Thread: ANIME |OT| 'D-Pad City Shinjuku'
Official Thread
SBR is amazing and I am keeping up with Jojolands (pretty fun so far), but I haven't had a chance to delve too far into Jojolion (the fanbase is kind of mixed on it - it has a lot of "Araki forgot" shit in it where Araki's ADHD kicked in and scrubbed set up plot points in it).

Heard amazing things about SBR but I had read some things about Jojolion that made it seem like it would make Diamond Is Unbreakable seem like a mere appetizer. It sounded very interesting and creative, maybe even the most complex. I think Jojolion also might have won a couple or few awards too. It made me want to catch up. I need to start Stone Ocean but am not sure whether the anime or the manga would be more fun?

I'm so glad Friday is here. I find it's hard to watch anime during the week. Getting baked late on a Friday or Saturday night and watching Anime on the 65" OLED once the wife is in bed is the route for me. Reminds me of staying up late at night as a kid, watching the Sci Fi channel. Good times.

Gonna try to finish Doomed Megalopolis this weekend and then go into Blue Seed season 1. I watched a bunch of episodes probably 2 years back and its a really cool show.

I started reading Jojo manga in the last few arcs of Jojolion, so I actually picked it up there. The ending is. . .not that great.

It does some things SC, DiU, and VA did that are questionable, but worse. It has the abruptness of the DiU ending but without nearly enough build-up. A deus ex machina perfect Stand-counter ability appearing out of nowhere without being a clearly-demonstrated before also kind of sucks. The bubbles are actually quantum strings lol what does that have to do with them stealing things?

In VA GER is a perfect counter to King Crimson, but it makes sense narratively because we just had an arc where the Stand Arrow evolved Silver Chariot to have the perfect ability to do what Polnareff wanted. The Stand Arrow basically just manifests the user's will if it finds them worthy. And King Crimson could have taken advantage of that too, so we had stakes. Wonder of U is already there, already absurdly powerful, and Josuke just happens to have always had the perfect counter with no set up or hints beyond Bean Guy being vague. At least Dio said Star Platinum was the same kind of Stand as The World (The World having one ability, time stop), and Stands were mostly not as developed as in later parts anyway.

@infinitys_7th it's impressive that there are arcs to it. Usually each part of the JJBA saga is just one or two arcs right? How many does Jojolion have? I plan to read it from the start though. From the synopsis I read, that one sounds interesting. And maybe it's just me, but Hirohiko Araki has never been great at concluding his work. In fact, the only ending that was alright in my book is Stardust Crusaders. Beginning and middle portions of JoJo is where it's at. Kind of unusual for me now that I think about it, I'm always a huge advocate of having an unforgettable ending in video games but with JJBA I always have given it a pass there

Honestly I did not find much enjoyment in anything after Diamond is Unbreakable. Golden Wind is just bad, and maybe like a third of Stone Ocean is decent. I didn't even bother with Steal Ball, bc the ending of of Stone Ocean was so dogshit, but everything I've heard about it is not great.

People also get mad when I mention this, but the series artstyle change never went over well for me either.

Started up Record of Lodoss War last night. I've heard good things.

I give Lodoss a pass just off the amazing artstyle, and a bit of nostalgia.

I've heard people say Rune Soldier Louie took place in the same world but never got that impression watching it.

Bought a VIZ subscription to read One Piece and it's only $3 per month but I started reading JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean and the first two chapters are fun. Off to a good start, but I have no idea where this particular story will go. My first guess is that Jotaro gave his daughter a very powerful and useful Stand suited specifically for her. Maybe something he created or found during his research. Basically her get out of jail free card and ticket to freedom

Not sure what will happen once she breaks out of prison though. That can't be the entire story since there are 158 chapters in total here. Many more than I would have guessed. My guess would have been 90-110 territory. Reading JJBA is so much more satisfying than watching it sometimes, but I like both a ton either way

The Lodoss OAV from the 90s felt a bit underwhelming. The designs and the artstyle are great, but the animation was a bit janky at times and inconsistent. Also, it deviated a bit from the Lodoss novels it was based on. I wish it had kept fidelity with the source material since the original stories are actually pretty awesome.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind a remake of Record of Lodoss War with current day animation and give it the adaptation it properly deserves.

