Hereditary
Directed and written by Ari Aster

An excellent horror story. One of the most unholy, iniquitous twists in any movie that I think I have ever seen takes place a little bit past the halfway mark in Hereditary. Definitely a must watch masterpiece. There's a lot of subtlety involved and I appreciate that. Not very frightening imo, but a very disturbing story unfolds here that will have you thinking and connecting all the dots after the credits roll. Extremely dark, depressing, and sinister plot

Overall = 9.4/10

SiREN
Directed by Gregg Bishop

Wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be. This movie is based on the short "Amateur Night" on the first V/H/S which I thought was amazing. This had the potential to be an all time great imo, but Gregg Bishop missed completely. To point out the disappointments really quick, the acting wasn't very good, the CGI is tacky if not laughable at times, missed opportunities galore with the Lily, and again the acting was pretty bad; failing to bring any true excitement. Mr. Nyx was alright. SiREN is kind of fun at times, but those times are fleeting. Not sure what the budget was with this movie, but it doesn't matter much because there wasn't much there for fans to discuss either way. The entire concept was squandered, but at least we were given a full length movie that followed up and gave us something

Overall Rating = 5/10

Horror in the High Desert 3: Firewatch released a couple months ago. I've been waiting for that one but completely forgot it was in the making, for a time. Here's the premise of the movie:

As a wildfire bears down on the opposite side of the state, Oscar Mendoza, armed with a secret, takes advantage of the distraction and journeys to Northeastern Nevada in search of missing outdoorsman Gary Hinge's last known whereabouts

Me and the wife just saw The Substance at the local theater. This film was fucking awesome. Loved just about everything tats here. Great acting, great cinematography, great sound, and a pumping soundtrack. 2 plus hours flies right by.

I'm very glad to see that this film could have easily went into hyper feminism territory, but it steers clear by showing males just might be dealing with this ordeal as well. This movie is more of a "fuck you" to Hollywood executives ( As Chris Gore says)

Honestly, besides the last 20 minutes that goes a bit too over the top (for some people), the movie is basically flawless IMO. If you guys fancy some extreme French filmmaking in the vain of Gasper Noe. You will love this.

….also , holy shit! The eye candy.

I'm slowly creeping into full swing for the spooky season, trying to pace myself so I don't shoot my ectoplasm all over the place.....lol.

Talked my wife into watching the Scream TV series with me. I'm pretty sure that series is hated by Scream diehards but with all respect to them, their opinion means nothing to me considering they act like Scream 5 & 6 are anything other than truly awful films, ha.

The Scream TV series though, there were 3 seasons, 1&2 are the same characters, not sure what 3 is about but it was definitely a reboot. S1&2 though is just popcorn goodness. It was a few years before things went woke and the kills are legit, especially when things really start ramping up. The Randy character is lovable and the rest of the cast have good arcs. Highly recommended if that sounds fun and you want something new to watch.

For fun, I'll post some relatively modern movies that I think are insanely underrated, or maybe overlooked.

Lights Out (2016) - The less you know about this movie, the better. If you don't know the synopsis, don't look it up, just watch it. The movie is 81 minutes long, PG-13, and is top shelf horror all day. Legitimately creepy as F and the pacing is spot on. Awesome movie for October.

The Nun (2018) - This movie got roasted and I have no idea why. The exorcism side plot definitely could have been tossed but everything else about the movie is so great. Strong Lucio Fulci vibes and it feels like an adventure movie at times. The atmosphere is so damn good. I saw it baked as hell opening night and the opening scene was crazy effective. Still holds up on repeated viewings. Really fun campy horror movie with a great vibe. The sequel was such a massive disappointment to me, and of course reviewers say it's better.

We Are Still Here (2015) - This movie was such a pleasant surprise. Rented it years ago when it was new, had no idea what to expect. Reminded me of Fulci and was happy to later learn that the director wanted to make a movie reminiscent of 'The House By The Cemetery' Fulci/Italian horror classic. This movie is great, definitely check it out if you've never heard of it.

Dead Silence (2007) - James Wan & Leigh Whannel's film after the success of SAW. This movie was roasted, flopped, and James & Leigh have largely disowned it. It's so unwarranted! This is one of James best shot films and it is genuinely creepy as F. The villain, Mary Shaw, she has some hair-raising scenes and it's just a fun popcorn horror movie. Avoid the Director's Cut at all costs though, ruins the scares with CGI and it's just dumb. Watch the theatrical release.

Darkness Falls (2003) - Tooth Fairy is the villain and you have to stay out of the dark.... PG-13 but a really fun time. Similar scares to Dead Silence and Light's Out, and not as good as those two IMO but still a fun movie and easily one of the best horror movies from that time period. Saw that in theaters too and was surprised as how effective some of the scares were.

