't feel the urge to, but I get the sense that sometimes it's best not to revisit the past, and this felt like another one in the same vein as Ghostbusters that just didn't need returning to. Not sure what Bil Murray is up to, but please do not ever think of making a Groundhog sequel.

Anyway, outside of American Primeval, I figured I'd give Zack Snyders Netflix animated series Twilight of the Gods a look.

On the positive, the animation is pretty good. Although a lot more stylised in comparison to, say Blue Eye Samurai, and has some definite The Banner Saga vibes to it, though not quite as detailed. On the negative Girlboss from the Fjords. Bar the names I'm not that familiar with Norse Mythology to know how well or how loosely it ties into things, if at all, however, Sigrid although not quite a Mary Sue, is a bit too super capable at times. Also, the season ends on what is essentially a 'to be continued' but there isn't much sense that Netflix is in any hurry to renew it. If you like animation maybe give it a watch, but I wouldn't describe it as a must-watch, and being Netflix it leans woke.

Netflix has added Pantheon recently, which I do recommend though. I thought it was a pretty good show exploring the idea of uploaded intelligence as a concept.

Yeah, it was originally an AMC show and ran for 2 seasons, but it didn't get renewed beyond that. Although I think it left off OK where it was, however maybe Netflix might commission a third season if it does well. Still, regardless, I thought it tackled the idea of uploaded intelligence pretty well. Ever since I read the Sprawl Trilogy by Bill Gibson, it's always something that I've thought about. IIRC, in the 2nd or Third book, The Finn, the rat-faced tech dealer character from Neuromancer has uploaded himself and exists solely as an entity, and it does make you think what would that be like.

It's a funny, campy movie designed to make you feel good and optimistic. I don't know why everyone thinks that Copolla meant to make Godfather 4 and ended up with this. If you liked his Dracula you're probably going to like this.

Anyway I finally watched The Crying Game and as a massive racist and sexist (in Minecraft) and a general hater of movies about sad people, I found it to be absolutely brilliant. I knew the twists but it didn't matter. It's amazing. In case you didn't hear about it, I would advise you to watch it without reading anything about it.

The difference being that the first new Ghostbusters movie was actually decent. Jokes seemed to hit well, the cast was fun, and it was a great sendoff to the old characters. Then they blew it with a terrible sequel.

As for what I am watching, currently binge watching Lie to Me*. It's a decent enough series, but like most procedurals it suffers from a lack of overall story arcs. Although I'd love to see the main character square off with House, those two verbally sparring would be brilliant.

Godzilla Minus One - 10/10

As close to a perfect movie as you can get, in my opinion. I enjoyed the way in which Godzilla was introduced suddenly along with his ominous presence, the dialogue about fighting a personal war with ghosts. I also really liked the slow build-up and execution of Godzilla's heat ray. Incredible cinematography and editing that really lends itself well to the human drama, scenes with clever use of light and shadow and sound design, feels like a classic Japanese movie a lot of the time (even in color, haven't seen it in black-and-white) and with great action scenes. A couple moments, including the ending, when I got teary-eyed. A genuine classic.

Currently viewing "Brawl In Cell Block 99" with the Missus. I think we're like halfway through and i like it, but it feels like a slow burn compared to my usual fare

Added a subscription to Crunchyroll because my oldest daughter wanted to watch SpyxFamily. So here's what we've watched over the last week:

SpyxFamily - nearly done w season 1. They love the slapstick and light drama.

Dragon Ball - they've watched DBZ up to season 3 but never saw DB. So far they like it.

Kaiju No. 8 - pretty decent action and not too "serious" despite the gore. Kinda like One Punch Man combined with Attack On Titan.

Frieren - interesting so far. Seems like the whole series is gonna be dramatic and cozy and sad, based on the first episode.

Samurai Champloo - I was due for a rewatch anyway. My oldest son loves it so far especially the music and the action

Mashle Magic and Muscle - simple and funny slapstick kinda show. Similar to Saiki K or One Punch Man

Spaced and The League of Gentlemen mostly this week. Good stuff. I've got so many damn movies to watch at the moment, though.

