Strong serial killer movie, Rob Zombie has almost perfected these kinds of characters. Wildly entertaining but like all have said before, he pulls inspiration from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and his work just isn't on that level and there's never a fightful scene. If you and your wife don the last name 'Zombie' and can't come up with anything that scares the audience then something's missing. Solid cast and great scenes and performances from a few, but again this is 7/10 material the way I see it

The characters are cruel, flamboyant, and on the run in this movie but nothing else stands out much. I was reading some comments elsewhere from fans and some dude said this was his favorite Horror film which surprised me. I thinks it's worth watching once or twice but any director that fails to leave a lasting impression and burn at least one scene, one kill, or even just one moment into the audience's mind is a wasted attempt. It's a miss, in a way. An opportunity that was wasted. Everyone has their own set of preferences though, it all boils down to what disturbs or can rattle the viewer. Not easy to come up with something original at all

Overall rating: 7/10

The Wailing

I'm usually hesitant to trust foreign films to deliver but everyone has praised this film. Gave it a shot and it was 100% worth the 2hrs 36 min spent watching.

Overall = 9.3/10
Fright Meter = 20/100

While it wasn't incredibly scary like many have said, the mystery and tension was fairly strong throughout, especially by the end. There were some disturbing scenes but The Wailing truly shines once you've seen it all to completion and can begin to place the pieces of the puzzle together. I enjoyed the setting, characters were good, and the story this movie paints can be chilling at times. I've seen a handful of masterpieces in the horror genre. They're very rare, but its great whenever one comes along and viewers can sit down and watch one unfold. The Wailing requires a great deal of patience to get through but it's a horror story to remember

I was really looking forward to this movie, being a huge fan of Korean cinema and Korean horror movies as well. The Wailing didn't click with me. At all. I have no idea why, but I just didn't like it. Was so disappointed! Really strange, for me. Maybe my expectations were very different. I might watch it again at some point in case I change my mind.

Understandable tbh. Someone told me they were sure they watched V/H/S when it came out, didn't like it. I watched it for the first time a couple years ago and thought it was an instant classic. V/H/S is a masterpiece but it's rated modestly by critics and fans didn't think so highly of it on aggregate ratings on sites so go figure

It throws some great curve balls at its viewers. Its almost like a tennis match where each side is in an intense volley until one side blunders. Very intelligently written and crafted film. I wish it were a lot scarier and atmospheric from time to time but the snares and twists and dealings were magnificent

Great movie, not very frightening, but it has a great setting and decent plot. My rating is for Suspiria is 8/10

I'm not a ballerina, but this one would could potentially give a ballerina nightmares for life if they were to watch it

Loved this movie. Watched it years ago on a Filmfest in Germany. Then a year or two later it was shown in some indie cinemas here and watched it again. Loved it both times. Korean cinema is where it's at imho since Hollywood produces the same shit 24/7.

That was much better than I was expecting. Cognetti adds a bit more depth and lore, becomes a little bit sharper with what he brings with each film. I remember the second Hell House LLC being the scariest, the one at the Abaddon Hotel. But Hell House LLC Origins is much creepier

Can't really ask for much more, this is up there with some of the best Haunted House horror movies that I've seen

Thought it was fairly clever how Stephen Cognetti wove two settings together as well as props to create this foundation. Those items that were found inside the clock changed the course and added even more mystery. Plus these clowns keep becoming more and more terrifying as the series moves forward. Thought that they were the most unnerving they've ever been in Origins. In the first Hell House LLC they were slightly intimidating. But now we see just how demonic they are and always have been. I don't really trip when I see clowns in horror films, but the ones in the Hell House LLC franchise are starting to slowly build a reputation for themselves

I felt like the main chick who manages the sleuths website had some pretty over the top acting on at least one occasion. But that was the only moment I was drawn away from what was happening. Very frightening movie. Especially well done considering that they had all that space, all those hallways, the entirety of the estate yet it was all so terrifying despite all that cuz they were forced back and trapped regardless. Trying to escape in the woods, yet before dusk arrives they are met with demons in plain sight, toying with their prey…

I also like how the Carmichael Manor looked. Some of those early morning shots where the sun was shining through the Manor gave the appearance that the house was sad and empty, its best days long gone

Overall = 9/10
Terror Meter = 65/100

Hell House Origins was definitely a surprise return to form for the series. I liked the more upbeat ending to 3, because if we're dealing with hell I generally like to see heaven not being totally indifferent to the plight of man and laying some righteous smack down on their fallen brethren, but Origins is just better all around. Easily the best after the first for me.

Also props for having a mixed race lesbian couple without going woke with them. The whole thing was just generally well written and managed to balance believably dumb choices with smart ones that go tits up.

