Thread: What are you watching?
Ah I read Wool a few years ago and liked it. Didn't know there was a tv show to go with it.

The principals are the same in terms of the plot, but there's a lot more backstory to the characters versus the book and information given.

As is the way with modern tv - lots of filler and padding.

No, more the reveal of information. For instance, the first episode is mainly about the Sheriff and his Wife and sets up events that the book brushes over pretty quickly. The issue with adaptation is always the challenge of delivering information that you are privy to as a reader when hearing the protagonist's inner thoughts but needs to be converted through practical means in a series.

The Day After (1983)

A movie everyone should see at least once. Really powerful, and despite the terrible happenings in the movie, it ends on the lines: "A real nuclear attack would have significantly more severe consequences than what this movie shows".

Putin cannot die soon enough. Anybody threatening the use of such weapons is insane.

Watched Antman Quantumania. Honestly, I enjoyed that movie a lot. Although I still don't get whats the threat about Kang. The bonus-scene with him cosplaying as Pharao and more was super cringe.

Fired on Mars. I liked it so much I made a thread here about it. Apparently it's not very popular.

Also watching Search Party on HBO.

Hokuriku Proxy War (1977)

Another winner from Kenji Fukasaku. It's his fairly typical Yakuza subterfuge, but unlike most which take place in the big cities like Kobe, Osaka, Hiroshima or Tokyo. This one takes place in the norther 'back country' of Fukui. Its a classic tale of betrayal and pride...but in the snow! Overall its a very fun film if you like the genre.

The final season is almost done airing. It has been pretty good.

It can sometimes give you that tonal whiplash where it presents a situation as serious but with characters that turn into living cartoons, but overall I've been liking the ending.

Rewatched Kingsman

I forgot the brutal takedown of the Climate Cult this film executes. Not only did it have the balls to attack the anti-human agenda using the elite's desire to cull the population as a plot point, they went so far as to even have Obama(you only see the back of his head but you hear that dumb voice) take part in it.

Not only that, but it goes so far as to blow his fucking head off along with all of the other elites who jumped on the bandwagon.

Good reminder - I saw the trailer for it years ago and never got round to watching it but it did look like good fun. It is now heading for my Plex server.

Very Kick-Ass/Wanted type of film, I make the obvious comparison because these are films from GNs done by the same dude who purposely tailors his stuff to be easily adapted to the screen.

John Wick 4 (2023)

WTF did I just watch. The tale of a world devoid of logic, consistency or physics. That's what.

A blind guy winning in gun fights? 'Bullet proof' business suits.... that are also somehow not arrow or knife resistant? "Trained" assassins/soldiers missing multiple shots from <5ft all day long. People running "assassin society" hotels with ZERO 30 Cal+ weapons? The Table, the Marque...its all just so incredibly laughable and insulting. This series has become Twilight for men.

Dont get me wrong, the movie was fun, very fun.... but you have to entirely shut your brain off for three hours. If you dont you will likely pass out from endless eye rolling.

And they even did this lol

I gave up on the 3rd one by the time he was talking to Halle Berry in that one underground room. But then I tried watching it again (from that point) recently and got all the way up to the part where they were fighting in the hotel.

But your comment about the lack of logic did make me think of something that annoyed me in the 3rd one. For a movie that goes so far in creating and planning and choreographing action scenes, there was one that was so stupid.

They are on a long street fighting on motorcycles. Neo is causing all this destruction and mayhem, killing all these biker ninjas. Then he turns around and goes back the way he came...and the fight continues on a completely cleared off street that should have been covered in the wreckage from 10 seconds ago. I know you're supposed to shut off your brain like you mentioned, but I can't shut it off that hard.

Did you skip 2 and 3 and go right to this from the first or something? Like nearly everything you're talking about was built up by prior films there's literal exposition dumps on how the bulletproof suits work and shit. The knife thing is actually pretty common in fiction, like a knife puncturing Batman's armor but not bullets in the Batman flicks, or the recent Dune. Not sure of the LOGISTICS of it but the movie absolutely is showcasing stuff that has never happened and will never happen so... I don't care? 5/5

@ogrebushi & I are rewatching Deadwood -- on season 2 right now.

We'd watched it ages ago but had quit when an episode ended in cliffhanger that freaked me out and I couldn't continue because I was terrified a certain character would die. But Ogre looked up spoilers and confirmed said character is alive in the movie, so I've decided it's safe to finish the series.

I saw the previous films. Each sequel got more dumb and outlandish. Piling more and more lane "lore" and diluting what made the first one good. Four was just continuing the trend.

I watched John Wick 1 with a buddy when it first dropped and didnt understand the hype. Seemed pretty run of the mill action movie to me

Maybe I'll check it out again as id love to be proven wrong

Even watched that awful Key and Peele satirical homage they released. Terrible

Gonna throw a prediction out there... when they make a part 5 you'll be in here telling us it was even sillier, lol. Not that that's an issue, it just fascinates me.

Yea probably. At the current trend I expect the next one to reveal that the High Table is run by the ancient Vampire family the Vulturi. Or something equally retarded.

Not as bad as you might expect, but not very good either. It honestly felt very similar to After Earth with Will Smith. Its definitely entertaining, but nothing I would recommend. Cool CG Dinos, but could haver been utilized far better.

I actually couldn't even watch it all the way through. And that sucks because the trailer had me pretty pumped, but it ended up just feeling like a crappy movie I've seen so many times already.

It didn't really excel at anything. And when the really bad attempts at humor started happening between him and the kid walking around in the woods, I realized how short life was and how much of my precious free time was melting away.

Still watching Silo at present which I'm really digging, although I was intrigued enough by it that I ended up buying the audiobooks and I wrapped those up yesterday. It's a pretty good story overall, but I think it's going to be very interesting to see how they try and accommodate everything in the books themselves as there is a lot of stuff to cover. The second book for instance takes a major detour, so much so that they deliberately used a different narrator for that book versus the one from books one and three, and I'm kind of intrigued as to how they intend to cover all of that.

I started that because a friend compared it to From, a lot to differentiate the two but it looks interesting so far. From has been pretty good as well, a bit crazy, but good.

This was surprisingly good. Lots of humor, a wee bit of emotion and lots of witty fairy tale adaptation. Would recommend to anyone who enjoyed the Shrek films.

On bit that was interesting about this one was the animation style. It was very similar to Into the Spiderverse at times. That chunky animation with simplified visuals. Not sure if it was a cost savings or a style choice. Either way it worked well, though not as impactful as it was in the Spiderverse.

Watched John Wick 2 last night having watched the first a few weeks ago, doing the series for the first time. Very very silly but I enjoyed it.

I think some of you guys may be outgrowing action films, because they've always been goofy and borderline if not outright retarded in a lot of ways. You're not supposed to take them too seriously, you're there to enjoy the violence.

Just watched Sisu, and it's the perfect example of this and I fucking loved it.

This was really good. Fantastic stop motion and general art direction. Solid voice actors and one hell of an emotional story arc. I was honestly not prepared for how much this one got to me. A beautiful film with a novel take on a beloved tale. Recommended!

Yeah it hit me hard, I think being a new parent it hit a little harder than it might otherwise have done, but yeah it hit hard.
