Thread: Switch 2 announced! (NatetheHate: Nintendo Switch 2 will be announced on Thursday, January 16)
Hype Thread
1. Drop Switch Lite to $150
2. Drop console-Switch entirely
3. Launch Switch 2 at $299
4. Dominate the low end of the market while PC and Xbox and Sony chase the ever-diminishing AAA profits

Why would you drop the most popular way to play Switch?

I feel like I keep seeing people on forums declaring most Switch owners never play their Switch on a TV, but there aren't any numbers to back up such claims. The usage statistics paint a totally different picture. In fact, I don't think Nintendo Switch would be nearly as successful as a handheld-only device. As does-both product it has been a lightning rod.

EDIT: Haven't had enough coffee. I totally misunderstood what you were saying, but I still think that console-Switch is an incredibly enticing product. There will be 10's of millions of late adopters who want a cheaper console-Switch for the Mario Kart's and Party's.

All the ones I'm aware of love Nintendo... they love Pokemon, they love Mario and Sonic, they love Minecraft and Roblox... Switch is incredibly popular with 12-and-unders. I just can't see any reason they won't want Switch 2.
3 of those they play somewhere else. every kid i know who have a switch it's collecting dust after a week. but of course a sale is a sale... (not really if you don't buy games or accessories or subribe online tbh)

Showing a piece of hardware running no new games doesn't show me what the hardware can do.

What it can do will be revealed later and let's be honest, it won't be that impressive anyway. Not that I care because at this point I couldn't care less about the pretty graphics on the other two machines. I still play my 3DS. On my PC I have been playing Fallout 1.

How old are these kids you're talking about? I'm not an educator and am not around so many kids as to have a good barometer on it, but the among our friends' children the Switch seems to be a primary form of entertainment. There are iPads and phones that are fairly popular with the kids, too, but a Nintendo Switch is something these kids bring with them and will even frequently take us up on our offer to let them dock and use our TV while we're playing board games. I get what you're saying about the tablet being able to play Minecraft, Roblox, and Sonic, though. It's not as good of an experience however.

Yeah, when we have family get togethers here, the kids have their choice of what they want to play: PS5, PS4, Series X, Switch, arcade cabinets. It's always Switch. No contest. Although one of them made an account and played Fortnite on my Xbox I discovered.

I never played my Switch in handheld mode. Didn't even try to see if it works in handheld I think.. So if it would be only handheld I would have neber bought it.

Price of 299 I can't see happening too. Would really (positively) surprise me if it happens

You're not wrong. But I don't know if Nintendo wants to have a Switch and Switch 2 next to one another on store shelves.

Would anyone be shocked if BC was just straight BC with no upgrades ? It wouldn't shock me if BC was some sort of Switch 1 lock mode with no upgrades. Even the CPU and GPU would be locked to Switch 1 level.

I just can't imagine Nintendo is going to leave money on the table by porting Switch 1 upgrade games. Like why would you buy BOTW remake when you can play your switch 1 version at 4k 60 FPS with a patch.

I'm sort of expecting something like this. BotW remake, though, is more than a 4K bump. I think where some of us are hopeful is with titles like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 where the FPS and resolution drops can be pretty significant. Offering a patch for games like these would be in good interest. Even offering an upgrade for a fee would be wise.

Them saying MK9 being cross gen kind of makes sense.
And let's not forget that Sony and MS were releasing cross gen games for years after next gen.

Agreed.

i don't know if the kids want one as much these days...

In my experience, they all want them, and they all play them. At least in the 13 and under crowd. And they're not dust collectors. Crank that up to $499 and parents might start having an issue. Hell, $399 might already be an issue. $349 is the most NIntendo has ever charged for a console, and hardly anybody I or my kids know have the OLED version, they have OG mostly, and Lite in some cases.

I am fully expecting this. Even though it'd be easier to have 'upgrades' than in the GC/Wii/U era, they'll probably just go with what they did on those consoles (not to mention VC games by and large)... locked, no upgrades. Plus as you said, I'm sure they want to be able to sell the Super Mario Odyssey Deluxe Remaster for $60 at some point.

So, I have a tentative understanding of Switch 2's OS and backwards compatibility support. It's tentative because it's unsubstantiated until we get a v1.0 of the Switch 2 OS and is primarily speculation. That speculation is Switch 2 is basically Switch 1 OS. Basically. There are new modules, but it is fundamentally a continuation of Switch OS. The expectation is profiles supporting Switch BC on Switch 2. It will be possible to support Switch BC profiles that leverage Switch 2's additional hardware power. As has already been observed via console hacks and mods, simply giving the OG Switch overclocked CPU and RAM automatically boosts in-game performance, so... they would literally need to go out of their way to lock Switch 1 games out of enjoying the benefits of Switch 2 hardware.

Which is a Nintendo thing to do lol. They will go out of their way to lock the hardware.
It wouldn't shock me if you insert a Switch 1 cart the whole system goes into Switch 1 mode and locks everything down.
As far as I remember the Wii didn't do anything for GC games. It was like playing on a GC.
I think if there were enhancements they would have added a little blurb to that slide saying play your Switch 1 games enhanced.
I am sure hackers will find a way to upclock Switch 1 games on Switch 2 but base Switch 2 will most likely lock Switch 1 games to a Switch 1 mode.
Nintendo is not going to leave money on the table and they can re release a ton of games at "4k" and "60fps" to pad out their line up.

