Thread: What are you watching?
White Lotus on Max is pretty compelling. Managed to binge 2 season in 3 days and I'm only excited for more as the upcoming season 3 hits soon.

Had never heard about this show but on a whim started watching and holy shit there's some epic moments. Definitely of the 'Dark Comedy' variety

I just got back from seeing this. I liked it but I didn't love it. It had some amazing moments like when Thomas first meets Nosferatu, ending sequence and lily-rose Depp's performance in general.

But I didn't like the look of Orlok and it sorted dragged a little longer than I would've liked.

Just caught up to the latest episode on crunchyroll and Im digging it even though im not a huge DBZ fan. Some amazing animation and epic fights(Ep 12 for example)

Finally watched the Super Mario Bros movie.

Fun, not too long, awesome music, very nice visuals, charming, well made. Only the girl boss Peach was boring, typical strong female with no character development, just a flawless being. Boring.

Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Season 1 was entertaining, but Season 2 was Top-tier for sure. I'm looking forward to Season 3 as well.

I am kinda baffled by how bad Gladiator 2 is.

This is some of the worst acting Ive ever seen from Denzel Washington, and he looks like he's on whatever shit RDJ is.

I have no desire to watch it. Not out of any dislike of Denzel, but more just not wanting to support Ridley Scott and his rampant desire to continue to shit up his back catalogue further. I'm genuinely grateful that due to a scheduling conflict, he couldn't work on BR22049 and DV was given the gig. Albeit I know he's involved with the Amazon Blade Runner 2099 TV Mini-series, he's merely an executive producer and the writing/directing is in someone else's hands. Certainly, they might fuck it up, but at least he won't be directly responsible.

As for what I've been watching, Squid Game 2. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, as I binged the entire thing over two days. However, I was a bit irked that it was more Squid Game 2: Part 1, versus a complete season.

Anyway, I liked the switch-up overall, with Gi-hun trying to usurp the games, whilst at the same time 001 the frontman was looking to undermine him. My main criticisms would be that Gi-hun should have known from experience that whoever was running the games would have someone in the contestants, just as they did during the first game and his lack of suspicion, especially when 001 initially voted to stay in was a real oversight.

Curious to see where the storyline goes with No-eul, the Triangle Guard, given she is at odds with the organ-stealing crew. Also, it looks like the dude she cares about 246 (played by Lee Jin-wook), seemed to get killed at the end. That dude has been a lead actor in other shows, so I can't imagine he just took a small role in the series, or that his storyline is now over.

I didn't mind the trans character. I found it was quite funny that they didn't shirk away from the awkward aspect of them not being able to pass as a woman. No wonder the chuds at Era are so mad about it.

Glad Thanos got killed, that dude was annoying as fuck, esp with his lapses into English throughout.

The detective, gangster and boat storyline meandered a bit, and it wasn't much of a surprise that the ship's captain was essentially working for the game's master. It didn't make a lot of sense that he happened to have found the detective just floating out at sea Jason Bourne-style, let alone would then indulge him on a 2-year wild goose chase every weekend taking him out to explore these hundreds of islands. Still, hopefully, they will suss things out fairly quickly in the next season and beat the true location out of him.

They messed up Squid Game? I've never seen the first season despite the hype, as I've had my fill with death game media. Still though, it's kind of rare to see the Koreans mess up something they made.

Agree with you on Squid games S2, and a big part of it is just too many branching stories away from the main plot. Story just isn't as cohesive as the first season and not having a proper finish was a horrible mistake. Only speaking for myself but any time Netflix has done partial releases on seasons I find myself jumping in and then forgetting to return when more come out or lose interest.

So if we have to wait 1-2 years to see how S2 really ends it's Stranger Things all over again

They said at the end that Season 3 (or Part 2) was coming in 2025. Rumours are it will be mid-year, rather than a Christmas affair.

Seems like they felt they had too much to pack in within 10 episodes so decided to extend it out.

Shin Godzilla - 9/10

I enjoyed the realism, scenes with Kayoco (Satomi Ishihara), Rando Yaguchi (Haroki Hasegawa), Godzilla mutating, and low-angle shots of the iconic monster rampaging through Japan. I really liked the way Godzilla destroyed large sections of Tokyo after getting hit with the bunker buster bombs. The climax with the multi-stage plan to freeze Godzilla was also interesting, along with Goro Maki's research and the way Yaguchi's team came up with their plan.