I was really hoping that my local theater (the only theater in town) would get Bagman, it sounds like a fun creepy movie to me. Urban legend type scenario, monster who lures kids in and stuffs them in his bag to be eaten later. Maybe it'll suck, no clue, reviews aren't out but it releases this Friday I think.

I start Creepy Season with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and end it Halloween night with Trick r Treat. Really like that you've got some James Wan universe stuff on there; frankly even the bad stuff is decent, and the good stuff is truly scary.

Longlegs was pretty good.

It's more Exorcist 3 than Silence of the Lambs. It also has the pacing and dread building that The Blackcoats Daughter had (ironic since Kiernan Shipka is in both)

Could have had a more definitive or satisfying? ending, but god damn the cinematography and sound design are on point.

I was worried about the casting choices of Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, but in the context of their characters they nailed it.

Not so much horror, but mind fuck. Yoi will definable watch it twice

I find myself randomly thinking of that dude being pushed into the pipe. Think it's mostly just being aware of my own mortality and how something completely trivial could lead to a horrific outcome. I only saw the movie once and its pretty good, definitely a mind F.

The Innkeepers is another fun horror movie. It's super effective if you have good surround sound and play it loud. Great pacing too, relatively slow but makes the end all the more effective.

Nice. I liked Scary Stories, hope it gets a sequel. Wife and I are camping this weekend, annual thing at a favorite spot. I always take the Scary Stories anthology book and read some favorites by the campfire.

Definitely check out Dead Silence if you never have. It's nothing mind blowing but it's just a fun movie and the filming and atmosphere are so freaking good. Mary Shaw too, man she is creepy. Movie deserved better from horror fans.

Hell Fest is another fun movie. Slasher from a few years back, Halloween night at an amusement park. Nothing more than popcorn horror but also better than I expected.

I have that movie on a couple of lists, will give it a watch eventually. Wish more movies could nail atmosphere and have better cinematography. Those two categories go a long way in this genre. Like with Trick 'r Treat, (just did a rewatch few days ago) that movie has both going for it and is one of those movies you can put on a couple of times during the Fall and it never gets old. The first two Hell House LLC films + The Carmichael Manor as well as The Houses October Built can be annual staples in the queue. They're all very good. Excellent scenery has always been a huge reason why I love these kinds of films

I forgot to mention earlier that I have Trick r' Treat too. I remember when that movie almost didn't get released. It was delayed like crazy and then finally went straight to Blu-Ray. Awesome movie.

I think I watched the first two Hell House movies on Shudder when I used to subscribe. I've been meaning to watch The Houses October Built.

My Bloody Valentine 3D
is another overlooked gem. That movie is far better than it has any right to be and it's all because it plays to slasher fan expectations. The kills are awesome, the humor is great. It has a comically long full-nude scene that has to be seen to be believed, and above all else, it has TOM ATKINS.

If any of you have kids, The Halloween Tree is a total gem. Ray Bradbury short story turned Children's TV movie. I think it's on some streaming services. Great story that will hit you in the feels.

Love Dead Silence. I think that might've been James Wan's first movie maybe? I can't remember. But yes, it's very good. I haven't seen Hell Fest, I'm going to check that one out.

This releases this friday, never heard of it until this morning.

Looks fun, I'm always up to checking out a family/teen adventure horror. Mel Gibson is an executive producer and the director is devout Catholic so I'm assuming there won't be any woke nonsense in it.

Disney used to be great, they had a lot of classic cartoons and movies for us kids. I grew up watching them. Even Stevens was probably their last good show, and then they plummeted

Even Stevens was awesome. I grew up on the Disney Channel. The pre-woke stuff is timeless, fire up any old show, movie, cartoon, guaranteed to be entertained.

Might have to wait for some of the Shudder streaming movies I planned on watching this month. The TV can play them, but I planned on watching the supernatural ones with my phone some of the nights. Shudder app is so trash bros, after this year I'm done with these amateurs. Their customer support is all AI generated too, useless

Edit: Black screen on Shudder app while playing on Android phone. Tried every troubleshooting methods known to man four times over. Audio plays. Weird situation, can only assume it's a combination of their faulty app and my phone doing something to prevent movies from playing

That's wild that it's still that bad. I subscribed for years but cancelled probably 18 months ago. Just didn't watch all that much and the original programming was heading towards lame ass woke shit, and then the trans community looped in Joe Bob Briggs and he bent the knee. I had had enough. All the memories are coming in of how trash the app was, lol.