The Mortuary Collection
Directed by Ryan Spindell

High quality anthology horror. They did an excellent job across the board. There's even a wicked fight scene at one point which basically never ever happens in this genre. You normally have to reach for action movies

Thematically, The Mortuary Collection is stellar. One of the best anthologies you can be watching, but my preference will always lean more towards the anthology horrors that dare to go way out there. Content that's way outside the box and not only that — it delivers something that hits from all angles once the show is over. While The Mortuary Collection could probably be given a higher score but I'll leave it at 8.8/10 according to my preferences. Rare to see such a cohesive anthology; this is well put together. It's twisted and dark, but it's not terrifying

Didn't know what I was getting myself into here lol. Saw the title, the poster, the high reviews, and the synopsis clarified to me that there'd be a family vacation with deeply horrific implications so I dived in without much more researching thinking it'd be kind of scary. I'd classify this movie as more of a suspense, thriller, and then horror would be its final element. There are no jump scares at all, just building terror as time continues to move closer to the ending

This one is crazy. And I mean that in that it is one very, very messed up film. It's not one that I would ever watch again, simply because it's difficult to watch and straight up twisted if not pure evil. But it has an unforgettable ending with a message or moral to the story that you won't forget. This was all well shot, and gripping in its ways, but by no means is it a fun watch. It leaves a small mental scar for sure

Great acting, great scenery, very suspenseful at times. It's not very scary at all, but by the time the movie's finished it's easy to categorize; extremely bleak, morbid, and twisted final 15-20 min of film. Wouldn't watch this with anyone that's for sure lol. Speak No Evil has a strong ending or message to say for itself, more of a warning really, but it's morally grotesque and difficult to stomach

Cautiously optimistic.
Absolutely adored the 1st one, and never watched the second because I don't think a sequel could match the 1st one. Anyone see the sequel here?
The second one has some great moments, but is overall weaker, however I agree you should give it a go.

Id say it's a solid 7/10 compared to the firsts 9/10.

The Medium
Directed by Banjong Pisanthanakun

This is from the same director as The Wailing (2019), his next movie being The Medium (2021) and unfortunately it wasn't anywhere near as good. In fact, the ending was a bit of a cop out if I'm being honest. I guessed what would happen fairly early on and was seeing what Banjong was getting at before the movie was halfway finished. Kind of predictable, cliché, and honestly the scenes that were meant to be scary were just corny.

Yea gonna be honest this is really fucking retarded compared to The Wailing. All that screen time for some charlatan to tell us, "Tbh I never knew Ba Yan okay!?" saw that coming a mile away. The parents were dumb as hell too. Keeping their newborn baby in the same house as a possessed woman with several demons possessing her? Morons dude. I didn't like any of the characters at all so this was kind of the definition of mid for me. Normally, demonic movies like this get in my head a bit but the possesed actress just had this goofy smile on her face like 80% of the time

There wasn't one moment that stood out to me. I don't get how this guy could go from a masterpiece like The Wailing to this half-hearted attempt at horror where the twist is literally just a backpeddling on the basis of the story in which we were given. Idk, this was a waste of two hours essentially

Caveat
Director & Writer: Damian Mc Carthy

Extremely tense, unsettling, creepy, atmospheric. Not a moment wasted, it gets straight into it and once the protagonist arrives at the destination it's pure horror from there. This might be the most intimidating film I've seen since the pandemic began. This dude definitely knows what he's doing. Watched a film called Last Shift in 2020 and that was fairly terrifying in its own right. Caveat is even scarier. There was one jump scare that I can recall. The rest of the scenes involve a decent bit of tension building, anxiety driven scenes, plenty of fear filled suspense so you don't have to be overly concerned about or worried too much about jump scares as it relies on more respectable, tried and true methods to scare the audience. It's consistently eerie and frightening throughout. If you're to watch this alone in the still of night or with someone who can respect and wont ruin a bonafide scary movie, then I would bet that Caveat has enough to stir up most viewers on several occasions

Some have stated that there are plot holes in the story but personally I do not agree with that. Much is left up to interpretation with this film. It doesn't have to make complete sense; the viewer may plug in the answers and assume the most logical explanations or even theorize if they'd like to reflect that deeply into the narrative. If you ask me, enough was given to arrive at a conclusion that satisfies. Although I do have a question or two that I suppose cannot be answered and will remain a mystery

Corny, forced, terrible. Scare Package makes my top 10 of worst movies of all time. The movie aims for comedy more than anything but it fails there the hardest imo. Total of eight shorts in all, I'll review them briefly but damn, this shit is kinda a waste of time lol. Put this on if you want background noise basically, and if you miss out on 99% of the movie or only tune in once that's actually a good thing. To those who rated this movie anything past a "poor" three out of ten on any of the critic sites, fuck you

Fan made adaptation of a side story from Resident Evil. It actually looks promising. Don't expect the world, for obvious reasons, but I also think they deserve some pretty big props too.

