I took a break from Starfield to play this as I wait for the creation kit.

Man, what a beautifully crafted game. You can tell it was made with love. I love the setting, art style, combat and all the callouts and easter eggs. Was not expecting this.

If I could say one thing though, it's that it might be a bit too easy. I had more issues taking out the first puppet of the future you come across at the bottom of the factory, before I knew you could drain it, than any boss so far. I usually take them out in 1-2 tries 3 being the max so far. Just got to Rosa Isabella street but don't know how close I am to the difficulty spike. But even so it's still been a blast exploring the world and taking in the lore. And speaking of blast, those kamikaze puppets are the only cheap enemy I've come across so far.

It's also gorgeous in HDR, however, the native implementation is extremely washed out. If you're on PC and playing on a nice HDR screen do yourself a favor and fix the HDR...

1- Install the windows 11 HDR/SDR fix which is a ICC profile that fixes windows incorrect gamma curve in auto HDR that makes sdr mastered games and other desktop content look washed out. The file and installation instructions are in the link. This alone will make the vast majority of games that have native HDR look WAY better on PC and I think better than xbox since xbox uses the same wrong auto HDR curve for sdr content. Here's a video if it helps.
2- Install Plugin supported Reshade and point it towards your game.
3- Download Majorpainthecactus mod which forces HDR10 through the games engine. This is not a screenspace shader. Unzip the files open the folder and copy paste the contents of the folder right next to the games .exe. I even placed the folder itself in there as well. Only way I could get it to work. Well... I suppose I could do more testing but I didn't want to bother haha. There are two files labeled AutoHDR64.addon and AutoHDR32.addon. The mod will use whichever one matches your operating system, 64-bit or 32. So you can remove the other. Here's a video if it helps.
4- Download Liliums inverse tone mapping mod (the file is labeled Reshade_HDR_Shaders). This works hand in hand with the Majorpainthecactus mod. Majorpain mod forces HDR10 natively, this mod tonemaps it. This also comes with a really nice HDR analysis tool you can enable through reshade. To install this one, open the file, there are some .png files for the analysis tool, copy everything else but those, find the reshade file which should be in the same folder as your games .exe. Open it, there should be two files, shaders and textures, paste what you copied into the shaders file. Then go back and copy the .png files and paste them into the textures file.
5- Before we open the game, make sure you've installed the windows 11 HDR/SDR fix and have that ICC profile enabled. Also, disable Auto HDR but turn HDR on in windows. (Doesn't matter what sdr/hdr brightness you have windows set at but I'd leave it on 80 for desktop content if you fixed the gamma curve earlier, which if you haven't, none of this will mean anything haha.)
6- Now start the game and wait for it to get to the menu. Check to make sure that HDR is off in the games settings. Then, open reshade with the home button. There might be a small tutorial if it's the first time opening Reshade. Click through all of that and then go to the plugins tab and all the way at the bottom you should see the AutoHDR option. This is the Majorpain mod. Enable it, click it's dropdown menu and click that checkbox as well. Everything in game should have a sort of red hue, this is HDR10 without tone mapping. If not, then restart the game, it should now. Don't worry if you see a red message near the top, I have that and mine still works.
7- Now go to the Home tab and find Liliums inverse tone mapping and enable it. Then change the settings so it matches mine. (These settings are for a LG C2 42". You may need to tweak the nits(target brightness) depending on your screens capabilities)

8- You should be all set. If you want to use the analysis tool and compare it to mine... In this order, find liliums hdr analysis tool in the list, right click on it and select move to top. Then do the same for liliums inverse tone mapping. The load order matters so the analysis tool will read whatever is above it. Enable it and then see if it matches mine. It will vary depending on the scene and your TV of course but it should be close. Here's a .jpg screenshot of my analysis tool in game.

And finally here's a public google docs folder with a bunch of .jxr (HDR) screenshots of some locations that I thought showed the highlights and such pretty well. Very minor spoilers. You'll have to download the images and view them in windows photos. Which won't match native since when in game it's using HDR10 through Reshade which controls things natively and when we're on desktop it's just the windows ICC and your TV settings but since you fixed the gamma curve it will be close.

Compared to Souls/Bloodborne, the game was mostly lacking in terms of level design, it just wasn't very interesting for the most part. But Chapter 11 has been great, so much verticality, many shortcuts, all the good stuff. Peak Souls tbh.