I watched with Japanese audio and English subtitles enabled and although some dialogue moved a little fast, I found the movie to be pretty immersive. Overall, Shin Godzilla was a good movie and I would watch it again.

Watched Nosferatu.

I liked it? Big issue with the story.

Craft-wise it was pretty dope. They didn't parody an old style movie but they did a lot of things to make it feel "vintage". Framing every shot in the center like a silent movie, very cheesy effect style like they were on 70s tech a sensibilities. It felt like a kind of movie they don't make anymore without drawing attention to it.

It's sloooow to start. Especially if you're familiar with the story.

It makes sense to stray of the path with Nosferatu — Dracula with the serial numbers filed off — and I liked the "subversion"… until the end. I might be officially to redpilled to enjoy anything anymore, but long and the short:

Rather than Mina (or Ellen) being a victim of Dracula (Count Orlok), she summons or "manifests" him as a bored and horny child in a somewhat Faustian bargain. Ultimately, she brings about the destruction of everyone that cares for her and all the things she says she wants.

I thought this would be a great take, and a lot of things in the movie support her as a kind of villain, or at least in terms of consequences — but in the end a couple of things fuck it up summed up in the line "she will redeem us all".

They set her up as some kind of hero for doing what she wants and suffering the same fate as Dracula — no longer being allowed to exist in a moral world.
Lines form William DaFoe's Van Helsing: "He is beyond our morality!" implies that she is too. "You've done nothing wrong, just following your nature".

So what is she redeeming everyone else from exactly? Their only sin as far as I can tell is not listening to her. Her father not giving her the attention she wanted, her friend's husband for being skeptical of her "faerie fantasies", Thomas for leaving when she told him not too. I could be hung up on the word "redeemed"… if he said "saved", I'd be much less annoyed.
I also thought taking the hunt away from the men was really patronizing.

tl;dr it's not woke but there's some eye rolling stuff; big "I choose the bear" fem energy that could have been poignant i.e. the consequences of choosing the bear, but alas, Hollywood and it's brave women.

It can't touch Coppola's Dracula and isn't even the best "Nosferatu" movie with William DaFoe (that's Shadow of the Vampire). Coppola asked us to sympathize with Dracula, and Nosferatu asks us to sympathize with a young girl's lustful fantasies.

I enjoyed watching it though. I think this is just how it's going to be with modern movies for me :/

Over the last month I have watched all the Heisei Godzilla films:

The Return of Godzilla (1984)
Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991)
Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992)
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994)
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

As a whole they were decent and have a more or less continuity. This continuity let them keep characters around and build on previous events. While the human acting is all over the board, with some being somber and dry and others being campy. But one thing was done consistently well, the Monster costumes! They were fantastic. Heisei Godzilla might be my favorite design. Makes him look a little meaner like an actual predator.

Here is how i would rate each one if you just want to watch the better ones:
The Return of Godzilla - 8/10
Godzilla vs. Biollante - 8/10
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah -5/10
Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) - 7.5/10
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - 6/10
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla - 6/10
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - 7/10

Finished Delicious in Dungeon today and I loved it! Great animation and food porn throughout. Can't wait for season 2. I'm now watching all the old Monday Night Raw episodes on the Raw Vault in anticipation of the Netflix premiere tomorrow. Right now I'm watching all the 1994 episodes :) Cool to see young Vince and Jim Ross

They didn't mess it up, it's more a case of Season 2 is Season 2: Part 1, because it doesn't round out versus ends on a cliffhanger. We need to wait for Season 3 (dropping sometime this year) to see how the story concludes.

I'd still give it a strong recommendation, but perhaps wait for Season 3 to drop and then binge all 3.

As for presently watching. Amongst the series a few people listed in their best of the year, Apple TVs Sugar starring Colin Farrell got a fair few mentions: -

Where Farrell a movie obsessed private eye who specialises in finding people is tasked with locating the Grandaughter of a legendary Movie Mogul. Farrell is blatantly channelling his inner Sean Connery with this role. It's pretty engaging, although there is a lot of mystery to Farrell's character that does raise some intriguing questions. On the negatives, it does seem to operate in the space where Farrells Character seems to almost not give a damn about money, to the extent you have to wonder why he even does what he does. Still about halfway through and enjoying it so far. Apparently Apple has green-lit it for a second Season.

Sakamoto Days: I just finished watching the pilot episode on Netflix and I like it. Fun little action-comedy that doesn't take itself too seriously.

