Watched The Black Phone this weekend.

It wasn't terrible. The performances were great (the kids, the grabber, the alcoholic abusive dad)

But if you're looking for something else to watch on Peacock, they have Attack of the Killer Donuts...a guilty pleasure of mine.

Just subbed back to Shudder for the first time in a while. Hope to find some good ones on there that I've not seen yet. Any decent Shudder originals that have come out in the past year or so?
Watcher is a new one that is great, Host is a bit older but to me is one of the scariest movies in recent years. Everything Joe Bob is worth watching. Freeway is an underrated 90's classic that recently got added. There's a new Gwar documentary. The In search of Darkness doc's are great. Holliston S1 and 2 is the greatest horror sitcom ever. Intruder is the greatest supermarket slasher ever. V/H/S 94 is another good original

V/H/S

Watched it for the first time on Halloween just a few weeks ago. Excellent watch, I liked it enough to go ahead and watch V/H/S/2 an hour or so later, which is something I never do

It's an anthology, and I'm a big fan of these kinds of horror films when done right. And re-tracing all the scenes in my mind right now, this movie was definitely "done right"

I liked all the segments a lot, but the one in the beginning, "Amateur Night" All I have to say is wow, and that I hope whoever's reading this will give the film a try and take the time to sit back and enjoy it. I thought that was the highlight of the movie. In all, there were like six shorts. All of them were pretty good, but "Amateur Night" was outstanding. If I'm to rank them in order from my favorite to the least of my favorites then it would probably be this order:

1) Amateur Night
2) 10/31/98
3) Second Honeymoon
4) Tape 56
5) The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger
6) Tuesday the 17th

They all offer something completely unique and I enjoyed them all. Even sixth on my list is pretty good, some of them have twists you would not expect, and there's no way you could expect them unless someone spoiled it. Some good twists in V/H/S. For its meager budget of like $240,000 or whatever it was, the film is very strong and creative. Well done all the way through and these are some very twisted and fucked stories as you'll see. These guys did something great, and this all started a franchise thanks to their work. I've seen the first two, and there are like two or three more 'main' ones that seem to be tied to this universe? Or maybe they all are? But there are like idk a fucking dozen or so of these VHS movies but as far as I can tell, maybe five or six of them were put in the hands of the big boys

9.3/10
Terror Lvls = 45/100

And I'll say this, the overall theme of V/H/S is spectacular. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll put the rest in spoiler tags, but I love what they did with the premise that sits around these tapes

I guess I'm just a big fan of how they went about it, but having all these fucked up tapes, being hoarded by some sick fuck with Lord knows what kind of fucked up things going on in his own life? Thought it was a very strong idea. Cuz like that old fucker who supposedly kicked the bucket in the chair, something eventually happened with his corpse or his body. We don't know what. But all these tapes, painting such a vile and grim reality filled with the sick and twisted, the unknown, the scheming… It's a lot of different looks at once and it gives the audience the outlook of "this is what's out there" and I thought that was interesting. Like the setup of V/H/S and the lore surrounding these tapes and where they came from, the sick fuck who's hoarding them and the story around that particular character, there's a lot going on in this horror film. Like you got some hardened criminals breaking into a house, but then the thug sitting down and watching all this shit on tape is practically a baby in comparison to all this hardcore fucked up shit that he's witnessing others do to their victims… It's just a lot to take in and it's great

Intense trailer below, gives a glimpse of what to expect; thematic spoilers in it

V/H/S/2

Watched this a little later in the night during Halloween and it was very entertaining. The sound effects and editing are a decent jump up from what we experience in the first movie. Many fans online were praising "Safe Haven" the most and calling it the best segment of the film, but I felt like it was the most predictable and most drawn out of all the shorts. Only the last four or five minutes in "Safe Haven" get the nod from me, didn't really enjoy the build up to that one

