What is Formula 1?

It has been described as the world's biggest Maths competition by Hannah Fry, and involves a colourful international circus of glamour and horsepower on their annual trek around the globe.
The US company Liberty Media has taken over the reigns in the recent years, which also made the sport a little more accessible to newcomers.
If you only know it from the Netflix docuseries "Drive to Survive" you might think it is a competition in creative swearing.

This year Sir Lewis Hamilton is attempting to break all remaining records, aiming for his 8th world championship title. Last year he had it in the bag with a few races to spare, since the Mercedes AMG team was simply dominant and no other team even got close. Ferrari, their main competitor in 2018 and 2019, have not technically been cheating, but after they stopped "not cheating" their engines were down on power.

Why is this year different?

This is Hondas last year as engine supplier, and they are going all-in, while Mercedes is perhaps more forward-looking. The regulations of the sport will change quite significantly in 2022, that means the cars will look very different from next year. While Mercedes will be more interested in developing an engine for 2022 and beyond, Honda puts everything into this years' power unit. The teams supplied by Honda (Red Bull and Italian Red Bull, see below) will be going for it, and the spearhead of this attack is Max Verstappen, the Dutch Wunderkind and son of former F1 driver Joss Verstappen.

The Cars

Formula 1 cars are purpose-built to go as fast as possible around a series of different international racetracks.

All-2021-F1-cars.jpg

It is quite noticeable that the only US team in the grid drives with a giant Russian flag on it's side.

While they might look similar at first glance, they are not. F1 is a manufacturers championship, so every team needs to design and build their own cars. Only a few key components can be purchased from other suppliers (usually other teams), such as the engine or the gearbox. The only parts all teams have in common are: the tyres, the halo protection device and the TV cameras mounted on top of the car.

They might not look like your typical Toyota Prius, but all F1 cars are hybrid vehicles, running on the unholy combination of lightning and dead dinosaurs. There are 4 engine suppliers in the sport at the moment:

Mercedes, who have dominated the current F1 era since 2014;
3ngP.gif

Ferrari, who have dominated suicide notes since 2008;
M6FJ.gif

Renault, who in 2015 claimed to compete for race wins in 2018;
200.gif

Honda, who spent years trying to catch up with the other three and have the tendency to quit F1 as soon as they have a competitive engine and car. Writing this at the beginning of the 2021 season, the engine looks rather mighty...

Just dropping in to say Bahrain was FUCKING awesome. So gutted Max didn't get the win, but what a great race. Midfield battles were also insane. So much to say but I'll maybe save it for a longer post when I'm not so tired.

Season is nicely poised, can't wait for Imola.

Decent race all in all and Imola coming back is a nice Corona bonus. I hope f1 remember the tracks that got them out of a hole and treat them well.

This weekend is the first race of the Extreme E series. The electric SUV they use looks like fun, but doesn't go very far on one battery, so it's more of a series of offroad sprints:

The field is quite a wild mix of drivers of various series including WRC, DTM, Dakar, Formula 1, Rallycross, various GT and open wheeler series and even some that have more experience on 2 wheels rather than 4. Will watch the first race and see how it goes. The official Extreme E website is a nightmare to navigate, too many pointless animations just to switch from one part of the page to the next.

Mercs back on top in practice. I honestly wonder if Vettel will last the full season.
I think he's going to give it up if things don't turn around fast. At least they've got the Hulk, would be way more exciting. I was looking forward to Vettel being in the Aston, thought he might find his fire again. Driving into the back of Ocon and then trying to blame him after a horrible race was basically confirmation for me that he's done.

Lots of people making mistakes and going off today. Should be an exciting race. Might stick a tenner on a Gasly podium.

That crash between Bottas and Russell was big:

Incredible recovery drive from Lewis, though. I really thought his race was over when he slid into the gravel.

Funny how it´s always Kimi behind such crashes. Coincidence?

Great race, good that Bottas and Russel got out in one piece respectively. Verstappen had a mega start, after that it was quite smooth for the Red Bull (other than almost driving off the road at the restart). One of these rare mistakes by Lewis, but once again he is lucky that Russel decided to suicide bomb Bottas in an attempt to secure his Merc seat for 2022.

