Which is good for a horror action game, has to be tense tbh.

Definitely. It's fun for sure. It's mostly the dudes that end up transforming and rushing at you. Not sure if I'm allowed to just dodge away or not. I'm coming from RE Rev 2 so I just need to change up my tactics I guess.

Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake is enjoying the series' largest Steam launch ever by some margin.

The game was released today for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam.

At the time of publishing, the game is being played by 126,717 concurrent players on Steam, according to the independent tracker SteamDB.

For comparison, Resident Evil Village attracted a peak of 106,631 concurrent players on its launch day. Resident Evil 2 remake had a peak of 74,226 concurrent players, and Resident Evil 3 remake peaked at 60,293.

2023's other big horror remake, EA's Dead Space, attracted 30,925 concurrent players on Steam on its launch day.

Warner's Hogwarts Legacy is still this year's biggest Steam launch to date by far, attracting 879,000 concurrent players during the week it was released.

At the time of writing, Resident Evil 4 remake is the seventh most-played game on Steam, and the second most-played game if free-to-play titles are discounted.

Did the first two chapters last night. No real gameplay surprises after having played the demo but still fun. I did like that whole chain element they added to a particular scene.

Still don't like the knife breaking and the blue note missions ruin the flow of the game, yet I am impelled to do them. =S

Regardless of that, I'll be losing a good chunk of my weekend to this game.

PS4: 900p/~45fps With temporal reconstruction

PS4 Pro:

Resolution Mode: 2160p/~30fps With temporal reconstruction

Performance Mode: 1080p/~55fps With temporal reconstruction

PS5:

Resolution Mode: 2160p/~55fps With temporal reconstruction

Performance Mode: Dynamic 2160p/~60fps With temporal reconstruction

- PS5 and PS4 Pro offer 2 display modes: Resolution and Framerate.

- Additionally, PS5 allows to activate Ray-Tracing for reflections and improve some refractions. This feature stands out in the lake area, but later on it becomes anecdotal. I recommend disabling it to gain some FPS.

- The PS5 version has an advantage in almost all graphical settings. Animations, textures, LOD, lighting, shadows, post processing effects, geometry....

- In PS5 it is possible to activate a graphic option that improves the physics of Leon's hair and other characters/animals. However, this option causes integration problems with lighting in certain areas.

- PS4/PS4 Pro remove the shadow casting of some elements and light points (especially indoor lamps). The number of destructible elements or vegetation animation is also limited, among other trimmed details.

- The oldgen versions present some problems in texture loading.

- Loading times are 5 times faster on PS5.

- I recommend disabling chromatic aberration and lens distortion in all versions.

- An option to lock the framerate at 30fps (especially on PS4 versions) would have been nice.

Xbox Series S:

Resolution Mode: 1440p/~40fps With temporal reconstruction

Performance Mode: 1080p/~60fps With temporal reconstruction

Xbox Series X:

Resolution Mode: 2160p/~50fps With temporal reconstruction

Performance Mode: Dynamic 2160p/~60fps With temporal reconstruction

PS5:

Resolution Mode: Dynamic 2160p/~55fps With temporal reconstruction

Performance Mode: Dynamic 2160p/~60fps With temporal reconstruction

PC: 2160p Max Settings | RT ON | RTX 4080 | i9 12900K | 32GB DDR5

- The console versions offer 2 display modes: Resolution and Framerate.

- Xbox Series X offers a higher average resolution over PS5 in both modes due to the fact that Sony's console seems to use more aggressive temporal reconstruction.

- Xbox Series S has lower LOD in both geometry and animations. This is especially noticeable in terrain.

- Additionally, PS5 and Xbox Series X allow you to enable Ray-Tracing for reflections and improve some refractions. This feature stands out in the lake area, but later on it becomes anecdotal. I recommend disabling it to gain some FPS.

- Xbox Series X shows better SSR reflections than PS5.

- Xbox Series S has no option to enable/disable Ray-Tracing. However, it seems that Resolution mode does have some reflections per RT in this version.

- On PS5, Series X and PC it is possible to enable enhanced hair on Leon and other characters/animals. This option causes some lighting glitches in dark areas on consoles, but not on PC.
- Xbox Series S has some texturing issues when changing the display mode. Closing the game usually fixes this problem temporarily while this bug is being fixed.