The other four shorts are excellent, although "A Ride In The Park" could have thrown something a little more substantial at the audience to leave a lasting impression. It keeps your attention all the way through, easily it does, but it's a steady thrill here with "A Ride In The Park" without any sharp spikes or climbs. Definitely entertaining, it goes by fairly quickly. Critics were also praising this section of the film heavily, but I'll only say that it's solid and worthy of standing with the rest; wouldn't call it a standout among the bunch or anything. Maybe if went out with a serious bang before it concluded or left us wondering a bit more it could have stood strongly with the others but it was missing something imo

It was "Tape 49" as well as "Phase l Clinical Trials" and especially "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" that carried this film and made it great. I could commend those shorts from all angles. In order this is my ranking of the tapes:

1) Slumber Party Alien Abduction
2) Phase I Clinical Trials
3) Tape 49
4) A Ride In The Park
5) Safe Haven

And to anyone reading this, whether you've watched V/H/S/2 or not, I would recommend watching this vid below. It's the entire short from the movie V/H/S/2, "Slumber Party Alien Abduction" and it's well worth the watch if you're a horror fan. Greatest part of the movie, by a country mile. Jason Eisener knocks this one out of the park. He has an upcoming horror film called "Kids vs. Aliens" that's poised to release in theaters everywhere in 2023 and that movie was made possible because of his brilliant work in the Slumber Party Alien Abduction. Tens years later he follows up with a spinoff and I'll bet it's be a must see

It was something like he had two weeks to get it all ready for V/H/S/2 and hand it over so he went to his old hometown and filmed it at his parents' place and even had his family dog star in the film. Shot it in like 4 days and had it ready for them shortly after that. But it's crazy because there's in a scene in one that sort of reflects the lore behind an infamous UFO incident in Nova Scotia. You could call it Canada's "Roswell New Mexico" mystery because it's about on that level if not even stranger... but anyway it took place on October 4, 1967 and a few scenes in Slumber Party Alien Abduction sort of build its twist on that entire ordeal. Thought that was interesting

Overall score for V/H/S/2 is about an 8.9/10
Terror Lvls = 50/100

Watched V/H/S/ Viral which is the third V/H/S movie in the franchise. I knew going in that it was going to be mediocre at its absolute best moments, based on the low scores but decided to check it out anyway

Overall = 2.6/10
Terror lvls = 4/100

This entry is almost totally skippable. I still wanted to see what the film had to offer though. And tbh, it had the base going for it, like the ideas for each segment weren't bad at all. In fact, most of them could have been great but the directors, writers, and especially the actors—they all sort of dropped the ball

Vicious Circles: There was some intrigue to it in the beginning, but it fades. The ending to this short wasn't tied together well, and it was the recurring as well as the longest part of the movie so it should have been way more entertaining or at least shocking. Nothing was explained well in the end. Pretty dumb and thoughtless of them to butcher the main segment of their film

Dante the Great: I liked the specific item involved in this story. But the execution here was not strong imo. It was okay, I just didn't like the main character. The writing within the movie is strongest with this segment, but that's not saying much, the entire movie is very poor

Parallel Monsters: The best story of the bunch. Attention is held strongly during these moments and what's given is pretty good

Bonestorm: I like the concept, but again the execution was poor. The acting here is also very flat. It's not very difficult to imitate skaters, so I'm kind of at a loss for words here as to why the dialogue was so poor and boring with these two skaters. There was a lot of action and gore once the skaters reached TJ, but I feel like if the characters and their acting was better then the director could have gotten more out of the action scenes just from that alone

Gorgeous Vortex: Wasn't included in the standard version I watched so I didn't watch. Maybe later I'll check it out

All things considered, it's probably a film you'd skip even if you love these kinds of anthology horror movies. Or maybe play it in the background while you're doing something else and see what catches your attention. Mainly because this film isn't well executed. Nothing really sticks, nothing is cohesive. It's essentially a complete failure if we're to compare it to the previous two V/H/S films

Have to rewatch vhs 1 and 2 again. They are both awesome. Everything after is absolut dogshit and not worth watching. Isn't there another one svhs or something like that. Wasn't viral the last one?

