Hello everyone, I'm Kevin McDonald (Tachyon Blue) and I'll be doing an AMA that Mirabilis thread is generously creating for me here. I've interviewed 70+ people involved with GamerGate in a variety of capacities for an upcoming multi-volume series of books. The first volume is already finished and now I'm running a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to pay artists, pay for a web domain, get a better home office setup, and other expenses. As part of the campaign to promote the Kickstarter and also engage with the public, I'm hosting an Ask Me Anything topic here, on D-Pad.life! Thank you to the staff and community for allowing me to host this, I very much look forward to reading and answering your questions! The Kickstarter will go live on December 9th!

I'm more than happy to answer any questions and hear out feedback that you may have. I will be responding to the Ask Me Anything posts live for at least two hours on Thursday, January 2nd from 7PM-9PM EST. However, by all means feel free to submit your questions ahead of time in this thread, as I will be going through both live questions and the pre-submitted questions.

If you don't want me to read your username aloud on stream as I type my reply to your post, please say so at the start of your question.

TL;DR

I've interviewed 70+ people involved with GamerGate. These interviews are being transcribed into book format. Each of the main volumes will include several interviews with GamerGate people, most of which are available on my YouTube channel, though some are book exclusives. At the end of each volume, there is a "Tachyon's Take" where I give my perspective on a specific topic relating to the GamerGate conversation. There will also be a data volume, comprised of data that I've gathered on the persepctives of GamerGate supporters, opponents and neutral observers. Below is more information, mostly from the Kickstarter page, in case you have additional questions. A full list of people I've interviewed will be available on the Kickstarter page after it launches on December 9th.

The Story
In September 2023 I set forth on an ambitious adventure to investigate and document the stories of the people involved with GamerGate on both sides. In the year since that journey began, I've interviewed 70+ people on both sides for this multi-media project. Many of these interviews are publicly available on my YouTube channel, though others are exclusive to the book series.

So what was GamerGate? I went in without a definition and would try to see what I would find approaching things as neutrally as possible. What I found over the course of these 70+ interviews is a consistent message from the people involved; it was about ethics in games journalism. Nearly everyone involved who supported GamerGate is in agreement that GamerGate was about ethics. You would think that with near unanimous agreement, the GamerGate topic would be relatively simple to understand, though you would be mistaken, as some of the people wanted to add other topics to the conversation other than just ethics in games journalism.

Aside from ethics in games journalism, the two subsequent leading definitions of what GamerGate was about, are artistic freedom and opposition to censorship. Having input data from twelve of the pro-GamerGate interviews so far, these two contingents are both sitting at 41.7%, though with scores more interviews to go, it remains to be seen if these contingents will ultimately exceed 50% support or if other minority factions will emerge in the data. I am also collecting data from the interviews with neutral and anti-GamerGate people separately, though I haven't input enough data from those interviews yet to start drawing conclusions.

Why should we care? GamerGate is a topic that has been misrepresented to a degree that is almost unbelievable. The misinformation that one could find out there about this topic is so vast in scope, that it is difficult to overstate. Almost every claim imaginable has been thrown around a movement about video games. From mundane claims that supporters of the movement endorsed harassment against critics to outlandish claims that GamerGate elected Donald Trump to the American presidency, to frankly just bizarre fever dreams about the movement colonizing Mars. No, I'm not joking.

The topic of GamerGate looms large in the eyes of many a hack writer. While it may be humorous and generate ad revenue to write article after article about how GamerGate was responsible for the world's ills, it is irresponsible and it is misinformation. With so much misinformation out there on this topic, I think it is important that the true story of what happened be told, from the eyes of the people involved on both sides. Its important that historians, educators, journalists, academics, and anyone else interested in learning about the topic, have a reliable resource that they can turn to for understanding what happened.

About the Author
I'm Kevin McDonald, also known by my online handle, Tachyon Blue. I was involved with GamerGate from 2014-2018 under the alias "Netscape" and I organized the GamerGate meetups in Saint Louis, Missouri. I also organized panels at Arch Anime and Natsucon, two conventions in Saint Louis to discuss the topic with the public. In 2019, I wrote my first book, GamerGate: First Battle of the Culture War, to try and document what happened. In 2020, I largely left the internet and focused on real life.

