The combat in the game gets way too easy way too soon. Same issue as all AC games. I can easily take on any number of enemies at this point and I am just wrapping up the first zone. It is also too easy to run around anywhere and get away quickly. All you have to do is take 2 seconds to jump on to a roof. None of the enemies know how to climb.

I think this will follow the same as all the other games. The first 10 hours are 9/10. When you hit hour 20 it is 8/10. Then going beyond that the game drops down to a 7/10 and probably will drag on longer then I have time to finish it.

These games always have the base of a good game sitting right there. But the bloat and lack of challenge always drags them down. They could be something special with a few minor changes, but Ubisoft always does the same thing.

The problem is that the amount of content is one of their major selling points.
A selling point that the market seems to respond to.

I tend to find with these games like modern AC, Ghost of Tsushima, both Horizon games and even games like Jedi Survivor that the game is front loaded with nice looking scenery and areas and so on. The truth is that after a few hours though the game offers nothing new.

The problem is that in marketing materials "endless hours of content" sells games.

Yeah agree here, and that's why we're seeing those kinds of games not generating the numbers that they used to generate. Everyone did that multiple times already, for many hundreds of hours. I'm playing SW Outlaws right now and it's exactly the same.

That same structure and approach has been done for well over a decade on a regular basis. Changing the setting, adding some new features and making it look better did work for like the first ten years but at some point it's just boring.

When an Avatar, Star War AND Assassin's Creed game fail to sell enough copies, while being overall well made games, the devs need to find a new approach.

Rise of the Ronin could always get a Remaster that addresses a lot of the flaws with its graphics. It's definitely a game that focuses more on its gameplay and mechanics then graphics, at times arguably too much.

It sold well enough I could see it getting a remaster, and or a sequel though the issues with PC release might put a damper on that.

Nioh 3 with Ronins open world design with Nioh 1/2 level design for dungeons/temples/castles could be great.

Ronin will need a full on remake or a sequel because Shadows is a generation apart IMO. Shadows reminds me of that Witcher 3 gif before they gimped the visuals. Now it's finally a reality

I mean @HE1NZ is not wrong. Both games have one big ass maps with different zones with each having the same missions you need to clear like a checklist. With Ronin it's killing x number enemies in a zone.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the time I played with Ronin and I will continue playing after I finish Shadows but it's not some transformative experience over lowly Shadows or anything.

I know I said this in my last post…but they really need to work on the power curves and AI in the next game. You go from feeling super weak to feeling unstoppable with no consequences if 10 people spot you within a few hours. I unlocked Yasuke and it's even more obvious with him. Jamming the attack button mows through crowds of idiot AI guys that just stand there. If they do hit him he loses like 3% of his life.

The combat and stealthing around has zero tension when there are no consequences to getting spotted or being surrounded by 10 guys.

For me, these games all became meaningless after a while. They're just throwing STUFF and CONTENT at you. Which is fun for some time, I put in a lot of hours into Odyssey, had a cool ship, great horse, fun. Until the point where I realized that it's meaningless busy work. Still had a good time overall, but didn't come close to finish the story, explored a lot though. I think Elden Ring did that better, making exploring important with items that can radically change or improve your build, it felt more rewarding because it mattered.

Ah but how were the mountains in Rise of the Ronin?

I think Ronin is set in a far more interesting historical period.

To be fair to Shadows it's also set in a very interesting point in Japan's history, the end of the so called warring period before the Edo period began. Tons of stuff was going on then.

The issue is Shadows completely squanders it.

I finished the game and got the true ending about 65 hours in! Overall, I had a good time, but I had my fill of the side content, and I had way too many games to play, so I stopped and finished the main storyline. Maybe I will return later and finish the rest of the game

I had a chuckle when seeing that play time, because it made me remember my time with Odyssey where I put in like 80h or even more and was still at the beginning of the main story because I just explored and did side missions all the time. Then dropped the game because I had my fill. I had a good time, these games can really suck you in with all that CONTENT.

Yup, 60 hours in and I was still in Act 2. lol I still have a bunch of companion quests, Assassinations and a few castles to do. The knowledge skill ranks quest I ignored after unlocking rank 6 because you don't get any new skills rank 7 or beyond. I think this is why I think new games don't sell so well, there is just way too much stuff for the average joe to play through before moving on to the next game.

I'm currently playing Star Wars Outlaws and also barely did any story missions, but there was this bad ass outfit to unlock when maxing the trust of one of the factions in the game, so I immediately went for that. They definitely know how to hook you.

A Nintendo Switch 2 version of Assassin's Creed Shadows has appeared on the PEGI website

Now that'll be an interesting one for that engine. This and Outlaws are visually very advanced games that run great on various hardware configurations. But scaling down so much will be something new, curious about the results.

Huh that's weird. Apparently you can't delete the game unless you have an active Ubisoft Plus subscription after you installed it using Ubi Plus?

A bit of overblown drama through, he can just delete the files in the folder.

At this point, I hope we all can officially bury the "it's a commercial success" narrative for this game.

- launched without any competition
- over 3.000 people were involved making it
- ~350 million to develop and advertise
- huge marketing campaign with paid influencers, ads, merchandise, bundles
- 3m "players" and no update since then
- currently the 161 most played game on Steam lol
- very steep decline after a few weeks
- Clair Obscur Expedition 33 made by 33 devs surpassed the concurrent player count of AC Shadows. While even being on GamePass, which is quite the achievement.

It's actually astonishing what a commercial failure it is when looking at the huge investment vs the return.

The next AC game needs to be radically different, it's impossible for them to keep burning hundreds of millions. I really hope that they keep their amazing tech and that someone forces them to focus. Cut all the fat, scale the projects properly, be efficient. Make Assassin's Creed great again!

In general, this game vs Clair Obscur is a great showcase of scaling. Development projects with around 100 devs are already crazy complex and difficult to pull off. These projects with thousands of people working on it are a nightmare and extremely inefficient, above a certain team size, there's a steep decline in actual results but you have a large increase in complexity and issues.

This should be a wake up call for the industry. And Clair Obscur is made by ex Ubisoft devs, which is kinda funny.

10 years and 3000 people. The definition of bloat. 150 should've been able to make that game; it's not like Assassin's Creed games are some kind of ultra complex simulation or something. The industry is going to have to flush out the turds that have taken up roost in it, a lot like what Twitter had to do when it became X. Not just in development but the entire community. Did you hear that Alyssa Mercante finally burned all her bridges and she's now a waitress? She'll make a shitty waitress too, but at least she isn't in the video game sphere anymore. On the other hand, you have The Professor, who just got hired on at EA after being involved with concord and reportedly is a giant piece of shit that makes everyone call her Professor and likes to go to HR and shit up the office. Oh yeah, and she looks like a troon and is down to clown. Until parasites like that get culled from game development, they are going to be forced to require unrealistic sales figures to survive.

But at least in Shadows, they had a token black guy come out of the whole thing. So at least they can pat the, selves on the back for appearing virtuous or something lol.
