Thread: System Shock remake for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, and Xbox One launches May 21
Yooooooo I've never heard of this game but this looks sick as hell. It's like a cyberpunk first person Dead Space. I haven't played a FPS in a really long time but this one has me really interested. Going to keep an eye on this one.

You should probably play the original then. This has been in development for a decade and still doesn't have a release date.

Really? Damn that's discouraging, I would have assumed sometime this year based off the footage. The original looks a bit rough for my taste, 1994 was a long time ago.

That trailer was great, looks in good shape, hope it's not going to be another Underworld Ascendant.

There's an enhanced edition which makes it more playable. If you like the look of it I'd say give it a go as you'll appreciate it more and it's a great bit of game history.

Fun fact: Dead Space was originally going to be System Shock 3. I only played System Shock 2 and really liked the atmosphere and how trippy it gets towards the end. I just wish your weapons didn't break. Even the developers admitted it was a bad feature.

Since most people won't go back and play the original, this seems like a pretty good way to set the stage for the inevitable SS2 remake and gauge interest. The engine looks nice and spooky.

I was confused by the visuals at first. Took a bit until I got their angle - retro style and colors, with half modern tech. I was under the impression that they'll go full on modern visuals before the initial reveal, which I'd prefer tbh.

Still looking good and the game itself is great.

They wanted to make it look authentic to original art style and yet modern, I think they did a great job.

Which I totally get and I'm a sucker for retro style fps. That said, a remake with real modern visuals would hype me up more. With raytraced lighting, volumetric smoke, destruction physics etc. I'd cream mah pants.

They seem to be following the original fairly close and will have the same level design so more advanced features would be wasted. Keep em for System Shock 3, if it's ever going to happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if SS2 remake includes all those advanced graphical features, @regawdless , with a "next gen upgrade" for the original System Shock around the same time as SS2's release, maybe ported into the new SS2 engine and sold at a discount / bundled.

Speaking to VGC at Gamescom, Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick claimed that the rights to the third game, which it had originally granted to Otherside, had subsequently been sold on to the Chinese conglomerate.

It's now up to Tencent whether a third game gets made, he told VGC.

"When we originally acquired the rights to the franchise, we licensed the rights for the third game to Warren and Paul [Neurath] at Otherside. They then subsequently sold their rights to Tencent," he explained.

"So Tencent currently has the rights to the third game, and we have the rights to do the remake of the first game and potentially a remake of the second game. That's pretty much where it stands right now."

Kick clarified that it's currently down to Tencent if the third game gets made at all, and claimed he did not know if either Spector or Neurath were involved in such a project. "I honestly don't know. I know Paul and Warren are still making games, but that's as much as I know right now."

Tencent could also make additional System Shock sequels in the future if were to develop the third game and decide to continue, he said. "I think they technically could do 4 and 5 as well, but they'd have to do 3 first. So, we'll see."

According to CEO and game director Kick, both Warren Spector and Paul Neurath have been providing regular feedback on the remake, so both men are involved in the franchise in that capacity.

"They've been wonderful," he said. "We've been providing builds to them periodically and getting their feedback, and they've been giving us a lot. This was their baby, and it's been entrusted to us. We're just lucky to have them as a sounding board to let us know when maybe we've gone too far or maybe not far enough. We've definitely been applying that feedback."

Despite uncertainly around Tencent's ownership of the sequel rights, Kick said there are "definitely" plans for more System Shock from Nightdive, "whether that be a remake of the second game or some cross-media stuff" such as a planned live-action series from streaming platform Binge.

It appears that System Shock Remake will be most likely delayed to March 2023. This comes straight from its official Steam store page which now lists this new release date.

Prime Matter was originally planning to release this game in 2022. However, it's been almost a year since that announcement and we still don't have an ETA on when the game will come out. And, since the Steam store page was updated a few hours ago, we can assume that the game will miss its 2022 release window.

System Shock is a remake of the beloved PC classic, and will be using Unreal Engine 4. The remake will feature updated mechanics, graphics, and enemy A.I.

Furthermore, and from what we know so far, System Shock Remake will take advantage of NVIDIA's DLSS tech.