Toto Wolff was very clear where he sees Russel next year if he keeps on driving like this:

Lap 32 was quite something...

Great recovery by Lewis, and well done McLaren putting their cars on the soft tyre. Was a risk but it paid off with Lando being able to get past Leclerc. So to summarize:

In other motorsport news, Formula E showed last weekend why they don't race on actual racetracks:

For those who didn't watch it, only half the field made it to the finish because they all ran out of battery :ROFLMAO: Da Costa mis-judged the restart after the 5th safety car, which left most of drivers with not enough energy to complete the race. I was laughing the entire last lap.

Meanwhile, Formula 1 agreed on sprint races for 3 locations this year, Silverstone, Monza and possibly Brazil, to determine the starting order:

7ervvb2exov61.jpg

No wait, I got that wrong, they will in fact not sprint to their cars. How boring. Ok facts:

The sprint races will just go 100 km, no mandatory pit stops, and only 3 points for the win. I'm somewhat lukewarm on the idea. From a UK perspective just a blatant attempt to get F1 fans to sign up for Sky subscription rather than just getting day passes if you want to see races live.

Read about this. What a mess. 😆

Side note, where can I watch these live? I think YouTube played most of the races last season. Is it on CBS sports only or what?

Here in the UK it's shown on BBC sport/iPlayer/red button. You can try to figure out via their website:

A preview of the next season of drive to survive...

Speaking of DTS, I thought the last season was pretty shit outside of the Grosjean episode. I know it's over-dramatised and often a little cringe to the hardcore F1 fan, but I really didn't enjoy it compared to season 1 and 2.

If you boys get the chance, give this week's Beyond the Grid podcast episode a listen with Paddy Lowe. Goes into a little bit of detail on the Williams fiasco (which he incidentally came out very badly in if DTS season 2 is anything to go by). Makes some very timely points about the state of the team without diving into a lot of detail, respectfully. Nice to get his perspective on it. Also seems to sum up quite nicely the potential folly in motorsport chasing "green energy" in the final few minutes. Top lad. Would like to hear more from him.

Good luck to Mercedes!!

Can't wait to see them fighting for scraps in 9th and 10th place in 2025. Funny how openly refusing to hire the best talent, regardless of skin colour, will have an immediate and tangible effect on results. Amazed that Wolff is backing this based on how successful Mercedes has been since 2014. I guess virtue takes precedent over success in 2021's clown world. 25% is hilarious. No country in Europe (especially Germany and the U.K) is anywhere close to a 25% ethnic population, both are under 15% in fact. Corpos bending over backwards to "make a statement" yet again...

The really funny (or sad?) thing about this is that it will have no impact on Hamilton at all, who will either be a music or Hollywood star come 2025. Still going out of his way to make sure George Russell never wins a race! 👏

Top 10 for tomorrow's GP:

  • 1 Valtteri BOTTAS Mercedes
  • 2 Lewis HAMILTON Mercedes
  • 3 Max VERSTAPPEN Red Bull Racing
  • 4 Sergio PEREZ Red Bull Racing
  • 5 Carlos SAINZ Ferrari
  • 6 Esteban OCON Alpine
  • 7 Lando NORRIS McLaren
  • 8 Charles LECLERC Ferrari
  • 9 Pierre GASLY AlphaTauri
  • 10 Sebastian VETTEL Aston Martin

Good to see that Vettel had a reasonable qualifying, albeit I'm sure he expected Aston Martin to be more competitive in the mid field.

Last time supermax jumped from 3rd to 1st in the first turn, but I somehow doubt the Mercedes will fall for this a second time in a row.

I fell asleep. Utter shit. The IndyCar last night was better. Watching tonight's race in the morning so no spoilers you cunts.

I agree with Max in his assessment "hopefully we don't come back here" after the Sunday GP.

The problem is that Spain isn't any better - a terrible track actually. I'll probably skip the next couple of GPs after the snoozefest in Portugal.

Spain might be a terrible track, but it's differently terrible than Portimao. It has much more fast corners in which the Red Bull should be pretty quick.

Qualifying results for Spain tomorrow. Hopefully won't be a total snoozer, but we'll see.
