Almost done with the game. Just have the final boss to tackle. I did all the side quests and got all relationships to Max level. I fully upgraded 3 weapons and visited every area I could find.
The only reason I haven't beaten the game is because I have been trying and failing the Simon fight for 2 days straight but I give up, fuck that guy. Only Maelle can seriously damage this dude & his cheap bullshit near the end of the fight makes him impossible to beat. My backup team cannot even scratch this guy, my Sciel and Lune are under leveled, under luminas, under everything and the fight forces you to use the backup team, like WTF. My dodge game which has been so good has failed me in this fight as well. If Stendhal is ever un-nerfed I'll be back. I bowed down my head in shame, I have failed.
Edit: Just finished the game! Absolute 10/10. This game revived my love for gaming, which has been dwindling some. What a beautiful story of grief, love, and pain. The soundtrack is sublime, I have at any moment Lumiere & Alicia playing in my head even though I speak zero French. Fun gameplay, great graphics. Sandfall you have a new fan that will be looking forward to whatever you do next.
I used to think Maelle one shotting everyone was cheese. Until I got to Simon. Seriously, that guy can fuck off in the worst way. I haven't even taken on the final boss yet and I can already tell this guy is the toughest. One shots galore, multiple turns, and completely erasing members from my team. No, this guy can fuck right off. I've done all the optional bosses as far as I know and this guy is on another level.
Yep! I wish you luck in beating him, I couldn't do it.
I tried to cheese him by putting my backup team first and keeping my A team of Maelle, Verso & Monoco on the bench. My thought was that by doing that, he wouldn't use the auto kill/erase move on his 2nd phase at 30% health because I was already playing with my backup team, since he had long killed my "primary team". The joke was on me, he still used the move and I automatically gamed over. Having my "master plan" fail was one of the more deflating gaming moments of my life.
Cool. So my entire next weekend is going to be dedicated to smoking this guy. Sucks that your strat (which was solid) ended up behind bunk.
I've hit about 100 mil with Maelle in one shot. I'm not too worried about it when the time comes.

For those who come after...
So, just wondering, any woke stuff in it? I'm kind of assuming every Western game has it so I avoid all by default but this does look pretty.

So where do you put Expedition 33 among the classic RPGs of the 90s/2000s, and the more modern RPGs of the 2010s/2020s?
Having just returned after a long absence I must express my absolute love for this game. It has topped Witcher 3 for me as landmark favourite game of all time and it makes me want to play more JRPGs. Haven't played any for so long. Also worried that all other games will feel meh after finishing it though. GOTY without a doubt.
Tbh it's my favorite. The characters and writing were the best I've seen in a game so far for me.
I went back to Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar after this game and oh boi was that baffling.
I forgot that Avatar game came out at all...
Most did and barely anyone cared, the game flopped hard despite great visuals and very good reviews.
If black people offend you, there's like 3 NPCs in the begining that are black, but whatever.

Also, going back to merc Simon's ass after work.. I caved and used the Contorso glitch to farm a metric ton of lumina so just gonna take that and try to stack everyone to wreck shop. But I swear, I know I'm going to be feeling this...

That dude was so tough. Souls DLC boss like.
Except I can't I-roll through his BS. He's honestly got the worst mechanics ever. Him getting three turns where he can just attack, deplete, and delete you is nuts. And I'm not even getting to the phase 3 part which I don't think I need to mention.
I'm sure there are plenty of ways to build everyone to get around some of that nonsense but I'm going to have to plan it out. My approach last weekend didn't work so I'll be saving Sciel and Maelle as the backup and bring Machine Gun Verso™ in to see what he can do with his auto-Glock and some burn stacking.
Just parry his attacks.

So I'm reading a lot of comments here that say this game is the best RPG ever or at least game of the year.
I loved playing it, but I definitely had some criticisms of it.
The biggest one I have is the abstract environments make the game feel very very samey not just between environments, but even within environments. So many times I got lost and had to check the map constantly. This also made enemies feel similar in the late game, they were different but had a similar theme and look with some formula exceptions.
The other was the length, felt bloated, although the Act 3 content was optional, it resulted in what should have been a 60 hour game, taking like 110 hours.
Minor gripes, characters didn't feel too balanced, it's apparent that some characters are absolutely better than others.
Platforming and jumping was janky.
Could tell corners were cut with the world, going from the great NPCs in the begining to the puppet village that felt like it was trying to punch above its weight to create a village
The story twist in the end of Act 2 or the ending is a subjective negative, I found it refreshing, although the party members seemed to take the existential crisis a little too well considering the ramifications of what they learned.
Only brining these flaws up because games amazing, great turn based combat system, fun customization of characters, and great story twist and main characters. And graphics were great outside of being limited and a bit repetitive. And all this can be improved in the studios next game.
Point being, game has room for improvement, and can still learn from other games while maintaining what makes it great
