Thread: Nintendo Switch 2 sold 3.5 million in 4 days
Sales
This is something I learned a couple days ago and it still blows my mind. Those small pieces of shit cost $95 now. That is crazy.

I've always assumed risks with console hardware, at least for the last 25 years. "What if your 360 red rings?" "What if your PS3 gets YLOD?" "What if your PS4 gets YLOD or BLOD?"

One can talk themselves out of buying anything if they're so inclined. I bought all those systems and enjoyed them, even ones with hardware issues. And FWIW, I own 4 Switches and have had stick drift on not a single one.

Stick Drift is a pretty big thing and Nintendo was trying to deny warranty claims for it. Its good yours were fine, but the effected units were high. Im in a team of 8 at work and one of my female co workers had it on hers. She had a carry on trying to get Nintendo to do the right thing.

I know it's a thing, so was the RROD AND YLOD. I'm saying I don't care. The enjoyment from having those systems outweighed the risk and even cost of those issues. I replaced my 360 twice. Bought another right before they were phased out just so I'd always have one to play because it's one of the greatest systems of all time. Same with the Switch. If I have to replace a joycon now and then l don't care.

Conversely, my PS5 was power surged by lightning during a storm last week and I'm in no hurry to fix it because it's been a huge letdown. Reliable and yet completely fucking unnecessary. To me, it's all about value,; I'm having trouble getting value out of the PS5, so any extra costs on a system I'm already not happy with seem like good money on top of bad.

Nintendo play it safe and have stuck to the same formula and franchises for decades, theres nothing there doing thats particularly bold or innovative IMO.

Hilarious take from someone who fanboys for a company that decided last gen every single game needed to be an open world AAA cinematic experience.

What im talking about is everything outside of the game. Do you really want to get into an ecosystem where they can brick your console if you use it in a way they dont like?

MS and Sony have done this since 360/PS3. Interesting how you made a thread about this with 66 replies of "wahhhh what do you mean Nintendo can brick my console if I pirate choose to mod it for optimum performance" while this thread about Sony's new social credit has 9 replies and you didn't make a peep about it. Not to mention they started recording chats back in 2020 to ban you if you said things they didn't like online. You seem to be selectively upset about things. I wonder why.

Are you happy Nintendo dictating fan tournament prices? Do you not mind Nintendo issuing baseless law suits regardless of legal position, just because they know companies and individuals can't fight back. What about an online infrastructure thats a decade behind other rival platforms?

All shit, agreed.

What about legacy games been locked behind subscriptions?

Kinda like ps plus?

What about if your hardware breaks down i.e Joycon drift?

Anecdotal but I have been through 3 DS4 controllers because of drift and 0 joycons. That's not saying my joy cons don't have drift, they have very minor drift that shows up occasionally, but it's not bad enough for me to want to replace them. My DS4 controllers the drift made games unplayable. Super noticeable when playing MLB The Show since I used dual stick for hitting and the crosshair would move spastically all over the place. Also my first PS4 was broken brand new out of box. Bought the UC4 limited edition, it wouldn't boot up. Apparently a bunch of those units were fucked from what I saw online. I have never had a Nintendo system fail on me, I have had multiple Xbox/PS consoles bite the dust. And trust me, they don't offer to replace the unit for free if it's out of warranty.

Do you want to pay a company that will do everything it can to get out of its legal obligations? Do you want to play third party games that are worse than on any other platform (if you can play them at all). Do you like to be charged more than any other game publisher for your games? (that in no way justifs the extra cost).

There are trade offs to playing games on Nintendo consoles. You could have bought re4 on 360/PS3 that have shiny graphics. I'd rather play it on the Wii because the motion controls were fantastic and completely changed the game. Now the choice is if you want to play something on the go and have it as a portable option. The answer most of the time is yes, I would rather have something portable than being glued to my TV like a friendless loser whacking off over frame rate and other graphical buzzwords to distract you. And don't worry, your precious Sony will be charging $80 for games soon. They had no business raising the price to $70, but you don't seem to care about that. Only when Nintendo did it, then "THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!" Sony has also been steadily raising the price of PS+ for years with absolutely no justification but I don't see you getting upset about it. In fact, you seem to be ignoring these things entirely. Fanboying is a crazy thing

What for? The latest Mario Kart? A handful of exclusives? Every game purchase is going to fund these wankers and those practices.