Its such a Nintendo thing to downclock their machine and reduce even memory on BC. When you think about it it being BC is already to good to be true and their has to be a catch

A couple of thoughts to keep in consideration, though. Firstly, the Wii was barely more powerful than GameCube. It didn't, itself, support a higher resolution. It was unlike PS1 -> PS2 where there were some very slight enhancements to be had. Playing N64 games on GCN or Wii did, however, support cleaner visuals due to resolution bumps! There is that.

The other consideration is that your virtual console purchases could be enhanced for a modest fee to support the Wii U's enhanced virtual console features. They're not beyond offering upgrade fees.

I do not see them re-releasing all their Switch games for simple frame and resolution bumps. BotW in 4K comes with enhanced textures and lighting effects, from what I've read. It's not a simple new hardware bump for framerates. They feel like they put some work into it. I might even suggest it's closer to Metroid Prime Remastered than PS1 games enhanced. lol

I don't agree, Mario Kart is a system seller. Nintendo believes in their evergreen titles. They will take the possible early low sales to help prop up and an incentive to buy Switch 2.

Unless already announced for Switch 1. The next big games MK, Mario 3D and Zelda won't be cross gen.

I can see either way and DF made both arguments.
Let's not forget Zelda was cross gen on both Wii and Switch. So having big titles be cross gen isn't out of the norm for Nintendo.
And what we saw of MK didn't show anything next gen which could hint at it being cross gen.
IMO it can go either way but it wouldn't shock me if they wanted those 150 million or so Switch 1 players to be able to buy MK9 as well. But then again they would have launched it on OG and then just sold a MK9 deluxe version on Switch 2....

I've never actually understood the collecting dust thing. Isn't that what consoles do? They sit in your living room. You don't take them out for walks like a dog. Every console I own collects dust and I play them constantly

Maybe they just mean that they have 73 copies of this

It's a gaming community cliché at this point to say your Xbox or Switch or PS5 is "collecting dust".

Always makes me laugh to see someone post those magic words.

My other favourite is "the Wii was just two Gamecubes duct taped together" usually pulled out as a coping mechanism for the Wii selling so many units.

Can't wait to see what nonsense comes with the Switch 2.

Those happened with low-selling hardware as the outgoing platforms. In the case of Switch vs Switch 2, you don't want the system with 140+ million consoles being chosen over the new hardware... or so I would think you wouldn't.

I expect 500$ CAD so I guess 400$ u.s

Nintendo's the greediest in the gaming industry, they'll charge big bucks for years for an almost already obsolete console

"Greedy Nintendo" always makes me laugh too.

As if the other big names in the industry, Sony, Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, Warner Bros, Blizzard etc are a gamers best friend just making sure you are getting the best value for money.

Fucksakes guys all we need is a "Zelda and Mario games get an extra point or two from reviewers because it's Nintendo" for the Full House.

I don't usually tend to bite on those comments because I do agree with them to some degree. Nintendo tax is a real thing because they keep their prices up. Then again, I think we see fewer console discounts overall as a result of demand remaining high. Switch has got to be the first Nintendo console to never really go through a price reduction.

Enjoy your full priced hardware and ESPECIALLY software up until the end of its lifecycle. Laugh all you want, they're the greediest

That makes sense though. If demand is high then why bother offering a discount?

It's kind of crazy that people think corporations are putting products on discount because they just love the customers so much they want to give them a bargain.

It's absolutely insane the prices of their games, they almost never go on sale.

As far as console prices, we had ps5s for 400$ during black friday in canada. Yet again nothing from others

Console black friday pricing:

PS5 console (Standard Edition) — $549.99 (regularly $649.99)
PS5 console (Digital Edition) — $479.99 (regularly $579.99)
Nintendo Switch: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle – $399.99 (savings of $100)
Nintendo Switch OLED: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Bundle – $449.99 (savings of $100)

Buuuut nintendo's not greedy, 😅

I will, thanks.

Why would I sit waiting 2, 3, 4 years for new hardware to go on sale?

If I want it then I'd buy it when I want it.

Same if a game I really want to play is launching soon. Why would I wait months just to see if it goes on sale so I can save 20 bucks at best?

Shit goes on sale so the company can squeeze a few extra units out to customers who never really wanted the shit that badly to begin with.

They're selling it same price than launch price (7 years ago) and their games you're lucky if you can get 10-20$ off for them.

Go suck on nintendo's dick all you want, at least you wont have the lawyers coming after you (not another sign of pure greed at all)

So you're telling me that Sony put a discount on the regular PS5 four years after launch to shift some extra units to people who didn't care enough to buy one at any point in the last four years.

Wow. Truly a charitable organisation that looks out for the little guy.

I guess they want to push the PS5 Pro though? How much did that cost on Black Friday?

Are you really trying to justify your Nintendo boner comparing an obsolete 7 years old console to a console that came out last year?

Yeah stop, it's embarassing.
