Thread: Tabletop, RPGs, Board games |OT| But mom those aren't toys! They are models!
Official Thread
Quite frankly: you can ignore anything you don't like from the lore and change things around as much as you want, that's the good thing about PnP RPG. In a video game you have to eat the shit they serve you, here you can just cross out a paragraph that is nonsense and move on. There is no RPG police showing up at your house if you stray from the official canon, just pick and choose. But easy for me to say, I've not played DnD in earnest since it was still ADnD ;)
That's why I'm somewhat cautious about Baldur's Gate 3. Everything I've seen about the game Larian has created has me hyped up, but I'm worried the wokesters at WotC may try and force them insert some IdPol bullshit into it. I played through Larian's Divinity Original Sin 2 and the game at least seemed to be free of any sort of SJW crap and I hope they don't cave in here with BG3 and just deliver us a good ol' fashioned rpg.

Finally finished the Biker Librarian I started a couple of months ago.

Got the idea from the Legends rules, which say he can have a Combi Weapon as well as a Force Weapon, so thought it would be cool to build that into the bike itself (although having him drive it without using his hands was also tempting).

Those look really nice. The greys and pinks/purples work really well together.

That colour combination was not originally planned. But when I had the purple complete I noticed that grey carapace (still grey from the primer) works quite well with purple fleshy bits and thus change of plans. Now I'm planning to have a bunch of genestealers painted in a similar manner.

I started playing Carl Chudyk's Innovation with the two oldest kids and w my wife. It's one of those meaty "every card is unique" empire-builders that punches above its weight, at the cost of theme coherency and overall depth. A casual boardgaming fan who played Fluxx would be right at home with Innovation. I realize that I've owned the first expansion, Echoes, for many years but never tried it out. Guess I'll give it a go once we have more games under our belt. I am trying to introduce the kids to more complex cardgames and boardgames and so far they're enjoying the added complexity and depth. Gonna try teaching them Core Worlds and Warhammer Invasion next.

Also taught the kids how to play Kingsburg. I think it's too long for how light it is, but it's fun and teaches a certain style of boardgame that we own a lot of (rotation of seasons, limited turns and action choices).

Have you tried Scythe? I love that game, especially how luck plays almost no role in it. Very fun and incredibly well made game.

Yeah I own it, though I've only played it twice. Any experience with the expansion that expands the board? It's definitely an epic game though it doesn't have as much combat as I expected.

I like economic games so I don't mind the limited combat. When it comes to board expansions I am not aware of any. I only have the airships and the og expansion with the Japanese and Scottish.

Oh yeah I love this book. This is my copy I bought a few years back that set me back almost 100 bucks because I'm mentally retarded.

It always amazes me how little GW leverage Rogue Traders for anything. They're the one faction in 40K with basically limitless game and story potential, and literally what started the whole franchise off, but they're little more than an afterthought, and consigned to side games they don't even bother supporting all that long (despite said games being bloody brilliant most of the time).

Rogue Trader is probably my favorite aspect of Wh40k. Man, I would love an exploration based Rogue Trader video game RPG.

Imagine something like Mass Effect or Star Control but in the 40k setting!

My wife and I are hovering around joining an in person game. I'd love to get invested in a long form campaign, but I'm worried the people we're joining (wife's coworkers) aren't going to be as invested in the roleplaying/storytelling aspect as we'd like. I guess we'll see how it goes.

You mean miniatures campaign? I played one last year and it was pretty meh.

I assume? My wife didn't mention, but it probably is.
It is the easiest, most accessible and action packed edition so far. If you aren't stupid you can get through encounters in minutes. Well anyway, you should discuss your hopes and ideas with the other players and the dungeon master, but honestly if you want the perfect experience then there is no substitute to organizing it yourself.

I've run a couple campaigns on Roll20 and one in person. The issue with DMing then just turns to finding players that match the amount of effort I put in.

Today in "RPG Books I Own But Forgotten About"....

I lost thousands of dollars if old World of Darkness books I owned, but here's one of the few I managed to keep.

IMG-20210608-041512-01.jpg

I think I bought this one when I was in Rhode Island for a cousin's wedding.

To this day, I still love the original World of Darkness. Never cared much for Demon: The Fallen but everything else including Hunter: The Reckoning I loved.

However, my three favorites were Mage: The Ascension, Wraith: The Oblivion and Changeling: The Dreaming.

The book above is a supplement for Changeling.

It details the Inanimae.

