Thread: Alien: Romulus | Teaser Trailer
>spend 40 million dollars shooting the movie in Hungary
>spend another 40 million on post-production

"Dude check out our practical effects, look it has so much practical stuff, pls come see our practical aliens and shit we have an animatronic facehugger"

Disingenuous marketing for depressed Gen Xers. It has a fuckton of CGI, including
a deepfake resurrection.

It's actually quite an interesting case study on the CGI front. They made as much as possible with practical effects and models, and scanned them all to make the CGI models for consistency.

As for the spoiler, I'm not surprised given the rumoured plot and and Easter Eggs in the trailers. I take it it has indeed taken some inspiration from Out Of The Shadows?
Saw a trailer for this before Deadpool.... this looks SO FUCKING AWEFUL! Was super cringe the whole time. Its like the new Star Wars stuff.... it makes you wonder if these people have even taken the time to watch the classic films that built the IP.

They're 100% massive fans of the original movies, and have put a fuckton of effort into ensuring consistency with them, using as much as possible for reference materials, including getting original props and moulds to get designs right and make new things that look like a stepping stone between the aesthetics of Alien evolving into the design ques of Aliens, even going so far as to include the save points from Alien Isolation as background details (and as subtle hints for when shit is about to hit the fan).

One thing you can't accuse them of is not being actual fans who know the universe inside out.

Now whether that translates into a good, well written film or not, that's the real question.

Well then they are just shit at making films. The trailer was garbage. I laughed out loud in the theater during it.

I mean I am not entirely writing it off, cuz maybe it will be like Prometheus, where despite poor casting, acting and dialogue, the core premise is interesting. But nothing in the trailer suggests as much.

Fede Alverez made the 2013 Evil Dead and Don't Breath, both of which were solid if not amazing movies. A similar 7/10 would still be a vast step up from every Alien movie since the first 2, which is the expectations I'm going in with.

I honestly don't get the problems with the cast, they seem to have gone for what looks like a pretty typical group of working and lower middle class class kids, with aspirations to get out of their industrial home town, and a hair brained scheme to make a big score to finance that escape. There doesn't seem to be any woke casting either, with the only slightly college feminist looking chick being the one that dies first, your standard Ripley knockoff the studio likely mandated, and the black Android being the only potential obvious problems.

Again, not saying it won't be shite, but I'm not seeing the issues in the trailer you are. What specifically is causing the issues? Because again, I was absolutely ready to write this movie off as modern low effort bollocks, and I've been slowly won over to cautiously optimistic it won't be total shite, so I'm absolutely open to taking harsh criticisms on board here.

Ok, then it makes sense why we have differing opinions on this one. I HATED the 2013 Evil Dead. Love ED1, 2 and AoD, but thought 2013 sucked balls. I downloaded it for free, watched ~40min then turned it off and deleted from my server. Even at no cost, it wasn't worth MY time. But as always, different strokes for different folks.

Oh, in comparison to the real Evil Dead movies it's an abomination and I've only watched it once, because there is no reason to rewatch it instead of them, but it was still competently made and I would argue decent as a horror movie in its own right, just wholly inferior as an Evil Dead title.

The actual direction, cinematography and effects were good, which is all that matters really. If this were a remake of Alien rather than a sequel, I'd be livid, but there are far worse creators that could be put in charge of a new original Alien movie. Ridley Scott again for one.

I have my fingers crossed that this movie will be good. I didn't dislike the last few movies and they had actually reached a point where I wanted to see the outcome of their story.

I think the last movie I saw in the cinema was Alien Covenant! So I suppose I had better go to see this.

I googled that novel and yes, the plot is similar.

This movie is garbage IMO. It will make Prometheus and Covenant haters seethe until the end of time... And it will also make Prometheus and Covenant enjoyers seethe forever. And Alien Resurrection fans will hate it.
Just go watch highlights of the franchise on YouTube, it's free. Romulus has things from every movie, including like 50 recycled lines.

To be fair though I enjoyed the first 15 minutes. The very beginning is supremely retarded but it looks and sounds amazing.

Well I think Resurrection is better. The aliens actually do something in that movie. Here they just pose in poorly lit scenes, as if you're meant to go WHOA DUDE I RECOGNIZE THAT, IT'S THE XENOMORPH. They're fucking useless lmao

Every set piece in Resurrection is better. Every character is more interesting. Even the story is better. Romulus is an inoffensive thrill ride that was done better in Don't Breathe.