- No console version is able to maintain 60fps. The most critical moments are at dusk in the rain. PS5 shows better performance in all cases compared to XSX.

- I recommend disabling chromatic aberration and lens distortion in all versions.

- An option to lock the framerate at 30fps would have been nice for those who don't have a VRR display.

I can't remember if it was in the last part of the village, the castle, or the island — but do you guys remember that one area in RE4 that was underground, there was like a lot of sand (or maybe it was hay?) everywhere and it was underground. There were a handful of ladders, it was like an underground mining maze area and one of the chainsaw dudes tried to kill you in that particular area… Anyway I wonder what that area looks like now

On second thought it had to have been the village right? That's the only section with the chainsaw dude with the burlap sack over his head

It's during the castle section. I really love that part though. There's a X Files episode with an underground location that looks a lot like that, I always wonder if they took some influence from that episode.

Interesting how we continue to see lower average res but more steady fps on PS5 compared to the Series X.

I'll never understand why they don't use the additional power of the X to lock it at 60, but instead go for a higher pixel count that will be barely noticeable, but introduce fps dips.

Damn... getting a few crashes in the first areas. I played 30 minutes of the demo and didn't have any issues, so this is a bit worrying. Hopefully updating Nvidia drivers and restarting will help a bit.

I really don't want to turn down any settings, because I'm getting over 100 FPS at 1440p with everything maxxed out and FSR 2 Quality mode. RE2, RE3, and RE8 all ran just fine even going way over the GPU memory budget.

Not too impressed with it graphically on the PS5. Some of the textures are wonky and the overall image quality isn't that great. Game has been fun so far though.

From what I remember, it looks like they were building an underground city or trying to, but it was in the beginning stages. It was the mines, and you got there mine carts, and then it was that area. Wonder what they had in mind? It was Salazar's Castle, who knows what the plan was; that guy was all over the place. Ramón Salazar himself looked pretty ghastly in the original RE4, almost like he was a ghost or wasn't entirely living

I think the lore was they were excavating the Plagas which had been sealed away underground. It was like a tomb that had previously been built and they were blasting their way into it to free the Plagas.

Damn it... installed new drivers, rebooted and I'm still getting frequent occurrences of "FATAL D3D ERROR (25)." I really don't want to turn down the settings, because it runs so well otherwise.

Even tried the DLSS mod, but that didn't help with the crashes.

*sigh* Maybe I'll shelve this until it gets a patch or two and see if that helps things.

Beat the first chapter. I'm liking it so far. Leon moves really weird but I eventually adjusted.

The real question is though....hair strands on or off!?

It's the games fault, happened with the demo as well. Try lowering the texture quality to 2gb or disable RT.

Dropping textures anywhere below 8GB seems to introduce some really muddy looking stuff, so I ended up just disabling RT. It seems like it doesn't affect the lighting/shadows/ambient occlusion in any way, so it's not a huge hit to visual quality, thankfully.

The crashing issue doesn't appear to be just a VRAM issue. I'm still way over budget according to the settings menu, but I get no crashes as long as RT is turned off. To keep RT on and avoid crashes, I needed to drop textures down to 2GB and it just wasn't worth it. Also, I'm seeing reports of people with RTX 3090 cards experiencing the same issue, so it seems like it's more likely some interplay between texture resolution and RT rather than a VRAM budget issue.

Hopefully Capcom can patch it soon.

Yeah I'm not doing that shit. Won't buy until it's fixed. I have enough great games to play that don't crash.

Yea, that sucks. Games are starting to include very expensive 3D techniques in order to push the lighting, shading, etc.. Contact shadows, for example, is a good technique for casting shadows for every single object in the game when the flashlight is on. If you didn't have that, the game would look flat as hell.

This stuff is simply going to cost ms. No getting around it except to get a more powerful card.

The game itself is fantastic. I don't think it's worth the wait just to get more accurate reflections.

Any idea why they dropped the RT global illumination/ambient occlusion from RE8? I thought it looked great, but it appears to have been replaced with the FSR CACAO option, which looks good, but there's definitely some oddly lit areas in this game compared to RE8.
