Thread: STARFIELD |OT| No Man's Skyrim
Official Thread

In a DF Direct Starfield special, Rich, John and Oliver share their impressions of the game, answer a ton of supporter questions and offer up some impressions on the PC version. And we also attempt to tackle the biggest question of them all: is a 60fps performance mode possible on Xbox Series X? To answer that, we use the actual Xbox Series X CPU via the AMD 4800S Desktop Kit, paired with a GPU that's a close match for the PS5's. From there, we unlocked frame-rate and examine the characteristics of Starfield and what options are open to the developer.

The Gaf review thread is such a shitshow. Deep Enigma of War and his cronies are having a grand time with the lower reviews and are using every single nitpick to bash the game. Curiously, I haven't seen a single one of them post in the OT. Why bother giving so much attention to the game if they haven't played it. The people in the OT seems like they're having a blast, heck even the shower elf is coming around to the game.

Some people here might not have liked the game and they have respectfully given their reasons why but I haven't seen anyone actively trolling. D-PAD>Gaf

So far, I'm really enjoying the game. I am kind of waiting for the shoe to drop and waiting for recycled content (given the 1000 planets thing) but about 10 hours in and it is a next gen Skyrim/Fallout game for sure. I think this game will change drastically over its life time... there's just so much potential. Factions so far seem varied and interesting. It's quite refreshing that everyone recognises me as the guy the universe was created around and everyone can trust lol. I stole some rice and now i've somehow become a double agent against the Crimson Fleet in the hopes to have my slate wiped clean lol.

As for the bad like I say the scope is too big and it will have its downsides show up, I'd of preferred one solar system TBH. Loading seems very strange as to when and where its employed. No DLSS, frame gen, HDR or Texture quality settings is pretty bad.. lets face it if a Sony first party game came out with this, a few here would tear it apart. Also I've had two major bugs, but the rest are pretty funny/entertaining.

At the moment I'd give it a solid 4/5 stars with the ability to go in either direction, depending on the amount of unique content there is (it's impossible to gage this early in). Definitely a return to form so well done Bethesda. Will it be my game of the year? That is a super tough one... Returnal and RE4 are also excellent and I haven't even started Baldur's Gate 3 yet.

So, a tip for those on PC with an LG OLED and who already have Reshade and who want to use HDR without it looking super washed out. There's an easy way to make your image, imo, MUCH better, albeit not perfect since it isn't native, without needing to download any presets off of the nexus or LUT mods or anything. Just turn on the fake HDR option in Reshade and then turn on windows Auto HDR at around 50% brightness in windows sdr/hdr brightness settings. I also played around with my TV's tone mapping setting and HGiG looked the best to me but YMMV with all of these settings depending on your model. I own a C2. This greatly remedies the raised blacks and also, for whatever reason, alleviates the blurriness from the heavy screen space filters the artists used without removing them so you still get the artistic intent for the color space for each area. It looks much clearer to me without being too saturated and the sky is finally deep dark at night. Before, I'd find there were areas where the "artistic intent filters" would break my immersion with how blurry and washed out everything could get. But now my immersion has stayed in tact. For me, this will do till they have an official HDR solution.

Speaking of nighttime, everything really pops at night now. I just arrived at Cydonia for the first time yesterday. It was night time in game when I got there. There was a storm with heavy winds blasting sand and embers all over the place. Couldn't see very far where there weren't lights, it actually looked like a storm at night. This looked incredible in HDR. I found my way to the entrance by using a walkway on scaffolding which gave an amazing view of the depths of the facility, which gave me major Alien 3 vibes. Just before I activated the door to the entrance I noticed two people talking by a building a few yards from there, but from this far away I couldn't see or hear them too well.

So I wandered over and as I did so I realized I was instinctively keeping near the side of the facility because of the storm... Talk about immersion. When I got close enough, I heard the two guys talking. The dock crew were informing the pilot, who had a super cool looking navy helmet with red light coming from the inside, that his ship was infested with heat leeches and would need to be treated. The pilot said something about not realizing it was that bad because he just had maintenance or something but grudgingly agreed to the price and walked away towards the entrance. I was going to follow him in but I decided to follow the crew worker over to what must have been the guys ship. There, other workers were waiting. To my shock they actually took out their cutters and started firing beams at the ship! I got a bit closer and noticed they were actually aiming at mollusk looking pods that were attached to the outside of the ship. Wow...

Then I remembered posting this yesterday before I had started playing that day...

Would be great if you could actually get a heatworm infestation and you need to clean them off manually or set a crew member on it.

At the time of writing that I had done the first mission the day before where you go to the facility to get the crimson fleet off your back so you can get to constellation. If you read everything inside there you learn what that facility was being used for and in doing so all about heatleeches. Which is where I got the idea. But I didn't think they'd actually do it!