During the Age of Myth, everything in the world was born with the capacity to dream, therefore, everything possesses - or possessed - the potential to be alive. Although they world has changed since its beginning and may parts of it have forgotten how to dream, some fugitive elements still remember. These vessels of the Dreaming endure in the hidden corners and secret corners and secret enclaves of the world, remembering as best they can the lost days when every waterfall could talk and every tool was alive. They are the Inanimae, the last children of the Great Slow Empires that now sprawl across the Earth in mute, immobile ruins. Even to most of the changelings, they are a myth too fantastic to have survived.

Basically mannequins and statues and I think even elemental stuff.

Imagine playing a department store mannequin that takes place in the same world Kindred (vampires) exist in. You know that Tremere that feeds at night near the department store you "live" in because you're a fucking mannequin connected to the Dream realm?

The entire setting of oWoD was bloated and got silly but damn, did I ever love it.

Pictures of the plastic Mk VI Beakie/Womble Marines for the new edition of Horus Heresy have leaked.

Supposedly that's also 2 new plastic HQ units, a new Plastic Contemptor and a Plastic Spartan Tank. The Caterphractii are the same old ones though.

Supposedly there's also going to be a plastic Leviathan Dreadnought, Mk II Marine Squad and Sicaran Battle Tank.

Guess it's finally time to start a HH army. Loyalist Emperor's Children/Death Eagles here I come!

This is my recent journey into tcg

I've been buying Pokémon cards for the last 5 years or so for my kid, we have a few hundred cards at least.
Like many others I'm sure, we never actually played the tcg at all.

For what ever reason I take it upon myself to organise the scattered piles and boxes of cards into card sleeves and folders and organise them by type and I put all the evolutions together etc. After about 4 hours I had a full folder of organised Pokémon cards, ready to create decks and do battle.

I learn the rules and challenge my family hoping to get some use out of these cards that have literally just been ignored as soon as they were opened out of the pack.

I manage to get twenty minutes out of my son before he got bored, my wife agrees to play I suspect out of pity.

we had a good time, and as hearthstone players , we (I) wanted to try magic the gathering so I bought 4 packs of 100 mixed magic cards and the bastard on eBay sent me 4 identical packs of 100 cards. I probably ordered the wrong thing but I was pure raging the whole day even after they offered to refund me.

so i google magic cards and my city and see there is a card shop apparently going out of business and they are selling 2 x boxes of magic cards each with 1000 cards, at £10 each. 2000 cards for 1p each. I bought them and they are all random creatures cards and spells from different magic sets going back to the 90's. No lands either.

none of the cards are worth anything more than I paid but to me, what a score. I have 2000 nearly all non duplicates. Was up last night going through my box of 1000 arranging them by color and roughly alphabetically order.

I took a handful of cards aside, and take a random new card each day to add to the collection.

I like the game compared to hearthstone as you can block with minions and cast spells on the opponents turn. I also like how I'm a noob playing with another noob, we aren't going to make op decks like in hearthstone to remain competitive, we are just going to make fun decks and work out the strategies ourselves.

thank you for reading my story about magic the gathering.

If anyone is interested in learning/playing magic the gathering, definitely check out "magic the gathering :arena" for pc/phones. It's hearthstone but magic. It free to play but they desperately want you to spend money. Great way to learn the game.

We have been playing Pokémon TCG like mad mofos back in grade school. Every recess and between lessons we would bust out our decks and play, we definitely played way more than collected and I myself have about 10 playable decks from across the generations. Amazing game, I even started a league when I was in my 1st year of college and by the end of the year it was the biggest in the country. Unfortunately my schedule changed the next year (obviously) so I couldn't continue but it was a hell of a year. I organized a tournament every week with a trivia section to get some points for the tournament and I made these great watermarked pokémon quizzes with different pokémon each week. My last one was the best, it was all about my favorite pokémon Magikarp, just dumb (and some not so dumb) questions about the fish with a huge magikarp watermark as the background. The quizzes were a huge success and everyone was looking forward to them a lot. It was a great year.

When it comes to very rich but also consistent lore, what are some of the better settings?

Now I want to emphasis "rich but consistent lore" here.

For example, D&D has a lot of cool lore but it's very inconsistent. Like Spelljammer, for example. Awesome setting but seems like everything about it beyond second edition was trashed. And there's LOTS of retcons and inconsistencies.

Warhammer 40k on the other hand, has had some retcons and inconsistencies but has otherwise remained consistent.

I'm not sure but I think Battletech is pretty rich and consistent too.

Old World of Darkness had awesome lore and like 40k, a metaplot, but is also all over the place (each new "Supernatural" has an explanation on how things really happened and something I hated about Demon: The Fallen)

How is Pathfinder/Starfinder lore? I know there's some metaplot and lore i.e. how Starfinder is literally the far future of Pathfinder after Pathfinder's world mysteriously disappeared from existence)

Anyways I'm open to hearing about other settings with consistent, rich lore.

