Thread: Retro Gaming Thread

Very few studios have left as significant a mark on video game history as Id Software. They quite simply, among other achievements, created modern FPS games with titles that had such a monumental impact and laid such solid foundations that they're now recognized as pioneers. And yet, this was anything but predictable, as Id Software started with no reputation and released dozens of forgotten games before finding success. This is the story of one of the most peculiar studios in the world of video games—a studio that would go on to shape some of the industry's greatest trends. It's also the tale of how four extraordinarily talented individuals, brought together by chance, joined forces to leave an indelible mark on video game history.

NYKPOYZX , SXIOPO..The Letters Mason! What do they mean?! The Game Genie - the original famous cheat device that was developed by Codemasters and published/distributed by Galoob and Camerica around the world. It allowed anyone the ability to create their own cheat codes thanks to a simple user interface that promoted discovery to uncover new codes based on modifying existing codes. Many a video has been made about the Game Genie, but I've never understood how these codes were generated in the first place. In today's episode we sit down and figure it all out. Please Enjoy!

Just FYI The Retrotink 4K CE the cheaper model is going on sale tomorrow morning. Might consider picking one up for Xbox/PS2/Gamecube games

Turbo OutRun Reimagined! I mean it when I say it...Turbo OutRun Reimagined is IN MY OPINION the best racing video game ever made in recent memory...arcade or home console! It's just straight up retro gaming perfection in every way possible...and its a fan game made by sk1ds! Seriously this is one of the best Sega games ever made...not made by Sega! It's like OutRun 2 or OutRun 2 SPX...except its just a modern revamp of OutRun and Turbo OutRun

And as of 3/8/2025 Turbo OutRun Reimagined has been updated to 0.5 bringing new features, new modes...and MORE FUN! The Ultimate retro gaming console is on our PC's these days!

Check it out : https://sk1ds.itch.io/outrun-clone

It looks great. I'll try it out later.

Couldn't agree more. Quake does deserve more love. The leap from Doom to quake was momentous at the time. I remember our computer science lab at sixth form would host LAN matches of doom. (Back in the mid to late 90's) Which were fast paced affairs. But when Quake came along. They just felt more realistic and maybe it's overused "epic". I remember feeling like sad at the time that Doom was going to fade into obscurity compared to the amazing leap quake made.(the difference of doom and quake was a whole new dimension as it were, I cannot state how advanced quake felt in comparison to Doom)

Don't get me wrong I love love love doom.
One of my favourite series ever and I'm a diehard Nintendo fanboy.
Frame purist be dammed I have all the available Dooms on my switch plus the two Quake games.
(I really appreciate and love that you get a lot of new maps etc that you can download on the doom classics and two quake. Games.)
The problem with quake is that
Doom always kept to the same look and feel even today when fully 3D it just importantly feels like a Doom game. (It's hard to explain, but it does, it has a style and it refines it it but it's essentially Doom)
Doom 3 is a survival horror but still doom. Doom 64 is still Doom but a more ambient soundtrack and new lighting but it is still doom at the core.
Quake just went through too many "phases/experiments"
I think they should have stuck to the original Quake one style. Quake 2 at the time back in the day didn't feel like a quake game it felt like a generic space marine game. (Not sure if that was a thing back then but I remember playing it in the N64 at a mates house and thinking wtf is this ? It's like they were too scared to make Doom 3D so they made a halfway compromise) what I meant is it didn't feel like a complete ID game it lacked coherence that the problem I think with quake as whole the lack of coherence in design. First one is medieval second space marine. Third tournament death match only but a mixture of out of space and future maribe. 4 was let's be like Halo. today I see Quake 2 is great boomer shooter and they are back in fashion. Yeah baby!! - paraphrasing shaq To quake 2 "I owe you an apology I wasn't familiar with your game"
I remember loving Quake 3 on my Dreamcast due to the online play. The graphics back then looked so great. But I wished it had a single player game. Both quake 2 and 3 to me felt like they were trying to rip off unreal tournament in a way
Quake 4 I didn't like at all I felt it was slow. And felt like a halo rip off to my mind. Which pissed me off because back in the day Doom came along blew everything away, ID then followed up with Quake which did the same (just blowing everything else out the water) it practically creating the 3D FPS.
There simply wouldn't be CoD if not for Quake, seeing as they used the Quake engine to make the early CoD games

(Plus I think Quake helped massively to sell 3D accelerators/graphics cards and I don't think PC gaming would be where is it now without the influence of Quake. )

Then I felt ID just started copying other companies and lost their way. (With the whole drama going on with the two johns etc you can kind of see it Happening progression wise with the products released)

Long winded post I know.
TLDR
Quake needs some modern love. It is time if Doom 3 & 64 can get some hindsight love. Quake deserves it to.
Seeing as the event was called Quake-con and not Doom-con

Thank you for coming to my ted talk. I hope you enjoyed it or not.

I'm typing this on my iPhone so if I make typos and errors that is why. Also I have dyslexic fingers or something.

Quake 2's theme felt like a 3D Doom, what with the invasion of the planet, the sci-fi military theme, and even the mission map that displays between stages. I enjoyed the dimension-hopping in the first game a lot more.

I think Unreal was a lot like the first Quake, a mix of ancient and futuristic. Maybe that's why it got popular.

I've been watching the digital foundry analysis on quake 2 and doom 1 and 2 enhanced. I absolutely love how night dive handle retro games. All the little tricks they do for optimising a port. Also their care and attention to details. I can't program. But I can tell that they love doing what they do because they go that extra mile.

Any other cheap retro ports for the switch that match this ? Is is mostly night dive that do these things ?

I think I figured it out to my my mind why quake 2 doesn't feel quake-ish.

It's the atmospheric sound and sound effects in general. In quake it all sounds meaty, oppressive and dirty.
Here despite the levels being great the moment to moment gameplay fantastic. Somehow the way it sounds is too clean for me it takes me out the game. I can't put my finger on it. Just something makes it feel kinda generic. Quake 2 isn't a bad game at all. In fact it's great. But something about the sound mix.

All I can equate it to is if you watch a film and the image is rough so long as the sound is ok you can tolerate it. For me it's kind of like that.

Oh maybe one other thing call me crazy but I'm sure in Quake when you pick up health etc there is more in game feed back like the screen has an effect and the sound is loud enough to confirm this. In this game I don't get that sense.

Edit- after playing I think I much prefer The sound mix and feedback in quake 2 64

Episode 428 - Some games can give you the wrong impression of a console's strengths, especially if you're not very familiar with the platform you're playing the game on. These are some of those titles.
