I can see them doing sharpening over blu-ray transfer. It's not looking good. It's like that oily Predator release but on a sharper scale. Denoised it too, but I think the noise layer applied on Aliens bluray was faked anyway. Imo Aliens bluray maxed out the potential of this movie, it was filmed on inexpensive stock.

.Photochemical grain has been greatly reduced, though not eliminated entirely, and it should be noted that this isn't the usual Digital Noise Reduction with which people have long been familiar (a dreaded and blunt instrument). Unlike an image scrubbed with DNR, this process hasn't removed all of the fine image detail. Not only does that detail remain, it too has been "enhanced" algorithmically. The image has then been graded for high dynamic range, with both Dolby Vision and HDR10 available.
The result is remarkable clarity and detail, but it is a bit jarring. Applied to Titanic (reviewed here), this unique remastering process feels completely appropriate. Applied to Aliens, which has always been a film with a grittier look, it takes more getting used to. The film looks almost modern now as opposed to vintage late 80s, which appears to be Cameron's intent."

The Abyss disc seems to be denoised and sharpened in a similar way. But it's the best version available so have to go with it.

I should catalogue all my movies and physical media. I'm still rocking my HD DVDs, think I'm only missing a handful of releases, I'll never let go of my Blade Runner 5-disc collector's edition. Have many BDs and UHDs too, but have spent many a night transferring everything to a localised Plex server, which, whilst not the best way to enjoy everything, keeps the missus happy by reducing my clutter, ease of access too.

That's partially why HD-DVD failed against Blu Ray. PS3 had Blu Ray included.

That external 360 player was so great back in the day, mine has died now sadly, but it's how I managed to rip some of my collection. I don't even know what I'd do now that I no longer have access to a disc drive. Guess I could sail the high seas for the rest of my collection but the 500+ movies and 200+ TV series I aleady have access to seems perfectly fine until I get a bigger drive. Looking at perhaps getting NAS to take care of having an "always-on" solution.

As a crt dork, i know the difference. Im also retarded
DVDs were an interlacing nightmare when watching on PC. PAL DVDs would play slightly faster than normal because third world countries couldn't author DVDs properly. I remember getting Terminator 2 on BD and thinking it feels slower than I remember.
Thankfully this shit is over.

It's a bit below DVD. it's 480 I think? - not digital, it's analog so it has a lot of moving parts. It's pretty sick