In July 2023, I returned to the internet as a livestreamer focused primarily on political and gaming topics. I was mostly homebound due to some vehicle troubles at the time and was inspired by the livestreamer Destiny to try my hand at combining the worlds of politics and gaming on stream. I've made wide-ranging content since, everything from hosting panels, interviewing people on the ground in Ukraine, debating political issues, discussing films like Alien: Romulus and playing games on stream. I very much had and still have a "taking all comers" type of approach and have engaged with a wide array of people from various backgrounds and political values.

In September 2023, after much consideration, I decided to revisit the topic of GamerGate nearly 10 years later with fresh eyes for my first livestreamed project. I knew my own experiences and I knew the pro-GamerGate perspective, but I wanted to try and investigate what happened, see things from different angles, document the stories of the people involved, and create a thoroughly researched work for anyone interested in learning about the topic.

In "real life" I'm dedicated to getting this project finished. However, when I'm not working on this, I enjoy politics, gaming, history, science fiction and fantasy, fan conventions, festivals, holidays, camping, and tabletop RPGs. I also enjoy spending times with my friends and family.

Tachyon's Takes
In addition to the interviews, each standard volume of the book will also feature a final chapter written by Tachyon Blue that explores a specific area related to the GamerGate conversation. I am still in the process of determining the full list of topics that will be explored in each Tachyon's Take, but some areas I am looking at include:

  • Games Journalism (Volume 1)
  • Artistic Freedom (TBD)
  • Cultural Conversations (TBD)
  • Harassment (TBD)
  • SPJ Airplay (TBD)
  • The GamerGate Wikipedia Article (TBD)
  • The Media Coverage of GamerGate (TBD)
  • The Politics of GamerGate (TBD)
  • And others!

The Data Volume
In addition to the interviews and Tachyon's Takes, I am also using two different data collection methods for this project. The first method is that I have mostly used three separate standard question lists for the pro-GamerGate, anti-GamerGate and neutral interviewees. The voice interviews go well beyond the question lists and the question lists have changed over time. However, as I am asking most people the same questions, I am gathering data from the interviews based on my good faith interpretation of how they answered many of the questions on their respective list. I ran the original question lists by Mist Sonata, who is anti-GamerGate and Yuune, who is neutral on GamerGate, to help make sure they were neutral.

Here are the three standard question lists as of November 12, 2024:

Pro-GamerGate:
Anti-GamerGate:
Neutral:

The second data gathering method I am doing is that I have sent out optional surveys to the people I've interviewed, with three surveys in total, one for pro-GamerGate people, one for anti-GamerGate people and one for neutral people. These three surveys are mostly identical, so the reader can compare how each group answered each question.

Interviewees had between March 22 until the morning of May 1, 2024 to complete the survey. Of the people I've interviewed, 27 pro-GamerGate interviewees took the optional survey, 4 anti-GamerGate interviewees took the optional survey and 6 neutral interviewees took the optional survey. I offered extensions to 1 pro-GamerGate, 1 anti-GamerGate and 1 neutral person due to them having major life events occurring during the survey period.

Here is a public demonstration of the questions asked in the surveys: https://forms.gle/BJ5MxPY69Y9TXq6AA

The data collected from these two different data gathering methods will be in the Data Volume, which is included in hardcover with the Vivian James Bundle and The Complete Set, Hardcover+Digital. The Data Volume in digital only format is included with the Gilda Mars Bundle, Sealion Bundle, Lillian Bundle and The Complete Set, Digital. The Data Volume will be the final volume.

Unironically, have you reached out to Sargon? Out of the GG Mt Rushmore he is the only one who would probably seriously talk to you and is not dying, ragepigging on tortas, a fed, or a C-list actor trying to get publicity. He's kept mostly the same friend group from those days too so you have have more Pro-GG contacts from him too.

How it started:
History-of-videogames-and-Women.jpg

Then after videos telling us why Games are Sexist, Games are Racist and you have to point it all out Anita Sarkeesian (propped up by her handler Jonathan McIntosh) and Zoe Quinn go to the UN to claim women face online harassment:
Anita-Sarkeesian-and-Zoe-Quinn-UN-e1443714120772.webp

When all that was happening was this:
Femenism-7a.jpg

Now Cultural Marxists are embedded in HR and Video Game companies, as well as Hollywood and we get GDC lectures like this:
Politics-in-Video-games-1727439334245296.jpg

All being propped up as paid shills aping as game reviewers and "journalists" working in collusion to push the California political mindset on an industry to destroy a hobby with self-inserts, antagonistic characters/storylines towards the consumer and self-inserts for the mentally ill. Subversion of beauty in art due to low talent DEI hires instead of meritocratic choices because fat women are mad and men will never be women so they are double plus mad.