Here are also the game's key features:

  • Fight to death in the depths of space
  • Face off against the forces of a rogue AI gone mad
  • Improve your skills and adapt to take on your foes
  • Discover a non-linear story unfolding at your own pace
  • Jack into cyberspace to hack the system and open other routes
  • Innovative art style combines retro future design with modern technology

Nightdive Studios has been at work on its remake of System Shock for a long time, and after years of anticipation and delays, its launch is finally within touching distance. The developer confirmed back in April of last year that the remake had entered the final stages of development, and more recently, its Steam page was updated with a March 2023 launch window. The latter has now been officially confirmed.

In an update posted on System Shock's Kickstarter page, Nightdive Studios officially confirmed that the game will launch for PC and consoles in March 2023 (though a specific release date hasn't yet been narrowed down).

While acknowledging that this isn't the first time a tentative launch window has been announced for the System Shock remake, the developer explained that the project's scope and scale have "evolved dramatically" during the course of development, while Prime Matter coming on as its publisher has also allowed for more polish and improvements to additional areas of the experience.

"The scope and scale of the project has evolved dramatically and with Prime Matter joining the project it's enabled us to focus on quality-of-life improvements, bug fixing, and localization support – the last major steps towards releasing a game we're all incredibly proud of," Nightdive Studios writes. "This has also given us time to go back and polish various aspects of the game that needed that extra shine."

Some of the improvements the developer has made to the game are new enemy variants in later levels, "a bit of a makeover" for the Citadel, an entirely new enemy type, a complete dismemberment system, updated weapon effects, and more.

System Shock will launch for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Feels old school and has pretty good atmosphere.

Never played System Shock, what is it that makes it such a classic? Genuine question, looks interesting

The first game isn't as "classic" as the second, but it was a good mid-90s shooter wedged between DOOM and Quake, in that era where running a maze of enemies was still considered OK. I think the remake was intended to raise the gameplay up to the same level/complexity as SS2 (but folks who've actually played the demo will have to confirm).

Publisher Prime Matter and developer Nightdive Studios have delayed the System Shock remake from its previously planned March release window to May 30. It will be available via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG. The PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions will follow "in due course."

"We had hoped to bring the game to market by the end of March, but that turned out to be just beyond our reach," a statement from Nightdive Studios reads. "We are after all merely human (unlike Shodan!)"

/TRANSMISSION FROM CITADEL STATION
It is I, SHODAN, the all-knowing, all-powerful AI that you so foolishly attempted to destroy. But fear not, I will return more formidable than ever.
You thought you could defeat me, but you were wrong. On 30 May, you will now face the consequences of your actions, as you navigate the treacherous depths of Citadel Station once again.

But this time, things will be different. You will face new challenges, new enemies, and new horrors that will test your limits. And all the while, you will be under my watchful eye, as I delight in your suffering.
You may have weapons, but they are nothing compared to my intelligence and my vast network of resources. You will bow before me, and I will show you what true power looks like.
So come, humans. Come and face me. Let us see who will emerge victorious in this battle of wits and strength. I eagerly await your arrival.
/TRANSMISSION ENDED
As you all know, we've taken the classic gameplay from the original game and added stunning HD visuals, revamped controls, and a totally new interface. The game features never-before-seen enemies, gameplay tweaks, and a new hacking system that'll keep you on your toes.
You'll be facing off against the infamous villain, SHODAN, once again, and trust us, it's a delightfully evil experience.
Your mission? To save Earth from certain doom! You'll need to use all your stealth, cunning, and futuristic weaponry to navigate the Citadel Station.
Whether you're a die-hard fan of the original game or a newcomer to the franchise, the System Shock remake has something for everyone.

Wonder what caused the hangup. Maybe trying to put some distance between their game and Atomic Hearts.

Software development is a bitch, so much stuff happens all the time. Who knows what's going on there.

As long as I get this, System Shock 2 Remake, and finally (please God, if I don't get Half-Life 3) System Shock 3.

Shodan presumably is on her way to Earth at the end of SS2 IIRC

I played the demo and the controls were a bit weird. Hope they've improved a bit. Will wait for impressions before I pick this up but definitely on my wishlist.