I'm on the other side on this one. I loathe chapter 11. Pre-Laxasia, it was already going on and on. And there was one or two spots where it was like a bit of a maze which I also hate. Just knocked Laxasia on her ass FINALLY and I'm fully expecting minimal traversal before the next boss, especially for how big of a pain she was. Nope, now I find there's a whole other mess of Arche Abbey I need to make my way through before I get to him. Arche Abbey is just a drag and it's kinda bringing this down for me.

This shit.

It works in Sekiro because you can break stance quickly. But in Lies of P, perfect blocking barely breaks their stance. Result is that you can perfect block a lot but still feel like you've barely made any progress.

Yeah I can see this. I've just come to terms that LoP is a different game so the stance break is different. It does seem like you need to p-guard a stupid amount before you break stance in this game but I'm actually somewhat ok with this as far as the bosses go. I was on Laxasia so long that I was able to p-guard her first phase in my sleep (and ended first phase a couple times by breaking her weapon). But to do that, I swear I had to p-guard her like 100+ times.

One thing I didn't notice is different weapons will break them faster. Again, with Laxasia, I was using TDS the first night I was trying to beat her and it was taking forever to break stance. When I finally got tired of her shit, I changed to the trident and my p-guards broke her significantly faster than TDS. I knew when you attacked with a heavier weapon, it would increase stagger faster but I didn't realize the same went for p-guards.

The first boss was a pain in the ass and I only managed to beat him when I decided to try to parry and break his stance. Took me like 10 tries. Fucking hate parrying.

Not a fan at all of the delayed animations. They make no sense and are there just to frustrate.

Exploring the first area after the hotel, now.

I haven't played since we last played, but I'm still willing to put the belt on the line!

So, I beat the second boss (Scrapped Watchman) on my first try (with summon, I'm not made of time).

I am warming up to the game. Trying to learn to parry and all that jazz. I would have liked a few small changes (mostly to do with how the character handles), but yeah, so far it looks like it will be a decent game.

Playing it on Game Pass and I have to shut down Steam, otherwise my controller won't work properly. What a weird bug.

It might not actually be a bug depending on how you use your controller. I control my whole PC with a Duel Sense via Steam, optionally. So it's always converting my controller signals. Both in game and out of game. I'm sure you can change your settings if you don't want that functionality and so won't need to close Steam (then it will only convert signal in Steam games, or no converting if your natively using an xinput controller like an Xbox one).

It's a bug, other people are having the same issue.

So if I press X on my controller and Steam coverts that to "enter" say on a keyboard, and you play a game on Gamepass where "X" means "X" how does your PC know which action to take unless you disable the option in Steam (or turn Steam off).

Sure other people aren't having just the same conflict? I had to turn Steam off when I played a Battle net game IIRC.

Macho Man Randy Bane was awesome. The entire time I was thinking of Skyrim.

It also occurred to me the other day that I really want a rythm based souls-like that isn't a shooter. Something like each enemy has their own rhythm and timing. And if other enemies join, their beat mixes and they change their movements and rhythm to work together.

I downed Fuoco on my first try this morning. Just reached the Cathedral.

Starting to agree with the consensus here. This is shaping up to be a great game.

Interestingly, the most difficult fight so far has been the opening boss.

Well, Fallen Archbishop is the new cunt in town. I died maybe 20 times so far. I killed the first form in my first try and then I saw there is a second stage and I groaned.

The second stage is terrible. You can't lock on the target, as it is impossible to follow. DS had stuff like that, but allowed you to lock on multiple targets on the same massive boss, to avoid fighting the camera.

Oh and the laser beam...? GTFO

Phase 2 of Nameless is kicking my ass right now. Dudes just insanely fast. And you can't even tell what's going on onscreen because of all the stupid effects.

Green Monster of the Swamp is a pain in the ass. The second phase is kinda bad and he has way too much HP.

I know I'm about 70% until the end and I have to admit this is probably the best DS clone ever made. Mechanically, atmosphere, world, bosses, weapons etc, it is superb. I would say it copies almost everything from FromSoft, though and the world does not have the interconnectivity of DS1 and it is pretty much linear.

But, I am shocked this has been created by a studio with a single game to their name prior to this. I hope they get a chance to make a second P game and expand uppon what they've created, they really deserve it.

Really not enjoying the swamp monster fight. Two dozen times now and I can't get him under half his health bar of the second phase.

I know you beat him now, but are you using grindstones/arms to their full capabilities? I think all the bosses (up to that point at least) are weak to elements/status effects and it's pretty simple to guess and be correct. If it's a robot, use electric. If it bleeds, use fire. It adds a decent amount of extra damage to every attack, and setting an enemy on fire will do steady damage output for awhile.