Psychological horror or thriller. Thought it was good, but it isn't a scary movie

Overall = 7.3/10

I like this one, but if you're looking to pick out a scary horror film look elsewhere. This is the kind of horror story that attacks in a more psychological sense. I don't think it's for everyone, some might get annoyed with it, maybe others depressed while viewing but it had me guessing much of the way and once the credits roll it'll still have you thinking. Does a great job of dishing out a small slice of hell in an unconventional way. Good for one watch and I wouldn't mind watching it a second time in the future the same. Well rounded film, decent enough little venture into both the unknown and the ordinary. Again, it's not scary at all; scenes portray more mystery in its story and trauma than anything else

Great film, I've never seen it until last night. Been meaning to watch this one for years but for some reason I kept holding off. It's simple, but effective, and tense. Everyone should see it once. I actually watched a second movie by the same director, Bryan Bertino weeks ago and failed to realize. He's talented. I'll look to watch all his work if time and all that allows; over the next few years. I'll review it here ITT soon, it's called, "The Dark and the Wicked"

The Dark and the Wicked
Directed and written by Bryan Bertino

One of the better watches past year or two, belongs in that tier. Ominous and tense overall. The setting takes place on a rural farm as a family tries to take care of their father (to the mother, her husband) as he creeps closer towards death in his final days. It doesn't try to do anything over the top. It's an old fashioned horror flick that aims to actually put fear into the audience. The location makes it eerie and frightening, characters are believable, there was one plot twist like sixty to seventy percent into the film that I didn't quite get (maybe I did?) and the story was simple and effective. Liked the ending.

A grief-stricken woman and occultist attempt a ritual to invoke a particular couple of spirits. The acting is very good, some great cinematography from time to time but was expecting much more from this highly acclaimed film. Skinamarink
Directed by Kyle Edward Ball

This is a terrifying film to watch, but it's not one you watch with another or others. You need to watch this one alone to get the most out of it, it's one of those that will not connect if you have someone talking through it. Viewers also need a lot of patience and the willingness to give something different like this a try because it is unique. I've never seen a horror movie create tension like this before, not with these kinds of methods at least. I would advise that viewers pick good earbuds or headphones, watch it at the darkest point in the night alone, keep the volume at like 60-70% of what you would consider loud and see if you can handle it

Skinamarink had what I thought to be a horrible name, so I put it off for the longest time, like five months or so. But now that I have seen it, the name does not seem bad. It's fitting and puzzling at the same time...

To give some context to this movie, a young child awakes in the middle of the night and realizes his parents are missing. He and his sibling migrate to a room downstairs with sleepover materials and cartoons on the television to drown out the deafening silence in order to cope with the strange situation

If you're going to watch this, know that it's polarizing and you might fall into the category that hates this movie and what it gives. I saw plenty of pissed off viewers in chat logs and reviews. Personally, its presentation kind of took me back to that time and mindframe of being a 3-4 year old and experiencing a new home. This movie utilized "jump scares" a small amount of them but they weren't extreme with the volume nor did the team rely on them to do the heavy lifting with the scares. Ngl, this makes me sound like a pussy but I had to lower my volume several times, put down my phone many times because this one was getting to me. The visual style and camera shots have a tendency to draw you in draw you closer and the tension builds more and more as your mind wanders throughout Skinamarink, so it can be easy to psyche yourself out naturally as you consider the events and what is implied as they take place

I briefly looked into the common theory fans have about this movie and it appears to be fitting if not spot on. Kinda wish I had thought about it more before diving into any explanations but it doesn't subtract from the movie any, only the questions that may linger for a while

Overall Rating = 8.7/10
Terror Meter = 94/100

I don't know how this one passed me by. My wife and I are both big horror fans and we were searching for movies regularly over those pandemic years. We watched this movie yesterday thanks to your glowing review.

I do agree with your review, the movie is quite masterful at suspense and dealing with building tension. It knows what it is doing and it uses those neat tricks (which I personally find to be the best things about horror movies) really well.

It's the gamer in me, but some of those rooms in the house look like they took direct inspiration from the Spencer mansion in Resident Evil. And even some sound effects once the film reaches just beyond the half way point. I loved that, even if my interpretation is wrong.

I can forgive my only real gripes with the movie. I feel most horrors tend to show too much, where I think a healthy fear of the unknown is the best thing a horror movie can use to build fear. I wish this movie would have shown just a little more towards the very end. I feel like it was probably budgeting reasons why this didn't happen. And it is one of those films that just 'end'. Oh, it's the credits. Which I feel is becoming a bit overused.

Those things aside, I absolutely enjoyed watching this film. Thanks for sharing your review. I agree on the high scores too!

When Evil Lurks
Directed by Damián Rugna

This is the second film I've seen written and directed by Damián Rugna, the first being Terrified. The acting, atmosphere and concept are all fairly well rounded. The one thing I cannot tell though, is if this guy is intentionally fucking with his audience or if he truly just fails to stick the landing with each movie. Whatever the case, his movies kind of irk me in a way because of that. His storytelling and way of conveying it all isn't for me and I would say "When Evil Lurks" is overrated for sure. It's original in its idea, but falls flat as a horror film. At best, it's slightly disturbing and a bit grotesque but no true scares. Feels like you're watching an incomplete thriller with an average running time more than anything else. Barely fits into the horror category if you ask me. Some deaths are extreme but on the whole ai felt like this one failed to bring anything chilling or eerie or unsettling etc. But the setting was okay, actors did a good job. It's just not a movie that's going to illicit any fear and I doubt viewers linger much into the story's depth or lacktherof once the credits are done rolling