Somebody is upset that Nintendo outsold the TransStation 5 lmaoooo. I'd say go play some games but they keep canceling their 1st party offerings.

I had two joycons replaced with drift for free years after I bought them. It sucks that it happened, but a 1 week free turn around is fair.

I wouldn't say fan boy. I criticise Sony as well, but yeah they are less on my shit list than Nintendo... if that makes me a fan boy lol.

Its not about units failing its about repairing them in warranty.

Im literally shaking with rage right now the Nintendo Switch 2 outsold the Sony Playstation 5. Not sure how you can remain so calm.

TransStation 5! Hahaha.

I'll definitely be using that one.

Wouldn't be a Nintendo thread without discourse! Repeating the same thing! 😂

The numbers just prove normal consumers just like the Switch and wanted the successor. Normal consumers just don't care about modding their consoles, so they really don't care about the potential bricking. Because they don't mod or even know how to mod their consoles. Same with emulation. It doesn't affect them.

It's also further proof that the negative discourse about Switch 2 is just the loud minority. Even some of them went out and buy Switch 2! 😂

I'm just over here enjoying my Switch 2 and laughing! 🤣 ❤️

Yeah for all I care, people can dislike or hate this new system all they want. If that's truly their opinion, then more power to them.

But I'm over here just enjoying this banger of a console.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware in the U.S. in the four days following its release, according to a statement obtained by IGN from Nintendo.

Additionally, Nintendo Switch 2 sales in all regions were approximately twice those of the Nintendo Switch 1 across both consoles' first four days on the market.

This news comes on the heels of Nintendo's announcement yesterday that the Nintendo Switch 2 was also the fastest-selling Nintendo hardware globally, reaching over 3.5 million units sold in its first four days. For comparison, the Nintendo Switch 1 sold 2.74 million units globally in just less than a month on sale. Nintendo is projecting 15 million sales globally of the Nintendo Switch 2 for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.

High sales are being attributed to high available stock at launch, something that isn't always guaranteed at a console launch. Nintendo of American head Doug Bowser previously assured that Nintendo would have enough Switch 2 units to meet demand in the U.S.

Love them or hate them, Nintendo schooling fools on how to launch hardware.

It is kinda crazy. I remember when a console launched with some first party games. Nintendo is like, we have 1.

Dreamcast had 18 (God, what a great launch. Rip to one of my faves).

PS 3 had 16. Xbox 360 had 18. PS 5 had 4.

But Switch 2 doesn't win. XBox series x launched with 0 first party exclusives.

Where are you getting these numbers from? The PS3 launched with 9 games, only one being 1st party exclusive. 360 had 17 games, only two being 1st party (Kameo and Perfect Dark). Also worth noting these launch titles were mostly sports games or other cross gen multiplatform titles. PS5 launched with Demon Souls (a PS3 remake), Sackboy (cross gen), Spiderman remastered and Spider Man Miles Morales (cross gen expansion pack).

Dont fight against the people wanting to make your gaming experience better. That's how corporations get away with so much.

I'm pretty sure there's at least one folk tale out there, about some brave guy who wanted to go fight and kill some monster that kept taking a toll from the village, that the whole village kept telling him not to try and do, and he goes and tries anyway, wounds the monster, and the monster gets angry, levels the village, and moves on.

With the moral probably being, that if you're up against an insurmountable power with nothing but ideals to back you up, you're probably better off just enjoying what you have, lest you have even that taken away from you - because the insurmountable power always has that option, and merely chooses to stay its hand until you give it a cause.

Right but if the whole village says "Hang on a second this monsters behaviour is wrong", they could do something about it. If everyone was like the village in the story we would have no rights, not own anything and be completely at the mercy of megacorporations.