It was pretty cool, back in the day, but I suspect it hasn't aged that well.
Without Kurt Russell in there it'd be a total dud. That one scene with the ugly woman in the diner was funny as fuck though, I'll give him that. Even for its time, not a very impressive movie. John Carpenter is severely overrated imo. I wouldn't call myself a fan of his work, so far everything I've seen has been a bit boring. Only The Thing really pulled me in and felt like a true classic. The rest are good for a watch but I can't see myself wanting to view any of them again anytime soon

Watched A Quiet Place: Day One

+ Good acting
+ Good chemistry between the characters
+ I liked the main character

- Not tense at all, the previous movies had way better scenes but also, the concept got old. Just be quiet.
- No real stakes tbh, no sense of urgency, it was kinda bleh for me

Also, again of course following up with a female black character. I liked her and thought she was really good. But it's funny how the blackwashing is law in that industry.

It was an ok movie but not even close to the other two.

Brief Encounter (1945)

brief-encounter-onesheet_poster.jpg

There were some interesting lines as they flirted with each other in the beginning, and a bit more comedic in moments than I expected. It was OK overall. I'm not sure what the take-away is exactly, outside of suggesting that it's possible to fall in love after marriage, but not to commit to it (have sex). It's funny that most of her days seem to consist of shopping and watching movies.

I'd give it a 5/10. It's aight. Surprising how highly rated this one is.

Primer (2004)

MV5BZTRmZDlmNzUtNjM2NS00MjBjLWFmNjQtMTczMWNkZTdiOGZmXkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_FMjpg_UX1000_.jpg

Low budget time-travel movie. Extremely involved script / dialogue to compensate. They still had some cool shots they were able to assemble. It's interesting. In weird ways, it almost reminded me of Tenet. The dialogue was definitely overdone. Especially when they talk over each other. Should've edited down a bit towards a more traditional narrative. The uniqueness is cool, but the balance wasn't quite there. The runtime is reasonably short though, which is appreciated.

6.5/10 - I'll probably watch a plot analysis video if that's available

Just saw that it has pretty bad ratings. For me, it was pretty enjoyable, I liked the characters, the writing, plot twists and the overall atmosphere. Not the most intense thriller or most genius directing. I watched it on a flight, was good for that.

And it has absolutely zero woke BS.

Very stupid stuff in there. An ok watch, with some good action scenes. Dumb fun, nothing to write home about.

So, I just watched Netflix's latest offering in their Witcher franchise, the new animated film Sirens of the Deep.

sirensofthedeep.jpg

Normally I wouldn't bother ever since Netflix fucked up the 2nd season of the live action show and made Henry Cavill leave. But... this movie has the benefit of having Doug Cockle, Geralt of Rivia's voice actor in the CDPR videogame trilogy reprising his famous role once more, and being based on one Andrzej Sapkowski's short stories, A Little Sacrifice. This story in particular, features the bard Essi Daven, one of my favorite one off characters in the Witcherverse and romantic interest to Geralt. Surely with all these positives, Netflix couldn't possibly fuck this up, right?

Oh, but I spoke too soon. This movie deviates HEAVILY from the short story to a certain degree, even up to CHANGING THE GODDAMN ENDING. The over the top action is also a bit excessive for what is essentially a simple story regarding Geralt trying to get over a recent breakup with Yennefer. And I haven't mentioned this is still Netflix's version of The Witcher with all it's DEI PoC's all over the place.

Lore breaking fuckery aside, it's not all bad, Doug Cockle once again shines as Geralt with his gruff voiced delivery neatly conveying the character's world weary yet understated nobility. Christina Wren is also great as Essi Daven, and she and Cockle have great chemistry which brings to life one of the more sweet romantic encounters Geralt has had in the stories. And as always, Joey Batey is a riot as Jaskier (Dandelion).

I give this movie a 6/10. Could have been so much higher if they'd hewed closer to the original story and stopped with the DEI shite.
