I raise you Cromartie High:
Thunderbolt Fantasy is incredible honestly.I finished season 1 of Thunderbolt Fantasy. It's not technically anime, but I only know about it because it gets talked about in anime circles. I had a lot of fun with it. Thumbs up

I just finished season 2 and am checking out one of the movies now. Thunderbolt Fantasy feels so fresh and different. It's this beautiful fusion of Chinese/Japanese entertainment along with great finger puppetry and cool special effects. It's honestly written better than I expected too with some pretty great dialog.Thunderbolt Fantasy is incredible honestly.

I think it was one of those lightning in a bottle moments. Evangelion was unlike any anime that was airing at the time. For people who grew up watching giant robot anime like me, Eva gave us a sobering and realistic take on the trope. It was also created by Studio Gainax, who by that time had gained a lot of acclaim for both Japanese and Western fans abroad for their work (Daicon 3 and 4, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise, Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Otaku no Video).I've never understood the Eva crowd that props it up as the best anime ever made. It's one of the worst anime series I have ever watched and she is absolutely insufferable.
You've never seen Urusei Yatsura? Despite it being her first big success, I still think it's Rumiko Takahashi's best work. I mean, I liked Ranma 1/2, but it's never matched UY in terms of laughs and just general all out insanity. And it went on to influence a whole slew of manga and anime in it's wake, such as the next series you mentioned.I'm not familiar with Lum but I don't think I'd mind a violent jealous girlfriend character despite the obvious problems that would present in real life.
I must admit I never really got into Tenchi Muyo, but you can definitely see a lot of Urusei Yatsura's influence upon it. Ryoko, like Lum, has never hid the fact that she's into Tenchi and wants to jump his bones, and like Lum she has a crazy jealous streak, but unlike Lum it's not Tenchi who's a target of her wrath, but his other suitors. Most notably Ayeka, with whom she has a love/hate relationship.A character like that can actually be kind of fun. Case in point, Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo

At least a character like that is not hiding that she's into you and doesn't treat you like shit. What pisses me off are the girls who just verbally and physically abuse the male characters and the guys just take it because apparently women are goddesses walking among men and we must do whatever it takes to garner their favor and apologize whenever we incur their wrath![]()

I do agree though, I find Eva to be overrated at best. I've seen much better anime than it seen it's heyday.

Ryoko's the main reason I got into Tenchi honestly, although some of the other characters are fun too. Everything from her powers to her design seemed cool to me. Plus, her being so comfortable with sexuality as well as the sweetness of her affection for Tenchi (despite the fact that it can bring out the worst in her) really won me over
One thing that was fun about the original OAV series is that it had a lot more sexual humor in it than other Tenchi series that came later (like Tenchi Universe), and much of it revolved around Ryoko.
She's one of my favorite anime girls. She's uncouth, violent, and troublesome. Yet still absolutely lovable and a total badass when she needs to be.
It also helps that Tenchi Masaki is also a pretty decent guy despite the being the main protagonist. I know I'm not much of an expert since I've only watched a few episodes of the original series, but Tenchi hardly did anything that warranted violent retribution from the women in his orbit. In fact, it was that kind and decent disposition that made him attractive to the girls in the first place. That's what separates Ryoko from tsunderes. Even in the Ryo-Ohki verse, she's never tsun-tsun towards Tenchi. During their first encounter she messes with him (because space pirate demon monster), but she literally fell in love with him watching him grow up and would never have hurt him. Aggressive, uncouth, and violent but openly and unashamedly affectionate characters like her are not really tsunderes. Tsunderes have to mask their love with anger.
