Thread: Dragon's Dogma II [OT] - The Wind is Pushing Me! (Strong Internet Recommended)
Official Thread
I'm still right at the start after getting my pawn. I booked all of my work in for the end of the week so haven't had a real chance to play.

Tomorrow I'll have a lot of time to try the game proper. I'm liking most of the impressions I'm reading so far. I don't think the performance on console will put me off too much.

The original game on PS3 is the only game I can ever remember turning off in disgust based on performance issues. It had what felt like a 10 foot draw distance 😂

I killed a few cyclopes and two ( I think?) minotaurs. Had a death during a fight with a cyclops and a gryphon. These gryphons are utter bastards, have not managed to attempt one properly yet, as I am avoiding them.

I like the game so far (10 hours in). It is a pity the tech is so janky, because the combat is good and frenetic, the lack of hand holding feels great and there are plenty of times I am utterly engrossed in what is happening.

Some criticisms:

* I can't see shit during big fights with all the spell effects.
* I wish there was a roll or dash.
* I really wish I could pull the camera a bit further out. It often feels claustrophobic.
* Why not let me make notes on the map? How am I supposed to remember all this shit?
* The pop-in is horrendous. The tech overall is bad, get your shit together.

A lot of fun despite, though.

Fucking hell . Performance issues be damned. This game is fucking awesome. DD1 was one of my favorite PS3 era games, and this one will likely be my personal goty.

I only have about 17 hours of playtime blocked and I could write paragraph after paragraph about all the crazy adventures my party has been through. I love how natural and dynamically everything comes together.

This game really captures the feel of a D&D campaign with the sights and sounds of LotR throughout. I just wish Capcom would have let this cook for a month or two more to iron out the performance.

From what I've played, Dragons Dogma II is up there with Baldurs Gate 3 and Elden Ring as Generation Defining games. Sense of progression and power is Absolutely God Tier.

Also seen Red Dead Redemption II, Resident Evil 4 Remake, Demon Souls Remake, God of War 2018, Octopath Traveler II (yes) named as such here and there.

Went back to a village to get a key, things escalated, things escalated too fucking far
a dragon was attacking it lol and a huge battle between it and the village defenders ensured before it got bored and left. I did get mystic spearhead as a result from one of the defenders though and its some pretty sick shit even at low level. 10/10 game holy shit.

Came is to say the same thing. Game is potentially genre defining and I'm enjoying it as much as Elden Ring… maybe even more so by the end. Exploring the world is amazing and the two vocations I tried are different but amazing. I still like thief the best.

So can we talk about the shrines? What in the fuck? One wants me to answer riddles and the other one I found no guardian exists but I can see the chest. Maybe I need to come back at night?

So how many shrines are there pad?

I got it today! Wasn't expecting to get it but here I am, a proud owner of the game. Enjoying it alot more than expected so far! Went with Fighter class for that close-to-DMC combat experience. It is clicking with me alot more than the first game so far. So glad I gave the sequel a chance. Might even give that first one another chance.

So...I found the Sphinx.

Through a long series of unrelated events including reviving a escort across an ancient battlefield and castle to conduct a ritual to calm the dead, who then promptly died when the party was ambushed by skeletons. Had to go back to the capital and back to get a wakestone, then revived him and completed that mission, then noticed a cave in back of the fortress leading to ancient notGreek ruins, beat a golem. Then entered a long shrine leading up to a massive notGreek temple carved into a cliffside overlooking the world and ok I found the sphinx. Shes staring at me and I'm not good at riddles. Fuck.

This game man.

About 7.5 hours in now and it still hasn't quite clicked yet. Definitely seeing some moments of awesomeness here and there, and the sense of adventure is great just like the first game, so I'm hoping it picks up soon.

I tried turning off Ray Tracing and all of the flickering/visual artifacts I complained about earlier went away. It seems like Capcom's implementation has problems any time an object or model is in front of something. The lighting definitely looks better, but it got really distracting in movement, so I think I might just keep it off, which is disappointing for me because I'm a huge ray tracing fan. I also turned off screen space reflections because they are terrible in this.

Yeah this was a trip to discover. It's one of the
shrines

After seeing this I started to take exploring much more serious. Makes me wonder what I have missed.

