Thread: Jeff Gerstmann is leaving Giant Bomb
Lol, as if the site couldn't be any more dead, now one of the co-founders is leaving. I wonder if Red Ventures had a big hand in this and Jeff didn't like the direction they were pulling in.

Be even more hilarious if he joins Nextlander and gets back with Vinny, Brad and Alex.

I never heard of these guys until 2021 besides in review sections in gaming magazines where they'd have their score posted for certain games. What is Giant Bomb like? Just a handful of passionate gamers who created a network of like reviewers, forums, and other content?

Too late now, everyone is gone. You had to be there.

Stopped paying attention completely a few years ago, but still somehow sad to hear this. Jeff Gerstmann *is* Giant Bomb. Or rather, there is no Giant Bomb without Jeff Gerstmann.

Sure it's been mostly downhill since Ryan's passing, but Jeff did keep some semblance of continuity. Without him, it's completely done.

I never really watched or listened to it. I did check out their first look coverage of PSVR before it launched. I came away finding it entertaining to watch a bunch of middle-aged men being unable to figure out a new technology, and it was fun enough, but it didn't leave me with the impression that the crew had knowledgeable opinions or anything.

They probably do, just saying that the few times I had tuned in didn't hook me. And then when they started chasing WokeBucks, there was a 0% chance I would ever watch or listen again.

Well that was predictable. I'm guessing that when the "restructuring" happened and Brad, Vinnie and Alex left, Jeff had a contract to stay as a reassuring figure to fans and to oversee the transition.

He always seemed like the kind of dude that liked things coming to a natural end, and the natural end for GB was right before Abby and Ben joined.

A site based around personality where nobody left has a personality
There's literally zero strong personalities on the podcast. Jan is incredibly safe and boring, Jason should prioritise his health and never offers much beyond a crumb of fighting game knowledge. Jess is obnoxious and can't help but talk over everyone else and Bakalar would rather be anywhere else talking about pinball or hockey, his two actual passions.

I used to listen to it religiously back in the day as it was engaging (though the GFWL Podcast is still GOAT), but things definitely went downhill after Ryan died. Honestly, I've never been a massive fan of Jeff as a reviewer though, as he wouldn't know good writing if it bit him on the ass (I remember him demonstrating more than once that his cultural knowledge outside of gaming is disturbingly limited), and he seems to have given over to subscribing wholesale to whatever the Waypoint Crew guys opine on all matters, though admittedly I stopped giving him the time of the day a while back tbh.

It was fun for a time, but all things change. Good luck with his family.

GB died with the hiring of Abby and Ben. Those two were insufferable and killed interest I had. I do listen to the Nextlander podcast. Vinny, Brad and Alex.

Stopped caring about game journalism when videos and forums allowed to assess the quality of a game better than said journalism.
Gaming journalism, gaming stuff in general be based on personalities, isn't for me.

Pretty much exactly what I was about to write.

I actually liked to listen to GB up until that point. They were a good crazy bunch of fun dudes.

Lol, if anyone just watched their "comedy" bit on Twitch, which addressed nothing about Gerstmann, then the only good news is that Dan is back. Other than that, sheer cowardice and not even a mention of Jeff.

Shambles.

I haven't paid attention to Giant Bomb in years. It's been on a slow death spiral since Ryan passed away unfortunately.

It went from a website I frequented to a podcast I listened to the day it dropped, to a podcast I listened to occasionally, to a podcast I listened to for the game of the year deliberations, to finally a podcast I stopped listening to entirely.

Lol, what the fuck? Did the people who acquired Giant Bomb bring back Dan and push out Jeff (or basically let him know he wouldn't be in charge in anymore, leading to him leaving on his own)?

Honestly, I might give this new crew a chance. It won't be "Giant Bomb" as I once knew it, but I got sick of the old crew after Jeff, Brad, Alex, and Vinny all got dour and jaded about games and seemed more interested in lamenting about politics and trying to prove how woke they were for aging white men.

At least this new "core crew" seems to have some enthusiasm. We'll see if they can make anything interesting.

Oh god. Thankfully I stopped listening before this. That sounds insufferable.

Oh, Jesus, didn't know he was a Covidian. Dude is now rambling on about how he continues to wear a mask and "feels kinship" with those who also do despite the lack of a mandate and how fearful he is for his children who "can't get vaccinated." Yeah, I think I've seen about enough of this.

Doesn't seem as though the split was very amicable given the rushed nature of his departure and the lack of communication surrounding it from both Giant Bomb/Red Ventures and Jeff himself.

What the fuck is going on here? I love Dan but no way I'm watching GB again. Did he get fired from WWE or something?

This video here legit has more enthusiasm and creativity than from what i've seen of Giant Bomb in years tbh

I didn't laugh or anything, but its nice to see some young "talent" actually enthusiastic about creating content again

Heck, even Gerstmann seems somewhat excited again

I'll give everything a fair chance

ALSO GODDAMN JASON IS ON DEATH'S DOOR WTF HAPPENED LMAO

haven't listened to GB in years now (at least since Abby and Ben fucking destroyed it), I've always like Jeff since his tastes aligned significantly with mine. But it's such a bummer to learned that he's a Covidian. Man, some people really got fucked in the head the last two years.