The first and second are great. Viral is the third and it's not very good, but there are more to watch

V/H/S/94 released in 2021
V/H/S/99 released this year 2022

I'm not sure how good they are but from the little I have heard, they're worth watching

Hell House LLC 3: Lake of Fire

Great finish to the trilogy. I actually made a mistake here and watched this thinking it was the second film in the series, so I accidentally skipped over Hell House LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel and watched this in its place lol. But it didn't matter much, the first film did enough to illustrate how dangerous and frightening of a place this house is

Liked the cast a lot here, not as great as the first movie's crew but there was some good chemistry here with the new cast. Great story pieced together little by little, which surprised me. All things considered, I liked this one a lot. It was entertaining the entire way through, enjoyed the ending and how it turned out. Always a good thing when the ending has you questioning things some and wondering what happened. I wish more horror films were like Hell House LLC 3 and took the time to add some story bits that make sense and add up at the end

Kind of light on the horror elements that will scare an audience but overall this is a great watch. I'll have to check out the second Hell House LLC movie next and see what I missed

What could have brought this movie up in rank is if there were more tense moments like the dare scene. It would have also been better if the dark ghouls rushing out from the gate of hell and killing everyone inside the house were more fearsome. The costume was essentially a black cloak and nothing more, they looked very cheap when they flooded the house and went about their murdering. Should have at least had some with a demonic look to them or a hellish-looking face, chanting something, screaming shrilly as they floated to their victims, something... Those are my only two suggestions

Watched Barbarian several days ago because someone had recommended it irl, ended up being very disappointed. I wrote a review of it but honestly looking it over... nothing but criticism the entire way through. Beginning of the film was good, but then it's mediocrity the entire way through. Seen a lot of bad horror films, a handful of mediocre ones, and plenty of great watches when it comes the this genre but Barbarian is probably the only film I've seen where there was zero risk taken; from any angle. It's like they dared not to even think of taking a risk... nothing original about this movie (rating = 4/10)

Barbarian is the movie equivalent of taking raw hamburger out from the fridge, putting it on a plate, and microwaving it. No seasoning, no methods, no anything - it's just off-putting and it's there and what's been done has been done. Nobody should touch it unless they wish to waster their time or their appetite for something ridiculously bland and underdeveloped. It's like some idiot got a piece of paper and made an "idea tree" to brainstorm the story and plot, made the base of the tree a few branches and someone snatched the paper and said this is perfect this is all we need let's do exactly this

I don't expect good stories in horror films, but this is easily the least developed story and plot I've ever come across, it's laughable how bad it is. Zack Creggar is both the director and writer of Barbarian, so if I see his name in any other works I'll be sure to lower expectations down to zero just to be sure. Fucking ridiculously low bar set here and another reason to NOT trust modern and mainstream reviewing sites to accurately rate a movie

Antlers

Average. It's disappointing because it could have been great, but it never dared to do or show anything truly terrifying. There wasn't a single point in the film that caused any terror. Which is odd, because it had a slightly spooky atmosphere throughout the entire film. Mines, Abandoned House, Woods, School, Hospital, Dispirited House with bad memories, Mines again. Yet nothing terrifying came from any of those settings. They did next to nothing with any of those areas even though they looked great when shown. Very uneventful. Even the deaths were kind of tame. It's more or less, just a sad and unfortunate story. I can see why it's mostly labeled as Thriller and barely given the nod for a horror film. Those who categorized it finally gave fans an accurate read of what to expect here. Decent acting and the mood was promising, the tone and atmosphere were alright but Antlers played it safe. It's entertaining thanks to the cast. It's well shot and looks great. The story and its plot is not enough, however. No real risks were taken, nothing creative happened in terms of events. But it was worth a watch. I'm not upset about having watched the entire thing, not at all. Can't help but feel that there was a lot of potential here to have something genuinely frightening take place with the evil spirit and its victims but that never came to be

All Hallows' Eve

Decent work, especially for such a limited budget and Damien Leone's directorial debut. There were times when the actresses had poor acting, just moments at a time, that was my only gripe. The second skit had a woman who put just a little bit "too much" energy into her initial phone call with a friend (while unpacking) but it makes sense in a way I guess... she was starting a new life away from the city and everything was to her liking almost in the new place. Second skit could have been stronger