I'm running a 13900k just at stock and 64GB of 5600mhz DDR5 RAM. The reported framerate is usually above 60 or even 70, but it just feels awful and is constantly stuttering. Combined with the weird visual glitches (light sometimes bleeding through walls, flickering outlines of NPCs and objects, NPCs popping in and out of existence right in front of you, etc.) and it's just a bit frustrating considering how much time will likely be spent in this town. It's not the end of the world, but performance issues like this were the last thing I was expecting from this game. RE Engine games typically run really well.

The flickering is weird, never seen it. NPCs popping in is a thing unfortunately, they did it to improve performance in the cities LOL

While it's generally fine for me, my 50 fps feel worse than 50 fps in other games. Less snappy and less fluid. They definitely have to address the CPU issues. Getting Bloodborne frame pacing vibes in some scenes.

Outside of the tech fuckery, here my impressions so far.

- fucking love it
- exploration is INSANE the world is huge and you find stuff around every corner, there's adventure everywhere.
- I was on my way to an elf dude, explored but then night time came, which was very intense in an unknown and dangerous territory, stumbled across great fights against big enemies, found a cave related to a different quest I didn't even look out for, went though that complex underground structure with different paths, saw a treasure I could reach and told my main Mage Pawn to get it and he flew over there because I gave him that skill, found a way out to finally see sunlight again, to encounter a Griffin in an action packed fight.
- unlocked really cool abilities with the Archer, God damn it's so smooth and vicious!
- the dynamic nature of the encounters with all the physics going on is something else.

Also saw comments about adjusting the camera in settings so its not so zoomed close in. Helps a lot.

THANK YOU! I don't know how I missed that!

How do you do that? My main Mage pawn has the levitation skill, he saw a chest a bit higher than I can reach, but I was too slow to select Go (or Get it or sth, the up on the d-pad). Is there a way to target an item like a chest or a folded ladder and tell the mage to levitate there to go and get it or unravel it?

With that chest, I simply looked at it and pressed up on the D-Pad, then he flew over there. Saw an elevated latter earlier but didn't have that skill unlocked at that time. Will try it out when I'm back there, already have my route planned lol

Was going to say, this a pro tip that I learned after more than 10 hours playing as a thief, dashing all over the place while not being able to see anything haha. Definitely zoom out the camera, no idea why it is so close by default.

Just under 8 hours dicking around and there are so many odd inspirations I feel this game has. In some ways I look at the landscape similarly to Death Stranding purely from the point of how I'm walking where I'm walking. The combat is so jank/arcade to me the only real comparison I can make for the consistency for button mashing combat is that of Yakuza game mixed with Witcher 3. Simultaneously there's aspects that make me feel like the combat/exploration is like Monster Hunter World.

I totally see inspirations of these other games but this is 100% a Dragons Dogma game evolved. Shitty UI remains but so much vast improvement on the original while falling directly in the shadow of the original games storyline.

I dunno there's anything polished in this game for it to be a real GotY but it may just be that based on how much time/fun I get out of it.

Broke 228k today.

Yeah I had a cool encounter with a pawn that would launch me to treasure chest out of reach.

One gripe I have with the paws is I'll be following one to a quest and the we get in fight and afterwards the pawn won't pick up the trail again. Its very frustrating to try and get them to trigger the pathing again.

Hope this game gets proper path tracing.

Wink wink

What a little bitch.

EDIT: upon re-reading it, I kind of get it. Why do they need to discuss that shit anyway, either way? Regardless, it's just stupid banter but I could see it pissing someone off.

Come on! You'd be the first one to moan about this stuff if it was another game! ;)

They should give that game to Nixxes for three months to fix all the tech shit. Sigh.

Prepare for none of the issues getting really fixed.

Well now your parents and everybody else is aware of it too, Thanks Pawns!

I just got this Steam award The Regriffining only 7.9 players have.....truth be told a Griffin gangraped my whole crew but I tried to grab onto him....instead I melted into his body and he flew away after leaving my party dead.......I then proceeded to fly in his belly for quite a ways until I randomly fell out to my death.......AWARD GRANTED!

Huge warning with massive game changing events -

Spoilers
Beware pawns infected with Dragon Plague, red eyes, erratic behavior usually gained by fighting a dragon or contact with a infected pawn . Seeing people mention an infected pawn can basicly wipe out villages, even the fucking capital and all of their assorted quests. Only solutions it seems so far is to dismiss infected immediately and or give them to the brine. You need to check for this anytime you bring in new pawns.