I'll never understand how users can look at a businesses shitty behaviour and be like "its the users pointing it out that's the problem." It really shows how easy it is for users to punch down for a few second dopamine hit, rather than punch up, at the people taking away their rights. Crazy world.

Right, but average people complaining to average people does nothing. It's just noise. The monster is strong enough to wipe out the village, so no amount of villagers talking amongst themselves is going to accomplish anything. Villagers can go ask the king for help, but then the villagers may find out that knights being stationed at the village incurs a higher toll than the monster ever did. It's a crappy world out there, and any organization with enough power to do something about something will always look out for itself first.

It's not that the users pointing it out are the problem, it's that the users pointing it out are inflicting more harm, from the perspective of the 'consumers', than the company's shitty behavior. Yours is a consumerist world. People are willing to spend money to gain something good, even if it's "too much" money. Because from the perspective of someone like me looking into that mess, even what you used to pay is "too much" money. Like who the hell pays $60 for a game? I never spent more than 500 rubles - 5 to 10 USD depending on timeframe - on a game, because that's what a "game" is worth to me. So you people are way more ready to spend money on luxury entertainment as it is. From the perspective of the average consumer, the money isn't the problem as long as it results in something good being obtained. Their "well being", their personal calm, emotional state, whatever it is they use to prop up with this entertainment, is worth that money to them.

It's pointless to point out "shitty practices" to people who only care about being entertained. Dare I remind you one of the earliest forms of collective entertainment was feeding barely armed slaves to wild animals.

You treated the users pointing out DEI practices in Dragon Age Veilguard and Naughty Dog games as the problem.

All you need is one, really but it needs to be a killer app. Based on Mario Kart's sales over the years, this game will go on to sell 70+ million copies. MK8 sold nearly 70 million on S1. Xbox launched with Halo, a game so big that even people who loathed Microsoft bought.

Switch 2 is reminding the business about a lot of its lost launch practices…. Maybe you don't need 20 pieces of shovelware, you just need one killer game. Maybe making buyers scrounge for hardware for a year isn't the W companies thought it was, maybe you'll sell more hardware if you make it available.

LOL I see we've reached the point where we are blaming the consumer. Good times!

It's been 8 long years! With each new releases last few years we started to see the Switch struggle. Switch 2 is the upgrade we wanted. But some of us were more surprised it surpassed our expectations of the power!

LOL I see we've reached the point where we are blaming the consumer. Good times!

It's just embarrassing at this point.

People actually believing that they are out there trying to make the consumer experience better for all of us.
Or actually believing that other consumers are just stupid because they willing pay a set price for an item that they want.

Every single business in the world is looking to make a profit.
Every single discount, freebie or investment in customer service is designed to get more money from the customer.

People are basically arguing "Sales Strategy X doesn't work on me" while they are absolutely being worked over by Sales Strategy Y.

People will lament the Dreamcast and the loss of Sega as a big player but the fact of the matter is that Dreamcast just didn't find it's audience in the same way that other consoles did.

You can have 100 games at launch and sell them for $10 each but if you don't have enough people willing to make a purchase then it's done.

3.5 million units in 4 days suggests that Nintendo is offering something that people want to buy.

It'll be interesting to see how the numbers go over the next few years.

That seems too pro mega corporation to me. Here's an example where the boot is on the other foot. I bought a 5090, I think its too expensive but was caught in the middle with having sold my 4090. I absolutely value and respect the users fighting back against Nvidia and its business practices (especially price and media control). I cant imagine a world where I should critique the people giving this feedback, rather than at Nvida themselves, even though ultimately I value their product. Im not blaming consumers who enjoy and purchase Nintendo games, other than the ones fighting to erode their rights.

Is it though? It's their most successful franchise and Mario Kart 8D is Nintendo's best selling game of all time. It's sold 67 million according to the last update.

I think Nintendo has proven that no matter the HW, THEY will bring a bunch of great games. And we already know that DK, Metroid and a "holiday" game are coming this year. So it really makes early adoption a no brainer… if you like Nintendo games.