With all due respect I'm completely opposed to this project. A younger generation cares about fools on youtube, I do not. Their opinions, rants, posts have no bearing on my adult life.

Another term for Video Game Journalist is 'a nerd who plays video games and talks too much'

Hey everyone! It's true, indeed I am doing the AMA! I look forward to responding to everyone's questions live on January 2nd, both reading and engaging with the great discussion here so far. Thank you to Mirabilis for creating the thread!

Inspector Clouseau here is finally going to get to the bottom of some shit no one cares about.

Before joining, he asked if he could have a thread, and I agreed. I didn't guarantee a great reception to it here, given that it's a subject that has been discussed before. Still, there is no need to be bore about it, simply because it's not to your tastes.

Yeah I don't know what gamer gate was and I still don't, nor do I really care enough to spend an afternoon reading about it.

That being said, good on you @Tachyon Blue for taking on a project that interests you and putting a lot of hard work/time into it. Don't let the negative little shits here discourage you, I'm sure there are people out there who are interested in this topic and will appreciate the work you have done.

Gaymergate on the otherhand..... 😩

Well it's obvious now that the legacy gaming media worked lockstep together to push Marxist ideologies into the gaming sphere by creating a phantom movement named gamergate. It allowed them to push an agenda in the gaming landscape that brought forward multiple ultra progressive ideologies into the developer industry. If any developer didn't concede to this the legacy media would tag team and assault developers until they cow towed.

Now we have a push back emerging, the ideology has failed and the absolute failure of game sales is evidence of that.

This little circle of progressives is nothing to the video game market of the planet. It's over.

Even as a few companies are claiming to be backing off DEI, they never got rid of the high level people pushing it. Then you have Jaguar going balls deep into it.

Gamergate started when Internet trolls latched onto a noboby whore who "networked" by getting weiners stuck inside her. "Ethics in game journalism". The autism from that spiraled into people uncovering the first wave of SJWism/DEIism into popular culture because the weiner-networker's network was the first generation of SJWs/DEIers in corporations. That could have led to some serious discussion, but unfortunately GG was being led by embarrassing grifters and morons who variously have decomposed over the years.

Gamergate is like if a retarded Trojan who loitered around the famous gate had seen a soldier inside the Trojan Horse through a crack in it (lets get metaphorical and say near the crotch) and started sperging out. It did nothing to stop the infiltration. It is a cautionary tale about the importance of gatekeeping. Not only did gatekeeping not happen to keep out the first wave (who then brought it the second wave after MeToo purges) but the people who had the platforms (free at the time, wild west YouTube) let every retard join in and make it a cluster fuck. I've dunked on him before, but Sargon is probably the least damaging person involved. Just look at Ethan Ralph. He was a leader in Gamergate FFS.

People with loud voices shout at other people with loud voices and neither side see they are both the same, just opposites of each other. Both quoting the most extreme of each side ad nauseam, getting themselves worked up.

The rest of us inhabit a sensible middle ground, have our own opinions, express them, but largely just play games and vote with our wallets *shrugs*.

The "sensible middle ground" haha that's a good one.

I keenly remember the "sensible middle" making the same Both Sides argument during GamerGate, hand waving the concerns of one particular side, claiming the ideological intrusion was a paranoid exaggeration, not willing to acknowledge the wider problem in journalism, "just some bad apples".

You fence-sitters were wrong then and you're still wrong now.

Both-Sides is actually Bi-Sexual behavior. /PSA

The middle ground was Kotaku Inaction, er, In Action.

You do actually have to talk about and criticize the opposition with the same intensity they do you imo. KIA was like 2007 John McCain:

>be moderate
>know stuff is wrong but don't want to hurt feelings
>give tepid takes ran through three PR filters
>get called a Nazi/mysoggyknees/etc. anyway
>sit there/stay on the subplebbit with a shit eating grin
>repeat

Now, did we need some of the absolute fools getting involved to say genuinely dumb stuff? No, but PR filtering just reduces the memetic potential of your message. You need a little edge, well crafted, and genuine interest. Jim/Mister Metokur was probably the closest to that, but he just wanted to shitpost.

During "gamer gate" it somehow passed me by, I never knew about it. I played the same games I always did, visited the same sites and nothing changed for me.