The Arrow streaming service isn't too bad. I had that too for a while and it's cheap as hell, or was when I used it. The selection is small but it's worth it for a month or two and it gives you access to some interesting micro budget horror shorts. https://www.arrow-player.com

The Taking Of Deborah Logan
Directed by Adam Robitel

Pretty good found footage film about an elderly woman suffering from Alzheimer's. She owns a house and lives with her only daughter, Sarah, but cannot quite make ends meet. To earn some extra money for living expenses, she invites a film crew to film her day-to-day life as she tries her best to battle the terrible neurodegenerative disease that she lives with

Definitely a good horror film to watch. But I expect a lot from these kinds of stories, and it didn't reach the extremes that I was hoping for. Did alright for itself though. I liked the entire thing, but nothing was very frightening because the director does a poor job of building tension imo. Lets it go way too quickly; before tension really even has a chance to properly climb... Worth it for the last segment. The cast is good, setting is good, story is okay, and thankfully the final ten minutes offered a little something worth waiting for

Overall = 6.8/10

Yeah the main character did a great job but there was nothing scary about her tbh. The final segments with her is when things finally got interesting. I wasn't expecting that shot of her going full demon possession mode and taking on some of the features of what a demon might look like. Pretty wild to see her about to devour that child whole until her daughter opened fire. That's more what I was looking for. If there isn't a terrifying shot or two of the possessed member in the movie, then it was a waste of an opportunity imo. I'm glad the filmmakers came through in that way

I liked the cast too, they weren't bad. Great how that one guy had the sense to get out of there right at the perfect time. He was about to have his pay doubled and everything but his common sense took over and he burned rubber. Given the final act, I'd say he might be one of the smartest recorders in found footage history lol. The daughter was an alright character I guess, the chick leading the film crew was kind of annoying but she had a convincing role in the final act. Probably the worst acting belonged to the hospital workers and staff, Deborah on the loose that many times and the little girl kidnapped all those times is not very believable. The very last shot of that kid who was abducted seems to point towards a possible sequel, which has potential, I can see a strong sequel being made after this but it's been ten years so probably not going to happen

Honestly the movie deserves a bit higher of a score than 6.8/10 but I can't justify that at the same time because it was too tame for a possession film. The Taking of Deborah Logan failed to cause any intimidation, which is unusual for a possession kind of exorcism type horror movie. I felt like all the moments where there could have been some strong tension building were either ruined by showing Deborah too quickly, or by showing her simply by showing her and expecting her alone and her behavior to be scary... It could have been a bit more fright inducing had the sound and soundtrack been better, maybe. The makeup of Deborah and her more sickly look as things progressed wasn't scary. Her tearing off her flesh with the ease of ripping open an envelope didn't do much but show how strong the demon was. Could name more instances but every opportunity went by without a scare. It was a dud in that department for me. The actors around Deborah were more convincing in their distress during these moments than what Robitel had Deborah show the audience 75% of the time. My favorite part about this movie is definitely the final 10-15 minutes but I do appreciate all the small details adding up before that. Just a tad bit overrated of a movie by folks and it's not a scary horror film imo

When they walked up and into the attic it started to get better from there. I liked the sequence in that tunnel or wherever they were, with the snakes and and the final confrontation. This could have been an excellent movie but I just can't fully commend a horror film that fails to bring any scares. At least there were two shocking scenes to behold at the end. Those two shocking scenes coupled with the strong ideas that were fairly executed make this movie good and worth the watch but I don't believe I'll be watching this movie again

10/31 Part II
Directed by Tory Van Buskirk, Stephen Wolfe, Max Groah, Drew Marvick, Jennifer Nangle

The grilled cheese of horror is back. With extra jalapeño. And breasts. I reached for something light to watch. Something cheap and comical, 10/31 Part II did the trick. There were some amusing moments. One scene was so silly I couldn't help but laugh despite having watched this solo

This was a really fun movie. The trailer doesn't do a good job of showing its strengths.

Went into it not really knowing what to expect, really solid though. Nothing mind blowing and it's been done better but Mel Gibson was awesome, the jokes were funny, good acting from the leads, legit spooky in a PG-13 way and you won't guess the villain, they did a good job of slow-rolling the mystery aspect. They also went for it at the end, I couldn't help but laugh because I didn't expect things to ramp up in such a way. Small Spoiler: Mel Gibson straight up execution-style kills the villain at the end, lol.

Hard to recommend grown men go see a family centered horror movie but if you got a wife and kids and want some fun entertainment, I don't think you can go wrong. I'll definitely watch it again at some point.

New Salem's Lot had a fair share of faults but would've been serviceable… were it not for the worst ending sequence in a King adaptation in recent memory. You have been warned. Movie would've been a C (and stilll vastly inferior to the Tobe Hooper version) but the end sequence drags it down to a D (yes, it fucking sucks.)

Found footage can be amazing. Recently watched Be My Cat (Tubi), Long Pigs (found it on YouTube), and Milk &Serial (also on YouTube)

All three were great. Tubi also has a bunch of FF horror (including the first 3 v/h/s movies) Even though they aren't the best, each one usually has at least one good short worth checking out.