I think Jaws in the long run actually contributed in certain ways to the collapse of modern society and entertainment. It set the standard that you could put the most horrific nightmarish shit on a movie screen to a global audience as long as it was given a rating, its sequel was a big prototype for the slasher genre and both served as blueprints for entire genres of moves that desensitized mass audiences to insane borderline realistic uncanny valley levels of ultra violence. Far, far more reach and influence then a more straight outright supernatural horror movie like The Exorcist though that also played a part.

Yeah, I do think Jaws should be re-rated with an R rating. It having a out dated PG rating is insanity.

do these exist?

Resurrection is a movie of it's time, it really does fit the time period it released in. I don't mind the movie. Definitely not my favourite, a movie of moments but not terrible at all.

Thinking back to it, I think my favourite moments were the underwater section and the people stuck on the walls who had been face hugged.

Winona Ryder was kinda lame.

When people were hating on Prometheus I still really admired the movie for the quality production and smaller lore details. I will find the shining light in any Alien movie I guess!

Not dissing your opinion but if you think resurrection is better than Romulus that says something about this movie.

Movie Sounds like utter crap

Reviews seem to be all over the shop.

I've heard everything from it being the worst bar the AvP movies, to the best after the first 2.

For fans in particular it seems to be a bit of a marmite movie. Some say it's a good horror and the Alien aspect and Easter eggs heighten the experience, others that it wasn't even scary at all and the Alien nods drag it down even further.

Hell, I've even seen as many people rag on the special effects as love them, that it overly relied on CGI, or that it beautifully kept to physical effects and miniatures unless it was absolutely necessary.

So it seems to really be a movie you need to see and judge for yourself.

I liked the film. I wouldn't place it anywhere near the original or Aliens, but it's definitely better than Alien 3 by a large margin. There were a few things I found strange, namely the gestation times were way too fast and I still don't understand why a certain character does something she does which causes the true ending. There were a lot of homages to the original film and I thought the dude playing the Synthetic was excellent. Some of the space shots were spectacular too.

Oliver Harper just dropped his review. He's a big Alien guy. Talks about the production a bit as well.

He was pretty positive on it overall. Gave it a 4/5 and said it was one of the better entries in the franchise, albeit after Alien & Aliens.

I still don't get a lot of the hate for Alien 3. It wasn't nearly as good as the first two movies buy not nearly as bad as everything else that followed.

It killed off one of the best heroes in the history of blockbusters and the little girl she saved in 2 and the marine co badass, making Aliens ultimately pointless since the survivers all die in 3. Alien 3 should never have been greenlit with such a absolutely pointless storyline and the series has never recovered from that absolutely terrible decision. Alien 3 was a precedent and an early example of a franchise killer like Terminator 3/Dark Fate, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, Game of Thrones Season 4 onwards.

I just got back home from seeing the movie and I thought it was alright. Not my favorite in the franchise but it was entertaining enough.

The monster at the end was freaky af XD

Movies like this are basically just branded merchandise.

You've seen Alien and Aliens right?
Why not buy the t-shirt?
Why not buy the mug?
Why not buy a 300 buck statue of the Alien?

I'm sure I even saw an Alien cookbook out there at one point.

Now, why not buy a ticket to watch the generic movie with "Alien" branding?

Nobody is coming out with new shit because it's easier and more lucrative to just sell branded merchandise.

These films are an exercise in marketing the "Alien" brand rather than an attempt to make a good movie.

After hearing how much buzz this was getting I expected it to be a lot better than it was. It was just so... safe. I don't count rehashing prior movies as something that is great. I'd give it a very weak 3 out of 5. Felt like an alien movies for teens, very clearly focus tested to hell.

Ok I saw it. First movie in the cinema since Alien Covenant for me 😂

Overall I liked it. But it wasn't a straight path to that decision. Things that held me back a bit were..

The cast. It felt a bit like The Goonies does Alien. Especially early on. I did get used to the cast later into the movie to be fair.

Would have been nice to have a little more suspense. Especially regarding the Xenomorphs. It was almost like the movie forgot they existed at points whilst the characters were dealing with different issues. Even a few jump scares once the Aliens had been presented would have added something.

For me I would plonk this movie right into the middle of the Alien movie collection.

I saw Longlegs today also. Which I preferred! But it was a good day for Horror movies.

The one person in my social group that saw it was not impressed. They said it wasn't the worst Alien, but no where near the first two. I asked was it better or worse than 3 and Resurrection... he said "does it matter?" So, def Steaming or Oceanic Adventure quality it appears.