It's kind of an unpleasant feeling, an uneasy feeling; the movie begins as Halloween night is winding down. Two kids enjoying their candy after going Trick Or Treating for a time, them and their babysitter. All Hallows' Eve does what most major motion picture horror film directors are afraid to do and that's create traumatizing mayhem throughout and show gruesome, twisted murders as they take place. That's mostly what horror is about but so many are afraid to get their hands dirty and cross a certain line. Art the Clown is actually somewhat terrifying as a villain. Viewers who pay attention can see that this is no ordinary clown. It's almost like he can time travel or some shit, or that he exists in a different dimension and can enter ours. Maybe. But Art the Clown has tricks, and is one of the cruelest villains I've seen in while

Not sure if All Hallows' Eve 2 is better, but I hear the Terrifier films are

The first Hell House LLC is great, it sets the tone and builds the foundation. Its sequel, HH LLC 2: The Abaddon Hotel, gets straight to it. Builds for a tiny bit and then things quickly start to go South for many victims…

I like this series. Each of the three are outstanding in their own ways. This second HH LLC film is great because it dives into the action fairly early and sustains it for quite a while. Spookiest of the three by far if you ask me

The DP was more on point in this one than the first imo. Haunted House moments shine more here than in the first or third

@Explosive Zombie any hidden gems on Tubi that you've seen? They offer 1,000 free horror films and the latter half of 500-1000 are some that are fairly obscure. If you ever get a chance to sift through what they got let us know man, I'd be willing to check out those with EZ stamp of approval

Haven't done much horror recently even thought it mostly the only kind of movies I put on.

In The Mouth of Madness - It certainly was

Renfield - Fun one. Cage is always good in my book. Pretty ridiculous.

Malum - Definitely decent. Not sure I'd prefer it over Last Shift, though.

It's an anthology, has its moments but they're fleeting and nowhere close to great or even being good for that matter… For a film that runs 1 hrs 50 minutes, this falls extremely flat. There are seven shorts in total. Patient Seven gets a 2/10 from me

All segments rated:

Just a note... I used a third party site to look up what was on Tubi (Tubi itself doesn't list much on their website for some reason) and when I thought "hey, why Maniac Cop 3 and not the other two?" I decided to use the search on Tubi and... got the other two... so then I went through some of my favorite horror movies testing them in the search and finding 90% of them... eventually it became too daunting to search every Horror movie I've ever loved on Tubi, so I gave up

Much better than the first movie, which was a complete bust and was only worth anything because of the chubby little bro. It's your standard slasher and pays decent homage to the ones in the past. Entertaining and isn't cringe city like the first, but it's only good enough for a watch. Didn't really think about it much if at all after it was finished. The overarching lore of Shadyside and Sarah Fier is nice to have but it's extremely shallow. I'll rate Fear Street Part 2 fairly since it did not waste time and did what it needed to do to entertain its viewers. Just a fun revisiting of classic slashers, it's not very intense or even remotely frightening but the summer camp setting is nice and the characters are way better than those in the first Fear Street movie

Slow build, and towards the end is the payoff. It's worth it, the director almost nailed the finish but not quite. Was feeling uneasy, nervous, shallow breaths and even found myself holding my breath for a moment or so. Loved the visuals, characters were solid, the tale of this movie's main character's disappearance becomes something of a must-see once Dutch Marich becomes serious and begins to really step on the pedal. Intimidating end portion of the film, except imo there was one thing that kind of killed it from being truly horrifying. Still really good though. I'd even call it great for how well it captured fear towards the end

Takes place in Nevada and it's based on a true event there; the disappearance of Kenny Veach

This one was tense. Simultaneously the most frightening and unsettling horror movie I've seen since Last Shift. But Last Shift was due much to the sound in the movie, while Horror in the High Desert 2: Minerva has much more going for it

Can't say that it was executed to perfection, but this is an interesting one. Dutch Marich offers a "less is more" approach when it comes to the evil and mystery that is haunting / disturbing this rural stretch