If you want the Asylum's best movie by accident, check out Paranormal Entity on Tubi. They tried to make a Paranormal Activity rip off and made a movie that's actually scarier.

and the Tubi coup de grace is the double feature of Megan is Missing and The Poughkeepsie Tapes

I think FF can work but with VHS it's diminishing returns. It's a neat gimmick but when you have 5 stories segments the gimmick wears thin. There is only so much you can do with its a body cam or go pro or cell phone or hand held. Eventually the gimmick gets a bit old.

Also speaking of FF. How did anyone think cannibal holocaust was real FF lol. I guess in the 70s people didn't have concept of recorded video so they were a bit more fooled.

Blair Witch might still be the goat of FF in regards to feeling real and logical.

Wife and I watched it tonight.

It wasn't terrible but man, that movie is filmed really weird. It felt like a CBS made for TV movie, maybe that was intentional. Either way, I actually liked that aspect but it was really distracting. The lighting was terrible too, it was never dark and the day scenes were so damn bright.

Overall, the movie is pretty awful but it was fun to see a vampire movie where the vampires are straight up evil and deadly. I can absolutely see why it didn't go to theaters. The director said his first cut was 3 hours. Curious how that would be.

I don't regret watching it but won't watch it a 2nd time.

Speaking of made for TV movies and Stephen King, I've always been a big fan of Rose Red. Takes a while to get going but once they're in the house, it turns into a great Haunted House movie.

Children of the Night 1991 - Presented by Fangoria.

My brother and I rented this when we were really young. It was so damn terrifying to me. The depictions of the vampires are quite disturbing but it's also campy as hell. Just a really bizarre movie but worth a watch.

Same director as Hellraiser II and it has Karen Black, the mom in House of 1000 Corpses.

V/H/S Beyond
Directed by Jay Cheel, Jordan Downey, Virat Pal, Justin Martinez, Justin Long, Christian Long, Kate Siegel

Abduction/Adduction = 3.6 /10
Stork = 8/10
Dream Girl = 5.4/10
Live And Let Dive = 8.6/10
Fur Babies = 2/10
Stowaway = 6.7/10

Overall = 5.7/10

Bro I was looking forward to this one, like really looking forward to it. They had the perfect theme too, but it lands somewhere middle of the road for me. The wraparound was nice tbh but very weak, I thought something crazy was going to be revealed but in the end it seems like there was something implanted and taken out of that one Chinese homeowner in that wealthy house? Thought that was lame

Stork = Really good. Almost like a video game. Besides the ending portion of it my favorite part was probably the beginning where they were all gearing up and discussing the plan; stocking up on weapons and ammo

Dream Girl = Isn't that good but there was a lot of carnage and chaos once the twist was revealed

Live And Let Dive = Easily the best of the bunch. Loved those hilarious birthday wishes taking place up in the air on the plane. Loved the fact that UFOs were right next to them and doing damage mid-air top their plane. The fall and sky diving portion was thrilling, orange field area scramble was kind of cool too but I liked the part where he found that truck driver and was desperate for help, got shot in the hand and then abducted while in the truck. Yea this one was up there, I liked the special effects and almost everything about this short

Fur Babies = Terrible lol. I figured Justin Long was going to bring the goods with his segment but his and his bro's shouldn't have even made the cut if you ask me. There was nothing even closely related to aliens here...

Stowaway = Actually kind of good but at the same time this could have maybe been better. It's hard to see everything as it happens but Stowaway was more along the lines of what I was expecting, much like Live And Let Dive. Probably the most messed up tape in Beyond, in a way. Definitely made you wonder the most out of all of them and ends up on an extremely disturbing note. I thought it was disturbing enough when she entered the ET pod / spaceship but it only got worse from there. No idea why she entered that thing, but man did she get destroyed...

The Empty Man
Directed and written by David Prior

Not very good. Visually and artistically there are decent scenes here and there to look at but this one fell flat on me. Especially for a two hour movie, ya gotta do better than that. Honestly I think the characters are just boring and everything is kind of a slog to watch most of the way through. Very depressing tone with no high notes anywhere to be found. Not a fan of this one

Thought it was shallow. I think one of the only things I enjoyed about The Empty Man was the fact that there was a society out there that was crazy yet perceptive enough to know about this entity and to sort of research it to some degree. They worshipped it and allowed it to 'thrive'

Only redeeming part of The Empty Man: the scenes where the characters are vulnerable, isolated or picked apart due to the entity that is The Empty Man. Can't say there was anything all that great about this movie. I don't usually care for cult horror but some have done well for themselves. I would say that this is not one of the successful ones that hits the target as The Empty Man is a bore to sit through

Overall Rating = 5.3/10