Now, I don't know if it's an actual mechanic for the player yet, but man, stuff like that would be so cool, and easy, for modders to implement.

Now I'm wondering how those leaches got on his ship. Was he targeted or was it naturally occurring?

Is vanguard good for being an explorer? I haven't figured out what faction I want to join. So far the space detective has been the most alluring but I think I would really enjoy being an explorer.

I was completely exploring a moon today I was overloaded and running back to my ship. Every time my stamina ran out I would look up at the stars while walking. During these moments I really appreciated the soundtrack and realized this is the game I always wished no man's sky was. No Man's sky is great but this is truly my rpg in space that I've always wanted.
The constellation quests are for exploring. You get a lot of them at a kiosk on New Atlantis -- I think. I got like 6 of them now.

Vanguard is the space police.

I'm so glad I found out there were one sane forum left in the world so I didn't have to rely on Gaf.

Gaf - right oriented, SonyGaf.
Era - left oriented with mental ill disorders, Xboxera(?)
Dpad - we are just plain mental ill gamers at least.

Constellation seem like a bunch of cardboard cut out wankers. I'm not looking forwards to getting to know any of them. The idea of romancing any of the women makes my dick shrivel.
If you are talking about the characters that can join you then I can sortof understand you. Sarah is really cool and very alive. I bring her with me all the time.

Speaking of the NPCs in the game.. I have to say that the voice-acting and numerous different voices is top notch. Faces may appear stiff with expressions but they have so many actors in this game. I've yet to find the same voice.

You know what site is worse with over 100 pages of trolling? ICON. Go there and watch them having a party and calling anyone that likes the game blind as a bat, an xbox shill that needs to be banned, etc.. They are even making a meme contest thread to make fun of the game even more. It's sad.

You have to be a very mentally disturbed, like in alot if you can be pro Sony and get banned from Gaf.

The sanest of the mentally ill, indeed.

I played a bit more last night and Sarah grew on me a bit. The voice acting is fine and does what it can with the dialogue, but the dialogue is tonally pretty square.

Captain's Log Stardate 9/8 - If anyone has gotten Secret Output quest, do it immediately. There is a wonderful legendary item waiting for you at the end of the quest!

Ok finished main quest and story. I thought it was pretty good! The last mission was pretty hard for me because of the choices I had made. I liked the ending too.
SPOILERS:
I decided to become starborn and touch the unity. So do I now just go and find new artificers and powers? Shame I couldn't keep the two sweet weapons I got from the hunter and emissary though!

Level 16 and I'm still attempting to grab skills that are basic I think.

Honestly given there is no level cap I'm all about rounding out the base skills to build upon versus rampaging up the table. I'm level 14 on my current build after I restarted and my points distribution is as follows: -

I went bounty hunter and started with the Starred.

Weightlifting 3. Didn't bother to start leveling this up until after the 1st mission with Sarah and my pockets were full of gear tbh.

Persuasion 2: I think probably the 2nd skill I purchased, as there are quite a few persuasion options in New Atlantis to hit the rank target that can be done even before heading to Constellation. I might even have done the first persuasion against the Crimson Fleet Captain on Kreet IIRC (I want to see if not fighting him results in him re-appearing sometime).

Ballistics 2: Already have enough kills now to rank up to 3rd, but weighing up where to go next in terms of activity ..still an essential skill.

Research 2: Science Tree definitely intend to give some more loving to, but mainly ranked up this so I could do some early upgrades and rank up. Will likely get surveying and Astrodynamics on the go at some point as well.

* Boost pack training 1: Not sure whether I'll spend more points in this tbh, but useful to have early on.

* Piloting 1: Used the Vanguard flight simulator to help rank this up, although I'm waiting on a better ship before I commit more points to it as let's be honest, the Frontier sucks in a dogfight.

Security 3: First skill I purchased after the opening section, and there are enough doors, etc. to open in Kreet that you can rank this up easily. Pretty much essential to get up to Rank 3 so you can tackle those Master locks.

* Targeting Control Systems 1: Again, something I plan to level up, but for when I have a way better ship.

Presently on Akila having done a few local missions as well as the bulk of The Empty Nest, though I'm reluctant to deliver the artifact back until I'm in a position to rescue Barratt so he can be a witness, and also recruit both Heller and Lin, which means getting a much bigger ship with extra crew spots, as well as building an outpost (which I haven't even thought about yet tbh).

Think I'm going to do the Spacer Mantis mission next as I have the skills for all the locks, plus Sam is tagging along and he's a lot less whiny about when you are overburdened versus Sarah from what I can tell, plus I gave him one of those brutal 40mm guns and a clip of ammo, which means he is just crushing everything. Thinking ballistics levelling up wouldn't be a bad option as plenty of kills to undertake.