My favorites since the 80s and 90s was AD&D 1st and 2nd edition, old World of Darkness - especially Mage, Wraith and Changeling and in the last few years, Warhammer 40k. Even more recently I'm liking Pathfinder and especially Starfinder. The latter really has that Guardians of the Galaxy vibe.

Dune (Frank Herbert only), old Star Wars was pretty decent and consistent. Star Trek though is much like Warhammer 40k, totally inconsistent and contradictory but Star Trek is about characters and the setting comes 2nd while Warhammer is the exact opposite.

I was trying to avoid RPGs based on movies or TV because they're almost never consistent or more so, canon. Star Wars and Star Trek are non-canon. Never had an interest in Dune so I dunno anything in that regards.

I did like the Star Wars RPG though. Otherspace and Darkstryder were amazing campaigns and both KOTOR games were based off the d20 SW RPGs.

The problem is that most TTWG's/RPG's are either short lived or a complete cluster fuck after a couple of editions.

It's kind of miraculous 40K is as consistent as it has been, given things now are mostly recognisable going back to the Rogue Trader days.

Even Games Workshop couldn't manage it twice eirher, Warhammer Fantasy and now Age of Sigma are complete messes lore wise.

Might be worth checking out Infinity mind:

I think my two current favorite tabletop RPGs are Starfinder and 40k Rogue Trader.

Both games are about space exploration. Starfinder is colorful and diverse. By diverse, I mean lots of different themes, weird planets, alien races and monsters in general, etc. It's really got that Guardians of the Galaxy vibe.

Rogue Trader is basically Star Trek if Star Trek took place in the 40k universe. Explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and civilizations and boldly exploit where no mankind has exploited before.

Y'all want to deal with filthy Xenos but have the backing of the Imperium doing so? Go with Rogue Trader. Just don't sexy time with that hot Farseer chick. Plus she's probably already aware of your pick up lines well before you made the attempt.

Starfinder has some new material coming out. One that really interests me is an explorer's manual. I think it's due out this month.

Really wish Rogue Trader would get a new edition and/or some new supplements.

I still believe it's a crime there's never been a Rogue Trader video game. Imagine a Star Control or Mass Effect type of game but in the 40k universe.

Anybody have a basic tutorials for 3d printing figurines? Where to get the files (I'm amenable to paying for them), how to use slicers, etc. I want to get into 3d printing, and figured I might as well get into 40k tabletop as well.

Thinking about going resin.

You can get plenty of files from all over. Trove is very popular this past year, a lot of my friends download stuff from there. You just got to collect, search the web and download anything interesting. Alternatively you can buy them from people that make them like Raging Heroes.

Starfinder is pretty awesome. Been having fun just reading about all the ships and the bestiary. Probably my new favorite RPG along with Warhammer 40k.

If you like space opera science fantasy, you can't go wrong here. It's really got a very Guardians of the Galaxy vibe to it.

Trove has been down for at least a couple of weeks but there's another site I know of that has a decent amount of stuff.

(DM me if you're interested)

Seemingly the Zweihander TTRPG devs got the Trove Twitter shut down and may be responsible for the site as well.

@Torrent of Pork I'll DM you the Trove alternative for now.

Well this is the straw that broke my camels back. Games Workshop are now officially dead to me. The greedy, shameless little cunts won't be seeing a penny more of my money.

What happened? I'm at work and I can't watch youtube. Are they suing Table Top Simulator or something?

edit: I did some research, it is about a fan project that decided to end of its own volition. Don't see a reason to be so mad about it, GW didn't do anything this time around. SODAZ and the Astartes guy both got smacked but this guy just decided to end it himself.

GW have made it clear there is a zero tolerance stance on all fan animations, and are begining to make legal threats against anyone making them.

There's been a few that have been bought out effectively to work on the Warhammer Plus thing, but those that turned it down have let it be known that it was a threat of work with them, or get sued to oblivion.

The video I linked is the If the Emperor had a Text To Speech channel, aka the biggest and most popular 40K fan content of any kind out there, has been going for years, and is responsible for at least thousands of people getting into modern Warhammer (myself included).

I care vastly more about them than I do GW. The fact they are killing off the work of their most ardent fans, that is nothing but free advertising for them, is unconscionable.

There's also rumblings that the next thing they're going after will be the lore channels, which I see no reason to doubt is true.

It's a flat out attack on the fanbase out of short sighted greed and spite, and I am absolutely not able to support them because of it.
