It can be easy to feel shunned when it comes to queer representation within gaming. Not only do LGBTQ people put up with endless derogatory, homophobic, and transphobic comments littered around every grimy corner of social media whenever a queer character crops up in a game, but a recent report showcases just how little this group is represented in the medium.

...Kenney, who started her career as a journalist, has written for some of the industry's most popular video games. From Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Batman: The Enemy Within to The Walking Dead: The Final Season and the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine

In a moment of reflection, Kenney credits the late great Danielle Bunten Berry, a trans woman and pioneer game developer who created one of the first successful multiplayer games on the Atari platform, M.U.L.E.

Give up on Wolverine now and save yourself the time and hype you may have spent. Insomniac is done.

I remember there was a time where we had no idea whos character sexuality was because it was completely irrelevant. Did Doom guy wanted to fuck a hot blonde or a dude? We will never know because it's irrelevant to the game.

Yeah, LGBT representation in particular feels blatant because unlike race or gender, you can't immediately tell whether someone is LGBT at a glance. So they either have to shoehorn in a scene just to show that or "code" them to make it obvious, which usually just makes them a raging stereotype.

Then you add on top of that the fact that LGBT people are ultimately an extremely small minority of the population, so the amount of representation already in media is massive overrepresentation. That's been an issue with all sorts of demographics, really. I remember reading an article where people were asked to estimate what percentage of a population any particular group was, and almost all the minorities were vastly overrepresented compared to the actual numbers (https://today.yougov.com/politics/articles/41556-americans-misestimate-small-subgroups-population). For example, Asians like myself make up only 6% of the total US population, but were estimated to be 29%, nearly 5 times more. Black people, on the other hand, are 12% of the population but estimated to be 41%, so over 3 times more.

Within that, transgender people are around 1% of the population, but estimated to be 21% (21 times the real number) and gay/bi people are around 3% of the populatioon, but estimated to be 30% (10 times the real number).

I can certainly imagine some people who congregrate within their social groups end up thinking those groups are larger than they actually are, but that creates the issue of overrepresentation where people who make up far less of the actual population have far more attention paid to them.

If something is so inherently good, why does it need to be pushed on us by force?

Yeah Insomniac won't get any of my money anymore.

This 100%

Naughty dog knew LOU Part 2 would get alot of hate so they thrusted this shit in front of everyones face and used it like a shield so that if you hated the game you were seen as not supporting LBQT..XYZ..ect
LOU2 was a game that played very well but had the story and pacing completely wrong so I'm very intrigued about season 2 of the tv show as they appear to be copy/pasting again so its gonna be a shitshow all over again

Maybe they will inject another gay episode. So brave.

Keep pulling those levers, motherfuckers. Every time you do, my wallet thanks you and someone/thing else gets my money. I don't want to pay anyone $70 for a ride down the slippery slope of social engineering and militant activism, I pay that to be entertained. And I have way too many other places to spend my money.

For example, I went to a concert and dinner last night and blew a bunch of money and didn't have one motherfucker get into my face with a bullhorn and ask "WHAT R U DOING ABOUT GAY RIGHTS, HUH HUH HUH?" Fuck off with your bullshit, my support isn't unconditional. I got by just fine before Insomniac games, and I can do it again and it'll be so easy I won't even notice it to be honest. These people way overvalue what they are doing and seem to think I need it; I don't. I can walk away and be just fine.

Depends on the game. More and more games these days want to tell a cinematic narrative. Being gay is far more normalized now than it was in the 80s or 90s. I dont see why games shouldn't reflect our modern world.

Because they are more concerned about that than making a good game many times. See the Suicide Squad thread, it's by most accounts a disappointing shitshow of a game, but hey at least we have a fucking queer Mr Freeze! YAY! All sins are forgiven!

And the worst thing is that it won't help them at all. The engagement with their shitty game is still going to be flatlined because no one wants to play a shitty game, queer ass Mr Freeze or no.

Bad licensed games have always existed though

Joke's on you for hyping up a Suicide Squad game of all things

Bad licensed games have always existed, but it was made by a team with a stellar track record that made some of the best licensed games ever. And the joke's not on me, chief — I didn't buy it. Someone else got my money. The joke is most definitely on them.

It's not about being gay, it's the whole range of LGBTQIA+-/#, has nothing to do with some natural representation. Your assumption that it's some natural thing that happens (it being in games more and more) is not true. We've seen all the leaks and internal documents, it's being forced into companies as a requirement to be able to get money, and then forced into dev teams, with DEI dictators being installed in every team to make sure the message is being spread (like at Activision).

It's a big effort of social engineering and nothing that just so happens because being gay has been normalized in a few parts of the world.

I'd love to hear from our finger-wagging Centrists who insist that anti-Woke reactions are just as bad as Woke agenda.

"Guys, guys, I'm just trying to enjoy my black samurai hero getting pegged by the daimyo, how bout we tone down the anti woke screeching?"

edit: oh wait, looks like @teezzy has already chimed in 🤭

Some people call me a contrarian, but i disagree 🥁

I wonder which characters will be race-swapped and sexuality-swapped in Wolverine.

They wouldn't be so retarded as to make Wolverine finger-fuck a dude with his claw or anything like that, but I would bet money on some lesser-known enemy from the comics being turned into a black woman or some shit like that.

Funny how I'm never represented in video games and I don't mind at all. It is all about the character's actions, motivations etc., not their labels or colors that define them.

All that stuff about representation is a consequence of the feminization of western cultures. In psychology, it's know that for men, it's the values and behaviors that make them connect to characters, while women tend to look for group identity and looks.

The writing was on the wall with Spiderman 2018. Rivet and clank killed insomniac completely.

They've been dead a long time and the ratchet remake was the last good thing they'll ever do.

Also Sony are so fucking cucked they won't even give us a resistance hd collection or ratchet future set to remember the good days. They absolutely hate their old games, I think.

Seriously, how could Insomniac get MORE gay? Spiderman 2 could very well be the pinnacle of woke in videogames. I guess they could have Wolverine have a personal crises when he decides he is a woman. He eventually goes crazy when he can't chop his dick off because it keeps growing back. George Floyd then comes down as an angel and tells Wolverine he's perfect the way he is.

I'll still get Wolverine because he was one of my childhood's favorite heroes but I'm done after it with them.

An Angelic visit in wolverine's childhood

What happened to this studio? I used to love their games. Especially ratched and clank. I didn't own ps4 and 5 but back then the output has been great.

And where is Ted price? Since the studio went first party he seems gone. Is he still with insomniac?

They are now a marvel output studio. Fuck that.