There was a second series. I only saw the 90s OAV. Is the second one worth a watch?

Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. It's a much more loyal adaptation of the novels than the OAV and follows the story to it's conclusion. However, it doesn't have the same animation quality as that of the OAV, but damn the opening by Maaya Sakamoto is FANTASTIC.

I must have seen at least one episode of the second series and forgot because that intro theme music feels very familiar. I think I will add that to my list of anime to watch since I already saw the original series anyway. Speaking of cool intros, this is arguably better than the iconic American version

And in 2011 the X-Men would get their own official anime series co-produced by Madhouse. I've not seen it, but people I know who are fans of the comic say it's the best animated version of the X-Men ever.

Not Anime but inspired by Anime and filmed in Japan w/ some Japanese skaters.. Doesn't deserve its own thread so I'm posting it here.

It's an edit from a german rollerblader, Eugen Enin. Really entertaining with some fun references to anime and videogames. If you watch the whole thing, the bail section near the end has such a funny ending. Eugen's brother is the one who films and edits the pieces together, really talented.

Makes me wonder how much money manga/anime earn overseas. I mean, it's a well known fact right now that manga has completely DOMINATED comic sales in North America with local publishers like Marvel and DC reduced to almost nothing (Demon Slayer alone out sold the entirety of all releases from US comic publishers).

Anime I'm not so sure about. Home video sales aren't much anymore in the West since streaming came about, but in Japan it's still a thing since that's how most anime earn their keep. But anime content is still very popular on services like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Another old favorite of mine:

Tenchi's a dork, but you don't watch the show for him. You watch it for the other characters who are hilarious

There were some other Tenchi shows, none as good as the original OAV, but I do like Tenchi Universe. It resolved the question of "which girl", unlike the original series. I was quite happy with who they chose as she was always my favorite and clearly the best girl.

I don't really know how well Tenchi holds up now, but I had a lot of fun times with the original show and Tenchi Universe. I think I saw all of the movies too

Also, gotta show some love for Beast King GoLion, which I had no idea was the original name of the show when I watched it as a kid

Probably none of my friends will take my recommendation and watch it so I'm gonna yap here instead:

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury

I must mention I'm a recovering Mech fan. Used to watch Grendizer when I was a toddler with my dad who's also a massive fan of the cartoon. Grendizer remains the coolest looking mech out there, no questions asked.

But that was when I was a child, haven't done much Mech shows/games etc since. I remember reading about this 2022 Gundam standalone show and it looked interesting. I started watching it last week and finished the first season last night, great stuff; Politics, Robot Fights, and fresh Highschool stuff that does lead somewhere and isn't purposeless. All the characters big and small are interesting and I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Might even go back and watch more Gundam if they're as good as this one. Will immediately start season 2 tonight.

I got burnt on seed, haven't watched a Gundam since, but if you're saying it's good, I'll maybe go watch a few episodes, see what I'm missing

I talked about Scott Pilgrim in the "What are you watching" thread. Wikipedia calls it an anime, so maybe this is the more appropriate thread. At one point I kind of got irritated with the show and stopped watching it, but I decided to give it another chance today and watched the remaining episodes

The season finale makes the whole show worth it. It totally slaps.

If you've seen the movie, this is basically an alternate take on the story. It definitely subverts some of your expectations, but hits on a lot of the same themes and the story ends in a way that I think is way better than the movie. It's all the same actors voicing the characters too, and Edgar Wright was involved in this too. So it feels like both a follow up to the movie while also being a reboot of the story. It has some Anamanaguchi tunes like the video game too.
