Thread: [Digital Foundry]: Resident Evil 8 Village - XSX vs. PS5
60fps with RT on is impressive. Didn't they say 45fps before? Anyways, game looks impressive for a cross-gen game.

* XSX has 10% performance advantage over PS5 with RT ON (reconstructed 4k)
* Everything else is identical
It's interesting how close both continue to perform.

After a generation that featured a PS4 vs. Xbox One battle with a clear advantage, then turned into a reversed Xbox One X vs. PS4 Pro battle, also with a clear advantage (outside of Sony exclusives), it's so strange to have games essentially be fundamentally identical between the two.

Like this, lol, says:

10% performance advantage! Fuuuuuuu

Pre order cancelled and throwing mine and @Mista 's PS5s off the balcony.

These tiny differences don't really have anyone losing.

At this point, it's more about the game libraries and system features, and where you prefer to play. And... maybe that's a good thing. I do feel like the gaming obsession with comparing visuals had gotten a little crazy. Even last gen, the differences weren't that pronounced.

So refreshing to have a DF thread without the console warriors. Watching video now.
Refreshing is an understatement. There are a few people who genuinely want to have a discussion, then you have the other 98.5% of people who identify as console warriors.

Had a long conversation about the routes Capcom is taking the series, and I feel like it's gonna slowly go back to it's roots. Can't wait to play this Friday, and not be limited to a single hour of gameplay.

Yeah. I don't really think I've ever seen a publisher lowball their game, rather the opposite, so it kind of makes me wonder if the game will keep up this performance for the entirety.

Maybe at some point, you come to some place with crazy lighting and all kinds of reflections, and that 45 FPS crash does happen.

Definitely. If there's a heavy scene/segment with lots of stuff going on it'll 100% drop

SeriesS though, I can't imagine how this thing will perform in 4+ years.
It's probably the most interesting part of these comparisons at this point, as nobody is entirely sure what to expect, especially over time. 1080p, 1440p, 60 FPS, 30 FPS, RT On, RT Off, it tends to land anywhere.

I do wonder if time could be an ally to the Series S and not an enemy. Whereas it has to brute force it's way through these cross-gen games, later games specifically made with next-gen in mind and using all the next-gen tricks the Series S was designed for, may have it doing well?

It really is going to depend, and have to be something we see play out.

I would hope that this is true. But I remain sceptical, because from what I've seen, the new consoles are rather easy to code for and the learning curve for devs isn't that high. So compared to launch window PS4/XOne games, these new early games this gen are comparatively better optimized.

Yes, current games don't take full advantage of the hardware. And we will see better results during the next years.
But we see consoles slowly starting to struggle when the years go by. Usually after 4+ years, you start to see more and more compromises. Games start to struggle to hold 30fps, 60fps games become more rare. Take the OG PS4 and XOne, they struggled a lot, and often pretty badly during the last 3 years especially. We often forget it, because of the Pro and OneX.

This happens to every new console. But now we have a console that even struggles at the very launch because it's a low specced machine.

As much as I like the approach here with the SeriesS, it's design and price, the enthusiast in me is concerned.

I didn't mess around with it too much, but in the demo I didn't notice much difference between RT on and RT off. I will probably end up just turning it off in the full game.

Yea, it doesn't look like they spent the RT budget very well.. It really seems non-existent. I'll get a better look on Friday.
I was thinking the same, as the lighting doesn't really seem to be there most of the time. But at least my framerate with everything maxed out, drops to high 80's at the very minimum. This is at 3440x1440 res. Trying to score a super ultrawide soon though, so the number will only drop :(

This alone validates my decision to come over here. DF does great work and it is so nice to see a DF thread without maligning them, conspiracy theories or shilling accusations.
I fully agree, but I do want to say that while we make sure our rules are followed, and threads don't devolve into chaos and misery, all opinions are welcome at the end of the day.

Nobody wants mods deciding what opinion is right and wrong, as that's a power that inevitably gets abused.

For instance, if that stuff cropped up here in a big way, I'd probably split it off into a second thread (Is Digital Foundry biased, or doing good work?), so it wouldn't disrupt this one.

Looks solid. I think not having a VR mode this time around is a miss for Sony, as it really gave PSVR legs.

I've got this pre ordered on PC. Should be able to do native 4k, Ray tracing on hopefully.

RE Engine looking to be pretty versatile. What was the one they used before, MT something? Capcom seems to be a pretty technically competent developer.

I feel like RE8 VR, when the new one comes out, is almost an inevitability, if they can do another amazing port. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see them give the game's sales a shot in the arm down the road with something like this.

So excited to start this, got some buds coming over and we are going to drink (Wasn't sure what but red wine seems appropriate actually...) and pass the controller around and shite our pants over this, every one of them except me basically doesn't play games so it should be highly entertaining for me haha. I also look forward to forcing them to look at every minor detail in the environment for 2 mins, they'll know patience like never before. That is until they take control and shite the pants, then they'll do everything they can to stay in those downtime areas I'm sure.

Tbh, I dont like the RT implement at all, so I'll definitely be playing with it off to get "locked" 60fps, they added it too late in the development imo, the game looks wrong with AO on the objects for me. If they had RT GI/Shadows that was a full replacement for that I'd be more happy with it. Or if the reflections were much better than they are but thats a pipe dream with japanese dev (ie dont care about latest tech like the west does) + 60fps target.

Did anyone notice DF fucked up on the comparison of the XSS RT On vs Off near the end? They switched the footage for the RT On and Off by mistake. The right side is lower fps than the left when it should be the other way round.

I wish they would take extra care to avoid doing that when these videos are watched by so many non-techy people, who might actually develop the ability to see this stuff themselves and understand what they are seeing so they can troubleshoot things on their own ("teach a fisherman to put a fish in his pants and the whole village will be happy", etc) or even know what 30 vs 60fps looks like. That just confuses people.

I would definitely be up for that, ready to poo pants in VR.

Performance close to identical, with a small single digit differences in frames at times. Up to 9-10% differential at most, which is basically 5-6 frames, but it looked more like 1-2 on average when it even existed. These machines are seemingly closer than any other competing platforms ever. The game looks oddly cross-gen and next-gen at the same time too.

Game is interesting looking, but it goes back to my idea that companies should be making new things. I know they tied it into Resident Evil with the last game of 7, but how many times can Chris be involved in these plots? This should have just been a new horror series, especially with the switch to first person, which feels so unlike RE to me. This whole Umbrella thing is kinda ridiculous at this point.

If you want to leverage the RE name just say "from the makers of Resident Evil, comes a new horror experience ... Village People Massacre!" or whatever name you want to give it. I don't get the need to keep revisiting these franchises that have more than run their course (outside of the obvious desire for brand recognition and sales).