I read the first 11 or 12 volumes of the manga and shelved it when I found out about the anime so I've been looking forward to this. How is the animation and art, and is this episodic or all available now?

It's a weekly show, and the animation was just okay—nothing mind-blowing. The shootout scenes were fun to watch I'll keep watching to see if it gets better but so far I liked it.

Ford v Ferrari - 10/10

Really enjoyed the story, excellent racing scenes, and performances by Matt Damon and Christian Bale. Also enjoyed Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe, as well as the actors who played Henry "the Deuce" Ford, Enzo Ferrari etc. All of the cast were great in my opinion. A lot of engaging and interesting dialogue. I loved the cinematography too. Beautiful cars, good music, great use of special effects, vignette and color grading. The 24 hours at Daytona and Le Mans races were some of my favorite moments in the movie but I also thought the ending was done really well too.

I've been trying to embrace some old school cinema having found a great love for Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns I've been trying out some John Wayne movies

Tried Rio Bravo and El Dorado but they just don't have the same grit/violence as the Eastwood movies

If anybody has some John Wayne movie suggestions please let me know I'm willing to try some old shit out

Rushmore (1998)

Y0djQC5qcGc

Picked this up on Blu Ray from the Criterion Collection not too long ago and decided to take it for a spin. Always love watching this film! I swear Rushmore -> Royale Tenenbaums -> Life Aquatic was an epic run by Wes Anderson. Each of those films are some of the very best tales about being a bent but not broken human. How redemption is always there if you are willing to accept your failings. Every time I watch them I feel I am Max Fisher, I am Herman Blume, I am Royal Tenenbaum, I am Steve Zissou. Such powerful stuff wrapped in the peculiarity and wit that is a Wes Anderson film.

Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law. So silly. Love seeing all the Hanna Barbera characters in these stories. Been great to binge while snowed in and under the weather.

I'm pretty lit right now but have been binging Seinfeld and noticed something I just cannot overlook. Seasons 1-7 for Seinfeld were brilliant. Season 8 I noticed a very specific trend....the comedy got a lot darker and a lot more mean spirited of which it seemed the show never really crossed into.

I'm on S:8 E10 and I had to research what the drastic difference was and I guess it correlates..... Larry David left after S7 so this is all Jerry. To be clear all of the mean spirted shit is happening in the foil of history built from previous seasons which makes the punchline that more vicious which makes sense in that this comedy is less 2 people and more 1 person. It's a darker tone but brilliant dark comedy built on all previous seasons.

Probably my third (or fourth) watch. Picked it up on Blu Ray and wanted to do a function test. My thoughts on the film are still the same. Cool overarching story, cool ass fights, the Silent style is still scary as fuck. And both Tatsuya Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune are BADASS.

Sure i also think the story has some over complications that can make it feel slow at times and some characters feel superfluous. But nothing egregious enough to stain the overall experience.

And again Tatsuya Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune are badass. And no slight to Nakadai, but Mifune steals every scene he is in. Damn that man has screen presence!

I started watch yellowjackets with my wife. It's not bad only 5 episodes in. I've been watching landman and penguin. Enjoying both of them for different reasons. Also started watching shameless again. Jimmy/steve was to awesome for that show.

John Wick 4

That was better than I expected. Yeah, Keanu slowed down significantly but he's giving his best. Entertaining watch, with some crazy scenes. The top down scene was incredible, freaking amazing. Still, too many similar scenes and takedowns, got a bit tiring. And the blind dude shooting people 20 meters away was to dumb, even for this movie.

Performances were very good, I liked the movie. It's good that the series ended, though.

I saw the trailer on this on Netflix and wasn't too sure, but I'll give it a go based on your recommendation.

Anyway watched the finale of Season 2 of Silo. Pretty damn happy with how it concluded overall and that they are sticking to the books in terms of the plot line for the most esp with the cold reveal at the end effectively going back in time before the Silo

As said elsewhere on the site, it gets a bit ridiculous with everyone wearing these bulletproof suits. While I was actively watching it I was thinking 'just shoot him in the foot'. It was a cool idea introduced in the second film initially, but way overused since. Agree though the top down view was great, very Hotline Miami, but otherwise pretty forgettable and there was something quite risible about the whole Tokyo Continental in terms of the styling. I legit hope they call it quits, but I anticipate John will be back from the dead at some point.
