Thread: Parenting |OT| It's the shit. And vomit.
Official Thread
We got a puppy recently and it feels like I'm reliving the early days all over again. Piss, shit, and barf everywhere, waking me up in the middle of the night, etc. My son turns 21 this year, so I thought these experiences were long gone. At least dogs grow up faster, so maybe only a few more months of this.

Ok so one of my twin daughters found our Rubble from Paw Patrol stuffed animal, and it's her favorite toy. Now, she often plays that she's Rubble.

Guess I have to transition her now.

My BiL's daughter's favorite toy is a Hulk action figure. She doesn't want to be a princess for Halloween, she wants to be Donkey Kong. The in-laws are freaking out. She's 5.

They should start socially transitioning her ASAP to prevent suicide.

Well lads the wife is pregnant. It's our first and super early in the process. Only about 5 weeks and I haven't told any of my family.

I'm super excited as I've always wanted to be a dad. I keep going back and forth as I am terrified.

Anyways had to share the news with some one so figured I'd tell you cunts.

Say a prayer for us that all goes well.

Congrats! It might be a bit of an adjustment at first but they will change your world in no time and you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Congrats! My missus is 5 months pregnant, so I can report on your immediate future: now we know she's a she, and looks all healthy and properly formed, I am now regularly kept awake at night worrying about her and imagining all the horrible ways things could go wrong!

At least it's a change from the late night existential dread over the concept of death I usually have.

But I'm also incredibly excited about the idea of having a daughter. I'm from a big family and my mother used to work as a nanny when I was a kid, so I've more experience than most first time parents at looking after a baby. I know how to hold, change and feed them, which is one less thing to worry about. Mostly at the moment it's catering to the wife's emotional demands and providing reassurances when she has a freak out!

Yeah pregnant women can be... Fun. Mine had some sudden food demands which was funny and of course some drama. Be prepared for a potential postpartum depression of the wife, which can be more challenging than caring about the actual baby lol.

Aye, we've already had a conversation about what to do if she goes mental for a bit after the birth.

She's generally sensible most of the time, very quiet, traditional, outdoorsy and practical, but a lot of her family on her mother's side are full on stereotypically irrational modern women, so we're both aware there's a possibility of her going a bit loony without realising it if hormones get a bit too much.

It's another thing that's keeping me up at night!

Don't say anything until 12 weeks.

Anyone got any good books about fathering? Father was a giant dildo so I'm starting from scratch. Reading as much as I can.

Tbh, books will only help so much, kids need love, attention, patience and a role model.

That said, having a good understanding of how conditioning and reward structures work will help, it's the same for dogs and kids lol. Basic psychology makes sense as well. Also, understanding the basic phases they go through with the characteristics for that phase, helps to support them and to understand what motivates them.

I don't have any specific books, I read a bunch of stuff many years ago and can't remember names or authors. What's also important, take a look at all kinds of typical viruses and illnesses that can affect them, to be able to identify if something is wrong.

I'm already starting to realise how bloody expensive children are.

Obviously as our first kid we need a buggy/pram/stroller/car seat system to take the little lass around places, and bloody hell are those expensive!

A decent one sets you back over a grand, including all the different options, and given that we're going to be travelling around to see family and moving to the other side of the country next year I didn't want to cheap out on it as it will be getting a lot of use, plus we're planning on having at least one more in a couple of years.

Thankfully, like a thrifty Batman, with enough time to prepare I'll always find a bargain, so found this nice little bundle on clearance, with some additional free extras, for 60% off plus cashback with discount codes.

Still set me back 600 quid, but it's got the whole travel set we need, is nice and robust for countryside use, has a good long guarantee that will hold till at least when we plan to have the next one, and will hold value judging by my looking at the second hand market.

But like I say, £600. Bloody daylight robbery.

The desire for safety allows the manufacturers to keep prices high. I wouldn't trust cheap prams/car seats on temu that's for sure.

That's precisely it, there were cheaper options out there, but you can tell there's been corners cut and cheaper materials used when you take a look at them in stores.

The one I got is built like a tank and clearly very well thought out from all the little details and how smoothly everything goes together or folds away.

Also you can absolutely tell it was aimed at the middle classes with the optional coffee cup holder I discovered was included when assembling it. This is 100% for the yummy mummy brigade that are showing off to one another over a pumpkin spice latte.

Still, I can't complain, because unlike the cheaper ones I looked at, this is also designed for tall men in a way that ties in very interestingly with what I've been seeing in data about demographic changes.

The handle bars and adjustments all make this easily the most useable buggy/pram I've found for someone of my excessive 6'6" height, which makes sense when you consider the target audience with the price and marketing materials, because obviously the more fit, genetically healthy and right leaning people are the one's actually having kids amongst the more affluent. This is also backed up by the alternative suspension and wheel lock settings being variable for town use, running and off-roading. This is a product they expect people who are taller than average, not exclusively city dwellers and more likely to be interested in keeping fit to use, and that's not your average danger haired social studies graduate.

Those yummy mummy's are a strange lot. In my suburb I saw one jogging while pushing a baby in the pram. I guess walking with the pram just isn't flashy enough.

Yeah man ... Things can get out of hand quickly. I better not say how much we paid for our first stroller.

Was it as much as a 3090? If it was, I think you need to go look at your steam library, remember all the fun times you have had on PC, and then think about your priorities in life. 😔

My wife and I took our son to see Sonic 3 today. It's the first time we have taken him to the cinema and he did very well, but unfortunately we had to leave before the end of the movie as he was starting to get a bit impatient. For a 2.5 year old, I think that is pretty good. He got a little scared when Shadow first showed up, the movie was quite loud.

They do have a problem with sound design in general with movies these days. I'm pretty sure the 90s movies had less extreme changes between speech and explosions.
The sound design must be done by AI these days.🙄

Yeah. The whole movie seemed overly loud. I thought maybe I was just getting old and yelling at clouds, but now I'm not so sure 🤔

My son was born a month early last week. Wife was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia randomly which led to 36 hours of induced labor. She is a champ and handled it so well. The little dude is now in the NICU but doing great. Hopefully he will come home next week.

I am sitting here next to him while catching up on all the Nintendo salt. It's insane how much personal growth can come in just one week. From the fear of losing my wife to fear of losing my only child.

It really makes the small things in life melt away. I am feeling truly blessed.