Like I say voice your opinion, vote with your wallet and move on with life. The problem with focusing on the most extreme voices is it in turn changes you. Look at how you are now compared to how you were. You've become pretty bitter tbh. I miss the poster who was passionate about games and friendly and wasn't on this crusade, dial up to 11, 24/7.

Oh brother. I post about games all the time and I love the hobby. I just hate the political intrusion and I also hate hearing from people like you that I'm not acting the way I "should" in this hobby.

I've seen this stuff happening for awhile. By your own admission, it didn't even register for you. That's fine, but then maybe defer to the people who have been paying attention to it?

For someone who doesn't like this topic of conversation, you sure do spend a lot of time talking down and dismissing those of us with the experience and knowledge on the topic and who want to discuss it. What's the goal here man? You're constantly trying to belittle and shut down conversation on the woke problem in video games.

Calling me bitter is a Facebook wine mom move. It only shows how little you actually know me and how superficial your view of me is.

Being on the losing side makes naturally makes people bitter unfortunately. Gamergate lost the cultural battle. We've had some minor victories, but for the most part the SJW networks set up then in the gaming industry are now in every major corporation and global governments. Even if rightwingers win politically, the post-SJWs can control the culture from the private sector.

I do think Gamergate is important, but again as a cautionary tale of "How NOT to Run a Counter-Culture Movement".

It's hard to avoid tbh. I can only go with my recently dealings with you. I mean look how much flack I've got and I largely agree with most of the points you make. I just think it's disproportionately important to you (and a few others) and it's bleeding into every thread and topic and not just in a "here's my opinion" kind of way bit a continuous crusade way that spoils enjoyment for others.

My view in the larger context is if I want to find out about something I wouldnt just go to the most extreme people on either side or read articles that are framed to enrage (clickbait). Why can't we just acknowledge flaws but evaluate the product as a whole?

You complained that "my side" was crowding the conversation in game threads with our concerns about woke content in the game, even asking that we stifle that sort of talk and do it in separate threads.

Yet now that we have separate threads about woke stuff, you can't help but chime in with dismissals of the topic itself. If anti-woke talk doesn't "belong" in game threads by your own reckoning, then the woke denialism and faux concern for my "bitterness" belongs in a different thread too.

Don't pretend it was expressing your "concerns" as that is disingenuous to us both. It's constant and unrelenting shitposting to any game you and your pals deem woke (where you are largely aligned what games people are allowed to enjoy here).

There's probably 70% of threads I don't go into anymore because it's changed from a group of friends having a laugh about games to political activism and tabloid style piling on I don't find enjoyable (and sometimes embarrassing).

Anyways I won't detract from the rest of the thread. We have massively different opinions, we can deal and move on.

On the other hand, the SJWs pushed too hard with their power and it resulted in outrage from normal folks. Thus it galvanized those in power on the opposite side to push back and win some major victories. First was Elon Musk buying Twitter and purging it of all the woke activists, and finally Donald Trump winning by a landslide to become President.

Look at what's happened on the culture side of things as the result of this. Newsmedia is in ruins at how they completely misread the election results and are struggling in the face of non traditional media moguls like Joe Rogan. Hollywood and it's pedo celebs are now flailing like helpless chickens at the realization of how inconsequential their endorsement of politicians really is.

We've yet to see how damaging Trump's reelection has been to game development, but I think a reckoning is at hand once a second Videogame Crash comes about as a result of these woketard gamedevs doubling down.

The whole thing is interesting from the perspective of it being the first mainstream culture war, between the media and the public. I agree it didn't go well, but then at the same time it was always a rigged game. From my perspective, I always felt that the big moment that people perhaps miss is what led up to Gamergate. Stuff like the 'Entitled Gamer' narrative over fans' legitimate complaints about Mass Effect 3 spring to mind wherein almost the entirety of the gaming press heaped universal praise on ME3 as if it was the second coming, and then when fans finally got their hands on the game it was very much a case of 'what is this shit? '. Instead of any self-reflection by the press over them perhaps having not given the game a proper shake, they opted to turn on their audience. Something we see a lot happening these days with the whole 'Toxic Fans' thing, but at the time this was unprecedented in media. Hell, I remember EA sensing that Bioware had fucked up and asked them to work on an extended cut to try and mitigate the damage, and certain Game Journos at the time were slamming them for giving into the 'mob' as they saw it. There was this complete disconnect going on between Game Journos and the idea that the 'Fans' are in reality 'Customers'. It spectacularly backfired, and even to this day whenever I see this 'attack the fans' approach I'm always instantly reminded of Arrested Development: -