Overall, a tiny bit disjointed as the best part of the movie is the first half or even two thirds of the film. Not to say that the ending was bad, but the Minerva segment was intimidating to witness and the last part slightly tapers down from what was shown in the previous case

I like what was built here, with the story and how a lot was left for fans' imagination to run wild. The writing is simple but Dutch has great vision and can make things happen. Can't wait to see what happens in the third Horror in the High Desert when that dude decides to take his 30 day trip to Nevada

Not bad, but it's also not very good in a lot of instances. There was potential here; setting in the woods, supernatural elements, takes place a few days before Halloween and on Halloween, cinematography was pretty cool. In the end, I can't justify rating this over a 5/10 though, the director could have tightened everything up and had a much better film under his belt

The acting was really bad, but I never expect much there and this was the directors debut film but still the actors were not good. The story is alright but the script is sloppily written at times. Colin Adams-Toomey is basically screaming the plot twist in the ears of the viewers with what one of the main character says. Can't tell if this movie was intended entirely for kids or not because in the beginning and middle, one of the main characters has lines that gives the mystery and most of the twist away. The story is still kinda nice, but sloppy scriptwriting and amateur acting and the delivery of certain lines greatly hinders its effectiveness

Setting was alright. Enjoyed the cinematography. Surprisingly, there were some tense moments that kind of delivered. Rare for any horror movie to have that aspect going for it if I'm to be honest here. Sound effects could have been a little bit better and that would have helped the ending out a bit more as well but it was an okay ending. As referenced earlier, the ending was mostly spoiled by the writing, obvious lines said and the acting — it's just that the details of it all weren't given. So essentially half or more of the twist was given up very early on, makes zero sense to do that in this genre so I'm a little thrown off by Toomey's decision to harm his own story…

Thought it'd be a decent watch, and it pretty much was, but quality control could have been much better. Kinda reminded me of Pete & Pete or a movie that Nickelodeon might've played in the Fall back in the day

Rating: 4.5/10
Scare Factor: 20/100

think i might see this this weekend here

never even heard of it before today

A friend of my wife's, from her horror movie fan circle, saw a preview screening, and was quite enthusiastic about it.

Guy's a bigger anti woke absolutist than half the people here too, and had no complaints about any leftist nonsense, so seems to be just a solid horror with no ulterior motives.

Kind of depressing how bad things have got these days, where my first thought at seeing any minority actor, and especially actress, in a prominent role is "are they a diversity hire?" and assume they're going to be doing a bad job just based on appearance.

That's good to hear about Talk to me. I've had my eye on that one since watching a horror trailer compilation on YT a few months back.

Please report back as well @teezzy and let us know how you found it 👍

And on the subject of diversity hires..

I watched the new Insidious last night. It was decent. I quite like the franchise as far as mainstream horror goes. The Mrs said it was boring and the worst film ever. She loves horror but prefers a faster pace. I very much like to absorb the mood and tension from horror movies and don't mind a slower pace. I loved Hereditary for this as another example and the Mrs despised it. So we do differ a bit with our favourite horrors. I think Insidious is worth a watch.

Oh my God I just thought of the new insidious when they were talking about diversity hires because all of a sudden there's a black girlfriend in everything and then at the end of the credits I saw some diversity equity inclusion crap advertised as something they adhered to

Eh, the black chick in Insidious was perfectly fine. She was a student at an American University, so made sense to be there, acted as a standard slightly awkward love interest, was portrayed as an unpopular nerd and wasn't particularly competent, acting more as a damsel in distress than anything.

All in all a decent movie IMO. Solid 7 out of 10.

If you watch as many movies as me you might get sick of every couple being interracial now, tho. I did enjoy the movie enough, tho. Just saw another 2023 horror last night called "There's Something Wrong with the Children" and it's two couples who are friends, one a white guy and a black girl, the other a spanish guy and a white girl (second one has the kids). It's just this absurd funhouse mirror version of reality where 50% of everyone is non-white.
